Love Life of Luke (Possible Spoilers)

First, it’s really hard to find a picture depicting a love triangle that isn’t a picture of Twilight.  I was lucky to stumble onto this one, which is more of a square. For those that don’t know it’s Spider-Man who has been involved with Gwen Stacy, Black Cat, and Mary Jane among others.  These are the big three though.  The Black Cat Vs Mary Jane is always a big thing.

Now, there is a theme that Luke Callindor is involved in that needs more than the previous post.  His love life has garnered some criticism, which caught me off guard because I’ve heard more about this than anything else in the books.  Poor Nyx gets no attention and I have no idea how most of book 3 was taken due to this.  For those that don’t know, here is the situation:

Luke Callindor and Kira Grasdon became an item at the end of Beginning of a Hero.  She comes from a culture where you are encouraged to date multiple partners as long as you don’t hide them from each other.  This way a person can try to bow out if they feel the others are perfect together.  Keep in mind that I said date, but sex is a major factor and it’s the one that people focus on.  So, people see the Bor’daruk culture as one of sleeping around.  It’s a culture that was nearly destroyed by rampant divorce, so marriage is seen as unbreakable.  You break it and you’re exiled from the land, which is why you make damn sure you’re with someone you truly love before taking the plunge.  Luke comes from a culture that is more like what we’re used to, so he’s unsure of it.  He fights it for a while and worries that Kira is indulging too much, which is something that nobody in the story really knows about.

You can tell what’s going to happen already.  Another woman will step in and create the triangle.  In the end, Luke will have to make a choice between the two women with a lot more weight than a high school girl.  It’s a choice that will hurt no matter what and he’s going to be plagued by this for most of the series.  The women are friendly (for now) and will be competing, but Kira’s culture makes it a little strange.  The other woman spends some time accepting that she won’t win and is along for the ride.  There is also the issue of Kira not being an adventurer, so her absence creates more confusion in the situation until the ‘big event’.  After all, if she was there then this situation wouldn’t be as much of a mess as it’s going to be.

The other woman is Sari, which people probably see coming.  A fun-loving gypsy is the perfect entrant into this love triangle.  More importantly, she is the other side of the coin that is Luke’s life path.

Originally, there was no Kira Grasdon.  It was always Sari and Luke, which did turn out to be a rather lame idea due its speed and ‘perfection’.  There needed to be an obstacle and then Kira evolved in the first book to fit this mold.  The problem appeared with Luke and Sari needing to be together and me not wanting to go the adultery route.  That would hurt all characters involved and destroy the relationships.  It’s amazing how many have called for Luke to be turned into a cheater or to become a man-whore.  At the same time condemning Kira for being a slut . . . yeah, I should point out that nobody really knows what she’s been up to.  Anyway, this is where Bor’daruk came from and the rest is history where I still have very little idea who will win.  For a while it was Kira and then Sari and then back to Kira and then Alyssa and then nobody and then Kira and then Sari and now I’ve got no idea.  Yet, I’ve recently seen how this plays into Luke’s themes.  If you read this far then here is the payoff:

Luke Callindor comes from a family of heroes cursed with a powerful wanderlust.  They go off to become heroes and travel when they hit their late teens.  Some Callindors settle down like Luke’s father while others continue adventuring until they die.  There’s also various middle choices in here.  As for Luke, he isn’t sure what will happen to him because he’s only just begun.  The two women that he’s genuinely in love with show the two paths he can take.  With Kira Grasdon, he gets stability and living a calm life without wandering around.  With Sari, he satisfies his wanderlust and never has to give up the nomadic lifestyle that he’s infatuated with.  Much of this depends on how all three characters mature, but this is a key theme of Luke’s development.  Will he choose the life of a retired hero or never give up the road?  The fact that he’s in love with Sari and Kira makes this a lot more painful because he doesn’t want to hurt either one.  You’ll see the torment and confusion in book 4.

See there is a reason behind this plot line and it isn’t a bizarre way to give Luke a threesome.  Not sure the boy would survive that any way.

Luke Callindor: Luckless, Courageous Hero

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Best that I start this blog post series with the first hero of Legends of Windemere.  First, I’d like to point out that I said first hero and not main hero.  This series is really an ensemble cast with the 6 champions rotating through the focus protagonist role.  Luke Callindor is the first hero we meet in the series, so he has more moments in the spotlight.  Yet, he will fall to the background for a few events.  This is where some interesting character themes come from.  It also causes confusion among readers when they see him being overshadowed by more powerful characters like Nyx.

Courage, Doubt, & Reputation

When we first meet Luke, he is trying to prove that he is worthy of his family’s heroic reputation.  Being raised as a famous name, he has a lot of courage, but he also possesses an underlying doubt.  Luke is always wondering if he’s being treated a certain way because of his deeds or his lineage.  This creates a confidence structure that is easily tampered with.  For the entire series, he will be trying to prove he’s a hero even after the reader and other characters believe it.  There will be moments of frustration and despair when things go wrong because he puts a lot on his shoulders.  In this way, I think Luke mimics me as an author because I still feel like I’m fighting to gain my footing.

Culture Clashing Romance

This is part of Luke’s love life because he comes from a culture similar to what many of us are used to.  Date one person to either marry or break up with is how we see the world.  He has trouble adapting to Kira Grasdon’s culture where you date multiple people until you marry and then stay with that person for life.  Oddly enough, this also shows that divorce is acceptable in Luke’s culture and one of the greatest shames in Kira’s.  It’s this plot point that causes the morality issue for some readers.  Yet, Luke has a lot of trouble with this and it puts him in a bad spot when he finds himself in love with two women.  Kira appeals to his idea that he will one day settle day while the other woman appeals to the wanderlust that might never leave.  In truth, Luke has the inevitable tragic romance storyline of this series. (More on this Thursday)

Power & Pulling His Weight

Luke isn’t the magically powerful character like Nyx or the physically powerful character like Timoran Wrath.  Sari has more tricks and a future hero has more brains.  So, Luke gets overshadowed if you’re comparing him to others.  This does bug him at times when he fears that he’s getting left behind.  Yet, his perceived low power is part of his character.  Luke doesn’t go hunting for power and has very little interest in it.  He has his swords and his courage, which carries him through.  He takes more beatings than the others at times, but that’s another part of his character.  This isn’t to say he’s even weak.  Villains underestimate Luke and target him a lot, which forces him to use his real strength: thinking on his feet.  He is the unpredictable hero that could feasibly surprise everyone and defeat a superior opponent.  It is a big part of his story as he finds himself getting left behind in terms of power, especially with the big finale of Curse of the Dark Wind.

Coping with Loss

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Something occurred to me when writing The Compass Key.  Luke has seen a lot of death and betrayal in his adventures.  He began with this romanticized vision of what being a hero would be like.  It got destroyed in Prodigy of Rainbow Tower with a friend’s demise, the betrayal of another, and being pushed to his limits.  If anything, Luke is the most innocent hero of the entire series.  Nyx has seen fellow apprentices die and has had no issue killing an enemy with her magic.  Sari has a darkened view of the world after the slaughter of her clan.  The future champions are seasoned warriors.  It’s only Luke who hasn’t really been tested prior to the series.  His emotional calluses are appearing before the readers’ eyes.  This stems from a realization that it is in the The Compass Key that he takes his first non-monster life.  He can rationalize orcs and chaos elves who are monstrous in appearance or reputation.  But the taking of a human life and his reaction to it was something to behold.  In brief, Luke fears that part of him might be dying and he’ll change for the worse.

Growing Up

I’ll fully admit that Luke has the most growing up to do in this book.  He’s a novice transforming into one of the greatest heroes of Windemere.  Not a pristine hero even though he might gain that reputation after his adventures.  He makes mistakes and tries to improve, which is part of his strength.  Luke will never get everything he wants and his immaturity leaves him open to greater levels of loss than the other characters.  This creates a major theme of finding the strength to continue with a damaged heart and soul.  People are going to see Luke having to remain standing after some horrible events.

So, that’s Luke Callindor and his themes.  What do people think?

Crazy Characters and Surprising Scenes

Two things have occurred today that I felt needed a post.  One is pride and the other is just odd:

I think I just wrote one of the most powerful scenes in Curse of the Dark Wind.  It’s a Fizzle scene, but two other characters appear in it that simply stole the show.  So much mystery, anguish, and rawness in them.

I’m seeing a looming main character might be entirely different than what I originally intended.  I always wondered how this one would come out because the player joined the game a little before it died.  The character was essential, so a personality and path hadn’t evolved very far.  So, I had no idea where I would go when this game-changer stepped into the story during Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue.  A few cameos to get a feel, but nothing standard until now.

This character has jumped from utter confident badass to wise advisor to timid apologist in the appearances since The Compass Key.  There’s more to it that I don’t want to spoil, but the physical appearance is set for the book I start writing in February.  Yet, I can’t pin this one down and it seems to work.  I know this character is broken.  I’m talking ‘dear god, how is *gender* remotely sane’, so I don’t know if this works.  Can a character be good if they jump from confident to timid at the drop of a hat?  Threatened this one can beat you with your own lungs, but raise your voice and they cower?  This is something to grow out of and locks in a personal subplot that I had yet to truly uncover, but I wonder if there’s a massive risk for starting like this.

Serial Killer Protagonists

Dexter

Dexter

Mohamed at Dawn of Thoughts mentioned something a while back that got me thinking. He brought up how serial killers are being shown as protagonists, which can glorify their actions in some ways.  Dexter is a big one where the ‘hero’ is a serial killer who kills other serial killers.  It brings up the question on what defines a protagonist and can one hold that role with a corrupted moral code.  Do characters like this cause some level of social corruption?

I really don’t have an answer to that because I think it depends on the reader and character.  Done correctly, these are very complex and tortured characters.  For example, Punisher and Wolverine are anti-heroes with a huge body count.  That’s only on the surface though.  A reader has to delve deep into a serial killer protagonist because that is where you will find the reason for the character.  Wolverine has a primal rage that he tries to keep in check.  Punisher is fighting grief over the death of his family and has considered suicide many times since his creation.  I don’t know much about Dexter, but I have seen a few episodes where he wonders about his future and purpose.  It isn’t remorse, which would undo the serial killer part, but a confusion over if they’re really a good guy or a bad guy.

There is a risk with such protagonists.  They depend on the reader’s ability to put their own morality aside, analyze a darker morality, and/or distance themselves from part of the character.  You have to accept that people will find such a ‘hero’ repugnant because of what they do while ignoring any torture that the character goes through.  People see a killer getting glorified and worry that those who see the surface only will try to imitate.  It’s a challenge for all fiction writers because an edgy character can be incredibly fun to create and work with.  As the author, we enjoy stepping out of our own shells and taking the good and the bad for a drive.  We return to our true self with ease and understand that it’s a character.  This isn’t always the case with readers.

If you wish to write a character like this then be brave, stand by your convictions, and do your research.  Be aware that the character can fall into the abyss before you’re ready, so have a plan of redemption or prepare to end them.  Such is the danger of a morally dark and volatile character.

What do people think of such dark protagonists?

Red Clay and Roses Review

Highly recommended book by Year Round Thanksgiving!

Pamela Beckford's avatarYear 'Round Thanksgiving Project

Snowed in? Looking for a good book to read? You should download Red Clay and Roses.

I loved this book. The word pictures were so well done that I felt like I not only knew the characters, but I have mental images of them. Historical fiction can be ho hum or it can be as if you are living it. The author did a great job of inviting the reader to live it with her. I thought the book started a bit slow…maybe not so much slow, but it seemed much of the very beginning was unnecessary. (Note: I believe this may have been changed when it was edited). Of course, once I finished the book, I saw it all tie together.

I highly recommend this book. It was an easy read…and engaging read. I can’t wait to read more by the author. I gave this book five out of…

‘But which came first, the experience or the form?’

‘Well, as they would have been very much in the landscape, presumably the experience, which was then only later confirmed by observation of the form.’

‘I am very much reminded of the Aboriginal Dreaming.’

‘It does seem to be a similar conception of being… Malaga Man he went walking… he walked this way… walking, walking… he got tired here… sat down and fell asleep… Rainbow Snake emerged from a Water-Hole whilst he slept… That snake tried to swallow him whole… Malaga Man woke up in time and caught hold of Rainbow Snake’s tail…It broke off in his hands… he dropped it then…left shards of rainbow everywhere.’

‘One wonders where they are getting it from.’

‘Then one realises that they’re reading it in the land.’

‘Mmmm… Is that the end?’

‘Hardly, it is…
