Goals of a Tired Man

Last week was rough with several family ‘events’ and a snowstorm.  I can’t say I got very far with my goals because I simply didn’t have the time.  When I did have the time, I found myself slipping into a depression from the stress and chaos.  This is fairly easy to do because I’m always tense.  A few days of delays, stress, and pressure can really knock me down the emotional ladder.  I’m still trying to drag myself up, but this week might be easier.

I’ve decided to take the first week of February off from book writing for two reasons.  One is that this week heads to the Super Bowl and I’m already seeing signs of late week cleaning chaos.  My family throws a party every year, which means certain people will be acting like the sky is falling on Saturday.  The other reason is my good friend Greg is supposed to hang out here for a few days the following week.  We’ll see what happens, but I won’t be as active on those days.  Then again, I got the WordPress app working on my iPhone, so I won’t be totally out of things.

I could easily finish the outlining goals this week since I’m in the minor character designs and then I have to make a sequence of events.  This puts me into the next future idea, which is a headache.  The Elysium Saga!  I’ve talked about this one once before and how the game was a scavenger hunt.  Wouldn’t translate too well to books, so I have to figure out what to do.  I don’t know if I should make another post to voice my thoughts and get opinions or stick with this one.  If anything, I’ll need to really sit down and think about the pieces of the story.  It’s one of the core series of Windemere with the same impact as Legends, Clyde, Darwin, and Sin.  Maybe I can bounce a few ideas off Greg once I get a few drinks in him . . . and me.

Anyway, here’s the plan for the week

  1. Finish outlining/planning War of the Tainted.
  2. Continue reading The Crimson League.  Might take a day or two to see if I can finish it off.  Halfway done right now.
  3. Promote other books and look into a few curious marketing ideas.
  4. Clean and prepare for Super Bowl.
  5. Start thinking of The Elysium Saga.  Make a plotline list and anything to help focus.  It might require junking the game notes.
  6. Improve my mood.  More challenging than one thinks.
  7. Find something else to do while the TV is taken over by the person who wants to watch the Grammys.
  8. Eat, drink, and be Merry . . . or Pippin.

Character Origins: Lord Highrider

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

With the looming debut of Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune in late February or early March, I’m going to introduce some of the new cast.  A big part of this story is the introduction of 2 new main heroes and the revelation that changes the entire history of another character.  One of the new heroes is Timoran Wrath who I’ve mentioned before and the other one is . . . to be revealed during Hype Week.  Though, you have already met this character in passing.

Today, I’m going to mention a supporting character who became one of my favorites by accident.  I never planned for him to return beyond a cameo after the events of Hero’s Gate in Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.  For those who read the book, you might remember Lord Highrider the half-orc knight.  The guy who led the attack on the orc bandits and wields a big hammer.  Well, he gets a lot of development and page time in the 4th book.  I can’t go into details just yet, but he’s gotten a promotion and is one of the top allies of our heroes while they try to fix Nyx’s mess.

In the game, he was a nameless knight who might not have even been in there.  I tossed a name on him when I started planning the series and he stuck around.  Lord Highrider (first name a secret of the 4th book) proved to be a wise and oddly witty character.  I think he plays off the heroes very well in the 4th book because he takes a ‘I am very curious, but probably should not know’ approach to their actions.  Yet, he has his own moments of cunning trickery when he manipulates one pivotal event.  A reason I find this intriguing is because he’s a half-orc.

Traditionally, anyone with orc blood in a fantasy setting is slow-witted and brutish.  All mixed breeds were created by orc bandits raping women of other races.  The existence of Lord Highrider throws that out the window because he came from a marriage between an orc man and a human woman.  He is also not an idiot.  Sure, he loves battle, but one could say that about Nyx.  It’s really his job to fight, so he takes enjoyment out of it.  The key part with him is that he’s living proof that orcs in Windemere are different than most other fantasy stories.

He also helps me develop the knight system of Serab and lock in some structure to the government of Hero’s Gate.  Both of these areas are very important to my series, so having established political figures helps give them depth.  Most importantly, Lord Highrider and Duke Solomon work to show that this isn’t a world where every political figure or knight is some power-hungry, conniving bastard that will betray the heroes.  Truthfully, I want to limit my use of the corrupt politician, so one showing up has more heft.  Almost like they’re a rarity instead of the norm.

Will Lord Highrider continue after Family of the Tri-Rune?  I’m sure he’ll appear from time to time.  He’s a regional character, so I can only use him when the heroes are around Hero’s Gate.  Same thing with Duke Solomon, Alyssa Goldheart, Daniel Skyblade, and all political characters.  Such at type is hard to have travel outside their realm of influence.

Plunging

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

A single push
Last of a series
When the mind takes too much
Unable to process
Or leap beyond the gloom

Ridiculous statements
Misunderstanding the core
Getting over it
Sucking it up
Easier to say than understand

Mind spinning
With pressure crushing
As if a weight has dropped
Upon the heart and spirit
Cloaking the sun from view

It continues unabated
Every stress piling into a mountain
Dwarfing Everest
In sense of size and cold
Trapped upon the choking peak

So easy to spout words
At those that suffer so
Never realizing
That they see no light
Beyond that glinting off a blade

A to Z Challenge

Duck Hunt from Nintendo Meme

Duck Hunt from Nintendo Meme

So, I’m considering joining the ‘A to Z Challenge’ in April.  Basically, you post every day (minus Sundays) while working through the alphabet.  Each post has to have a theme or connection to the letter of the day.

I’m on the fence here because I’ll be in the last 1/3 of Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue by that point and April tends to be full of chaos.  Though, the other 11 months don’t do much better from what I’ve seen.  Anyway, I’m struggling to think of a theme before I sign up.  Also I can’t find the sign up sheet.

I want to flex my imagination here, so an ‘Indie Author Help’ topic every day is going to be off the list.  I played around with thoughts of designing a monster around that letter and a maybe a poem for it every day.  They would be like the Bestiary of Blatherhorn Vale poems in that they describe the creature and some of its habits.  Sadly, it seems to have been done by others.  I’m even playing with the idea of trying to tell a story throughout the month with a character trying to escape a dungeon.  Each challenge will deal with a letter and it would be all narrative with a 500 word minimum.  Going to be complicated, which might be an issue with my other projects.

That seems to be where I trip up on prompts, themes, and anything that requires some level of focus.  I’m so caught up in my other projects and I’ve lived a life of being repeatedly sideswiped by events that it’s become really hard to agree to things.  I keep fearing that I’ll have to quit and let people down.  I’m starting to feel that way with Legends of Windemere right now.  My ‘vacation’ is already looking like it will encompass the first week of February, so I can actually relax and get some of these projects done.  Yeah, yeah.  Pathetic excuses that I should keep to myself.

Maybe I’ll figure something out for this challenge over the weekend and make enough progress that I can start writing after Super Bowl.  Won’t be able to get anything done around here before that.

Edit:  I just realized that Spring Recess appears in the middle of April.  That means I’d have to do this challenge, write a book, promote the other books, and handle the toddler being home.  I believe I’m out unless I gain some sudden insight or go the poem route.

Fizzle: The Powerful Mascot, Sidekick, or Protector of the Heroes?

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

For people who have been here a while, Fizzle is easily recognized.  Possibly the most popular character of the Legends of Windemere series.  That isn’t to say he hasn’t gotten a few criticisms.  This little dragon is a little misleading, which is one of his themes.

Misleading Appearance

Fizzle is small with his tail being longer than his body and his wings are those of a dragonfly instead of leather like a big dragon.  He speaks like a child after learning Tradespeak from a little girl.  All of this combines to create a sense of what some call cute innocence and others call redneck idiot dragon.  It’s his speech pattern that causes the most trouble, which is something that improves over time.  Something that readers and other characters tend to forget is that Fizzle is old.  He is a symbol that you can’t judge someone by appearances because there might be underlying reasons for why they are the way they are.  Fizzle has the most powerful magic and incredible knowledge.  The few times he does speak in his native tongue, you can tell how serious and wise he really is.

Love of Life

One aspect of Fizzle’s personality is that he is usually happy and upbeat.  He will get angry and upset, but there is a big lust for life in this little character.  With this piece of him, I think he acts as a beacon for the heroes who will be going through tough times.  Part of this is his indulgence in apples and his near awe at discovering how many varieties there are as well as things you can do with them.  It’s difficult for the heroes to fall into full depression with Fizzle around, which is an important aspect to this character.  While he might not be one of the ‘big heroes’, he is very much the hero of the heroes.  Other ways too, but those are spoilers.

The Questioner

With all of his wisdom and knowledge, Fizzle has spent most of his time in Visindor Forest.  Legends of Windemere is the first time he has ventured out of his territory for an extended period.  So, he doesn’t understand a lot of the cultures and habits of the city people.  This creates a bridge to help readers learn about the world as well, but it also shows differences and similarities between the wild and civilization.  I’ve heard one person call Fizzle a ‘babe out of the woods’ years ago, which is an interesting explanation. He doesn’t understand various parts of civilization because they make no sense to him, which he mentions.  Part of his evolution is to learn about the cities and decide on what he will do when the adventures are done.  Can he even return to Visindor Forest after everything that happens to him?

Authors: You’re not Alone

An excellent post about how Indie Authors aren’t really alone!

chrismcmullen's avatarchrismcmullen

Alone

Alone

It’s easy to feel alone:

  • You sit down and write your book all by yourself.
  • If you self-publish, you do it yourself.
  • Marketing is up to you.

Indie ≠ Alone

It’s really indie publishing, not self-publishing.

  • Indie = independent. Independent means you’re the boss, you make the decisions, you have freedom, etc. Independence doesn’t mean you have to do it yourself. Choose not to be alone, if you wish.

Where Is Everyone?

Get connected:

  • Meet fellow authors. Interact with them. Read about their experiences. Discuss your publishing experience.
  • Ask for help. Others have worn your shoes. Advice is easy to give. Search for ideas. Post a question.
  • There are many free, helpful, positive, interactive author communities on the internet. You just have to look.
  • Need professional help? There are many editing, formatting, and illustration services available by many editors, designers, small publishers, and businesses. You can find affordable and reliable…

The Timeless, Mindless Monster

Evolution of Godzilla

Evolution of Godzilla

I’m not sure how old I was when I stumbled onto King Kong and Godzilla.  I had to have bee in elementary school and younger than 10 when I saw the original King Kong.  I caught the original Godzilla around the same time.  One day I was shown the original Rodan and that freaked me out.  After that, a friend showed me King Kong vs Godzilla and pointed out that our local video store had a ton of these films.  I became a major fan of Godzilla for a few years and then moved on when I couldn’t find the films anymore.  I’d catch a flick from time to time and sat through the 1998 film.  At the time, I liked it because I hadn’t seen any for a while.  Now, I’m not a real fan and am kind of glad that the people behind the real Godzilla wrote the Fish-Eater out of his evolution chain.  They renamed it Zilla (stating that the American version took the ‘God’ out of the monster) and he appeared in Godzilla: Final Wars to have the shortest fight with Godzilla in the history of the franchise.  I really need to get back into these movies when my son is old enough to enough them.

The point of this post is to say that I think this type of character is overlooked by authors and artists.  People love the human monsters like Dracula and Wolfman because they’re easier to connect with.  They resemble us more than the enormous bipedal lizard with atomic breath.  Still, Godzilla has personality and presence without being able to have words.  He even has a kid in some of the movies.

I think the raw power and mystery of Godzilla is part of his appeal.  As a character, he has to depend on actions and instinct that fit his monstrous role.  He can be a villain and a hero depending on what he is fighting.  There are ways to control him and events that bring out a sensitive side.  I’ve always found it amazing how such a character has depth and personality.  In a book, you would have a lot of trouble creating such a character because they’d have no dialogue.  I’m considering trying it though when I make any characters that come from the giltris (lizard people) tribes.  In film and television, you have the visual of facial expressions and movements.  I’d love to give this a shot though to see if I can do it.

Anybody else a fan of these movies or an author considering trying their hand at a primal monster character?
