The Hellfire Elf: Catalyst for a Hero

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

The first obstacle that Luke Callindor has to face in Beginning of a Hero, one could say this demon started him off as a hero.  While it doesn’t really evolve due to its role, the Hellfire Elf is a little more than an expendable assassin.  Its existence introduces the world of demons to the reader and holds a special theme for Luke.  There is also a smaller theme.

Fear of the First Step

One of Luke’s themes is courage, so it isn’t too surprising that the Hellfire Elf holds a theme of fear.  It is much stronger than Luke and the Chaoswind Blade gives itan even bigger edge.  With a blade that causes extreme pain to an enemy, the demon is obviously the superior.  In fact, the only thing that keeps Luke alive at some points is the demon’s belief that he isn’t a threat.  So, it never pursues beyond its orders until it realizes that this ‘whelp’ is a danger.

The Hellfire Elf acts as a being of terror for Luke even though he doesn’t show that he’s afraid.  Through the demon, he is given his first scar and nearly dies. A shock to the system of a cocky hero, which plants him rather firmly on the path to being a more careful hero.  It is a small theme in the grand scheme of things, but an important one for a fledgling warrior.  It’s the fear of nearly dying and the memory of what the Hellfire Elf put him through that looms up to either drive him forward or take caution.

Growing ‘Human’

A minor part that gets explored more in a scene with a Spurge, the Hellfire Elf demonstrates that demons slowly become more ‘human’.  By ‘human’, I mean that they develop emotions instead of remaining bound solely by their orders.  Many times they adopt the emotions and habits of the mortals they spend their time around.  You can see the Hellfire Elf begin to enjoy its rivalry with Luke and develop similar traits.  Will this play into a later book or another series?  Definitely.

Losing the Shiny

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

I wonder if this is a danger of being an indie author that I never considered:

Losing the shiny, new author effect.

Here me out on this strange ramble.  A new author will come out like a lightning bolt with the right amount of marketing.  They get attention and this is the shiny.  It keeps going, but readers start dropping out as more books come out.  Not everyone goes from Book 1 to Book 2 and so on.  Add into this that the author has already emerged and has ‘shown their hand’ in terms of story and style.  The curiosity is gone and you’ve done so many author interviews and guest blogs that you don’t know where else to go.  You now have some tarnish and no publishing company to help you retain your freshness.

I’ve been thinking about this even though I’m still selling books.  Definitely slower, so I can say that my ‘shininess’ isn’t as bright.  In fact, a few debuting and aspiring authors have called me a veteran, which feels weird.  Now I’m just talking like I’m an old man, but I’m definitely not the fresh-faced youth from a year ago.  I’ll admit that I’m not that sure of what to do for marketing beyond the site ads.  I feel like I’ve used up a lot of one-shot opportunities.  Maybe I am feeling nothing more than old and a little worn around the edges.

I do remember at the beginning I was pouncing on guest blogs and interviews, but I’ve written on so many topics that I don’t know what to do there any more.  Same with interviews.  Maybe I launched out of the gate too quickly a year ago.  I don’t even know what to do as a celebration of Beginning of a Hero being out for a year.  Have I gotten sluggish and lazy?

So, what do you do when you aren’t as shiny as you once were?  Besides accept it since it happens to everyone.

What Do You Think of Heroes Having Kids?

Harry Potter Family

Harry Potter Family

One of the most common endings to a hero’s genre (besides death) is settling down and having kids.  That epilogue where the hero is seen with his or her young child is a hallmark of fantasy endings.  Many people scoff at the happy ending, but I feel that many characters earn this.  Authors put them through hell, bring them back, and toss them back in again.  They witness events and do things that will probably haunt their dreams.  So, maybe they earned the happy family.

This event can also happen to a hero in the middle of an adventure, which tends to signify one of a few things:

  1. The character will be retired and adventure will finish with a new hero.
  2. The adventure will be pushed on many years, so the children will continue.
  3. The character’s family will be killed/kidnapped/corrupted and he/she will be an angry, bitter hero.

Personally, I always worry when a hero has a kid and I know there are more books coming up.  Messing with a person’s family is a classic method of getting a stale hero back onto the road and set up a personality change.  Imagine what would happen if someone killed Harry Potter’s kids?  We’d get a new series with a darker edge.  It’s a dangerous path though because those who loved the happier version of a hero won’t be happy.  Some fans will take the family as closure and refuse to carry on under the belief that you’re only doing it for money.  Yet, you’ll gain fans who enjoy a fallen hero.  It’s all in what you feel is right for the character and yourself when you give them a family.  I know when my surviving heroes have kids, they’re designated to cameos.

So, what do people think of the ‘now has kids’ ending?  What about having kids mid-adventure?

Noise

An amazing tanka from Pamela. Check out her site and enjoy her daily poems.

Pamela Beckford's avatarPoetry by Pamela

A quick little tanka for Charles as I feel his pain

Wild cacophony
Of sounds creating chaos.
Where are the whispers?
Banging, clanging and yelling
When soft sounds could work as well.

Every Sound

Like nails on a chalkboard
Or glass shards
Churning in a blender
My ears bleed
And my mind cries
At the torrent of noise

How do these creatures live?
Surrounded by such clamor
Slamming doors
No inside voice
Such an endless din
That drives my thoughts away

A moment of silence
Terrifying and unclear
Almost like a knife
Tearing at my chest
Anxiety that the quiet will shatter
With an echoing screech

Kindle e-book Prices and Royalties

Great post about Kindle eBook Pricing. Information for both sides of the high/low pricing coin.

Prices

What Is the Best Kindle Price?

That’s the million-dollar question. The answer also varies from book to book.

A recent article from TechCrunch points out that the $9-10 price range is the most profitable list price for e-books in the United States, evaluating sales data for all books—i.e. it includes both traditionally and indie published e-books. Click here to check it. It’s short and makes some informative points for both US and UK pricing.

However, the article doesn’t make a few points that may be particularly significant for indie authors:

  • Thousands of traditionally published e-books are priced at $9.99 and sell frequently because the authors are quite popular. Think about it: If a hardcover is selling dozens of copies per day at $35 or if a trade paperback is selling frequently at $25, then $9.99 is an enticing e-book price.
  • Many e-books that would be priced between $10 and $20…
