I alluded to working on a project – and now I’m going to unveil that project. Only a couple of good friends were even aware of this. But I took the plunge and published a collection of my love poems.

I have been supported by one friend in particular and without her encouragement, this would never have happened. So, if you have enjoyed my poetry, please check this out. There are a couple of new poems in it that have not been on this blog. Oh, and be kind. This was my first attempt at anything like this ever.

Legends of Windemere Movie Role Call! INTERACTIVE!

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

After a series of bad weeks and terrible weather, I’m looking to have some fun.  So, I’m writing more of Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue.  I also want to share this fun and make an interactive post.  Hopefully this works out.

One of the most common questions I get in author interviews is ‘Who do you want to be in a Legends of Windemere movie?’  I sputter and sprint for IMDB, my DVDs, and the TV channel guide to find answers.  The truth is that I have very little idea of who could play these characters.  Part of this is that I see them as individuals and I’m out of the loop on a lot of modern celebrities.  Also, I’ve noticed that many books that go to film put young, relatively unknown actors in the main roles.  So, I could pick a dream cast and it still wouldn’t feel right because I kind of want a few roles to go to unknowns.

So, where is the fun?  Here:

Comment with your cast choices!

If you’ve read the books or know the characters from this blog then throw some names out for who you want to see in their shoes.  I think this will be a lot of fun and if I get enough responses and variety then I’ll make a post of Polls where people can vote on their favorite.  By the end of the weekend, we might just have a Legends of Windemere cast to send to Hollywood.

Here are the roles to make things easier, but you can just pick your favorites or even cast a minor character that I missed:

  • Luke Callindor
  • Fizzle
  • Nyx
  • Fritz Warrenberg
  • Nimby
  • Aedyn Karwyn
  • Sari
  • The Lich
  • Trinity
  • Hellfire Elf
  • Kira Grasdon
  • Selenia Hamilton

The Final Battle: Speeches, Violence, and Possible Closure

Now, there are all types of final ‘battles’ that one can do with an action-based story.  A grand chase to freedom, armies crashing, slaying of a great beast, defeat without killing the enemy, and many others.  I could spend the entire day creating various scenarios.  Instead, I’m going to list a few components that can help focus a final battle:

  1. Villain Speech–  It’s written into nearly every villain contract that a gloating speech must be made at least once.  Typically, when the hero is captured or on the ropes, which tends to happen in a final battle.  It could be the starting point or the mid point of the event.  If you want to be unique, have it at the end when their head is no longer attached to their body.  (Note: It only works with villains who can talk after a beheading.)  This helps focus a character’s mentality, reasons, and stall for a page or two to help figure out what you’re going do.  Besides, your characters are civilized and simply slamming into each other without talking is so barbaric.
  2. Hero Speech–  This isn’t in the contract, but your heroes might have the urge to talk before battling.  Instead of gloating, this is in the form of noble declarations and/or accusations.  Many times it’s reminding the villain that he’s bad, which is either denied or gets a ‘No Shit, Sherlock’ comment.  One area where such a speech helps is when the hero is on the ropes and feels like he/she/it is about to lose.  Without going for too long or making it internal, the hero can use it as a personal rally for a second wind.
  3. Landscapers’ Nightmare–  If action is necessary for the confrontation then you’re going to need some property damage.  Look at any superhero movie and realize that you can’t beat a villain without messing up several buildings or famous monuments.  Trees uprooted and craters left by magic, sword slashes in the priceless tapestries, broken windows, and busted furniture are par for the course.  After all, this is a life and death struggle where only one person will come out alive.  The destruction helps showcase the level of importance and release of limits.
  4. Innocent Bystanders for Various Reasons–  Nobody ever evacuates before a disaster in some books and movies.  The most obvious reason is because the common folk are idiots in all stories.  Still, they make good distractions and human shields.  Heroes will dive into attacks to save them and villains will hold them up to put the hero in a difficult position.  If anything you need witnesses for the big battle.  Not that these characters have names or will talk to the reader.  Maybe they act as surrogates for the reader or explain how news of the events carry.
  5. Death Isn’t Always the End–  Most final battles end with one of the main characters, but this isn’t always necessary.  Sure, you confirm that the loser isn’t going to return and the winner’s agenda carries on.  Yet, it can be more powerful to have a hero or villain break at the end instead of die.  It’s more of a strike against what they stood for if they simply give up.  On the other hand, death really drives home the fact that the story is over.
  6. Battle Damage!–  You see in a lot of movies, shows, and read in books about final battles where the action is high and the personal damage is low.  Did that normal guy really just step out a fallen building with nothing more than a splinter?  Fireball to the face equals an annoying sunburn?  In general, a great final battle should have the winner nearly collapsing at the end.  Broken bones, cuts, burns, missing parts, and whatever else you can put in without killing the character.  People might complain that you go too far, but remember that a life/death fight can create a powerful adrenaline rush.  It isn’t a cure all, but it can explain an injured character continuing to fight.

Snow Day Part II

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

Well, today is another snow day even though there’s no snow coming down.  It’s freezing rain.  That nightmarish precipitation that turns all roads and walkways into sheets of ice that are just begging to hurt you.  I hate this type of weather more than snow because of the danger it creates.

Of course, the buses aren’t running, so the toddler is staying home.  In reality, his school day is delayed and he’s supposed to go in later.  Yet, no buses and the local news is screaming for people to not go out unless it’s an emergency.  He’s staying home because even if I get him to school, I’ll have to drive back out to get him.  The weather is supposed to get more icy too, so he gets another day of sleeping in and playing with his trains.

Sadly, this means he misses out on the book fair they were having today.  I’m not too upset because we’ve been given so many hand-me-down books that there are piles of them on his floor.  He only wants us to read 4 books to him too:

  1. Yertle the Turtle
  2. Puff the Magic Dragon
  3. Oh, The Thinks You Can Think
  4. A Finding Nemo book about Perseverance.

Due to this weather, work and school have been iffy.  Greg’s visit has been pushed back to the weekend, which means I won’t be around much on Saturday.  Then we get our next big storm Sunday night into Monday, but the toddler has off from school all of next week.  I really do hate how these storms keep hitting on the days that my wife is supposed to work, so she can’t get into work.  She tries and then the car gets stuck, so we’ll see what happens today.

Maybe employers should do something in regards to snow days that doesn’t cost an employee pay or sick days.  It isn’t an employee’s fault that bad weather happens and roads are impassable, so why be penalized?  This is one of the things I truly hated about office work.  You felt like you were punished for things beyond your control like bad weather and disease.  It led to such foolish acts as driving in blinding snowstorms and going in sick.  I love how I was always told to stay home during these moments for my own good, but that one day off is critical when you’re living paycheck to paycheck.  I’m ranting now and nothing will ever change here, but it really is sad that people are put in these positions.

Kira Grasdon: The Conflicted Chameleon

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Kira Grasdon is a difficult character for me and she seems to be creating the biggest amount of debate.  That’s not the point of this though.  Her themes make her a complicated supporting cast member.  With her physical absence in some of the books, she has to grow in leaps and bounds.  Her influence over events has to either be severe when she’s around or able to continue without her presence.  Now, I’ve already discussed the romance part of her a few times, so I’m leaving that out here.

Culture Challenges

This is more of a teaser than a spoiler.  While Luke Callindor has been having trouble adopting the open relationship tradition of Kira’s people, she is struggling to figure out how to work it with an absent boyfriend.  It will be revealed that much of this tradition revolves around meeting the other partners and discussing them.  Kira’s absence while Luke courts others puts a strain on her that will grow into a conflict of ‘Heart vs Upbringing’.  For those wondering, this explodes in book 7, which is what I just started writing.  I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out and it’s where I get to finally push Kira extremely far in her evolution.

Playing the Game

One of the things that Luke and Kira share is that they were born into famous families with expectations on them.  This is why they enjoy being able to be natural around each other.  Now, Luke comes from warriors and has set off to prove himself while openly trying to battle his pre-existing fame.  Kira goes another route by learning the game of high society and changing her personality/mood depending on what is expected of her.  Ilan Callindor says she sounds two-faced and he might be right.  In fact, some people have agreed with him and disliked her non-clumsy persona, which was another facade. A question that always comes up to me is which face is her true face.  Again, there is going to have to be an event that forces her to grow up and develop a ‘final form’ as it were.

New Plan for the Week

Have some laughs with Eddie Izzard.  Need some laughs because all those plans I mentioned yesterday have gone horribly wrong.  One snowstorm throws everything into a meat grinder.  So, I spent today reading The Crimson League and I’m going to work on a few future writing ideas before bed.

Greg’s visit has been delayed or cancelled depending on an event.  This falls into the theory that some all-powerful being hates it when we make plans.  Greg and I have yet to make a plan that goes smoothly if it happens at all.  Last time it almost went smoothly until he slept through his subway stop and I wandered away from where we were supposed to meet.  This time was snow and bastards.

What will I do now?  Well, I’m going to start writing the next Legends of Windemere book and see what happens.  Seems I’ll have tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday to get some work done.  That means I can feasibly get 2 chapters written before next week when the toddler is home.  No idea what’s going on that week, but I do know that we’re getting snow on Monday . . . I despise that groundhog.
