Origins: The Krypters

Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist

Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist

For anyone who has read the blurb for Family of the Tri-Rune, you’ve heard of the Krypters.  They are the ravenous undead that appear around Hero’s Gate and cause a lot of trouble.  This is their story . . . sort of.  It’s simply where these critters came from and how they came to be what they are now.

Way back in the game, Luke and Nyx ran into things called something.  I don’t remember what undead they originally were, but I called them Shadowspawn because they were solid shadows.  Eventually, I gave them their black and red coloration and took away their eyes to make them even creepier.  Honestly, I’d love to see pictures or a movie with these things because they’re one of my favorite created monsters.  Anyway, I needed a new name because I didn’t want to write ‘Shadowspawn’ all the time.  The term ‘Krypters’ came to mind and that’s what kicked off their origin story.

You see, they were simply there when I first had them in Hero’s Gate.  No reason and no plan to ever use them again, so they had no real meat to them.  Then I wrote Prodigy of Rainbow Tower and Nyx did what she did, which you would know if you read the book or the blurb for book 4.  That became a major event for her and it birthed the Krypters.  They became undead beasts forged from Nyx’s violated magic and they wanted nothing more than to devour her.  I didn’t realize how eerie that connection would be and what would come from it.  Probably wouldn’t be that interesting if I did plan it.

When Nyx first encounters the Krypters, she’s already seen that it took wiping out a city block to kill a few of them.  All she saw was the aftermath and I had some massive powers in mind for them.  What happens?  I gave them 1 power . . . the ability to absorb and grow stronger from Nyx’s magic.  I already knew they wanted to eat her, but I never really considered why.  Suddenly, I had them chow down on the fire spell she chucked their way and they mutated.  I’m used to going back to the drawing board, so I prepared for the worst.  Thankfully, it worked and the Krypters grew into the screeching, shape-shifting monsters that I really wish I could find a way to use again.

That’s the shame with these monsters.  They’re so closely connected to Nyx that I can only bring them back to deal with her.  Even so, they were tied to Hero’s Gate.  Unless I can think up a really good and plausible reason for Krypters to be somewhere else, they’re only going to be found in Family of the Tri-Rune.  As I write this, I can think of a stretched way to bring one or two back, but undead don’t breed.  Maybe it’s for the best that they remain a one book creature.  That way I won’t be tempted to overuse them.

Eat, Sleep, Write: Podcast Interview with Charles E. Yallowitz

A little over a week ago, I sat down for an interview with Adam Scull who runs Eat, Sleep, Write.  Well, it’s up now and you can click on the picture at the bottom to hear it.

It’s about world-building in fantasy, which was a great topic for my first big podcast interview.  I talk a little about my experiences in self-publishing too.  I think everyone will have some fun and I hope I didn’t stutter or race through my words too much.  You can tell I was nervous.

If anyone wants to share the link to this interview then I’d greatly appreciate it.  Enjoy.

‘The Hopeteller’

Just a quick update as to the novella project entitled: ‘THE HOPETELLER’.  This is a combination of post-apocalyptic journal and fairy tale.  Well, I just finished it and now it’s up to editing and cover art.  Both should be done by the end of the month, so I’m hoping for a June 1st debut.  This isn’t going to be a promotional thing like my novels, but I’ll try to put together a cover reveal if I can.  I will probably post it for opinions to see what needs to be fixed up.  Anyway, here is the blurb that I wrote up for it:

Humanity has been driven into the wilderness by the ‘Invaders’. They have been forced to live as colonies in the wilderness where survival is a daily struggle. Hope becomes harder and harder to hold onto as the years pass.

Then one day, a young man tells a story to an injured friend and the Hopeteller is born. Unsure of the power of his words, he finds himself moving the colony with his fairy tales. He will see his people through death and fear as they continue to fight for survival.

Enjoy this novella that is half post-apocalyptic journal and half fairy tales.

Party in the Caster Swamp

The Lich– Do we have a question to work with here?

General Vile– I believe we are supposed to discuss being villains and our various motivations.

Trinity– There aren’t many of us here.  The big boys were told to stay out of this since nobody knows about them.

Yola Biggs– I’m a villain?

Nyder Fortune– Well, you’re not exactly a good guy.  Maybe it’s best that you sit there and play with some string.  We each have our own reasons for being who we are.  Maybe we give the audience a good variety.

Hellfire Elf– I was summoned to kill and that is my only reason.

Vile– I enjoy the challenge since my master is the only one to offer a halfling like myself a position of power.  Very few of my people are generals since we are more of a naval force.

Lich– That’s your reason?  I thought you simply enjoy killing people in honorable combat and uncovering secrets.

Vile– I was hoping to come off as more noble and thoughtful.  Not that I would expect much from a power-hungry coward like you.

Lich– I’ll have you know that I’m highly loyal to my dark master.  More so than any of you.  I know how each of you plot against him or prefer to stay in the safety of his shadow.

Nyder–  I was about to agree with you until that last crack.  For those of us who don’t fight, our master’s shadow is where we belong.  Without me, those precious Weapon Dragons and other toys that all of you depend on wouldn’t exist.

Yola Biggs–  Like that bar of bubble stuff that you keep throwing at my head?

Vile– That’s soap and he didn’t throw it.  You ate it because you mistook it for candy.  Did anyone notice how quiet Trinity is?

Nyder– I think she’s uncomfortable considering she falls into a different category than the rest of us.  Each one of us has a selfish reason for being with our dark master.  My lust for dark knowledge, the Lich wants power, Vile wants battle, and Yola . . . I don’t think she can even spell reason so she doesn’t count.

Trinity– And I’m here because my people are basically hostages.  If I turn against our master then my people will suffer.  I’m the suffering villain who can go any direction depending on events.  Though, I really do hate Nyx, so I guess I have a little in common with all of you.

Yola–  Yay!  She likes us!

Hellfire Elf–  I’m still not sure what we’re doing here.  I expected more humor considering how these things tend to degrade.

Lich–  It’s possible that we’re more serious and mature than the heroes.

Vile–  Is that a good or a bad thing?

Nyder–  I think it’s something that means this little chat is at an end.  After all, we voiced our reasons to the best of our ability and enticed people to read the books.  Then again, I’m background and Vile doesn’t get to really shine until Book 5.  It’s all about the Lich and Trinity some days.

Yola–  Don’t forget about . . . ‘Bob’.  Such an odd name.

Trinity–  Just thinking about that monster makes my skin crawl.  I can’t wait until he’s out in the open and we get to see what readers think of him.  Truly a disgusting, horrific, arrogant bastard.

Hellfire Elf–  Now, I’m curious about this ‘Bob’.

Vile– Do you think it’s too mean to tease about a book that’s still a few months away?

Lich– We’re villains.  It’s what we do.

Welcome to Henchman Emporium!

Homunculi from Fullmetal Alchemist

Homunculi from Fullmetal Alchemist

Welcome, potential evildoer, to the store where we have minions, lackeys, henchmen, fodder, and whatever other human resources you need.  You’re not a cop or a hero in disguise, are you?  Of course not.  The dogs would have already torn your throat out if you were.  What dogs?  Best you don’t ask and pretend you didn’t hear anything.  So, what can I get for you?

First timer with a powerful hero to contend with?  Wow, I don’t want to know what you did to get that racket.  Seriously, I don’t care about origins because I’m not your therapist or friend.  Now, it sounds like you need a wide variety of underlings.  I suggest getting Combo 37, which includes a small army of nameless drones, an altered death squad of three to five codenamed henchmen, and a powerful right hand assistant.  No, the gender and powers are up to you.  Grab one of those clipboards and start filling out the form while I show you around the warehouse.  Watch where you go since we had a small . . . incident and are still cleaning the floors.

Don’t worry about the drones since they’re around to get destroyed by the hero, so we’ll create an army based on the others.  Given you have a flying and beam-shooting enemy, I recommend a four person death squad.  Five would be overkill and three feels like it won’t be enough.  Might I suggest a bruiser, a reflector, a speedster, and the hot one who doesn’t do anything besides looking pretty.  Yes, I have that last one in male.  You can do whatever you want with him, but the warranty is voided if you hurt, kill, or marry him.  No, making an example of him won’t void the warranty, but we do require you give us a written explanation and the body within 48 hours.  The only reason for an extension is if you’re in jail and there are no agents to contact us.  Though, we’ll know about that simply by watching the news and our spy cameras.  What spy cameras?  Don’t worry about.  Standard issue in our business. Here, have a cupcake while we move on to your main henchman.

Now, you’re a technology-based villain as I can see from the funny gun at your hip and all the gizmos on your head.  That’s your hair?  Kids these days.  So, what kind of villain are you?  Summoned from the hell of the future to get revenge on your former master’s enemies, but he was killed soon after you arrived.  So, you have no idea what you’re doing here and are simply going for world domination?  I have a power absorber in stock that can help with your enemy and be used as a battery for any doomsday weapons.  There’s a sale on psionic henchman where you buy one and get a mindlinked one for half off.  They count as one agent since they share the same psychic space.  The only thing is that losing one means the other is useless or insane.  We’ve also had a few complaints about them trying to absorb each other in a mental war of wills.  If that happens then we’ll give you store credit and . . . refund?  Only if you can fight your way to the portal in the basement and defeat Cthulu.  He’s your uncle?  In that case, I’ll throw in a tropical island lair on your next purchase.  What if you win the first time?  That’s adorable.

Benefits of Using Darker Perspectives

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Let’s just jump right into the list here.  The topic is why writing a few scenes that focus on the villains can help your story.  Again, you don’t see these very often unless the hero or a supporting character is involved.  At best, you’ll get the villain screaming at his or her minions or ruing the actions of the heroes.  Nothing with real meat, so here are some reasons you might want to highlight a villain.

  1. These scenes can bring depth to the bad guy and make them more than ‘the person that the hero has to defeat’.  They become something tangible and ‘human’ with more stake in the overall story.  A few good glimpses into their lives can transform the antagonist from plot to device to a memorable character.
  2. Hearing the story from the villain’s side can bring clarity to their motivation.  Heroes will also show things as ‘that guy is evil’ and you need other villains to disagree with them.  Peasants won’t do it because then you get the feeling that the antagonist isn’t really hated, which only works if that’s what you’re going for.  By having the villain act and talk in front of the reader, you bring more insight into their reason for doing whatever it is that people want to stop.  Even if it’s simply to be evil, a scene or two demonstrating this will lock it in place for the reader.
  3. You can thicken the overall plot by adding this perspective.  It’s no longer a one-sided tale from the eyes of the hero.  You get an idea that more is going on and that other events are occurring as the hero progresses.  Otherwise, it feels like the villain is merely sitting off-stage waiting for his or her cue.  Again, you want an antagonist to be a character and not just a plot device.
  4. A villain sees the world in a different way and they might know about the darker side of things.  How does the underbelly of Windemere work?  Hard to tell through Luke Callindor and the other heroes.  Yet, a few scenes with the Lich or Trinity and you get an idea of what lurks in the shadows.  Many starting authors spend so much time on the side of the heroes that they forget to explore the shadows, which leaves a lot of questions and curiosities.  In some cases, it feels like you only see half of the world.  The same thing goes for any authors who delve entirely on the side of the villains.  It creates an imbalance.
  5. If you go by the idea that characters are like your children then you have to remember that your bad guys are part of that.  You spent a lot of time making them, so why not give them a little time to shine?  Personally, I like hearing compliments about my villains and knowing they have some fans.  That wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t give them a few personal scenes.

An Adventure Tomorrow

Well, I’ll be gone for tomorrow and going on an adventure.  Sort of.  I’m helping a friend out with something baseball related.  I get to be a techie here, which is smart because I can’t play baseball even if my life depends on it.  Hence the song above only I wasn’t as capable.

In other news, I’m already done with 4 of the 7 fairy tales for the novella.  I’ll definitely be done by the weekend, which means back to Windemere next week.  This has been a lot of fun and a big challenge.  I slip into past tense at times and I’m not used to first person POV.  Add in the difficulty in fairy tale structure, which has repetition and simplicity.  One thing I’m not used to and the other is frowned up on novels.

This is really shaping up to be a tiring week.  Still exciting and fun.
