Midweek Head Mess

I Climbed!

I Climbed!

No school for weeks
While mommy is away
No more time for Frozen
Only time to play
Trains going down the hallway
Books scattered on the rugs
Legos oddly clean

One nightmare’s all it takes
Because mommy can’t stay up
Leaving daddy to try his best
A bath at 2 AM?
Then chatting for an hour
Daddy not look good today
Perfect time to play

Really hope this day runs smoother than the night.  No idea what to do with him, but I don’t have it in me to go very far from the house.  Maybe make it a backyard day and possibly head out somewhere for lunch.  Need to fix his library card too since people never seem to spell his name right.  Even if it’s in front of them, they still put an ‘e’ instead of an ‘a’.

If you have Magic Healers, why are there still diseases?

White Mage from Final Fantasy

White Mage from Final Fantasy

This is a fair question since magic can do so much, especially when you have healing potions and magic doctors.  So many people get confused when people are dying of diseases and injuries.  It gets even more baffling when you have priests who heal people for free.  That removes the concept that people can’t afford a healer, which happens a lot in an attempt to either explain the existence of diseases or make all priests in the world come off like greedy bastards.

Windemere has a few reasons why diseases still exist.  The smaller reason is that priests are not everywhere.  You get sick in the wilderness, at sea, or in a town without a healer then you can die.  Priests are also not stationed everywhere so there are areas where you need to send for one or pray to the gods that one happens by.  Even then, there is no guarantee that the disease can be cured.  That brings me to the main reason people still die from getting sick.

I’ve mentioned a few times that everything in Windemere has a magical aura.  I mean EVERYTHING!  For example, inanimate objects have them even though they rarely put up a form of defense against magic.  So it isn’t too hard to believe that disease possess their own aura and magical resistance.  This means that a priest needs to get his or her aura to override the disease, which factors in the following:

  • Experience of the priest.  Younger followers will be weaker and only get stronger through experience.  Old priests with a high cure rate rarely travel too because of their age.
  • Severity and duration of the disease.  The longer and more severe, the harder to cure.
  • Resistance of the disease much like how we have Antibiotic Resistant Viruses.
  • God of the priest.  Neberith the Goddess of Healing would give more oomph than Skragor the God of Disaster.
  • Overall health of patient’s aura.  A priest can boost their own success by utilizing their patient’s inner magic, but you have a problem if that has been weakened.

So you can see how curing a disease in Windemere isn’t as easy as hurling a fireball at a goblin.  This is why priests don’t charge for the service because they can never guarantee success.  There are a few potions that can do it, but those take a long time to make and cost a lot.  Potions, scrolls, and other items like that are how temples make money beyond donations.  Even then, there’s always a chance that the disease might react poorly to the potion and the situation gets worse.

Guess now everyone can see why Aedyn Karwyn spends so much time praying.

What Do the Dragons of Windemere Eat?

Dragon from Record of Lodoss War

Dragon from Record of Lodoss War

One question that comes up a lot for fantasy in general is what dragons eat.  You would think meat and you’d be right.  The question really stems from wondering how a creature so massive can exist without wiping out an ecosystem.  I’ve seen responses about very slow metabolisms to make meals last longer, eating lava, and other interesting concepts.  Now it’s my turn to explain the diets of the Windemere dragons and I’ll be starting off with the easy ones.

Weapon Dragons

These are the evil beasts that mysteriously appeared in Windemere and decompose or explode if their corpses are disturbed.  They are occasionally called ‘Fake Dragons’ because they’re constructs.  The Fortune family builds them from cultivated or stolen dragon parts and machines.  So they ‘eat’ oil and consume victims that are not digested so much as left to rot in their non-functional stomachs.  Now there have been one or two that were more creature than machine and they fed off corpses.  Not that I have a future story where this comes into play or anything.  🙂

Drite

Everyone’s favorite tiny dragon makes this answer obvious.  Fizzle eats fruit and cookies, but he can eat bugs if he feels like it.  Drites are omnivores in harsh times even though they prefer fruit.

Natural Dragons

Here is the one where a true explanation is needed.  These creatures will eat meat, fruit, vegetables, and whatever else they have a hankering for.  Yet, this nourishment is supplemental and more common when they have babies to feed.  The real meal comes from Windemere itself.  Dragons are magical creatures that constantly absorb the ambient aura of the world.  There is no risk of them having too much, but if there is ever a time where magic is lost then they could die out.

Now, each dragon does have a method of getting extra aura by eating something from their environment.  This happens when they are sick, need more magic for breeding, or the area is having an aura drought:

  • Sirynian Dragons- Glacial dragons eat pure ice found on the underside of floes.
  • Aquestar Dragons- Desert dragons that eat wet sand and they’ll do this as a snack too.
  • Verenstone Dragons- Volcanic dragons that eat lava and heat.
  • Darkvawn Dragons- Jungle dragons that eat leaves and certain jungle vines.
  • Kelynmire Dragons- Swamp dragons that drink clean water.

That’s the diet of Windemere dragons.  Not as complicated as one would think, but it does show how potent the magic of the world is.  After all, it can sustain such large and powerful beasts without weakening.

And So Begins Weeks of Mild Activity

(I’m having trouble with my blog.  The menu bar at the top doesn’t show up, so I won’t always know when notifications appear.  Looks like technical difficulties for today.)

So this week is where everything changes and I’ll be less active for a few weeks.  I’ll be doing promo work and all of the posts are scheduled.  Looks like morning, evening, and however long ‘Frozen’ is will be my computer time.  This is because my wife starts the new job tomorrow, which means I’m solo with the toddler.  I might be waking up before he does in order to get the morning stuff done.  No idea how to get the biking done though because the few times I’ve tried to bike while the toddler was around ended quickly.

I managed to finish the editing of Book 6 with many distractions appearing, so I didn’t get much else done.  The Compass Key is on a few Top 100 lists, which is great.  I’m hoping my inability to do much in the way of marketing doesn’t hurt it too much.  Things may return to normal in September.  I still have 5 books to edit before I step into the next volume of ‘Legends of Windemere’.  3 of those should be rather simple while the other 2 are more intensive.

Not much else to talk about here since I’m gearing up for more toddler time than anything else.  That tends to be library, playgrounds, Frozen, and unpredictability.  I’m now in charge of his breakfast, lunch, dinner, bath, and everything in between.  We have to buy some school supplies too, which might be our adventure on Monday.  With all of his toys, I don’t see why he can’t play in the backyard all day.  He has a swing set, two slides, a trampoline, bubbles, bowling set, and so many things that can entertain him.  Anyway, that’s my focus for now.  I’ll be as social as I can while keeping some work progress going.  I think the rest of this month are Windemere posts taken from questions asked by various readers.

Two more spots for The Compass Key Blog Tour!  August 30th and 31st!

Goals for the week:

  1. Entertain and feed toddler.
  2. Prepare posts for September when time permits.
  3. Edit novels when time permits.
  4. Market books.  Might have to prep Tweets the night before.

So I hope everyone has a fun August.

Ask-A-Character: Yola Biggs the Goddess of Chaos

Picture Unavailable Due to Character Repeatedly Mooning the Camera.  Not what you think.  She kept throwing the moon at the cameraman.

Finishing up the interview week is a lesser villain who will eventually step up to take a more powerful role in events.  This is Yola Biggs who is the exiled Goddess of Chaos.  She’s been hiding with Baron Kernaghan because she broke the Law of Influence and doesn’t want to be sealed.

The few appearances she’s had have proven that she’s rather nuts.  Not villain crazy, but like a child with a bucket of paint and no supervision crazy.  She breaks the laws of physics and reality all the time because she can.  Though she’s more inclined to do it for entertainment than anything malicious.  She’s oddly playful, which makes her an oddity among the ambitious agents of the Baron.  Then again, she does mention dropping baby chaos elves into the ocean to see if they can swim.  She also mentions reviving them after the experiment fails because doesn’t want to make Trinity mad.

Personally, I enjoy writing Yola scenes because I can be silly and it still makes sense.  She has a very short attention span at times while other times she’s hyper-focused.  Things can be taken literally or she can simply not understand.  This is one of the reasons why I was upset when the last two chapters of Book 8 were lost.  They had a lot of good material for Yola that was spontaneous.

So let’s end this interview week with a bang!

Ask-A-Character: Kira Grasdon the Returning Fiancee

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Yes, I know this is probably the third time I’ve put her in the hot seat.  First time was good and second time went relatively unnoticed.  Still, she returns in Legends of Windemere: The Compass Key to reveal that she’s more useful than before.  I won’t go into the details, but Ms. Grasdon gets an action scene to show that she hasn’t been sitting on her butt in high society since she last appeared in Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.  Yeah, it’s been a while and she’s changed.

For those that need a refresher, Kira is Luke Callindor’s fiancee and she comes from a culture where dating multiple partners is promoted.  So it has resulted in him having another relationship with Sari and this is the first time Luke and Kira get to talk about the whole thing.  This conversation has been a long time coming and I couldn’t fit it into Book 3 or 4 since having Kira show up would have made no sense in terms of story.  It also let things go further along where it isn’t as simple a talk as you’d expect, but you’ll have to read the story to find out.

Now Kira is the heiress of a powerful merchant house, but she was also a student at Hamilton Military Academy.  So she can fight and she’s proven to be more cunning than originally thought.  Her weapon is a chain and sickle called a kusari-gama and it comes in handy when fighting the large scorpions found in the desert around Bor’daruk.  We’ll get more into that area in Book 7 . . . mwahaha!

So step up, act respectful, and ask how Kira’s been doing while Luke has been away.

Staring at the Screen, so Forget a Title

He was proud of this

He was proud of this

Got to the zoo a little after opening and closed the park down.  Lions, tigers, bears (grizzly and polar), red pandas, gorillas (including a baby), giraffes, zebras, monkeys, tapirs, flamingos, sea lions, rhinos, deer, and that’s all I can remember him listing off to me as I brought him to the bathroom.  One heart attack happened with him getting his leg stuck in the fence by the zebras.  Ever get panicked to the point where you’re angry, but not sure at what?  That would be this since I was holding him up and letting him go would have made it a lot worse.

Anyway, I’m exhausted and overheated.  I tried looking through my email, but I could barely focus.  This post alone is taking me an hour, so I think I’ll get back to other blogs in the morning.  As usual, I’m sorry if I missed something important.  I’ll sift through to see if there were any calls for blog tours, cover reveals, etc.  The big goal is to finish the editing tomorrow and do the laundry.

One final note.  Here is where The Compass Key stands:

Ask-A-Character: General Vile the Halfling Swordsman

By Kayla Matt (Nimby since I have no Vile pictures)

By Kayla Matt (Nimby since I have no Vile pictures)

This is really becoming a week of predominantly villains because here is another agent of Baron Kernaghan.  Honestly, there’s nothing really vile about General Vile.  He is a halfling warrior with a sense of honor, but he can be cruel if he wants information out of someone.  Even though he’s rather small, Vile proves that he can hold his own against any opponent.

Perhaps his biggest role in the story is that he’s the father and master of Nimby.  How this will play out in the overall story is still a mystery.  I’m not even sure if they’ll come face-to-face yet.  Again, there’s not much else to Vile’s past that gets mentioned in the books because he simply doesn’t feel like sharing.  As honorable as he is in battle, he keeps his past a secret to avoid his allies from using any of it against him.  All I can say before the questions is that he had a profitable career as a thief, mercenary, and assassin.  Always he is an avid collector of magical items.

So ask anything that comes to mind since it isn’t every day you run into an evil halfling swordsman.
