Monsters by Chris McMullen

This critter is ‘donated’ by Chris McMullen.  Check out his blog and books!

Owethor

A bipedal creature that lives within the valleys of the Urykyl Mountains. Its head resembles a pig-nosed bat with insect-like antennae that reaches down to their knees. It is hairless, but stays warm by wearing the pelts of local mammals.  This is accomplished with the help of two foot long claws and a razor-sharp tongue. The Owethor eats the bones, but is incapable of digesting the organs and meat. Females are actually bigger than the males and they move in mating pairs. While the female is stronger, the male has keener senses so he does the tracking while she does the killing.

IndieGo-GO? Here I go!

Help a brand new Indie Author out!

Katie Sullivan's avatarThe D/A Dialogues

indiegogoheader - BLOGSo, I did something I never thought I would be bold enough to do: launch a crowdfunding campaign.

But I did – and it’s live!

There’s even a contribution on it (Thank you, Christopher – and no, this is not the official thank-you).

Through the campaign, you can PRE-ORDER your very own copy of Changelings, and even have it signed or personally inscribed by yours truely (and if you ask nice, I’ll even have D sign it!). There are also a lot of great perks to be had. I think I had the most fun looking for those!

All of this is an effort to expand the distribution for Changelings. I’ve pushed myself to become more active in my local community, and I want to be able to share this with them – with the libraries I love so dearly, with the bookstores and coffee shops – and distribution…

Monsters by John W. Howell

These two creatures are part of the ‘Monster Maker Fun’ week and they were ‘donated’ by John W. Howell.  Check out his blog and his book, ‘MY GRL‘.

Stoupis

A dim-witted creature that resembles a crimson stork with rabbit ears and wings that are on backwards.  They live within the Pronchu Archipelago and stay near the shallows where they’re easy prey for the always hungry Rhunc.  Whenever they fly, they wrap their long neck around their body and go in reverse because of their wings.  This means they never know where they’re going and it’s common for them to crash into the ocean where they drown.  Regardless of their low intelligence, they are not at risk of going extinct.  A Stoupis reaches maturity within 2 days and mates every morning to release a clutch of 20-30 eggs.  These take a week to hatch and their shells can only be broken from the inside.  They also possess very dense and filling meat, so any creature that eats a Stoupis will not be hungry for 4 days.  This is why there is a big market for Stoupis meat and an industry that takes tourists out to kill their own.  Most people simply watch and wait for one of the creatures to get itself killed.

Dalaphenius

A mysterious creature that lives in a body of water at the top of Mount Tikaly, which is a dormant volcano. The lake within the crater is very hot and murky with the stench of sulfur in the air.  Only the Dalaphenius lives there and people are not sure exactly what it looks like.  This beast remains within the lake and people that see its silhouette tend to describe it as a small whale with six tentacles.  It has been discovered that the wavy parts of its body are its ears, eyes, nose, and mouth.  Each part is at the end of a gray tendril that drips with slime that modulates body temperature to keep it at a constant within the dangerous water.  For food, the Dalaphenius eats algae and microscopic organisms by using the sieve-like mouth.  Unlike a whale, this creature does not release the water from a blowhole, so we assume it does it in reverse.  This would explain the muffled boom that can be heard before part of the Dalaphenius breaks the surface.

Fall Into Fantasy Tour: Strings by G. Miki Hayden

Welcome to the Fall Into Fantasy Tour, where we are keeping your mind off any end-of-summer blues and welcoming the cooler weather by introducing you to some incredible fantasy reads to curl up with and giving you plenty of chances to win awesome prizes!

Week 10: Strings by G. Miki Hayden

Robert, an ordinary boy, finds himself in a newly chaotic world. Buildings move when and where they please, and time jumps around according to no known laws of physics. For Robert, getting to his regular school in the morning is next to impossible. As for getting home…

But then, Holden—a boy he and his friend, Nila, meet in a cave—offers them a string. No, not twine, but a string of the kind that forms the universe. Teeny and tiny, and invisible to the naked eye, this string will take Robert and Mila to their homes and way, way beyond…

Accompanied by a memorable cast of characters, Robert and his friends follow the string on a journey across time, space, and dimensions to discover the answer to a mystery: Who has caused the world to fall apart?

Buy it from: Amazon  Barnes & Noble
Or add it on Goodreads

EXCERPT:

Holden stood up, suddenly excited. “Yes, strings, Robert, strings. String theory says we live in a universe of multiple dimensions. Something is happening to the strings that form our everyday world, and now the universes are bleeding over into one another—merging. I have to figure out how to stop it, to separate the worlds again.”

“And we have to figure out how to get home,” Nila cried out. “What a mess everything is.”
The smoke from the small fire had made Robert’s eyes tear.

Focusing on the One

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

The strange thing about Legends of Windemere is that it’s an ensemble cast, but seemed to start as a one man show.  At least this is how some people have seen it.  Luke Callindor is repeatedly pointed at as the main character.  Yet, he has kind of been in more of a supporting role or sharing the spotlight for the last 2 books.  This has given the other heroes chances to shine and, in some cases, overshadow the young warrior.  Personally, I don’t see this as a bad thing because a long series needs a cast of characters to work with instead of one.  For example, Book 8 and 9 focus on some characters that haven’t had many chances to shine.  This means Luke will slip back into the ranks again.

Not with Curse of the Dark Wind.  The next book in the series is focused on Luke Callindor and a major step in his growth as a hero.  Something about him will change after this and even his relationships might be subtly altered.  I feel like I’m going back to Beginning of a Hero in the way that all the other characters have either subplots, moments to shine, or simply there to work within the events that focus on Luke.  This isn’t to say they’re going to be dull and unimportant since there are still some subplots showing up here.  Nyx still has issues with what happened at the end of The Compass Key and Delvin is developing something.  Fizzle takes a secondary role to Luke here while Sari has the ongoing romantic plotline to contend with.  That’s more of a Book 7 thing.

Anyway, I wonder how people will take to this.  Is it okay to take a book in a long series to devote to one character’s development after having a few that cleanly divided attention between the cast?  I will admit that what happens to Luke involves everyone, so it isn’t like they’re being jerked to the side.  It’s just that this is really his tale and comes off as a culmination of everything he has gone through to this point.  Maybe I’m just having doubts after a rough week.

(Especially since my laptop nearly died again this morning.)

Path to Halloween

First some highlights of last week and next week:

Now for the rest of life . . . I think we’re at the point where me saying that I’m NOT exhausted is news.  With the temporary situation, I’m handling the cooking, cleaning, kid, and everything else along with the writing and editing.  Thankfully, I’m through the more challenging books and I’ll have the next one edited by Halloween if not earlier.  Then I’ll step away to edit Curse of the Dark Wind another time to make sure I have the continuity ready.  It shouldn’t be very difficult since it’s shorter than the others.  Maybe I’ll post about it later today since it brings up an interesting question.

Come to think of it.  I don’t have much to talk about.  It’s been a real slog ever since the interview since I’m trying to maintain so much.  I guess you know it’s bad when I fall asleep on one of my notebooks and it’s the afternoon.  I have been going hard for months now, so maybe getting to sleep in and relax tomorrow will help.  I know next Saturday will be a early morning, silence, and late night period for me.  In other words, I’ll be away and won’t be heard from until Sunday.  This is dependent on me keeping my health and energy up.  Man, I’m out of steam already here.  I also keep feeling like another bout of the blues is trying to hit me.  Seems to happen whenever I’m put under stress and can’t seem to find a way out.

AIM, READY, GOALS!

  1. Finish doing a quick read of The Compass Key to lock in continuity and see if I can catch any typos.
  2. Start Curse of the Dark Wind final edit if possible.
  3. Cook dinner every night.
  4. Take son Trick or Treating and prepare candy for Halloween.
  5. Review a few book ideas.
  6. Do biking every morning.
  7. Work a little bit more on Yola story and Bounty Hunter.

Addendum: I’ve been wondering about sharing W.I.P.’s on here.  I have a few scheduled for November, but I’ve run into problems when I do this.  Mostly people seem to think I’m going to do the story right away and I fear it’s causing confusion.  Also, I don’t get much of a reaction from these posts and they kind of require feedback.  So, my future projects might remain in the shadows until it’s they’re time.  The more I think about it, the more I realize that the content of my blog is going to be chopped down once January hits.  The character interviews, W.I.P., and other posts will be eliminated or minimized.  A lot of Legends of Windemere stuff will suffer the same fate until it gets close to a release.  I should probably sit down and figure out what that leaves me with.  Poetry, goal posts, skits, and stories about myself?  I’ll have another 2 months to figure this out.  I already have my first ‘Personal Post’ ready.  😀

Shadow People – Cover Reveals

jorobinson176's avatarJo Robinson

I must say a VERY big thank you to my wonderful sci-fi cover designer. Even though he has read the first book in the series, Chris has only had a few bits revealed to him as to the content of the upcoming books – scribblers are notoriously reticent when it comes to spoilers. And yet he has come up with the perfect covers for the next three books in the series. So – hail to Chris Graham and all those artists who can see into our dreams and interpret them in the real world. Kudos! I can’t wait to see what he does with the final eleven.

I don’t think that a series is something that you write one book at a time, and just guess at what comes next. I have the entire plot for Shadow People planned right till the end, and most of the books already have…
