Author Comforts: Music to Banish the Quiet

Many authors need quiet to get work done.  I’m not one of those.  I need some type of noise, but one that I can control.  I can mute my laptop whenever I need to focus more.  I can’t do that to other people no matter how hard I hit the remote button or how many things I throw.  This has been an issue since my childhood.  There’s always been a problem with people talking to me while I’m writing.  It goes like this:

  1. I’m writing on laptop or in notebook.  Focused on my thoughts.
  2. Someone walks up talking as if I’m just sitting there waiting for attention.
  3. I give a look or say ‘working’.
  4. They apologize and either go away or keep talking.
  5. Both situations result in me getting a little derailed.

This is if I’m even the target of the conversation.  When my wife and dad were around the house and I was working in the dining room, they had conversations in the same room.  It was like people were gravitating toward me even if I wasn’t involved.  So the music acts as a deterrent since it makes it hard for people to talk around me or to me.  They need to get through Weird Al, Tantric, Theory of a Deadman, Linkin Park, Queen, Seether, Shinedown, Disturbed, Black Sabbath, and whatever else has crept onto my Pandora station.  The downside here is that things seem to just pop up after a week because they’re connecting to something else.  So it isn’t a perfect system.  Also I don’t always realize when Pandora has stopped to ask if I’m still there, which gives people an opening.

So, is there anything you do that goes against the ‘majority’ of authors?

Author Comforts: Finish a Section and Take a Break

Dr. Evil Meme

Dr. Evil Meme

I used to be able to write nonstop for hours.  Then my fingers got old, my mind got wander-y, and my energy simply didn’t hold up like it used to.  I’m not talking about the brief moment where you flex the fingers or have to make a mad dash to the bathroom because your bladder has had enough with ‘one more paragraph’.  (And people wonder why I don’t work outside of the house.)  I’m talking about a point where you can pause and let your mind gather itself for another marathon.  This could be a chapter, chapter section, or anything that has an end to it.

I do a 10-15 minute break between chapter sections when writing and sometimes when editing.  With editing, I try to push to the end of a chapter before I take a break.  It really depends on how long it’s taking.  The challenge is that I know it’s a bad idea to toss on a TV show since those typically run 30-60 minutes.  That’s if I stop at one.  So, where do I go to relax?

YOUTUBE

I’m betting you guys thought I was lying about that on Monday.  There are a handful of video series that I just grab random episodes from to relax and get a good laugh.  I never get bored of these things for some reason:

  1. Zero Punctuation–  These are highly entertaining video game reviews that I must have watched 2-3 times each.
  2. Jimquisition– I watch this through The Escapist and it’s about video game opinions, news . . . whatever.  I fell out of gaming a while ago, so these two sites tend to keep me somewhat knowledgeable of what’s happening.
  3. Honest Trailers–  This is a fairly new one to me and it basically makes fun of movies.
  4. Warp Zone–  I just like the skits and music videos these guys do . . . which is pretty much everything.

So I just randomly group a few of those videos to watch while I relax and think about the next section I have to write/edit.  Do you do anything like this or is straight writing until slumber?

Author Comforts: Remember to Hydrate

Polar Seltzer

Polar Seltzer

I always forget to grab something to drink while I’m writing.  It wasn’t always this way, but I think it stems from me cutting caffeinated or sweet sodas out of my life.  Not completely since I indulge maybe 1-2 times a week.  Still there is rarely any Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, 7UP, or Sprite in the house.

Instead, I indulge in seltzer and I’ve hooked into Polar more than any other brand.  By indulge, I mean I treat these things like water bottles.  I toss one in the fridge at night, grab it about midmorning, toss another in, and chug away whenever I remember.  I tend to forget because I’m caught up in my writing.  Also the only place to put it while I work in my room is out of reach on the dresser.  I tried to floor once and kept knocking the bottle over, which lead to explosions.

Funny thing about seltzer is that a new bottle will explode even if you haven’t shaken it up, so always open carefully.

I have a list of favorite flavors, which changes when seasonal stuff shows up.  Currently, Champagne Strawberry is on the shelf.  Though I’m big into the Granny Smith Apple and Vanilla Pear flavors right now.  There’s an Irish Coffee and a Blackberry Bergamot that I have to try.  Should be interesting, but that’s my drinking vice.  I’ll be sucking them down a lot more often when it gets into winter and the room they’re stored in is cold enough to double as a fridge.

Anybody have a favorite trick that they have while writing or to celebrate a milestone?  I sense a lot of love for margaritas coming.  😉

Firstly, I’d like to find out if any of you guys would be willing to host me for a launch tour for my next book release towards the end of December this year. I would email everything to you, and all you’d have to do would be to copy and paste. Anyone who hosts me would get Mobi copies of all my books, including the new release, just in case you don’t already have enough books, with absolutely no expectation that you read any of them. I’ll add a Contact Me page below for if you’d like to so I can get your email address.

Secondly, the very book I’m talking about is sometimes quite painful to work on, and I occasionally get myself well wound up and in need of an internet fix to get out of the zone. So earlier on I did just that and had a…

Blog Tour: Changelings by Katie Sullivan

Changelingscover Changelings. They were the descendants of Man and Fae. They walked between worlds – as healers, mystics, even kings – but no more. He thought he was the last, alone and lost, until the day he saw them.

Irish teens Maureen O’Malley and Sean McAndrew are lost in time. To find a way home, they must curry favor with pirates, dodge a revolution, and defy a king out of Ireland’s deepest legends.

They are Changelings, and they have magic in their blood – magic, which will rekindle a centuries-old war that threatens to tear the very fabric of time.

.

Pirates and rebels and myths, oh my!

Chapter One

I sat in the grove of my own creation and stared out at a world and a people descended of mine own. As I watched, trees gave way to stone and the Many lost their claim to the priests of the One.

Then the wheel turned. The sacred trees grew around my effigy of stone and the Many came out of hiding. I sat in my grove and watched a world outside my imagination, willing it to see.

She saw. She saw me with uncanny green eyes – the green eyes of my mother and her mother before her: witch’s eyes.

Joy rose in me. It was time – time to join the world after years of solitude, time to act after centuries of stillness.

I closed my eyes and reached across the barrier, to touch my future and my past…

Descended of pirates and revolutionaries, Katie Sullivan is a lover and student of all things Irish. Born in the States, she is a dual US/Irish citizen, and studied history and politics at University College, Dublin – although, at the time, she seriously considered switching to law, if only so she could attend lectures at the castle on campus. She can be found writing with said character weekly at her blog, The D/A Dialogues.

Author Comforts: Snackage!

Twizzlers!

Twizzlers!

There really isn’t anything deep about this.  Each of us has a favored snack or food that we gravitate toward without thinking about it.  They’re that treat we love that brings mental and emotional comfort.  A food that we never seem to get tired of.

Most people here are probably expecting me to mention pizza, but the truth is that you can’t have a box of pizza next to you while writing.  It’s greasy, makes a mess, and you’re really going to pay for eating the entire thing.  That’s not a good author comfort food in my mind.  That’s just personal preference.

My favorite snack when writing are Twizzlers.  Only problem is that they never last long around me.  I’ve devoured a family pack in a day and a half without even realizing it.  That was on a weekend too, so it never made it to the writing time.  I just like being able to grab a handful of straws, pop the end of one in my mouth, and eat away while my hands are working on something.  Yes, I’ve also used a Twizzler as a straw with minor success because it breaks apart in soda.  That and I eat it quickly.

So, do you have a comfort food when writing?

Author Comforts: A Schedule to Keep Me Sane

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

This week I’m going to open the door to a few the things I use to get me through a project . . . week . . . day?  These are mostly going to be discussion-like posts since these things are different for every author.

Here is a tentative schedule of my day since I’ve seen a few and felt like that’s the best place to start:

5:59 AM-  Wake up before the 6 AM alarm to grumble and prepare to kick deep sleeping wife out of bed.

6 AM-  Heave ho, woman!

6:01-6:45 AM-  Check weather, prep son’s lunch for school, bathroom, and do email/blog/sales check.

6:46-7:30 AM-  Get son dressed, fed, and move all of his Thomas trains downstairs for him to play with while waiting for the bus.  He helps get paper, make grandma coffee, and mix his chocolate milk.

7:30-8:15 AM-  Son on bus and time to finish email/blog/sales.  Where the hell did these 20 other emails come from?!

8:16 AM-  Check into work out clothes.  Get distracted by text, FB message, or email.

9-10 AM-  Bike, shower, grab breakfast, and head out for errands if need be.  (Going to assume I don’t have any.)

10:01 AM-12:30 PM-  Write, outlining, and handling social media while be routinely distracted by a variety of things.  Always ends with cursing that I didn’t get as much done as I expected.

12:31 PM-  One more Youtube video, I swear!

12:32-1 PM- Make, bring in, or reheat something for lunch.  Consider working while eating, but figure I need the mental break.  Back to YouTube.

1:01-3:30 PM-  Back to wri . . . phone call . . . now back to . . . where did all these emails come from? . . . back to w . . . that’s a lot of WordPress comments . . . when was the last time I went to the bathroom? . . . got a page done! . . . THE BUS!!!!!

3:31-3:40 PM-  Unpack son’s backpack to read forms from school and notes from teacher.  Clean out his lunch bag and put snacks in for the next day.  Write part of note back to teacher if response is needed.

3:41-4 PM-  Homework for son.  Difficulty varies.

4:01-5 PM-  Set little guy up with dinner and his YouTube videos.  Check email, prep tweets for on Hootsuite, handle comments, and possibly do writing.  More than likely, I will be called to computer room every 5 minutes because he wants a different video and he hasn’t figured out the search function.  Also may be called in for snacks and drinks.  One fight about if he needs to go potty.

5:01-6 PM- Wrangle little guy off computer and play with him.  Make dinner if I’m the one cooking for the day.  Sometimes he sends me back to my laptop.  Usually it’s just sitting and playing.

6:01-6:30 PM-  Potty, tooth brushing, and shower time for son.

6:31-7 PM-  Night time YouTube videos.

7:01-whenever PM-  Hand son off to wife, go back to room, handle emails/comments/Facebook messages, and get some writing done.  Maybe watch Daily Show.

That’s pretty much the average day.
