Week 14: The Bound Trilogy

Book One: Bound

By Kate Sparkes

Welcome to Darmid, where magic is a sin, fairy tales are contraband, and the people live in fear of the Sorcerers on the other side of the mountains.

Rowan Greenwood has everything she’s supposed to want from life—a good family, a bright future, and a proposal from a handsome and wealthy magic hunter. She knows she should be content with what she has. If only she could banish the idea that there’s more to life than marriage and children, or let go of the fascination with magic she’s been forced to suppress since childhood.

When Rowan unknowingly saves the life of one of her people’s most feared enemies, that simple act of compassion rips her from her sheltered life and throws her into a world of magic that’s more beautiful, more seductive, and more dangerous than she ever could have imagined.

Rowan might get everything she ever dreamed of—that is, if the one thing she’s always wanted doesn’t kill her first.

ABOUT KATE SPARKES

Kate Sparkes was born in Hamilton, Ontario, but now resides in Newfoundland, where she tries not to talk too much about the dragons she sees in the fog. She lives with a Mountie, two kids who take turns playing Jeckyll and Hyde, three cats with more personality than most people she meets, and the saddest-looking dog on the planet. Depression has almost consumed her more times than she likes to admit, but writing Fantasy (be it epic or urban, fairy tales or superhero cat stories) keeps her afloat… most of the time. She released her debut novel Bound (Ya Fantasy) in June 2014. The second book in the trilogy is due out in the winter.

Book Launch: Desert Star by Lisette Brodey

Nicholas C. Rossis's avatarNicholas C. Rossis

Lisette Brodey is one of the new friends I’ve made since embarking on my Indie journey. She has written five novels and today she’s launching Desert Star, a YA paranormal mystery that deals with sensitive issues like bullying and sexual preferences. This is the second book in her paranormal trilogy, The Desert Series. Enjoy!

Desert Star

From the blog of Nicholas C. Rossis, author of science fiction, the Pearseus epic fantasy series and children's booksLarsen Davis isn’t afraid to stand up to those who bully him, but in a two-against-one situation at Mystekal High, it’s never easy. When classmate River Dalworth witnesses the abuse and intervenes, the two seniors become good friends. Larsen explains that he’s fighting another battle at home: his own mother, Raylene, bullies him for being gay.

When Larsen meets River’s mother, Arielle, and learns she is overseeing the renovation of the Desert Theater, he shares his dream for a career on stage. Soon, Arielle offers Larsen a job as her assistant, but Raylene…

Future Happy Turkey Devouring Day!

First, a whoopie cushion has been introduced to the house.  So there will be breaks to blow that up and stick it under the 5-year-old’s shirt.  Then he either squishes it or belly bumps the wall for the funny noise.

Second, this week will have the results of that poll I did back for the favorite characters.  Each day will have an excerpt with one of the winners.  In other words, spoilers may appear in the posts.

Third, I’ve been getting a lot of Twitter activity by retweeting other authors.  I stopped posting personal stuff there because I’m not witty or interesting when I only have 140 characters to work with.  I am trying to figure a few things out though.  I try for a tweet every 3-4 hours give or take and I switch up the books some days.  Yet, I tried one day of a tweet every 2 hours and that created a lot of activity.  Not sure if I should make that a weekly thing where I pick a day to do it again.  Does it equal sales?  A few, but the networking is what I’m aiming for now.

Yeah . . . nothing happened this week.  I edited, I cared for son, I cooked dinners, I ate food, I believe I slept, and the Internet acted up on the one day I put aside to get extra editing done.  You might wonder why that last one disrupted editing.  Well, I spent a bunch of time trying to fix it and then lamenting the loss of Pandora when I felt I needed it most.  Like I said, not much happened this week and I’m not really sure what else to say about it.

Actually, there was one BIG thing.  I have another podcast interview coming up on Eat, Sleep, Write.  It’s a fun chat about fantasy world creation.  I’ll make a post as soon as it goes live, so I hope to hear what people think.

This week is going to be brief because of Thanksgiving.  My goal is to get Book 7 edited before the holiday since I’m doing a bunch of the cooking.  After Thanksgiving, I plan on editing Book 8 before the 2 week Christmas Recess.  This clears 2015 for writing new stuff since those 2 weeks will be hectic.  Hopefully I’ll have ‘Curse of the Dark Wind’ released by then, but we’ll see what happens.  Things are moving, but this time of year seems to be chaotic for everyone.  Guess a plus side is that nobody is really bugging me about releasing the book this time.  So either people are patient, people realize that I do tentative deadlines, or nobody cares.  Either way, the book will be released as soon as the editing and cover art are done.

Goals for the week:

  1. Finish editing Book 7.  Less than 100 pages to go.
  2. Read more of Ranger’s Apprentice: Emperor of Nihon-Ja.
  3. Fiddle with ‘Project Phoenix’ and ‘Sutyra’.
  4. Bike, eat, and sleep.
  5. Watch ‘The Lego Movie’ with son.
  6. Present shopping for an upcoming birthday.
  7. Avoid Black Friday.
  8. Maybe start editing Book 8.  Just discovered that it’s actually about 30 pages shorter than ‘Curse of the Dark Wind’.  Kind of concerned about that considering all that happens in there.  It’s a pure character development book that sets things up for the next one, but I thought there was more meat to it.  Then again, this is also the book that lost 3 chapters to the dead hard drive, so I might find that I rushed through the ending out of frustration.  I do remember some of it got streamlined.

Character Origins: Raksha and Melanie

Cheshire Cat from American McGee's Alice

Cheshire Cat from American McGee’s Alice

I guess I’ll scream SPOILERS here even though these characters are so minor that Sari’s skirts and Nyx’s eyes are more essential to the story.  People might know Raksha from Book 5 and Melanie debuts in Book 6.  That’s all I’m saying before I make the ‘Read More’ break.  Again, these two are extreme background:

Pressurized

The Simpsons

The Simpsons

Yeah . . . I don’t have one of those since I’m still ‘working’.  Anyway, I had an urge to post spontaneously and then things happened.  Now I’m not sure what I was going to write about.  I’ve already pushed back the scheduled post to this afternoon and I’m too ‘blah’ to change it.

I’m starting to realize that constant stress and pressure ends with me feeling really depressed by the weekend.  Just don’t want to be around people and any amount of cheer is kind of forced.  Not sleeping well either, but I think we’ve established that a good night’s sleep for me involves either a coma or death.

It just seems like I’m drowning in a funk that I can’t get out of and I’m at the point where writing about it is the only thing I can think of doing.  This never goes well though because people don’t know what to do with someone who is feeling depressed without an actual target.  We seem to think depressed and sad are the same thing because people have been using them interchangeably for a long time.  Well, they’re different and that will probably be a long post I do at some point after more thought on the matter.  It’s too big and delicate a topic to ramble into here.  All I will say is that the ‘suck it, cupcake’ style comments I typically get when I’m in this mood is not helpful.  These tend to make me either feel worse or want to take how many whacks it takes with a toaster oven to drive a person into unconsciousness.  FYI-  It’s one with a microwave, but only if you take a running start.

One thing that might have me off is the editing and I’m starting to feel like I’m kind of alone here.  I don’t know why.  Maybe it’s that I have nobody to bounce ideas off of because everyone is scared of spoilers.  Maybe I feel rushed or struggling to write in an environment rife with distractions.  Maybe I’ve come so far in the series that I’m in foreign territory.  I mean, I don’t have to do big descriptions of the established characters any more.  By the 6th book, you should know Timoran Wrath is a towering barbarian with red hair and Nyx is a slender half-elf with a love of fire magic.  Their relationships have been established too, so there’s no more ‘get to know you’ scenes.

I’m editing the 7th book right now and it’s definitely got shorter sections and gets more to the point.  And that might be part of the issue.  I keep wondering if there’s a scene missing in here even though everything is tight.  I remember how I added a scene to Allure of the Gypsies after 2 years of reading over it.  I had a sense that something was missing, but this isn’t the same.  Information is gathered and events occur ‘off camera’ here because they weren’t really long to begin with.  I can think of one scene that I might want to add, but I don’t know if I should.  Basically, the Luke/Kira/Sari stuff takes a turn now that all three are in the same place for once.  Yet, I seem to focus more on Sari and the Luke/Kira interactions are talked about after the fact.  Maybe a reason for this is because it’s normal couple stuff with subtle hints that something is off.  Do people really need to see them eat together or making out in bed?  The overall plot doesn’t really open itself up to them doing real couple things either.

I don’t know.  I’m feeling out of it, alone, and coming to some limit.  And I’ve apparently been chosen to take my son to a friend’s birthday party.  Guess I’ll edit and do laundry later.

Help me help Good Hope

gillswriting's avatarGillswriting

Today I must ask for help where from wherever it is possible. Today I ask for personal sponsorship of my time in Tanzania, the organisation and its team.  Help me help Good Hope, any help, anyone is able to give will be appreciated beyond words, no level of help is too small.

Living in a world of fairy tales depicts a soft edge to a harsh and brutal social structure. The imagery of the Poverty Dragon fictionalises the reality of the real truth of hungry stomachs and malnourished kids walking to school without any food in their belly, many without even a hot sweet mug of chai before they leave.

But I choose to believe in the fairy tale, because I choose to believe that good overcomes bad, it may take the knights many battles, they may have to travel far to find the magic talisman but they are…

Final day for the Occasional Soulmates 99 cent countdown deal!

Kevin Brennan's avatarWHAT THE HELL

Blue gorilla

That’s right. If you’ve been fence-sitting on this thing, today’s the day you have to act. Occasional Soulmates is 99 cents until midnight PST.

It’s been a successful promotion, but only thanks to EReader News Today. On its own, a Kindle Countdown Deal doesn’t attract much attention, it seems to me; you need an outside push to ensure that lots of eyeballs see it. Luckily ENT isn’t terribly expensive, like a lot of them, but it’s effective.

To ignite one last flash of interest, I’m reposting here Cinthia Ritchie’s interview with me earlier this week on her blog. Hope you like it. Tell your friends. And, as always, thanks for your support on social media throughout this promotion.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for Occasional Soulmates? Did it pop inside your head suddenly or was it a slow tease?

A: It was a pretty…
