End of an Era Revisit: Faith in the .99 Cent eBook
April 2013 was a really good month for my blog. Though I have no idea where any of these old pics have gone to. Maybe I should read these again.
I’ve pondered my pricing for a long time. I did research long before I started formatting my novels for Amazon. One thing kept turning up. The same phrase again and again from people. At one point this phrase was even uttered to me:
“A .99 cent eBook means the author has no faith in the book.”
Well . . . that’s an interesting insight into the mind of the aspiring author. To think that someone brave enough to put his or her heart out into the ether would have no faith in what they’re doing. Personally, I find the sentiment rather cruel and belligerent to those that are trying to grab their personal brass ring. You know what? Screw the brass ring because this ring is pure gold.
So, why did I go the .99 cent route with my first novel? Simple. Contrary to my panic attacks, I do have the utmost faith in my writing. Sure, I write in present tense third person, which is about as popular as appendicitis. Yet, I still believe that my books are worth reading. They are entertaining stories with characters that I busted my fingers to bring depth too. If I choose to put my first book out for .99 cents then you better believe there is something else to it than low self-esteem. I have faith in my .99 cent eBook.
I don’t have faith in your average reader wanting to take a chance on an unknown author for anything more than a dollar. Keep in mind that I tried to battle through the rejection letters to no avail. I went vanity press and got crucified by high prices. I’ve taken my lumps and have learned that many people will not venture into a new author’s world without a little incentive. That incentive is the .99 cent price tag. For a dollar, you can take a chance on my book with less apprehension. For a dollar, you can find yourself loving a new author at the beginning of his career. For a dollar, you can be one of the first to enter a new world of magic. You know all those people who love to say ‘I was listening to that band before they were popular’ or ‘I loved that actress before she became A-list’? Well, you can take that risk and proudly claim that you read an author’s work before they hit the Times Best-Seller list.
Was I a little over the top? Definitely, but my point is that you never know what you’re getting with a new author. People are leery of such things, especially with news of there being more crap than good books. That .99 cent price tag eases the worry for a lot of people when they approach a new author. .99 cents doesn’t feel like a real risk. You can’t even get gum for that these days. So, do you feel better taking a chance on a new author for less than a pack of gum? Sounds a little more palpable to me.
This idea that the author doesn’t have faith in the book and priced it less is rather insulting if you think about it. At least to those of us that are doing this to help develop what we really need at the beginning. Personally, I’m not in it for the money right now. The money will come when I get the real power behind an author’s success: Fans. That has been my goal all along here. I want to make my book appealing to as many people as I can and gain a sturdy fan following, so I can price future books reasonably higher. That .99 cent book is an introduction to me, my style, and my world. It is the gateway into the literary amusement park I’ve constructed for those that wish to enter. Honestly, it sounds like good business to get people in the door. Come for the .99 cent introduction to a series and stay for the higher priced sequels.
Now after all that, does anyone really believe I did .99 cents due to a lack of faith in my own book? I didn’t think so.

Notes and the Future
So a few things before I’m dragged away by the little guy. Friendly’s closed early on Christmas Eve and we didn’t make it. So I promised to treat him to a father/son lunch today. Apparently that still doesn’t earn me any writing time and the kid has given up on movies. The notes:
- I can’t make posts from the WordPress app. Dang it.
- The Twitter app does not acknowledged ‘Pinned Posts’. If you keep a post pinned and do a lot of retweet then anyone on their phone has to scroll through the new stuff to get to the one non-retweet.
- Writing during the summer and any breaks does not look possible. At least getting anything more than a chapter section here and there at night. Even when someone is around to watch the little guy, I have to take the morning shift and that leaves me with an afternoon of catch up. There’s also the fact that the lack of a working area leaves me defenseless if the son escapes his handlers and goes in search of me. It seems to happen a lot.
- The new book is selling very well, but the ranking is plummeting. Looks like #33 on the Fantasy Action Adventure will be the highest point. I have no idea why this is, but I’m guessing it’s because other books are selling more than me. So I’m doing very well, but not in comparison to Game of Thrones, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Princess Bride, etc. I’m still scratching my head at a bunch of sci-fi sitting on the fantasy lists, but there’s fantasy on the sci-fi lists too. Guess that makes things even.
- Looking forward to a day away from the computer tomorrow. Just the morning and evening, but I might just settle in for writing once the big event is over.
- Book 9 is looking to clear out a lot of character conflicts, so I’m seeing a lot of arguments cropping up in the beginning. It’s odd that every 3rd book I write tends to focus more on character evolution and relationships. Happened with ‘Allure of the Gypsies‘ and ‘Curse of the Dark Wind‘.
Hope everyone had a fun holiday and are gearing up for an exciting end to 2014.

End of an Era Revisit: Feeling Down and Irritable
Odd that this one is on the list and turns up today. It’s another in April of 2013, which was soon after I started publishing. It was also before I locked in pictures as part of my posts and when there was a lot more activity here. Putting a picture in to divide new from old:
Sundays have become infamous for low (or no) sales days for my book. Not sure why, but today is looking like it will knock off all those Amazon lists completely. I’ve been preparing myself for this and trying to find a way to soften the blow. I was doing okay until a thought crossed my mind:
I’ve seen a lot of self-published authors talk about how important ‘word of mouth’ is and I’ve preached it too. I use social media, support other authors, and do whatever I can to spread the word of my book and the books of other authors. I greatly appreciate the hep and advice I’ve received from all of the WordPress friends that I’ve made. Yet, there is a piece of my puzzle that’s lacking and it’s finally hitting a point where I’m annoyed.
Back when I set out to be an author full-time, I announced it to my friends and stated that ‘word of mouth’ would be essential. I told them that I would need their help and they eagerly agreed to do whatever it took to help me. So far, only 2 people have really stuck by this. Everyone else has either ignored me, bought the book without reading it, or hit that damn ‘like’ button on FB. Honestly, the ‘like’ button isn’t really a form of support for something like this. It’s just a well-wish and doesn’t tell all your friends about my book. It’s an action with no ripple.
Now, I made a small plea on my FB today and asked that people simply share my post about my book. One person did it and it’s one of the usual suspects, so I wasn’t surprised by that. I still thanked her for her unending help. Truthfully, I’m not annoyed at the people who are actually helping and they know who they are. It’s the ones that I thought had my back, but are apparently too busy to share an FB post. I’m ranting again, but you get the gist of what I’m feeling. Here are some private responses to my plea:
“You should stand on your own two feet and earn your success by yourself.” (Nobody really succeeds by themselves. Eventually, you need somebody to spread the word of your product or it won’t go anywhere.)
“I don’t read fantasy books.” (I didn’t ask for you to read it. Just hit the damn share button for a friend.)
“I don’t think I’d be much help.” (You couldn’t be much less help now.)
“You should stop this and get a real job.” (Good to see you’re in my corner. I’ll remember this when you ask for a favor.)
“My friends don’t listen to me on FB.” (Congratulations! Mine don’t listen either, but you have over 300 ‘friends’. I figure even two of them sharing that will help.)
“You can’t depend on anybody.” (That’s rather severe. Especially since you’ve depended on me for help and I’ve delivered.)
“Why do you keep asking people to spread the word of your book?” (Because going door-to-door with a staple gun and homemade bookmarks is illegal.)
“Here’s something with kittens to make you feel better.” (Great. Thanks. Virtual cats. How was sending this to me easier than hitting the share button?)
“Stop whining!” (Stop posting about what you ate.)
“You wrote a book?” (We’ve met in real life. I’ve been carrying a notebook and talking about being an author since high school. Should I assume you were ignoring me all these years? Do you translate everything I say to ‘boobies boobies boobies beer cake boobies guns’?)
That’s the real-life support that I have today. My family and I are going to a craft fair, but I might stay behind because I’m just too down. My wife seems to be a better saleswoman anyway. She’s handed out my business cards while doing temp jobs if she hears someone likes fantasy. If I go then I might be the toddler wrangler and let my wife do the work. After all, she’s got the cute sexy thing going while I’ve got the hefty sad thing going.
Thanks for letting me rant here. Needed to finally get that off my chest.

Echoes of Narcissus in the Gardens of Delight is LIVE!
Donna thought there was something wrong with her. That she was suffering from a mental illness that has caused her husband to despise her, distance himself from her, and cheat on her. She blames herself for the desolate, miserable thing that is her marriage and her life. Then she comes across a book that will change everything for her, and reading it, she discovers that there’s nothing wrong with her mind at all, but that there is something very wrong with her husband instead. Marco, she realises, is a malignant narcissist. A text book case. He has a real and documented mental disorder, and that he’s been controlling, manipulating, and abusing her for decades. The sudden full knowledge of all that he’s purposely done to her enrages her. Not sure how to leave after thirty years of what she finally knows has been intentional mental and emotional abuse from him, and believing that she has nowhere to turn, being so physically isolated, she bides her time.
Then she meets and befriends a group of unusual people who share her passion for gardening, and so begins her journey to escape. She joins her new friends in their project to assist elderly people in old age homes care for their small gardens, as well as secretly supplying those suffering from painful and terminal illnesses with medicinal herb and plant remedies, including illegal plants such as cannabis. As weeks go by, she delves into her memories, relearns what it is to be respected, liked, and loved again, and slowly she formulates a plan to safely leave her dangerous husband. But unbeknownst to Donna, Marco is in serious trouble, and has desperate plans of his own, and absolutely no regard for her safety.
** This is a work of fiction, but malignant narcissists really do exist, and it is a recognised mental illness. Unfortunately, many people never realise that they are involved with a narcissist, because their actions are so demonically bad as to be unimaginable and unbelievable, and so they spend their lives in misery, depression, fear, and isolation. If only by the accidental reading of a fictional story, I hope that this book will help even one person, unknowingly suffering narcissistic abuse, to realise that they don’t have to, and that it’s never too late to start over, be happy, be fulfilled, to love and care for yourself, and be truly loved and respected by others.

End of an Era Revisit: Fairy Tale Rewriting Vs Fan Fiction
This one is from September 2013. You wouldn’t believe how many of my old posts lost their pictures, especially those that were picture only. Yikes.
A question came to mind from a comment made. Fan fiction is an odd area because it’s really a bunch of people writing stories with an established person’s world and characters. It’s a safe area for the most part since money isn’t being made by the fan fiction writers for these stories. It is still strange to me when compared to other types of writing. I know I’ll anger fan fiction writers, but I’m trying not to say what they do sucks or is worthless. There are fan fiction authors that capture the characters and write good stories. That does take a lot of skill. Unfortunately, there are more that do it simply to get the ending or hookups they want. Read some Avatar: The Last Airbender and you’ll see some insane stuff. The same can be said for indie authors with many that churn out quick slop and others that put hard work into their self-published novels. Sadly, the terrible tends to get more attention than the talented in both fields.
Now, there was a comment made that was confused about a retelling of Alice in Wonderland. I was curious about the difference between a fairy tale retelling and fan fiction, so I asked Ionia the Wise. She said “Fan fiction is based on characters and fairy tale retellings are based on story that does not hold exact copyright.” That’s when the term ‘Public Domain’ clicked in my head. For those that don’t know, Public Domain is the term for artistic creations that are free for the public to use. These are characters, stories, and worlds that have been around so long that they are no longer covered by copyrights or the families of the creator never renewed the copyright. Look at the comic book series ‘Fables’ and you’ll see how many fairy tales and old stories are Public Domain. Everything from Grimm to Arabian Nights to Jungle Book are fair game. I’ve heard that there are some disputes of Conan the Barbarian and Tarzan too, so you always have to make sure you are retelling a Public Domain story. This is why you can get so many Alice in Wonderland remakes and you still have hoops to jump through for The Hobbit.
Fan fiction tends to work differently in that it uses characters and worlds that are still under copyright. Even when it uses a Public Domain character, it tends to be a version of that character from a retelling. For example, fan fiction that involves Alice and Mad Hatter from the Tim Burton version. That isn’t really a retelling because there is no change to the characters from that specific movie. Again, this is fine and oddly flattering as long as the fan fiction author doesn’t try to make money off it. I think that’s the line for it and why fan fiction is so widespread. It’s a hobby for many and a way to flex their creative muscles. I will admit that I have trouble talking shop with a fan fic writer because the discussion of designing characters tends to be iffy. Seriously, I’ve had some rough conversations with people who have openly asked why I don’t simply take characters directly from Lord of the Rings and change their names. Yes, it has been suggested that I blatantly steal from preexisting works.
So, what’s your opinion on retellings of Public Domain stories and fan fiction?
