Origin of Cassidy

Ripley from Aliens & Sarah Connor from Terminator

Ripley from Aliens & Sarah Connor from Terminator

Cassidy has very little influence beyond ‘tough young woman with guns and a penchant for cursing’.  At one point I imagined here betraying her allies because she has no use for them, but that quickly died off.  So really I had a lot of trouble giving her depth beyond their goal and action scenes.  She’s the one with the guns, has a knack for explosives, a big desire to survive, and rather tame in personality.  Part of this is because she’s standing next to Lloyd and has to play straight man to his insanity.  This is where her ‘Shut the f$*% up, Lloyd’ catchphrase comes from.  So, what can I say about Cassidy?

I want her to show that she is fully capable of defending herself and still has room to grow as a character.  She spends Crossing Bedlam under her mother’s shadow and it’s hinted that she might have spent a lot of time shielded from the worst.  Yet she’s still pretty broken in terms of not getting attached to others and having no qualms about killing an enemy.  There’s a scene where she has to face a biker gang in a fast food restaurant that really demonstrates that she’s a force to be cautious of.  I think that’s a big part of her characterization too.  Much like the action heroes of old, Cassidy reveals herself more by action than words.

This isn’t to say that she’s stupid or turns to violence immediately.  She’s the one who put the entire journey together and acts as a guide for Lloyd and the readers.  Early on, you can tell that Cassidy is big into making deals and staying out of trouble until she knows what the problem is.  The polar opposite of her new friend, so there’s going to be some friction there.  It is hinted that she might have dependency issues at times, but that stems from her never being on her own. There’s comfort in having a companion when the world has gone insane.  Although she also occasionally hints that Lloyd is more property than friend.

Just writing this, I think Cassidy is a hard one to pin down in this book.  You’re catching her soon after her mother is killed and she’s put her plan into action.  The best way to explain it is that she starts out in a transition state and her journey will help her reach a point where she can move on.  Hints of a more vivid personality and demeanor appear, but usually in action scenes.  So Cassidy could also be an adrenaline junkie or just as crazy as Lloyd.  Really hard to explain fully without spoilers.

I know it sounds like a lot of guesswork here and that’s odd for a character’s origin.  It’s only that Cassidy appeared in my mind with no prompting, so she doesn’t have a template like most of my characters.  Her origin is that of a thought stepping out of the mental mist and it’s still coagulating.  I do want her to be tough and confident, but also show a touch of vulnerability like the other characters.  Her world has been ripped apart in more ways than one and multiple times in her life.  She reveals that she lost a baby brother in the first year of the chaos and her father disappeared after he got the family settled.  Her mother did whatever it took to keep them alive, housed, and fed until they had some semblance of a life.  Now that’s been taken too and one of the first things Cassidy does is trade the apartment that she’s called home for a decade along with most of what’s inside.  She’s kind of cutting ties and on a journey to sever the final string before moving on with her life.

A lot of this has to inferred though because the characters don’t blatantly show their emotions and thoughts very often.  So maybe this post will give people another side of Cassidy and also help me evolve her when I write a sequel.  No idea which story to take for that though.  So many choices.

Teaser Tuesday: At the Hands of Stephen

Taking a full chunk of The Mercenary Prince‘s prologue here.  Gives a hint of what will come and I realized I hadn’t mentioned Trinity in a while.  Hopefully it gets people stirring about the book.  Really isn’t much else to do to set this up.  There are some spoilers as usual, but nothing as major as *censored for your reading pleasure*.  Good to finally get that off my chest.

Origin of the Shattered States

From Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Movie

From Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Movie

To be fair, the events leading up to the story of Crossing Bedlam isn’t as severe as seen above.  It’s only the United States that gets hit and I’m even iffy on calling this post-apocalyptic since the rest of the world is fine.  Still that’s the closest category or genre I can use besides Rated-R, action, buddy comedy adventure.  Don’t think Amazon has a list for that.

Now a little background on what the ‘Shattered States’ are and this is all that is known in the books too.  The rest of the world got fed up with the United States for some reason and decided to put it in a timeout.  Walls on the northern and southern borders are heavily armed to prevent escapees.  A global fleet patrols the waters to recapture or kill anyone who tries to escape.  Your fate depends on which member of the fleet you run into.  Some time after the blockade was put up, Washington DC got nuked and that ended the Federal Government.  It’s been a decade since that happened and the remaining locals are doing what they can to survive.  Various cultures have appeared around the nation with some coming right out of fiction.  Trade has taken over actual currency in every place, except Nevada.  Due to still having resources, foreign businesses still make deals with local traders and use special passes to exchange necessities.  Even with all of this, the place is a mess and most people do what they can to survive.

The ‘Shattered States’ wasn’t always like this.  The idea actually came about long ago as something entirely different.  I wanted to keep the same area origin, but focus on a group who were trying to reunite the country.  The leader was ruthless, but the POV character was his second-in-command.  She was a mercenary with more compassion than her leader and the freedom to make big decisions.  I guess she is similar to Cassidy, but only in gender and toughness.  There was a large cast of characters taken from all across the country with specialties and stories.  Every state had dangers, primary uses, and resources for trade.  I spent a week looking up what each place was known for and how that would survive the collapse.  The stories were even plotted out.

Then I realized I was going too political with the story and got bored.  The notebook remained in the middle of the pile and the back of my mind.  I still liked the idea of having the broken world, but not that story.  Then I watched Mad Max: Fury Road . . . and nothing changed.  For a year, ‘The Shattered States’ was a dead tale that would fade away into my personal obscurity.  So, what happened?

Dean Winchester

Dean Winchester

Seriously, I’ve got no idea how this came about.  I was on the exercise bike and I started thinking of a story where a woman traversed a dangerous landscape.  She was a good person who teamed up with a bunch of criminals, so there was an aspect of her falling to their level.  The longer I thought about it, the more the other characters fell out of the story and only two remained.  I still wrote up an outline with all of them, but quickly noticed that I barely touched on the others.  In fact, I seemed to only focus on their death while the other two had meat to them.  The woman had turned into a survivor type in my mind and I really wanted to pair her off with a psychotic, unpredictable maniac.  So Cassidy and Lloyd Tenay appeared with no quest or world to call their own.  Coming up with her wanting to bring her mother’s ashes somewhere was easy, but I still didn’t have a location.

It was the character’s apathy and not caring about how their world fell apart that brought me back to ‘The Shattered States’ notebook.  Everything I needed for a foundation was already written.  The politics I didn’t have the mind and patience for weren’t necessary with these two.  Why would a serial killer and survivor give a thought to events that were bigger than them?  Neither felt like they could save the world or even that it was worth saving.  It wasn’t that type of story any more and I really got into coming up with wild adventures along Interstate 80.

The series became entirely about Rated-R fun and ‘The Shattered States’ certainly exploded under this idea.  There is a level of wackiness to the violence and adventure along with moments of seriousness.  It all kind of fell together along with other pieces that reveal a bit more of the world as your read along.  As far as the original idea, that is probably dead in the water.  That group might be operating somewhere, but Lloyd and Cassidy might never meet them.  If they do then I don’t see them joining up or even getting involved unless supplies are offered.  Lloyd might be running out of graphic t-shirts by that point and Cassidy is always looking for new guns or CD’s to stop her companion from singing.  The crazy bastard can’t carry a tune at all.

Volunteer Request for Crossing Bedlam

Bill Murray from Stripes (BTW- There is no meeting.)

Bill Murray from Stripes (BTW- There is no meeting.)

I was going to make a witty title, but that might get missed by some.  I’ve mixed this request for volunteers with other posts.  Probably shouldn’t have done that.  So this is just a simple:

Help announce ‘Crossing Bedlam’ when it goes live in February!

That’s pretty much it.  I’m still aiming to release on the 12th, which means the email with the post should be going out that weekend.  It won’t be long since this isn’t a series like Windemere.  Probably the basics.  Always happy to get some help.

Blizzard 2016: May God Have Mercy on the Hedges

I’m scheduling this one instead of writing it tomorrow.  The reason is because we’re supposed to get 6-12 inches of snow.  Yes, people are getting worse elsewhere.  Yes, people overreact to winter storm warnings.  None of that matters because I still have to shovel away whatever lands on the walkway, driveway, and sidewalk.  Helping a neighbor out too, so I’ll be working hard.  Might not even get back before this goes live, which is another reasoning I’m scheduling this.

I already see people online teasing others about panicking about the storm.  Here’s the thing though.  What if those who are worried end up being right?  One can still lose power and that means no heat or hot food unless you use gas.  Sure, there’s a good chance that the media is overhyping the storm and it’ll be small.  Then again, if they ever downplay a storm and it hits like cannonball to the scrotum, people will cry bloody murder that they weren’t prepared enough.  My point here is that it’s better to be overprepared and cautious when facing the unpredictable elements than got caught with no heat, no hot water, and only a box of saltines to eat for two days.

In other news, I’m editing and realizing I don’t move as quickly as I used to.  I’m getting worried that I’m slowing down or something.  My energy drops by late afternoon and a nap only makes me groggy.  Probably caused by the cold and being stressed to the point where I don’t sleep well.  I’m unconscious, but I get the feeling that it isn’t a healthy type of sleep.  Part of me wonders if a day of hard work shoveling will reboot the system since I tend to feel more energized after biking.

In regards to editing, I haven’t gotten as far as I’d hoped.  Delays happen and there are nights where I just can’t get the mojo working at the right levels.  I want to finish editing these books by February 19th.  That way I can dive into Book 13 of Legends of Windemere after the kid goes back to school.  Crossing Bedlam should be out by then too.  Reminds me that I need to make a volunteers post for Sunday.  Eh, this is the plan and I’m limping along already.

FYI- This coming week will start the Crossing Bedlam hype posts.  You get a look into the characters and their world as well as a few themes.  It was going to be this week, but I think the topics I switched in worked better.  Especially the one about what you can do for authors in your life.

So, shall we try a goal list?

  1. Finish editing Tribe of the Snow Tiger.
  2. Do blurbs for Tribe of the Snow Tiger.
  3. Start editing Charms of the Feykin.
  4. Shovel snow.
  5. Defrost body.
  6. Play with son in snow.
  7. Shovel more snow.
  8. Rue the fact that I’m not allowed to hibernate.
  9. Eat something
