Tears & Laughter: When Comedies Make You Cry

For those who don’t know what the above video is and didn’t play it, this might not make much sense.  In all honestly, most people look at cartoons as stuff for kids with no substance and total immaturity.  Those aimed at adults are crude, potty humor with no intention other than to make laughs.  Some don’t even have a plot or any sense of coherency.  But enough about those because I’m going to talk about how some comedies can spin you around and give you a punch to the emotional breadbasket.

To be fair, it isn’t always cartoons.  I remember there being some powerful ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ episodes and more recently I saw an episode of ‘Mom’ that was rather gut-wrenching in its rawness.  Still, I can’t even think about Futurama’s ‘Jurassic Bark’ episode without getting teary-eyed.  Heck, I had to find the above video and make sure it carried the impact I wanted.  Don’t want to know how many I went through to find the one I wanted.  It may haunt my dreams.  Anyway, this is a very strange and rare event in these days.  At least to me because it feels like most comedies, especially cartoons, aren’t trying for emotional impacts.

Is this a good or bad thing?  I know many who don’t want a comedy to be serious because they feel it’s preachy.  Even if there isn’t any actual preaching, which makes me think the people saying it don’t know the term.  Still, it makes sense when we haven’t seen the episode before.  You sit down for laughs from beginning to end and leave yourself open to the humor.  Unknown to you this leaves you vulnerable to other emotions.  I mean, some people will cry if they laugh too hard or get too happy.  So we may already be close by the time the finale happens and we’re left tearing up because it touched something.  Maybe a sense of loss that can never be recovered or a decision was made that is revealed to have been the wrong one, but the character will never know.  Imagine if Fry did clone Seymour instead of thinking his dog lived a happy life afterwards.  You do it because I don’t think I have the strength.

Maybe we don’t like the crossover.  Something about our source of laughter making us cry can come off as a betrayal.  We’ll still come back for the next episode, but we now know that this place is one that can turn serious.  Sure, you may go for 20 more episodes before another tear-jerker turns up.  You may even have dropped your guard by then, but there’s still a change.  The funny thing is that a comedy can probably leave a more lasting impact than shows that are predominantly serious topics.  You become numb to the emotional body blows, character deaths, and horrible events in shows that try to only make you wince and cry.  So it loses its effect.  Yet a comedy will only do it occasionally and you’ll always remember when it happens because it stands out among the ‘laughs only’ episodes.  You could even go back and catch a little seriousness in older episodes that you thought were only laughter.

Anyway, this is my opinion on this topic and I know it varies.  I’ll leave you with another Futurama clip.  I mean, I already showed ‘Jurassic Bark’, so I’m sure you’re safe:

Questions 3: Into the Editing Breach

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

Part of me thinks I already did a Questions 3 on editing, but I’m too lazy and tired to search for it.  Probably because I’ve been scrambling to edit this week.  Not easy to do when it’s so cold that I want to hibernate and the most comfortable position I can find is kneeling next to the bed.  Honestly, I’ve seen a lot of authors are in editing mode, so maybe this will be more fun than I realize.  Let’s move on to the questions.

  1. What is one piece of an advice you would give someone to make their editing easier?
  2. What is the most frustrating part of editing for you?
  3. Edit spelled backwards is Tide?  How would you say this is appropriate?

Answer for 3:  I feel like I should answer this to be fair since I’ve answered the other two several times over the years.  I think the backwards spelling is appropriate because you’re washing out the mistakes and stinky stuff from your manuscript.  Like how the tide going out will carry stuff away.  Then again, you could be left with a dead whale on the shore and that’s just upsetting.

Why Do I Prefer Good Triumphing Over Evil?

quote-Ajay-Devgan-the-difference-being-that-in-films-unlike-79922

Now, I’d like to say that ‘win’ does not always equal ‘survive’.  Heroes can be victorious and die.  This part is really a clarification of my own stance and I’m also not entirely sure where to go with this because the above quote sums it up perfectly.

It wasn’t only recently that I heard someone say that they have shows, movies, and books where they good guys win.  They claimed that it’s unrealistic that good triumphs over evil, which is rather telling about the speaker.  I mean, you have a person who accepts that bad guys will usually win.  They want fiction to reveal this and the series that they’re into reflect this thought.  I’m talking about a person who cheers when a good person dies in Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead.  In fact, I watched a series called Defiance and the last season seemed to go full-on GoT.  Many people said it was how a show should be made because it was dark and gritty like life.  I wasn’t one of this people.

Call me naive, innocent, blind, or whatever insult you have in mind.  The truth is that I don’t like having bad guys win unless there’s another story coming where they fail.  So far, I’ve only had evil triumph in Catalysts and Raven’s Hold, which are my attempts at horror.  Note how often I go back to those.  The thing is that I see bad guys winning as a twist ending that has lost it’s use.  It makes the rest of the story rather moot since you’re typically following the hero.  All the work and trials the protagonist went through were for nothing.  In a way, I feel like I was made to waste my time because the world I was invested in has either remained the same or plunged into darkness.  I’ll go back if it looks like a new hero has arisen, but there will be some distance.

good-triumphs-over-evil-quotes-1Here’s the thing with me and the whole ‘good vs evil’ shtick.  I tend to think we do live in a rough world where those of darker natures win over those who are good.  We’re constantly bombared by sensational headlines and reasons to be afraid of the world.  Even at smaller scales, I’ve heard of people getting success by backstabbing and kissing ass while a hard-working employee is locked in their position.  Heck, I was even told once that to rise up the ranks, I couldn’t be nice.  This left a sour taste in my mouth because negativity begets negativity.  I know it’s weird coming from a guy who gets angry or depressed a lot, but that’s another reason I do what I do.  My stories give me hope and allow me a bit of positive energy.

That’s the big reason I have my heroes win.  I put them through hell and break them at several points, but I like to see them find new reserves of strength.  A hero who quits after a setback isn’t one worth following, especially since their story is probably over.  Besides, why should I add to the negativity and cynicism that seems to be running rampant today?  I hate feeling this way, so I wouldn’t want to make someone else come away from my stories thinking that good will always lose.

Do I think it’s wrong to have evil win?  No because it’s a personal choice.  It’s simply not the one I make and there are days I feel like I have to defend my decision to stand on the side of good.  Not only that, but that’s where the stories and Windemere as a whole tends to go.  Bedlam too in a way because that’s about surviving and retaining your humanity in a harsh world.

Anyway, I leave you with this:

Teaser Tuesday: An Amicable Solution

Today I have a mysterious piece from Crossing Bedlam.  Hardest part about excerpts from Bedlam is that they don’t always work out of context.  A brief explanation of what’s going on here is that Cassidy and Lloyd have gotten into trouble with the Pennsylvanian Civil War.  That should cover it without revealing what’s going to happen.
