—George Gershwin

How to Survive in the Shattered States or At Least Die With Dignity

Fry Meme

Fry Meme

(This topic happened on Monday by accident, so the picture was a great find.)

  1. If you see a stray dog, don’t pet it or adopt it.  You may be tempted because it was the right thing to do back in the day.  Now that animal is smarter and wiser than you, so you’d only get it killed.  If the dog decides to adopt you then it’s another story, but never call him Mr. Foo Foo Cupcakes.  He’ll take offense.
  2. If you’re first instinct is to dress in leather and cookware while driving a gaudy vehicle that resembles housewares at Sears then don’t expect to make many friends.  This might make sense to you because Mel Gibson is your personal hero and it’s a free country, so go for it.  Just keep in mind that metal can rust and that cast iron skillet on your crotch looks ridiculous.
  3. If you try to bribe people with money, you will only buy laughter.  Best to market those bills as tissues or toilet paper since there’s nothing backing them.  Confetti and pillow stuffing are other options.  On the other hand, coins can work with a slingshot or be melted down by the right people.  Good idea as long as you don’t have to run from something trying to kill you.
  4. If you think stealing is a good idea then practice first.  Sure, the big drunk looks like an easy mark, but even he can feel you clumsily jamming a hand into his pocket.  Better pray he’s flattered by a tight squeeze or you won’t be breathing for long.  Not to mention we already know that money is worthless, so you’re fingering a used handkerchief instead of a wallet.
  5. Stay away from Nebraska.  Just trust me on this.
  6. If you’re eating some type of meat at a bar or wandering caravan and can’t identify it, don’t ask the cook what it is. Ignorance is bliss and your reaction might be so insulting that you’re going to have to clean the dishes.  Besides, the worst it could be is rat . . . or crow . . . or vegetarian faux beef.  Guess the plus side is that it isn’t human . . . usually.
  7. If you run into a blonde woman wearing a peacoat with a bullet hole over the heart and a friendly man wearing a graphic t-shirt, don’t pick a fight.  They’re the main characters, so you’d only end up being butchered between chapters and mentioned in passing.  Best to just move along and pretend you haven’t seen anything.  Most importantly, don’t touch the jeep or damage the CD Player unless you want the woman to shoot you.
  8. Seriously, don’t go to Nebraska.

Enjoy that?

The United States of America has been crippled. Violently contained by a global military force and left without its leaders, the country has become shattered and chaotic. A decade has passed since the first strike and a new landscape has emerged where survival is more important than anything else. Who will uncover the truth behind the attack and revive this once great nation?

It certainly won’t be Cassidy and Lloyd since they couldn’t care less about that stuff. She is a young woman on a mission to honor her mother’s dying wish, which is to toss her ashes off the Golden Gate Bridge. He is an infamous serial killer she broke out of Rikers Island since hiring a bodyguard wasn’t working out. Not the perfect plan, but having an insane, oddly charming murder-junkie on your side is a plus in the Shattered States.

Bullets and swear words are going to fly as Cassidy and Lloyd travel coast to coast, facing one challenge after another . . . including Nebraska.

Curious about this broken world & these two ‘not even close to being heroes’?

Excerpt: A Relaxing Drive on the Parkway (Foul Language Warning)

The jeep hurtles through a large hole in the parkway divider, the threat of incoming traffic nothing more than a faded memory. Only three of their pursuers manage to follow with a fourth smashing into the gap and blocking the path. Not wanting to be an easy target, Cassidy keeps their vehicle swerving from one lane to another. She can hear bullets pinging off the asphalt and the abandoned cars that have been moved to the side of the road. There is another hole in the divider right before an overpass, so she drives through at the last second. Sliding into the tunnel, Cassidy watches the other vehicles pass the gap before making a tire-screeching U-turn to go in the opposite direction. Five motorcycles are heading toward them, but the heavy jeep and its driver’s refusal to get out of the way makes them an easily scattered threat. One of the bikers is unable to swerve to the side and he crashes onto the hood while his ride is sent spinning into an abandoned van.

“Get off my car!” Cassidy shouts as she reaches out the window. Grabbing the man by the ankle, she yanks him off the hood and lets him tumble into the concrete divider. “This is really going to cost me. Do you know what the penalty for your idiocy is? They kill you unless you escape to the mainland. Then you’re exiled until you find something that the Trade Barons want more than revenge. I don’t have time to go on a treasure hunt. Would you take off those sunglasses and stop humming car chase music?”

“I was only trying to complete the scene,” Lloyd argues as he calmly fires a pellet at a sedan driver. Having mixed the three types of ammo, he is happy to see a yellow orb burst on the woman’s mouth. “There’s the scratching. Now the nausea. We have a spinning and flipping car, folks. Oh, and there goes either the guy in the passenger seat or a really big ragdoll. You know, I’m starting to like what all of you have done with the place.”

“Stop killing people!” the blonde shouts, veering away from a large truck. She narrowly avoids slamming into a small car, the jeep moving off the road to complete the turn. “The more bodies we leave, the harder it will be to regain the Trade Barons’ favor. At least Neddy will send us what we need and . . . this is not the fucking time to change clothes!”

Lloyd stops with his head peeking out of his blood-covered shirt, which is high enough to reveal his scarred stomach. Figuring that he has come too far to stop, he yanks off the garment and hurls it out the window. He pouts when it flies over a car instead of covering the driver’s side of the windshield and causing a crash. Blindly reaching back, he takes a random shirt out of his bags and examines the black top in the side view mirror. The red and black mask of an old comic book character stares back at him, the face giving the illusion of grinning beneath the fabric.

“I remember reading this guy’s series before the Internet made him so popular and he turned up everywhere. Ugh, that sounded so pretentious that I’m tempted to stab myself. Hey, can we still see movies because I want to see his?” Lloyd asks while tying the laces of the black sneakers he hastily put on before making a mess at the Coliseum. “I really like t-shirts with pictures on them. They bring attention to what I’m wearing instead of my face. You can start a conversation about them too. Nice way to meet people and find out if they’re worth leaving alive or not. For example, I have a shirt with another hero and if somebody tells me that the bastard can defeat every other character then I know they have to die. I mean, he’s nothing more than a child-endangering bill-”

“Shut the fuck up, Lloyd!”

“Don’t be angry, kid. You’re doing great.”

“I can’t even figure out if we’re going in the right direction.”

“Turn around and start shooting at their tires.”

“I can’t because I need to save bullets.”

“For what?”

“Nebraska!”

Nearing the Time for Bedlam

This is the week where the little munchkin is home.  So not much is going to happen, especially on days that wife is working.  Not an ideal situation for an author who missed his editing goals so badly that he should hand in his bottle of bourbon, 3 pens, 2 notebooks, his naming book, and beg the Author Gods for forgiveness.  That might be a little dramatic.

The truth is that things kept coming up and I still have just under 100 pages to edit, which is also 6 chapters.  On a good day, I can edit 3 chapters and those aren’t going to be coming very often.  My hope is to whittle it into nothing at nights, so I can still dive into Book 13 when the break is over.  Still, who knows what will happen?  Seems one challenge of the author life is keeping on schedule and allowing for delays.  I haven’t exactly gotten the hang of that.

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Before I get to the main event, a little extra news on a few things.  Some time in the future there will be another round of character pictures from Kayla Matt.  She’s done a lot of great art for Legends of Windemere over the years and I’m looking forward to seeing more.  Especially since Dariana gets a turn.  Beyond that, Jason is going to try to get some thumbnails and sketches to me for the next Windemere book.  Thinking of an April release.  Without Ichabod Brooks being published, I have some extra wiggle room to release books.  The plan is still to release Books 10-12 this year, which would mean 2017 is the final grouping of the Windemere books.  I keep saying this because I’m still trying to wrap my head around it and decide on what will be next.  As usual, so many choices and my mind keeps drifting to things.  Specifically, what to do in the final book and how the superhero thing is still a mess.

Anyway, the big news is that, barring any delays, I’m still aiming to release Crossing Bedlam this weekend.  The post is in draft format while I wait for the cover art and Amazon links.  The email to the volunteers is just waiting for the HTML file to be made from that post.  I’ve got Lloyd Tweets in my head and will be starting slow with the marketing.  Money is low, so I’m going to be cutting back on the pricey ones.  Going to treat this book as if I have a small budget and I’m just starting out.  Of course, the big question is about reviews.  I have a few people who want to buy and read the book immediately because they love the sound of Lloyd.  But I don’t know if that’s definitely going to lead to reviews.  Not to mention this is a new genre for me and is a lot more adult, which seems to mean not every adult will enjoy it.

Think I’m just getting paranoid and nervous while I wait for the final pieces.  Finished the keywords recently and double-checked my blurbs.  The waiting is always what gets to me during these things.

So, what’s the plan for the week?

  1. Finish editing The Spirit Well.
  2. Publish Crossing Bedlam.
  3. Promote Crossing Bedlam.
  4. Go see ‘Deadpool’ and have lunch.
  5. Just realize that I forgot about the laundry.
  6. Prep posts for March, which will be laid back to some extent.
  7. Goof off with the boy.
  8. Stay warm because it’s freezing here.

Threat of the Half-Deads

Darkman

Darkman

This is a piece of the Shattered States that came about early and caused a slight headache for me.  I imagined a terrifying being hunting Cassidy and Lloyd after they did something to make it mad.  Then I came up with a better idea.  They were going to be tracked down by an inhuman assassin.  Pretty simple way to fit that in since Lloyd was an escaped prisoner and the warden wasn’t fed his own spleen.  In fact, the warden is still dining on the finer foods while his prisoners suffer.

I came up with a figure who was covered in rags, had blister-covered skin, above average strength, and felt no pain.  Of course I called it . . . absolutely nothing for two weeks.  I had to figure out where this thing came from because the Plague Bogs didn’t make sense and nothing else was that destructive.  Not even Nebraska.  Then I remembered that I nuked Washington D.C. before the story starts to remove the federal government from play and plunge the country into more chaos.  (This is fiction, NSA.  Or is it NASA that spies on people?)  Anyway, I thought it would be interesting if a new threat emerged from this disaster.

Enter the Half-Deads!  These are people who didn’t die immediately from the bombing and radiation.  They had a bizarre natural resistance that didn’t keep them healthy, but led to a slow demise.  Half-Deads take assassination jobs for the medicines that will keep them alive and numb the pain they feel every minute of the day.  Their touch is radioactive and their medications give them an almost invulnerability to minor damage.  Guns are the best bet for them, but they still have a working mind and will strike from the dark or in areas where you’re vulnerable.  Also they don’t really care about getting shot in the limbs since they never notice.  These really are the most fantastical of the creatures in Crossing Bedlam.

I did put a little more into them that may play a factor in future stories.  For nothing other than supporting character backgrounds.  Half-Deads have a 5-7 year lifespan, so you would think they’d be gone by the time the story starts.  Well the originals are probably long dead, but they are known to kidnap innocent people.  Their victims are brought to D.C. where they are turned into Half-Deads and released into the world.  Nobody knows for sure because the area is plain lethal.  Some studies have shown that Half-Deads are able to sense when someone has enough radiation resistance to survive the transformation.  This comes from how a person reacts to their touch or bite, which is why they don’t always kill on the first strike.

Honestly, I don’t know how often they’re going to appear in the other books.  The main purpose for the Half-Dead in Crossing Bedlam was to have something preventing Cassidy and Lloyd from turning back.  They have to keep moving and this thing can’t be easily killed.  For Cassidy it’s because she’s terrified of the thing like everyone else in the Shattered States.  Lloyd is different in that he can’t get close to it and has to think of a way around its lethal touch.  Yes, it’s kind of like a monster vs monster thing.

Red Panda at Bronx Zoo

The plan is to release Crossing Bedlam on Saturday or at least hit publish that day.  So this is my last request to see if anyone wants to help announce the book when it’s finally gone live.
