Coming Full Circle: One of Those Weeks

First order of business . . . this post has been scheduled because I’ll be running around today.

Second order of business . . . pancakes.

Third order of business . . . stopping this joke from going any further.

I do want to say that I’m still trying to get the secret project off the ground.  The volunteers have been told what it is and I’m hoping to keep it secret until the one thing I need to happen actually happens.  Sent a message to the right people early in the week and haven’t heard back.  Apparently, this doesn’t happen as quickly as I thought it would.  On the other hand, most of my projects are so terrified of hitting a deadline that I wouldn’t know what to do if it actually happened.

Not much else to report this week because this has been the house of disease.  My son was getting over strep while my wife had bronchitis and I had an upper respiratory infection.  I’m not done.  My dad got the flu and my mom got a virus, which means every person in this house got a different ailment.  So chunks of my time were spent with errands and cooking.  We’re also cleaning up for Passover next Saturday, so I’m realizing how smart it was to not start a new book in April.  I tried getting back into biking too, which my body wasn’t entirely ready for.

The last week in April is my son’s Spring Break, so I won’t be getting much done around that time.  Thankfully, I got all the posts for May ready, which means I’m out of ideas for June.  I have an Ichabod Brooks story that needs to be posted in its 7-8 sections, so that might be something.  Asking for topics doesn’t seem to go very well, which means I need to sit and think.

The only progress I’ve made this week is designing a few of the future Bedlam characters that will appear in the sequel.  Cassidy and Lloyd got their redesigns too.  Another thing that turned up is that I got to thinking about where to go after Legends of Windemere.  I don’t know if I mean stories or being an author in general.  With it being so long since a Windemere book release, I’m not doing too hot.  Still I should consider if I’m going to write up the first of a new series or do that ‘epilogue’ that closes out a characters personal journey.  An issue with the latter is that it would reveal the ending of Legends.  Maybe I can just write it and publish it a year after Book 15 goes live.

Did I mention where I am today?  Totally forgot about that.  Well, some people might remember there was something about a cardiologist.  It didn’t happen because the referral didn’t take my insurance . . . or the plan I’ll have next.  So I’m at the clinic again for a physical and whatever they can do for the ticker.  Another cardiologist will be called on Monday and we’ll see what happens.  Not exactly thrilled about all this since I’m scared about being charged for this when we can’t afford it.  Hopefully I can have something go in my favor this year.

So, what are the goals for the week?

  1. Create more characters for Chasing Bedlam.
  2. Clean house for company.
  3. Get the cardiologist thing over with.
  4. Try to up the biking from 10 to 12 miles.
  5. Plan some stuff for June posts.

Ye Olde Spy Shoppe: Buy 2 Saints, Get a Bond Free

Q from James Bond

Q from James Bond

Welcome to our little store found in an undisclosed location.  Yes, I know we have a Chinese restaurant next door, but that doesn’t narrow anything down.  Have any idea how many of those are around?  Most of them are fronts for criminal organizations or government agencies anyway.  You figure that out by what they put in their house special fried rice.  Now, what can I get for you?  Whoa, whoa, whoa!  I think you misunderstand this place.  The cars, guns, and crazy gadgets are important, but you really want the right person to use it.  That’s what we sell here: The actual spy.

Now that we understand each other, let’s get the basics done.  You have the standard James Bond package of tall, dark, British, and emotionally distant.  That last one can vary depending on his appearance.  This is cheap since everyone looks for them.  There’s a barely used bald action star version, but it’s American and only good for one mission.  I see you looking at the female model, which is very handy.  Only problem with that one bad move on your part and they go after your entire operation.  You want what?  A red-haired Australian with a love of tattoos and built like a track runner.  Do you know how the spy game works?

Customer is always right even when they’re wrong.  Let’s get to skill set.  You need some type of fighting style, but that’s not all.  Treat your spy like a specialized thief, which means moving silently, sticking to shadows, picking locks, and other abilities that help with breaking and entering.  Yes, we do have drunken boxing.  That along with krav magra?  We have a policy not to ask what jobs you’re going to be taking, but this is too bizarre for me not to be tempted.  At least the motorcycle riding and intimidation techniques make sense for the guy.  Wine tasting . . . We have a sale where you can get that along with golf, art history, and another ‘high society’ skill for cheap.  Sorry, but we’re completely out of ‘natural charm’ until next month.  That goes quickly.  Best I have as a replacement now is ‘smooth talking’ and ‘talented dancer’.  Drunken boxing cannot be used as a replacement for dancing.

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio. Now broadcasting at one point twenty-one jigawatts across all the known galaxy, alternate realms, and into the future and past. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl.

Our guest today is Limbreth, a young woman, on a quest to recover a stolen book and find the Bow of Hart.

“Welcome to the show, Limbreth.”

“Greetings from the Forest of Auguron, Lisa Burton.”

“My bio says you’ve joined this quest with a Withling named Hastra. Who’s leading this quest, you or her?”

“Hastra’s in charge but gets a lot of advice from Gweld, an elven ranger and these two dauntless dwarves, Tordug and Makwi. Hastra knows the most about our foe and the Bow of Hart. But these feckless Rokans stole her book, back in the City of Auguron using this magical creature she calls a Bane.”

“Dwarves! I love dwarves. We had…

Questions 3: Remakes, Reboots, & Redesigns

Some Spider-Based Hero Who is Getting a 3rd Movie Incarnation

Some Spider-Based Hero Who is Getting a 3rd Movie Incarnation

I’m pretty sure the title has some people twitching.  Funny thing is that I’m writing this from two perspectives.  One is that I’m sick of reboots and remakes.  Even sequels are wearing on me to the point where I don’t want to pay money beyond Redbox.  Yet, I’m also redesigning Lloyd and Cassidy for their sequel, which makes me feel like a hypocrite.  Lloyd won’t change beyond one thing stemming from a previous action.  For the handful of people who read and enjoyed Crossing Bedlam, you would know that Cassidy reached a point where she needed to change some things.  Maybe what I’m doing is minor compared to what you see out there.  Anyway, I’m going to open the floor to this sticky conversation topic.  (Keep in mind that this is more movies and TV shows than books.)

  1. What do you think of reboots and remakes?
  2. What was the last original story you saw or read?
  3. Do you think people really want original stories?

I’m going to give my opinion on the third question:  Yes.  I think people want original stories.  Yet, I also think we’ve become such a hyper-critical species that we’re most likely to hate these things.  People go out of their way to point out mistakes, connect stuff to earlier works even remotely, and simply prove that something sucks.  So the established things will always win because they’ve already gone through the wringer or existed before the Internet wringer appeared.  The chance of something new reaching that spot is very rare and most studios (and many artists) won’t want to take the risk.  The more new stuff fails, the less of it we’ll see.  Look at how nearly all of the big movies this year are sequels, reboots, and adaptations.  Books are a little safer, but we authors have our trends that we pounce on.  Fantasy is currently GoT, zombies are everywhere, erotica is everywhere, and the YA dystopia craze is starting to fade.  Maybe this is simply how it works.  Entertainment hits in cycles and we’re in the ‘same stuff, different color palette’ phase of things.  People will eventually get sick of it and then either the mediums die out or they find fresh meat.

Anna Celeste Burke

About Anna Celeste Burke in her words

“Life is an extravaganza! Figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge. On my way to Oahu, to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I had married in Tijuana, I was nabbed as a runaway. Eventually, the police let me go, but the rock band broke up. Our next stop: Disney World, where we ‘worked for the Mouse’ as chefs, courtesy of Walt Disney World University Chef’s School. More education landed us in academia at The Ohio State University. For decades, I researched, wrote, and taught a number of gloriously nerdy topics. Retired now, I’m still married to the same…

7 Signs You’re a Fictional Assassin

Assassins Creed

Assassins Creed

  1. Every article of clothing that you own has a hidden weapon.  This makes doing laundry very difficult and it is not uncommon for a knife to get stuck in the lint trap.  Let’s not even get into the challenge of removing blood from silk.
  2. You don’t remember the last time your phone rang and it wasn’t a gravel-voiced man with a request or sultry femme fatale.  There was that elderly librarian calling about a late fee, but that was for one of your aliases.  So it doesn’t count.  Especially since you’re pretty sure that persona died in a bus accident.
  3. You only have two modes: charming and cold.  There is nothing in the middle and you switch so easily that you aren’t sure which one is the real you.  One time you tried to be friendly and it resulted in 17 deaths, 3 collapsed buildings, and a cruise liner getting launched into the Statue of Liberty.
  4. Before you took on your current line of work, you were in some kind of special forces where you learned all of your skills.  There’s no telling what those skills are until you need them.  In fact, you have no idea how you mastered so many things before the your twenty-fifth birthday.
  5. Every time you get into a car, it turns into a destructive chase.  This is why you walk to get your groceries, which still has the occasional gunfight in the produce aisle.  For some odd reason, you’re never arrested even though you’re caught on camera.  The few times cops get involved, they give up after a lengthy chase and forget you ever existed.
  6. If you go a week without leaping off a high ledge into water, staring through a sniper scope, or jumping through a window then you don’t know what you’re doing with your life.
  7. You’ve been to every vacation hot spot, but you have no photos or souvenirs from them.  Not even wanted posters because those mean you aren’t good at your job.

Ever Wonder about Windemere Barbarians? Feel Free to Ask

Timoran Wrath by Jason Pedersen

Timoran Wrath by Jason Pedersen

So I’m still getting over whatever I was hit by and I couldn’t think of a good teaser to put here.  Then I got to thinking about the promo stuff for the next Windemere book.  One of the things I wanted to make a post about is Barbarian Culture because the next book focuses on Timoran.

Now, I could just blab away and spew information in that May post.  Yet, I want this to be more interesting and interactive.  So, I’m opening to floor to those that wander through the blog.

What do you want to know about being a barbarian in Windemere?

To help, I’ll give a brief explanation of what has been established.  Instead of your standard brutes, the barbarians in Windemere are closer to philosopher warriors.  At least Timoran’s tribe is like this.  They have arts, agriculture, and a system beyond ‘biggest one smash smallest one’.  You can have a civil conversation with a barbarian about things other than battle.  They still have an affinity for fighting, but it isn’t all they’re about if you decide to chat with them.  Still, many people mistake them for the destructive berserkers of the old days when their rage controlled them.  So there’s a lot of misunderstandings that cause conflict.

FYI-  The post with questions and answers will go live on May 9th.

Last Minute Addition:

For all the Secret Project volunteers, I apologize for the delay.  I contacted Amazon to see if things would move ahead, but I haven’t heard back.  Until they make the change, I can’t really do anything.  Didn’t realize it would take this long.

Rushing to the Reaper

We move too fast
In everything we do
Planning every minute
To ensure all gets done
As if death is at our door

You see it on the road
People weaving into harm
As if the reaper
Is racing up behind
When he is waiting up ahead

We do it to our children
Pushing all they do
As if doom has them on the list
Planning to take them
Unless they speak at two

All our actions center
On what tomorrow holds
And how to get there fast
Skipping over days like leaves
Crushed beneath a funeral march

The quicker that we move
The faster we reach our maker
Who may ask us to our face
Why we never slowed our pace
And listened to the wind
