Hello, I Must Be Going. I Cannot Stay. I Came to Say I Must Be Going

That’s what today feels like as I write this.  I’m typing this up before I leave for a family event.  Last night was a birthday party and tomorrow is ‘Detective Pikachu’ and another birthday gathering.  All of this is fun, but it can be exhausting.  Especially after the week I’ve had and the one I’m stepping into.  I’m going to categorize to make things easier.  Sadly, I don’t have a writing one because no progress in the WIP or sales has been made this week.  Just too busy.

Work

I’ve found that it’s weird to call this work since I do enjoy going and the day typically goes by quickly.  There was a meeting this week, which took up some time.  Found that I wasn’t too interested in lunch, but that might be because people keep talking about my weight as if I can’t fit through doorways.  Maybe I’m doing a little stress eating and I haven’t managed to fit in biking time for the last month.  Wow, going off topic because there isn’t much I can say here.  A coworker got me to play chess a few times . . . I’m really bad at chess.

Next week is going to be more low key since it’s standard.  I have to take a day off for the life event.  If things go a certain way, I’ll be able to name it next weekend.

TV Shows

Not much here.  With ‘Into the Badlands’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory’ done, I don’t have much outside of Netflix.  I’m dragging my feet on ‘The Punisher’.  Maybe I should just get Hulu and hop on all the animes that I see.  Only reason I don’t is because I want to finish the Marvel Netflix shows before they’re gone.  I’m finding I mostly use TV for background while working on puzzles.  ‘Lucifer’ Season 4 was fun and kept my attention though.

THE CAR

This was the second biggest event of the week.  My old car needed to be replaced.  It could run, but wouldn’t pass inspection next month.  The key didn’t always turn when I wanted it to as well.  A family friend had a 2002 Toyota Camry that they were going to get rid of and it’s in amazing shape.  So, the paperwork was taken care of and the car is mine.  My son and I spent the morning experimenting with the buttons then taking it out for a test drive.  There are seat warmers, an AC/Heater vent for the back, lots of airbags, 6 CD player that has been loaded with Rock music, lots of compartments, and a built in sun shade on the rear window.  I haven’t figured out the alarm nuances yet, so I’ll probably be setting that one off for a while.  My son is loving the digital compass built into the rear view mirror that he reads while we drive.  He wants me to try the moon roof again, but I still can’t figure out how to close it completely.  No idea why I would use it either.  Nice to have something go my way for once too.  It’s first real journey will be to ‘Detective Pikachu’ tomorrow.

Family

This was the scary part of the week.  My son had a small cold early on and panicked one morning before school.  He gets nervous when he’s sick because he fears throwing up.  He usually calms down once he gets to school, but I guess something went awry this time.  It resulted in a really big asthma attack that involved him being put in a wheelchair as a precaution.  Thankfully, my mom was able to get to him quickly and his doctor saw him immediately.  Grandma had the magic touch to get him to relax and eat.  There was some life event drama around his medication too, but a day of rest got him back on track.  The first person to call me about it didn’t reveal how severe it was, so I’m glad I talked to the nurse and got the true picture.  Otherwise, things could have gone south and I was able to tell his doctor that he was really having trouble breathing.  It threw me off for the rest of the day, but the other teachers understood why I had to step out to take care of things.  I would have stayed home with him, but my parents are around and I trust them to take care of him.  He was in fighting shape by the end of the day and earned his first green stripe in martial arts.

Staying on the family topic, my son has a big chorus concert on Monday.  I’m excited because he’s been singing ‘Queen’ songs for months in preparation.  They seem to be doing a medley of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘We Are the Champions’, ‘We Will Rock You’, and ‘Another One Bites the Dust’.  There are other songs involved, but he only cares about this collection.  Of course, this is why he insisted on both ‘Queen’ CD’s being included in my CD player choices.  I’ve got 2 of those, Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gorillaz, and Velvet Revolver.

The Future

As I said, the life event will be rising up as well as a few other things.  The week is going to start well and then get a little crazy.  Next weekend is Memorial Day, so I’ll be spending 3 days of fun with my son.  Depends on the weather since the big thing is a trip to the zoo and then we aren’t sure.  I have to cook some meals for the following week because I’m getting into a busy period.  Not too hard since the little guy wants to help.  Just a Penne with homemade Vodka Sauce and made cooked up a bunch of chicken filets to make dinners easier throughout the week.

Writing-wise, I have a post going up tomorrow about some ideas that I’m tinkering with when I can.  One takes more priority.  War of Nytefall: Eradication needs 5 days of all writing to get done.  I might be able to whittle away that number by using nights and get myself down to a weekend.  Really hoping this story is coming out well because of all the breaks.  We’ll see what happens.  Maybe I’ll get lucky and retain enough energy to write a section tonight after the family gathering.

Goals of the Week

  1. Teaching time!
  2. Son time!
  3. Writing time!
  4. Blog post scheduling time!
  5. Eating time!
  6. Sleeping time!
  7. Life event time . . . Ugh!
  8. Cooking time!
  9. Detective Pikachu!!!!

Oh, man!  Pandora just started playing ‘Dearly Beloved’, which is the theme from ‘Kingdom Hearts’ theme.  Making me tear up because I’ve been having these strange bouts of vivid nostalgia.  Almost like my heart and mind want to go back in time because of all the stress.  I really need to find a way to get this out of my system, but I’m not sure if texting or blogging would work.  Guess it wouldn’t hurt to try and make it a Sunday post for next weekend.

A tiny update

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

I need to get back to my writing, but an update is in order.

First an apology. I signed up for the OWS CyCon, in an attempt to reach new readers. They have a lot going on, so I could only manage so much. One of the things I did was enter several cover wars and character battles.

Earlier, I asked for your support, but the voting apparatus let everyone down. It simply does not function. You guys turned out, but were unable to cast any votes. For this, I am sorry. I hate “going to the well” in the first place, but when something doesn’t work it makes me look bad.

At any rate, the convention people are trying to remedy this by using a different service. The only thing up so far that I’m involved in is Fantasy Cover Wars. The new voting link is here.

The Fantasy Character Battles have also been reconstructed. If you love the root monsters, you can give them a vote here. I’m currently behind my competitor at the time of this post.

Again, I appreciate everyone of you.

I have no idea how all this is tallied, but you can still vote for The Lanternfish in cover wars at the OWS CyCon.

This is the voting portal. Since you can still vote, I assume I advanced to the next round. here. My guess is that I start from zero in the new round, so feel free to vote again. If any of you know more about this stuff, drop me a hint.

The Root Monsters are entered in character battleshere. Voting is open now, so you can show these little guys some love too.

Writing Empathy as a Power or Ability

Yahoo Image Search

Mary L. Schmidt asked a few months ago about writing a post about empathy or intuitiveness towards emotions.  Now, I’ve thought a lot about this and I think this is something we should look at for every character.  Sure, you have those who possess the power to manipulate emotions and those who can read them from a distance, but those can also be considered telepathy.  Empathy falls into an odd category if you make it a power, so let’s take a look at it.

Why is empathy a tough and strange one to use as a power?  One reason is because it is very ‘narrow’ in scope with it connecting to emotions.  Not thoughts, but the feelings behind that.  Many authors make a mistake in having characters read thoughts along with emotions and still calling them empaths.  As soon as they get words instead of feelings, you have a telepath.  So there’s a very sharp drop-off, which is why you more commonly find it in three versions:

  1. A villainous empath will do things such as increasing negative emotions or stealing positive ones in the heroes.  They are more manipulative and direct in using their powers.  One finds these empaths have an incredible amount of control as well because they rarely seem to suffer from their actions.
  2. A heroic empath will be very diplomatic and nurturing towards others.  They will do the opposite of the villain in that they absorb negativity and bestow positive emotions.  This is if they have control because many times they will simply sense things and be used to foster suspense and drama.
  3. The third empath has no control whatsoever.  They are at the whims of the emotions around them.  For example, f people are angry then they get mad for no reason or have an urge to get away.  They have no barrier to block the emotions of others, which is something you can find in reality as well.  (In my books, I did something like this with Dariana in Legends of Windemere.  Without her ring, she couldn’t block the thoughts and emotions of others.  So, you can see that empathy can go along with telepathy.)

Now, when you have a character with this power, you need to consider how much control they have and if they can influence others.  How exposed are they to the emotions of others is a great starting point.  In fact, this is something one should probably consider for all of their characters.  Empathy is a very important factor in stories.  You want characters to feel for each other in some fashion, especially if they’re friends, lovers, teammates, and enemies.  Yes, empathy doesn’t only deal with fostering and sensing positive.  You also want the reader to feel emotions towards the characters, which means creating empathy in the audience.  Not an easy task at all.

One of the things to never forget in order to create empathy is to use the correct words without being blunt.  Telling a reader that someone is happy will fall flat, but so could just praying that they get the sensation right.  Facial expressions, body language, dialogue tags, and word usage are only some the things to get a point across.  For example, having two characters yell at each other with no exclamation points, only ‘said’ being used, and the lack of face and physical action description will be nothing more than empty words.

  • “I can’t believe you,” said the woman.

Sure, you can get the general idea, but it isn’t nearly as powerful as:

  • “I can’t believe you!” roared the woman, her right eye twitching as her temper flared like an active volcano.

Bet you got a bit more out of that one.  Figurative language is always useful.  (Yes, I’m using terms I’m hearing in high school ELA.  I promise not to do it often.)

I was hoping to have more tips, but I really only have one more.  Try to write while feeling the emotion that you want to create.  If it’s an angry scene then get mad.  Love needs love.  Sadness needs sadness.  I’m not saying you need to go fully into the emotion, but you need to unlock your own empathy in order to put that little bit of your soul into the words.  This isn’t a guarantee because readers need to open themselves up as well, which is on their head.  Yet, you can still crack the barrier a bit and give them an entrance if you write with the proper emotions in mind.  This is especially true in the stronger scenes such as battles, romances, and arguments.

I almost forgot that I do have one empath and it’s a strange one because his power doesn’t work the way one expects.  Luther Grathan in War of Nytefall: Rivalry is a Dawn Fang with an empathy power.  He is able to taste the air and discern the emotions in the area with the strongest ones getting his attention. He has practiced enough to filter out the constant sensations and only reacts to something that seems out of place.  He never gets thoughts from this, but will try to make assumptions.  It was really a last minute power that I gave him in place of surface scan telepathy.  Overall, I like how this is both unique and not over the top, which feels like how empathy should be.  Emotions are strong, but the reading of them always strikes me as something needing a gentler touch.

Those are my thoughts on empathy.  Feel free to let me know what you think.  It could be on its use in fiction or reality.

Guest Post: Interview by Sergeant Joe Friday

L. Marie's avatarEl Space--The Blog of L. Marie

L. Marie here. A strange man calling himself Sergeant Joe Friday strong-armed me invited me to share this interrogation interview with the awesome John Howell. Enjoy!

I’m Sergeant Joe Friday. My partner is Frank Smith and I’m a cop. I was working the day watch in and around the county of Los Angeles. It came to my attention that one John W. Howell had finally left the safe confines of Texas and was due to arrive at Los Angeles International Airport this afternoon. Since Mr. Howell has long been on our list of persons of interest, we decided we needed to intercept him at the airport.

There we were standing around waiting for the arrival of the plane from Austin. My partner had gone to the snack bar for a coffee while I busied myself with the paper. Just as I was about to get to the score of…
