Clyde’s Path from Thief to King

Bakura from Yugioh

It’s been a fun path for Clyde, which comes to an end in War of Nytefall: Eulogy.  It hasn’t always been clear and the lines have been muddled between the various hats he has worn.  Probably a good thing since I think it makes him a more fluid character.  You don’t have him abruptly switching roles and jarring the audience.  So, what are the hats he’s been wearing?

Thief

At the very beginning of the series, Clyde was established as a thief.  This is what got him into trouble too.  He was caught trying to steal a holy relic and was in the process of being executed when the Great Cataclysm struck.  This is why he became a Dawn Fang, so you can see why this role is at his core.  If he was never a thief, he would never have been put in this position.  For most of the series, he even considers himself a thief before anything else because that’s what he was at the start.

I tried to keep him with thief-like abilities and habits too.  This didn’t always come about because he was too busy to pull off heists.  You see the thief role turning up primarily when he is using emotions and doing anything sneaky.  This is when you can see that he’s cunning and knows how to trick people.  A perfect skill for a thief who was a burglar similar to Mab.  I considered giving him lockpicks at times, but his strength and bluntness made those pointless.  Of course, that’s also why a reader could forget that he had this role or the associated abilities.

Warrior

I kept trying to steer clear of this one, but Clyde had that battle lust.  It was actually similar to what happened when I played him in roleplaying games.  I’d want to be more thief and sneaky, but events would force me to fight.  Clyde would have to get stronger and more vicious to survive what was thrown his way.  This carried over to the books because his savagery in combat was just part of him by this point.  Ignoring it felt like I was working with either a different character or a prequel version of Clyde.

To be fair, Titus and Decker are better examples of warriors.  Clyde fights, but I would say he’s more of a brawler.  There isn’t any training or strategy behind him most times.  He barrels into a fight, starts swinging, and only thinks if his enemy manages to survive the first assault.  This comes from a sense of superiority that he typically keeps in check, but it isn’t like there were many who could go toe-to-toe with him.  This is why Alastyre was such a shock to his system.

Gang Leader

You kind of get a sense of how Clyde was in this role since he’s trying to maintain it throughout the series.  It’s explained that most of the gang were autonomous, but they all shared some of their spoils to maintain a base and supplies.  Titus ran the mercenary side of things and Chastity was the blackmailer.  Clyde was their leader, but he was very hands off.  He would do jobs with Mab or by himself then return to the lair to hang around if anyone needed him.  Most times, they didn’t want to bother him.  Perhaps the main reason for this organization was to seem more professional for any nobles who hired them to do jobs.  Just professional enough to seem serious.

Clyde really did try to run Nytefall in this way, but it didn’t work at all.  From the beginning, you had characters reminding him that things are different.  He really did try to deny that for a few volumes.  Kept going back to wanting to be a simple gang leader until the very end too.  It kind of made Clyde a little immature, but I couldn’t bring him to a point where he would proudly accept this.  He had so much in his life change, so he was clinging to whatever old pieces he could find.  Being a laidback gang leader was one that he saw as appealing when compared with . . .

Vampire King

This was the final hat that Clyde had to put on and it came with the biggest headache imaginable.  Even when he was given the title, he didn’t know what to do with it or if he would keep it.  I played around with the idea of him trying to resign immediately, but knew Xavier would swoop in.  That’s the only reason Clyde accepted.  He knew him being the Vampire King made his rival angry.  He’d already waged a war over a grudge and out of spite, so this shouldn’t surprise anyone.

It was difficult to imagine Clyde as a true king given his personality.  I think that was why it was appealing to put him there.  Xavier wanted the power and title so badly that you knew he shouldn’t have it.  Clyde didn’t want it, so it felt like he would be a better person to have in that role.  Writing that out is difficult because a resistant ruler can be hard to wrangle for plot purposes.  I’d say how it all turned out, but that’s a key part of the book. Feel free to read it and see how things turned out.

WRITING AND THE SEASONS PART 2

D.L. Finn, Author's avatarStory Empire

Hi SEers! Denise here with Part Two of talking about writing and the seasons. Today I’ll finish with summer and fall. If you missed Part One, here is the link.

Summer means a lot of things, but what comes to mind is school vacation, barbecues, swimming, and hot weather.

BOOKS SET IN SUMMER

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

SUMMER OF ’69 by ELIN HILDERBRAND

To Kill a Mockingbird byHarper Lee

A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare

Jaws byPeter Benchley

Summer is a fantastic setting for a budding new romance. A character can meet someone at a beach, on vacation, or at an outdoor music festival. Is it temporary or something that can bloom?

Summer is when people go camping, some in crowded campgrounds and others deep into the woods. One possibility brings conflict with surrounding campers with loud music at night or stealing your…

Band Breaking Up Already?

Ogre

This may be a quick one, especially since I’m still trying to rest on my break.  I don’t know how to explain this issue too.  Is it good or bad?  Eh, whoever is free to take a look at the post may have an idea.

Earlier in the year, I came up with an idea for a series or collection of short stories revolving around a group of thieves.  Of course, this takes place in Windemere and a guild is involved.  I came up with a general idea for the group who are trying to find a missing hoard.  It’s a legendary treasure that disappeared during the Great Cataclysm that most thieves don’t believe exist.  At least, that was the original plan.  I’ve run into some issues when I think about it.

Most importantly, I find that many of the character no longer appeal to me.  The leader and halfling assassin were cool, but I’m leaning more towards the intelligent ogre and cannibalistic gnome duo.  Maybe it’s because the latter is a curious tale of switched intelligences and a source of comedy.  The vampire who would rather read than fight is in the middle right now while I keep forgetting I put a caster in the group.  So, the main cast is getting jumbled.  This stirs up problems:

  1. The ogre and gnome can’t really carry a story given their personalities.  Neither are the types to be leaders.
  2. The ogre and gnome wouldn’t care about the hoard.  I don’t know what they would want if they were in charge.
  3. I would lose the chance to have a female orc lead if I ditch her.

It could be that I haven’t thought of this idea much before.  The gnome is Berumbo who I made in college, so he’s always safe.  The ogre is based around a friend who brings him up at times.  These two have the most amount of work put into them too.  I might have to take some time to sit down and really tinker with this idea to see if it can regain its legs.  It doesn’t help that I don’t really know what to do exactly.  I’m just rambling, I guess.

Found my notes and I did have a lot.  First book would be them trying to find the Lost Hoard only to fail and get into trouble.  Second book was another attempt, which ends with the group getting into trouble.  Third book was the big quest with a ‘sure thing’ and the orc leader trying to deal with effects from events of the second book.  I notice that I don’t really have a path for the ogre and gnome here.  Do they want to switch back or are they simply having fun?  This story is a big head scratcher at times.

It’s possible my frustrated and fear revolving around ‘Phi Beta Files’ isn’t helping the matter.  I may be redirecting that at other ideas.  I’m trying to work it during the break, but my confidence in general seems to be damaged.  Not sure what took a chunk out of my writing mojo.  Low sales?  No support from this side of the computer? Social media thrusting successful authors’ promos in my face all the time?  Working during the age of Covid causing depression?  I really have no idea.  Hopefully, 2022 is better and I can find something to smile about in terms of writing.

Goal Post: Christmas Has Arrived

It’s Christmas, so I don’t know if I should bother putting a lot of effort into this.  Most people are off-line with their families as they should be.  I’m currently getting ready to watch ‘Matrix: Revolutions’ and then ‘Matrix: Resurrection’.  Watched the first two movies yesterday.  So, it feels like this is the start of a laidback weekend.

Of course, I’m still feeling the effects of extreme stress.  It was a short week, but a lot of personal stuff happened that drove my anxiety into the stratosphere.  Took most of my willpower and focus to make it through the day, so I collapsed nearly every night.  At least, I tried since there were a few nights where I had to take care of things.  This is why I’m looking forward to some lazy time.  It’s cold and miserable out too, so I have no urge to wander out of the house.

Hmmm . . . All I have to report as far as progress goes is finishing all of the January and February posts.  I might start in on March this coming week.  Part of this is because I’m going to be taking a 4 week virtual course in January and February, which will take a lot of my time.  This is for work and it’s about bias in the classroom, so I have to handle weekly modules and workloads.  Sounds very interesting, which is why I signed up, but it means any book writing and outlining will be pushed back.  I don’t think I’d have much time for heavy projects until March anyway.

Actually, it could be the summer when I dive back into writing an actual book again because things are busy.  War of Nytefall: Eulogy isn’t selling just like the rest of the series, so I’m not rushing to publish again.  Definite proof that authors need support if they’re going to keep going.  I’ll still write my stories, but I don’t feel like I have an audience waiting for me.  So, I will take my time with Darwin’s adventures and have a few written/edited before I start putting them out.  At least, that’s what’s going to happen now since I have so little energy and time.  So, if I take months to finish one book instead of weeks then it won’t feel so bad.

The coming week is going to be split.  For the first part, I’m on my own, so I’ll work on a few projects.  My goal is to make most or all of the ‘Phi Beta Files’ enemies since I finished the four heroes.  I might go through the outline for Darwin’s second adventure too in order to have that ready.  Need to edit the first one with a clear mind to make his reactions more consistent.  That’s why I need that course to be done.  I’m going to hand edit this time again because it worked out for me last time.  So, it’s really just going to be ‘Phi Beta Files’ and bringing myself to the point of the stories.

The second part of the week is when I’ll have my son.  Fun shall be had, but it looks like family stuff will be going on too.  We’re aiming to get one father/son zoo trip in like we do every year.  There’s a big Christmas light display that you can drive through that we’re going to as well.  So much got planned that I don’t know if we’ll get to rest before the day before school starts up again.  Think we’re going to attempt ‘Fellowship of the Ring’ as well, but it won’t be the extended edition.  I have to split the regular one into two pieces to avoid losing him.  Fingers crossed that it works.

Can’t think of anything else to report on my week.  It was all about getting to the break and starting it.  Drama happened because that’s how my life goes.  Means the goals should be easy:

  1. Relax
  2. Have fun
