All Behind You (To Ionia)

frabz-Best-Friends-How-my-mom-sees-us-How-my-dad-sees-us-How-teachers--5664f3

I don’t have to rehash what happens tomorrow.  I’m sure many of us are going to be on pins and needles waiting for news about our fearless friend, Ionia Martin.  Not really sure what else to say that hasn’t already been said in public and what I’ve told her when we talk outside of WordPress.  There are serious conversations between the squirrel threats and her telling me to stop being a bloody stuuuuupid  American.  This poem is for my best friend who I love dearly and would do anything to help her through this.

You are not alone
As you face your dragon
Everyone is with you
Though you cannot see them
Our strength is yours to take
If it will carry you
From beginning to the end
Every friend will think of you
From when they wake
Into their nightly dreams
Prayers and positive thoughts
Are in the air for you
Never fear that you are alone
Because all of us are with you
In spirit and in heart

Ionia and I keep batting this one back and forth when the other needs a pick me up:

Crafting Worlds and Storytelling

roleplayingYouthful wanderings
Shunned by many others
For the sake of stereotypes
Saying these games are lame
As if lesser than their acts
There is a purpose
To these ‘nerdy’ quests
They teach to tell a story
And think beyond our real

Sure, a player ate a die
Because it fell into the popcorn
My friend and I
Always grabbed each others drink
Dragons were slain
And spells were cast
Fun was had
Imaginations flexed and held
Which was the point

Even in my middle years
After my dice days gone
People still mock and tease
At the mention of my past
Enjoying my defense
And angry arguing
I have only one thing to say
Riddick played D&D
So go fuck yourself

One thing I cannot wrap my head around is how I still get teased for playing Dungeons & Dragons in my high school and college years.  I got great stories and storytelling skills out of that hobby.  So, it obviously wasn’t a waste of time.  It really is strange to be mocked for this hobby when I don’t do it anymore.  Half the time, it doesn’t make any sense.  For example:

A Facebook ‘friend’ decided to take a random shot at me because pissing people off is a more noble hobby than role-playing games.  A meme was posted of two pale, scrawny teens with ninja weapons.  The one in the front had glasses and the caption was “Dungeons & Dragons Players: You will not take our virginity!”  She tagged me as the glasses kid and wrote how it was really me.  She claimed to legitimately believe that was me even though the kid looked like an emaciated version of the guy who plays Kick-Ass.  Curly hair and I have straight hair.  Face all wrong.  Kid had a nunchuka while I love swords.  I didn’t know about the tagging until people started asking me about the picture and who the other kid was.  I think the damn thing is still up there too, but I rarely wander onto Facebook.

My point of this is that a lot can come from these games.  Even if you’re not an artist, you learn how to solve problems simply by thinking.  A person that can think outside of reality can create solutions that have never been thought of before.  It’s not the only way to get this mentality, but it is a way.  Besides, it’s a hobby.  Most hobbies are ridiculous to those that don’t participate, so you might as well just shrug and go ‘whatever’.  God knows, I did it when the Facebooker above tried to introduce me to hentai and made me wish I had the ability to turn my sense of sight off.

So, have you ever had a beloved hobby that other people didn’t understand or like?

Open My Floodgates

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

Spinning
Whirling
Round and round
My brain twirls upon itself
Pushing against the dam

So open the floodgates!
Releasing images of all
Both twisted and serene
Monsters, mayhem, and madness
All tastes of fantasy fare

Warriors dance among the dead
As dragons sleep in clouds
Flicking griffins with their tails
Only some see spaceships
Hover on horizon’s tongue

Casters light up the world
Dueling and showboating
To entertain the impotent gods
And irritate the vampires
Who snarl from crypts and taverns

Such activity and chaos
When my mind is left to wander
Armored sheep will save the day
And a warrior will lose his mind
Once my guard is down

Until the monsters come to call
The darkest ones
I keep locked behind the gate
Repeatedly eating each other
To pass their imprisoned time

The battle erupts
My mind struggles to hold on
Letting inner voices vent
With imaginary blows
That tire all involved

Soon all is quiet
Every beast at sleep
Swept back into their cages
As fallen heroes rise
Dusting off their wounds

The cycle starts anew
As my voices take their place
Most waiting in the wings
Or playing in my dreams
While champions take the front

Editing my Novel, The Tome of Worlds

Beginning of a series of posts on an author’s editing process.

How many of you have edited a novel? What’s your process? Do you have any favorite books on the editing process?

I put the last word of my novel, The Tome of Worlds, to paper on July 10. Since then I have written and edited one short story on the end of Edgar Allan Poe and am at the end of another short story about an empty door frame standing in the middle of a corridor. That last short story has taken an odd turn and I want to see it to the end before I start editing my novel.

Since early July I have set aside reading fiction and have turned my eye to reading books about and taking notes on the editing process. I read The Fire in Fiction by Donald Maass from cover to cover. I started to read Writing on Your Own Terms by…

This Poem is About Nothing

This is about nothing
No purpose or rhyme
I just had the time
Saying rhyme makes me rhyme?
A flow of crazy thoughts
That run along my fingers
Mooning my brain
As it stares at a shiny dot
I think I left the microwave on
I want a meatball sub
Which is repeatedly denied
Until I do the laundry
I should have written
About candy like I planned
Yet here I sit
Enjoying the unfocused
Not having true control
Plotting tonight’s poem
Where I might let my mind release
A torrent of insanity

Origins: Mutant Wrestling Federation

Cyclops versus Wolverine

Cyclops versus Wolverine

Back in college, I played a lot of tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, Vampire: The Masquerade, and Heroes Unlimited.  The club I was part of started up a convention called Arcon during my last year of college.  I created several games to run during the 3-day convention, but only one really stuck around after.  Working with my roommate and another friend, I created ‘The Mutant Wrestling Federation’.  Obviously, we were into pro-wrestling, mutants, and role-playing games.

We started simple with basic characters to do an elimination tournament.  During the test of the game, we ran into several problems.  One was that the fights took too long.  Those not fighting got bored.  The bigger problem was that people did whatever they wanted with the characters and ignored the small paragraph of background information.  Enemies were best friends because the players were best friends.  One guy kept putting on a referee shirt and rambled about wrestling Hitler, which are things we actually kept because they were hilarious.  We quit the test when it became a chair-hurling melee.

How did we fix this?  Here is where my insanity came in.  I took a full weekend to make three page character sheets with allies, enemies, history, personality, fighting styles, and descriptions.  I ended up creating a 50 year history of a sport federation that doesn’t exist and added characters that would appear over the years whenever I tried to do something with this.  The tournament didn’t happen, so it became a group of 3 players acting out as a new wrestling faction.  They loved the addition of theme music for each character and the comedy of my roommate’s depressive, indestructible referee that could get knocked out with a stiff breeze.  Best line out of him:

“My wife left me and that bitch took the dog.  Let’s get this over with so I can go back to crying.”

It was a fun project and I’ve lost close contact with my friends on this.  I have all the papers somewhere and the sheets typed up on my computer.  The big think is that I have no idea what to do with it.  I had some lengthy plotlines, but writing a series where it takes place in a wrestling federation is rather boring.  Even for me writing it.  This is the same problem that I’m having with Ninja Never Wins.  Both series deal primarily with fighting scenes and that can get boring.  With NNW, I might be able to do it by following one fighter instead of all of them.  Maybe even try my hand at first person perspective and keep it a novella or series of short stories.  I’d go with John Chandler the guy put in jail by his wife’s assassin family and now he needs the money to de-brainwash her.  I’m switching series here.  Sorry.

I’m left with some hope for the MWF since one character rose up to snag an actual book series idea from my head.  Maybe I’ll have all of them enter that series as allies and enemies.  I have a lot and some already made the jump like Plague, Nemesis, Carbomb, and Princess.  Time will tell I guess.

Heading into the Weekend

Dilbert

Dilbert

So I’m on several lists as I head into the weekend. Slow sales day, but I’ve made a lot of progress with the daily blitzes.  Some things that I’ve noticed this time around:

  1. I’m not sure how major a factor pricing is.  At least with fantasy, it seems to be a confusion.  I’m keeping Prodigy of Rainbow Tower at .99 cents for August as a debut price.  Makes sense to me.  I’m on the Bestseller Lists, but I look like an oddity.  I’m surrounded by $2.99 and up last time I checked.  So, my price might not be as big a factor as I once thought.  Obviously something can be done to get any book up that high even if you’re an indie author.
  2. The tweets and Facebook group promos are helping.  They are the only thing I’m doing with a morning, noon, and night post on both mediums.  I know I’m up on all of the sites and I’m waiting for a few others to come up in mid and late month, but these are the big efforts on my part.  Add in all of the blog posts and the help of a precious friend to get all of this rolling.  I’m very thankful to everyone that has supported me.  Hugs all around.
  3. The big impact is needed to get on the list.  Like last time, I hit all of the advertising sites and went nuts on social media.  It got attention and people started heading toward the books.  Do I know what helped and what didn’t?  Not really, but I think everything had an effect.  I really do think you need to come out of the gate with a megaphone strapped to your face.  At least with fantasy.
  4. People are loving the cover, so I’m very thankful to Jason Pedersen for helping me.  I doubt I’d get this far without him.
  5. When working with a series, the second book does boost the first.  I don’t see a major boost, but there is definitely an increased rate of sales.  Enough to put Beginning of a Hero into the 7,000 range.  It actually got 1,500 ranks away from the Top 100 Lists.
  6. Touching more on a part of #2, I think this song sums it up:

I Taught I Taw

From yesterday’s prompt on The Community Storyboard.

Merrie Melodies by Warner Bros.

Merrie Melodies by Warner Bros.

I taught I taw
A puddy tat
While hunting wabbits
During duck season
But it was just . . . I say
It was just a skunk
Kissing a painted stray
Before an earth shattering kaboom
What’s up, doc?
Great hornytoads!
You’re despicable
If you don’t understand
Sufferin’ succotash
What a maroon
Makes me want to spit and spin
Do I need to hold up signs?
Th-th-th-that’s all folks!
Arriba! Meep meep!

Slash of the Sword

fencing attack

He cut me

I can’t believe he cut me

It was an accident

But still it hurts

All across my belly

A stinging scratch

Burning

Probably some blood

I hope not

At least it can’t get worse

He didn’t hit my head

BANG

CLANG

WHACK

medic

Another poem from Israel, this one is about a fun injury I got in fencing.  Not a really bad one.  I moved and the other blade slipped under my jacket to leave a burning scratch along my belly.  Then the next match had a hit that spun my helmet and left a dent.  Oddly enough, I still miss those days.
