The Day I Nearly Quit . . . Everything

Superman's Fortress of Solitude

Superman’s Fortress of Solitude

Not really sure how to start this one, so I’ll just say it:  I nearly walked away from WordPress, writing, and everything this morning.  I’ve spent the last month fighting to get work done and only keeping up.  I barely even caught up since I don’t comment as much as I used to.  Most of the time, I simply don’t know what to say because I’m so horribly burnt out or depressed.

The truth is that I’m exhausted and I thought this post out in my head while pushing my son on the swing.  Now, I’m here and drained.  I’ve recently learned that my parents and some of their friends read this blog, so this led to a recent discussion about the ‘bad stuff’ of social media.  This is the talk that you reserve for your teenage daughter when you find that she’s posted underwear shots of herself on Facebook.  Basically, I’ve painted some people in a bad light and they’re annoyed.  Yet, what am I really supposed to do?  Make up excuses for why I’m posting in a bad mood and not admit that my family pisses me off a lot?  Not reveal that I’m on a December deadline to ‘succeed’ in writing?  What about the fact that my son being home seemed to eliminate my nights and weekends too even after the therapists said I should be given those times to work?  You see why it’s all built up to a level of ‘Fuck it all’.  This concludes the whining part of the post.  Possibly.

Now due to the month of jack shit getting done, I’m left with a priority rearranging.  I need to hand edit books 4 and 5 of Legends of Windemere.  I need to find guest blogs and interviews.  I need to edit Legends of Windemere: Allure of the Gypsies before the Halloween debut, which requires late nights.  This will make the 6 AM wake-ups rough and painful.  Honestly, I’m not even sure of the quality of what I’ve written this year because of the chaotic mess that is my home life.  So the following will happen:

  1. I will make one big post a day or 3 poetry posts a day.  These will be scheduled the night before.
  2. Exceptions to #1 will be a theme day (Sari may get a day soon) or building hype for the next book.  It’s a loose rule.
  3. I will still reblog posts to help people promote projects and such.
  4. I will try to make 1 post on the CSB every few days.
  5. I won’t be commenting as much as I used to, but I think that’s dropped off a lot due to the month of jack shit getting done.
  6. I will be working to respond to comments relatively quickly.

I started this blog to promote my writing, so I refuse to leave.  I also can’t let it replace my writing when I have limited time.  So, I won’t be as prolific here.  I’ll be social, but I really need to focus on Windemere to get stuff done.

What Brings You Back from The End?

thVideo games have replayability.  Movies and television have rewatchability.  These are very common, but what about rereadability?  That book that you always come back to when you feel like reading something.  You know the one.  The book you have practically memorized and you still try to read it every once and a while because something about it just brings you back.

For me this is Ender’s Game even though I haven’t memorized it.  Something about the characters and atmosphere of the world grips me every time. Ender Wiggin is an interesting character and his siblings share his level of depth.  There is a fascinating history woven into the book, which explains the mentality of the adults.  Overall, I think it’s a full-package of greatness and I can’t put my finger on the exact reason.  That might be why I keep coming back.  To catch that elusive key to rereadability and understand why Ender’s Game grips me.

So, what book have you read multiple times and will probably read again?  Have you figured out why you keep reading it?

So Ends Today

He's Out!

He’s Out!

Longest day
Starting with a walk
Across the town
To make myself more man
Than a rabid werewolf
Driving to a family gathering
Beyond the holy wifi
Today is an epic blur
Leaving me exhausted
While the toddler roars and plays
Let him roam the house
As I sleep beneath the bed
How much trouble can he make?

(Just one more day and then I make be able to get my blogging/editing schedule back on track.)

WIP: Keys of Eden

Never Catch Them All

Never Catch Them All

The picture isn’t going to help my case here, but this is where the idea came from.  I was working at Baskin Robbins and bought a Pokemon book because kids were asking for cakes or sundaes with more unique Pokemon on them.  So, I know more about Pokemon than I would like to admit.

This also made me think about writing a story/series where you gather a bunch of creatures for some reason.  The original idea was that a new ruler was needed and several boys and girls were sent out to prove themselves.  To earn the throne, the main character needed to capture and tame 100 or more special creatures.  Every ruler was a master summoner with these creatures and would also have their own unique critter, so really each creature was the essence of a former ruler.  I had all the creatures written out in a book that I’ve since lost.  The idea lost traction with me when I lost interest in writing for kids and focused on Windemere.

Then came the second incarnation, which is where Eden comes in.  A human girl accidentally falls into Eden and is able to communicate with the soul beasts.  The soul beasts are animals that never crossed over to Earth like the animals we know today.  In the history of this world, Eve tried to return and corrupted Eden enough that the animals become anthropomorphic.  She was trapped in a castle and wanted the girl and soul beasts to free herself.  The girl was helped by a fox boy and a few other characters, but the fox boy would eventually take the lead in another version.  He was named Raven for some reason and would set out to unite the 12 kingdoms by getting the blessing of each of their magical beasts.  This idea became iffy when I transferred everything Windemere and I wasn’t a big fan of going biblical anyway.

Another incarnation is a kingdom where each of the creatures is a dragon of some kind, but I’m not sold on that idea.  Some days I’m leaning toward turning this into an Orc story.  You see, the Orc Prince of Windemere is able to summon monsters.  I left this as another story, but I’m thinking of combining it.  The prince will still lose his family and escape to a hidden island where he will need to befriend or dominate these creatures in order to escape.  I might make more characters on there, but I’m still lost on where I really want to go with this.

This isn’t even counting the idea I had this week to go Digimon instead of Pokemon.  The Digimon work with one creature to a character and they can change into something stronger during battle.  Not a permanent change and various forms from one creature.  My only problem with this is it strongly resembles my Zombie Girl story.  So, I don’t know if I can feasibly do this.

That’s the mess I’m in with this story.  It’s on the same shelf as Project Phoenix. Do I go for serious story or do I make the move to go for a series of children’s short stories that resembles Pokemon?
