Songs to Fix My Mood?

It’s been a rough day that has culminated in me trying to convince a 4-year-old that it isn’t his birthday.  For now, I say ‘fuck it’ and he’ll forget about it tomorrow morning.  Anyway, I’m retaining some sanity with songs on my phone:

These are today’s songs
To help me through this rough day

Origins: Drusilia

Pirotess from Lodoss War

Pirotess from Lodoss War

This is a future character who might be showing up at the very end of Legends of Windemere.  She is the daughter of Queen Trinity, which doesn’t mean her mother lives or dies.  It only means her mother had sex.  By the time Drusilia walks into her own book, she’s the Chaos Elf Queen.  To be specific, she’s the one that kicks of the War of the Tainted and leads the good guys.  Redemption?  Probably because people have issues with the chaos elves even if they aren’t trying to kill everyone anymore.  She also has her mother’s defiance and magic, which makes her fun to write.

The origin of Drusilia is the D&D game that I ran in college.  I only had two players for the first game session, which was Reese the whore sorceress and Drusilia the Drow Monk (played by my wife).  Dru had the personality of an angry boulder.  She was abrasive and the quote ‘stupid Drow’ was uttered a lot.  This is why I increased her origin to being a ruler, falling from grace, and having a massive chip on her shoulder.  Part of the reason War of the Tainted is being written is to develop the rage and bitterness that Dru will have in The Elysium Saga.  It’s what she has to conquer and be able to trust again, which isn’t easy when your first ally is always insulting you.

I do feel strange making her another ‘strong, defiant female’ because I have Nyx and Mab the vampire in those roles.  Yet, there is a difference.  Nyx has a warmth toward others and Mab has a protective viciousness.  Drusilia is just angry and scared because someone she trusted more than anything took everything away.  I touch on this with characters like Sari and Aramil Thornsoul, but Dru seems to wallow in it.  The fact that she stays with a person that makes her feel bad seems oddly telling.  I hate to say she’s a depressing character and she doesn’t start that way.  That might be part of her fun.  Through her, I really get to toss a character off a cliff and see them drag themselves back.

Staring at the Screen

9:45I stare at the screen
Wishing to type
Making something for today
Beyond the scheduled fare
Yet my mind is clogged
With thoughts of the day
Another one of chaos

People hurry to get things done
I feel I’m always last to move
Never finishing
The tasks I set
Because someone has to lose
And I take my sweet ass time
Forgetting where I am

My nerves are wracked
I wish to rest
And think about what looms
Cover reveals and week of hype
The blog tour coming soon
A public chat with many voices
I have yet to think it through

So I stare at the screen
Hoping for ideas
On this day I’ll be pushed hard
Everyone has a place to be
Or work they ‘must’ get done
Finally getting time
When my mind and body aches

eranamage's avatarLibrary of Erana

I am delighted to welcome Walter Rhein to my blog, he is here to announce his forthcoming fantasy The Reader of Acheron. There is also the chance to win a free copy.  This writer has a lot of talent, look out for more of his work and add this title to your reading lists soon!

Fifty Free Fantasy Books!

Hey Folks!  In the next month Perseid Publishing will be releasing “The Reader of Acheron,” the first book in the Slaves of Erafor series.  Perseid is the Publishing house of Janet Morris of Thieves’ World Fame and we’re super excited about this book.

“Reader” is a heroic fantasy in a post-apocalyptic setting where slavery is commonplace and reading is outlawed.  It’s a dark fantasy novel with mature, ambitious themes.  Both Janet and I are really excited to get some feedback on it.  To that end, we’re giving away 50 copies…

Indie Author Tips: Marketing Your Book Without Crying

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

This is the second part of the Indie Author Tips duet.  This morning I discussed formatting, which is rather simple.  This afternoon I speak of marketing, which is a terrifying challenge.  If you’re an out-going person and have a skill for sales then you have a better chance than others.  Again, it helps to make friends with other indie authors and talk shop.

Let’s get right into it and show the tips:

  1. Social Media!!!  Use blogging, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Google+, Pinterest, Goodreads, and anything else that I’m forgetting.  Connect up as many of these as you can.  Though, I’d avoid the Twitter to Facebook combo if you have easily irritated friends.  My method has been to use my blog as a central hub for posting and sending things to the other.  I joined various Indie Author Promo groups on Facebook and make a morning and night advertising pitch on them.  I also try to post a Tweet about my books once every 3-4 hours.
  2. Find and use various advertising sites.  I could list them here, but I’ll put a link to the list that I maintain.  Each page has various services.  GO HERE!
  3. Hunt down author interviews and guest blogs.  A trick to the guest blogs is to offer a guest blog trade.  You write one for them and they write one for you.
  4. Create bookmarks, stickers, and business cards that you can hand out.  If you can find an event to set up a table with physical copies of your books then these other items can be used too.  Keychains might be handy as well and it doesn’t hurt to invest in a banner.
  5. Pinterest usage is interesting.  Make a pin of your book’s Amazon and Goodreads pages.  Try to do the same for other authors and hope the effort is returned.  A lot of what you will do at the beginning is about reciprocation.
  6. Twitter is an important tool.  Remember to use your hashtags (# words) that will draw people to your book.  For example, I use #fantasy, #kindle, #magic, #adventure, and others.  You can Tweet from two areas: your Amazon page to get that @Amazon connection and Twitter itself with a tiny url.  I suggest using both throughout the day.
  7. BE A HUMAN!   I see confusion, so let me explain.  Use your blog and social media to connect with people.  Blog about your experiences, talk about future projects, and just be approachable.  Try to make some interactive blogs like character interviews, asking for feedback, or contests.  People will be more interested in your stories if you’re more than the name on a book cover.  Even better, you’ll make some friends.
  8. Blog tours and cover reveals can help with future releases.  To help get support, offer to be part of these for other authors.
  9. Never respond to a negative review.  This is hard to learn and accept because many times you’ll want to defend yourself and your work.  Vent to a friend or write about it somewhere else.  This falls under this because you need to develop a reputation and brand.
  10. If you get yourself onto an Amazon Top 100 List, it will help your sales.  Include this information on your daily social media posts, but don’t give specific numbers.  Just say you’re on the list because you might be at a different number by the time someone checks it.  I suggest avoiding this if you’re in the 90’s because those can slip very quickly.

Indie Author Tips: Formatting Requires Patience

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

A few people have released books recently and I’ve been asked by a few people to talk about formatting and marketing.  Not sure why me, but I’ll be using today to touch on both topics.  We’re going to start with formatting.

Honestly, this is not as difficult as people think.  Many indie authors that have done this dance before will tell you this.  It’s only scary the first time because there are tricks you stumble into.  All it requires is patience and continually uploading, previewing, and fixing until you get it right.  That and finding an author who did it and getting them to help. Smashwords has a free eBook on formatting too.

Here are the big lessons I learned when formatting for Kindle:

  1. Amazon auto-tabs, so you don’t need to put tabs in your work.  This gets sticky because it reacts to EVERY tab.  I cleared this by doing a Find/Replace for them.  Find- ^t and Replace with nothing.  The ^t is Word’s symbol for a tab and if you put nothing in the Replace slot then it deletes all the ^t.
  2. You can set the indentation to Special: First Line and By: 0.3 to help with the tabs too.  You find this in the Paragraph options of Word.
  3. DO NOT use more than 4 ‘Enter/Return’ strikes in a row.  It causes trouble.  I never tested this to figure out what though.
  4. DO NOT use double-spaced lines.  1.5 works best.
  5. DO NOT use page breaks.  Use section breaks instead because that’s what the Kindle acknowledges.
  6. This link will tell you how to add a Table of Contents to your book.
  7. There may always be paragraphs that are screwy because Word is imperfect.  Easy to catch in short stories and smaller works, but difficult to find in bigger works.  Don’t panic if you find them later.  Fix and reupload, but try to get several issues at once.  Otherwise, you’ll go nuts.

There you have it.  My formatting tips.  Again, patience is key and you can learn a lot from those that came before you.  Just ask.

BLURB

As the War of 1812 approached, the Creek Indian Nation was in the middle of a civil war. They fought brutally between themselves, as well as with the white settlers who were encroaching upon tribal land.

It was during this time Elly’s family moved to the eastern Mississippi Territory for the promise of low-cost land and fertile soil. She had no idea they were moving into Creek territory – into the middle of a hornet’s nest.

Tafv’s band of warriors taunted them, stealing their property, killing their animals. Just when the family thought things couldn’t get any worse, during one of the Indian raids as Elly’s husband chased the…

Allure of the Gypsies Cover Reveal and Blog Tour

By Jason Pedersen

By Jason Pedersen

So, I’m going to continue my quest to find volunteers for the Legends of Windemere: Allure of the Gypsies promotional events.

Let me know if you’re interested in helping with the following:

Cover Reveal

This will be on November 25th and I will send you the Cover, Book Blurb, Release Date, and links to the previous books.  I can send this info to you now and you can schedule the post if you wish to participate.  Any time throughout that day would be fine, but it CANNOT go up before November 25th.

Blog Tour

This is the December event where you make a post directing people to my book’s Amazon site and I add you to a daily ‘check these books and blogs’ out.  I currently have 13 volunteers.

Twubs Chat

Still trying to figure out how to work this event, but it will be on November 30th for a few hours.  You get on Twitter and join the discussion.  Then, you get to ask any of my characters a question.  This is like my character interviews on in real-time and the entire cast is open for questions.

Let me know if you’re interested in being a part of any of these.  I’d greatly appreciate any help I can get.  Thanks.

Drite

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Dwellers of nature
Guardians of the wild
Unlike their giant bretheren
No fear is cast upon their head
Their wings flutter
Casting light upon their land
Friendly and curious
Yet dangerous if crossed
Many wonder where they thrive
And search for a kingdom
That only the drites have seen
