Origins: Drusilia

Pirotess from Lodoss War

Pirotess from Lodoss War

This is a future character who might be showing up at the very end of Legends of Windemere.  She is the daughter of Queen Trinity, which doesn’t mean her mother lives or dies.  It only means her mother had sex.  By the time Drusilia walks into her own book, she’s the Chaos Elf Queen.  To be specific, she’s the one that kicks of the War of the Tainted and leads the good guys.  Redemption?  Probably because people have issues with the chaos elves even if they aren’t trying to kill everyone anymore.  She also has her mother’s defiance and magic, which makes her fun to write.

The origin of Drusilia is the D&D game that I ran in college.  I only had two players for the first game session, which was Reese the whore sorceress and Drusilia the Drow Monk (played by my wife).  Dru had the personality of an angry boulder.  She was abrasive and the quote ‘stupid Drow’ was uttered a lot.  This is why I increased her origin to being a ruler, falling from grace, and having a massive chip on her shoulder.  Part of the reason War of the Tainted is being written is to develop the rage and bitterness that Dru will have in The Elysium Saga.  It’s what she has to conquer and be able to trust again, which isn’t easy when your first ally is always insulting you.

I do feel strange making her another ‘strong, defiant female’ because I have Nyx and Mab the vampire in those roles.  Yet, there is a difference.  Nyx has a warmth toward others and Mab has a protective viciousness.  Drusilia is just angry and scared because someone she trusted more than anything took everything away.  I touch on this with characters like Sari and Aramil Thornsoul, but Dru seems to wallow in it.  The fact that she stays with a person that makes her feel bad seems oddly telling.  I hate to say she’s a depressing character and she doesn’t start that way.  That might be part of her fun.  Through her, I really get to toss a character off a cliff and see them drag themselves back.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.
