Dinosaurs in Fantasy: Yes or No?

Yahoo Image Search

There’s an old debate in my life that goes back to college.  Not sure if other fantasy fans and gamers have this issue.  In some Dungeons & Dragons modules (pre-made adventures) and within the monster manual are dinosaurs.  So along with dragons, you have Tyrannosaurs Rex and Triceratops running around some regions.  There were times where we’d rather have a dragon to deal with than a T-Rex.

Now, the argument that came about in college was that dinosaurs have no place being in a fantasy world.  A world that is prehistoric Earth or an alternate Earth where they never died off is one thing.  An entirely different world with these creatures is something else entirely.  To be honest, I jump sides depending on how my brain is operating and which side seems the most fun to be on at the time.  It’s really personal preference if you think about, so lets look at both sides.

NO DINOSAURS

It’s a monster cop out because they’re naturally big and mean.  There’s no creativity behind tossing dinosaurs at heroes and nobody really knows what they looked like or acted like.  There’s a lot of unknowns about dinosaurs, which makes them a touchy subject.  One wrong piece of information and you’ll get reamed because people love dinosaurs.  You risk a lot of rage by using them.

The biggest argument that can be used against dinosaurs is that dragons exist.  Hear me out on this one.  Dragons are alpha predators and they’re infamously territorial.  They would eat a lot too and prey on big beasts when they go for meat.  Although, I always saw dragons as feeding off the magic in the environment and being slow to digest physical food.  Anyway, the two ultra reptiles would get into fights when they got near and that fight would typically go to the dragons.  You might be able to get away with the marine dinosaurs like Plesiosaur or Ichthyosaurs, but the land ones would certainly be an issue of space and dragon territory.

YES DINOSAURS

This is a simply argument, but it causes more anger for some reason.  In a world of fantasy there are horses, dogs, cats, and all other animals that you find in the real world.  There are the same plants and minerals too.  Heck, there are humans in these worlds.  So, it isn’t hard to consider the idea that there are a few dinosaurs around.  They might be rare and in specific areas away from the dragons, but they could very well exist.  The chance of them not going extinct is rather high since this isn’t Earth.  They might lose a lot of territory to the magical creatures, but they can have a niche in the world.  At the very least, the smaller dinosaurs could exist and not throw off a food chain.

So, what do people think of dinosaurs appearing in non-prehistoric-based fiction?  Can they be in fantasy?

Goals in Advance: Away for a Few Days

Andre the Giant

Andre the Giant

This is a goal post being made in advance because I’m away.  Many people might have noticed this for a few reasons.  Less activity than normal both in blogging and in promotional Tweets/FB posts.  That second one is probably driving me insane by now.  I’m writing this before I write then ‘I’m outta here’ post on Friday before I leave, so I have no idea at this time if I snapped beforehand and pathetically begged for people to mention my books over the weekend.

This is the first time I’ve been away with possibly iffy wifi or at least the inability to access things.  No blog commenting, sales checks, rankings checks, Tweets, FB posts, or any of the other activities that took up my days.  I’ve been WordPressing without fail since December 1st 2012 and promoting nearly every day since March 1st 2013.  This is like a total upheaval of my schedule and the version of me writing this post has no idea what current version is up to.  I assume curled in a ball crying over his iPhone while the toddler pats him on the head and members of the wife’s family look on in horror.  Maybe one of the dogs is involved.  Not sure if the lack of sales checks or the lack of promoting is what’s driving me nuts.  Then again, I might have found a way to check at least in the morning and night, so my current nervousness is unfounded.

Goals for the week!

  1. Get back to Long Island with sanity intact.  Praying that toddler behaved on first airplane flight and will repeat the good behavior on way down.
  2. Read more of The Crimson League.  Unless I finished it over the weekend.
  3. Outline more of War of the Tainted.  Unless I finished it over the weekend.
  4. Seriously get back to biking every morning.
  5. Continue resting and recharging for start of 7th book after Super Bowl.  Too many school meetings this month for me to focus.
  6. If sanity not intact: defeat Napoleon in chess and finally discover the secret to life, but only share it with the mouse who lives in my sock drawer.

Work in Progress: Footsteps . . . Maybe

Sun Ce, Sun Jian, Sun Quan

Sun Ce, Sun Jian, Sun Quan

One difficult thing with writing series is that it’s really hard to let characters go.  I dread the end of Legends of Windemere because I’ll feel a little lost without Luke, Nyx, and the others.  They’ll be done and usable only as cameos until the grand finale of everything.  Even it might not be the same.

I have pondered an answer to the dreaded melancholy for a few series.  This is where Footsteps came from.  I’m still not sure if I’m doing this, but the concept was to show what happens with the kids of my heroes.  You have to figure that they’ll have a lot to live up to or be targeted.  It also gives some closure to a few loose ends that might be around.  I really can’t go into full details with this because it would reveal who lives and who dies at the end of the series.

I had planned to do something similar for Darwin, Sin, and the Elysium Saga.  Those might change only because situations have been altered.  Darwin has 2 series and I can’t see him having kids.  Not incapable, but no matter what I can’t really get him to understand the concept of procreation.  The original story for the Footsteps: Sin idea became one of his books and I don’t think I want to torment him any more than I will in his series.  The Elysium Saga might still get one, but Legends of Windemere is the one where this started.

The truth is that I’m simply not sure what to do here.  There will be 9 kids coming out of the Legends of Windemere characters.  One story with all of them wouldn’t work and peppering these books throughout my career might reek of not letting go.  There is a plan that would undo the plot ideas for them.  Also, I have some of them appearing in the other series and working with those heroes, so maybe that’s enough.

So, fellow authors, do you think writing a series with the kids of heroes is something to work for or is it better to use them in other series?  Should I just carry on and see if something pops up when my back is turned?

Writing Tips: Details: Fantasy Transportation (Guest Post – Charles E. Yallowitz)

I have a guest post on Fantasy Transportation at Shannon A Thompson’s Blog. Give it a look and also check out her book ‘Minutes Before Sunset’.

Shannon A Thompson's avatarShannon A. Thompson

Shannon, here, for an introduction:

If you checked out my last post, then you know about my new series: “Writing Tips: Details: ____.” I will be periodically posting about the little things – how to choose something like a wardrobe for your character. Last time, I spoke about vehicles, and that’s when Charles E. Yallowitz blew me away in the comments. As a high fantasy writer, he doesn’t deal with cars, but he still took the time to see the correlations between the cars and other transportation methods he has had to decide. By broadening the discussions, I knew he had to have his own slot – his own posting – and I offered him today’s place. Below you will read tips from Charles E. Yallowitz – and who knows? – maybe your added commentary will be the next one chosen to keep the discussion going.

Sort of Good-Bye For A Bit

First of all, you can see from the ‘Before/After’ pictures that I got my haircut.  I was also told by my barber that I really have to stop waiting so long.  In my defense, it was cold outside and I’m an idiot.

Second of all, I’m heading out for a weekend trip in a few hours.  This isn’t really a vacation since there are some somber reasons for going.  Not going into details.  This will be a hectic trip though.  Toddler’s first time on an airplane, first time through airport security, first time seeing some of the long-distance family, first time in a big bed, and maybe a few more firsts there.  My focus will be on him a lot this trip, but there’s another wrinkle in here:

The motel does not have free wifi!

Homer Simpson- The Man, The Myth, The Cartoon

Homer Simpson- The Man, The Myth, The Cartoon

So, I’m not going to be around that much.  At least wait until I leave before starting the party!

I’ll be using any free wifi catches that I get to handle email and respond to comments on my blog.  All of my posts have been scheduled, including the weekly goal post, which I wrote a few days ago in a different mindset.  Ever since the WordPress App on my iPhone decided to epically fail, I can’t do much here without my laptop and lack of wifi hurts that.  Getting to my own blog comment notification takes several screams and a twitchy interface.  So, I won’t be liking or commenting while I’m gone, which I apologize for.  As it stands, I will have to find a way to get on here come Saturday to reblog a guest post on the blog of Shannon A. Thompson.  It’ll be about fantasy transportation and that’s going to be the extent of my non-comment posting.  Maybe the motel has a computer in the lobby that I can use.  Got lucky with that in June.

The other thing that is going to be a test of my patience and sanity is that I won’t be able to do any marketing.  NO TWEETS!  NO RETWEETS!  NO FACEBOOK POSTS!  I don’t even know if I can check my numbers and ranks while I’m away.  For anyone that knows more or has seen Ionia tease me about my addiction to my book numbers, you know that this might be the equivalent of quitting cold turkey.  I might be able to slip a few sales checks in to help explain my success to family members, but I definitely won’t be able to do promo work. I know there’s Hootsuite, but it doesn’t cover all my FB groups and seems to be giving me the cold shoulder with Tweets.  No idea why I don’t have the time to figure it out.

Sooooooooooo . . . If anybody wants to  make a blog post, tweet, or FB post about one of the Legends of Windemere books over the weekend, I’d greatly appreciate the help.  I think that covers my panicky shill quota of the post.

Hope everyone has a fun and relaxing weekend.  If anybody really needs to get in contact with me then shoot me an email.  Yup . . . I’ll just leave some music videos and I’m out of here a few hours:

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

Fritz Warrenberg is a fun character to write and I wish I could boost him higher up the character food chain.  The truth is that he is strongest as a supporting character and shines in this role.  He is the brains, humor, heart, and curiosity of the heroes with a few interesting themes. Anxious Author at Dinner

I am so close to done
Yet it is time to eat
I left cooking for the others
Which has put me at their whim
Breakfast burned off
Lunch was scarce
Now dinner is a gorge
At rapid pace to hold the muse
Fearing she will leave
I was on a roll
The scene spinning from my fingers
I wish to escape the table
Not noticing what I eat
As long as I am fed
My god I hate this food
Guess I cook tomorrow

Swearing to eat at noon
Maybe some heated pizza
Or step out for meatball sub
Chinese is down the block
There are soups within the cupboard
Just need to finish this final line

Guess it is scraps again
