So the third installment of the Legends of Windemere series and I was very excited to dive into it!

***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***

I will admit I am still a little sad that Nimby and Fritz are gone from the series, but Nyx and Sari are an excellent addition to the story and they really work well as a team with Luke.

The author did an amazing job by phasing out the old characters and introducing the new ones. We also get an interesting look into Luke’s family and his home town and we also find out just why Luke was in the forest that day he came across the Paladin who was dying and gave him the orders to report to the academy. That was really awesome! I love when authors give us the back story of characters we love and find out where they came from and how they…

In Regards to the Last Post! Rant and Scenarios!

After getting a few emails and it was brought up in a phone call, I’m going to point something out about the last post:

It is a possibility and not set in stone!

What you see is the scenario that would lead to a Kira Grasdon book.  It involves either Kira being the sole survivor or Sari dying and Luke choosing to be alone.  I have plans for Luke being the only survivor, Sari surviving to get Luke, Sari surviving to lose Luke, Kira surviving to get Luke, and all 3 dying.  The truth is that the ‘Kira lives and alone’ is the story I put up there.  Here are the other scenarios:

Luke Only Survivor–  Plagued by guilt and wanders away from his friends becoming a nameless adventurer.  Returns for a later adventure when his old friends are in trouble.

Sari Only Survivor– Wanders in search of ways to distract herself, but stays in contact with all the old friends.  Focuses a lot on trying to be a hero like Luke and carries his sabers, which she trains to use.  Pulled into a quest that can lead to her choosing between reviving Luke or Kira, but not both.

Sari/Luke Survive & Break Up– They go for cameos where both are wanderers.  Sari is angry and Luke feels guilty.  An adventure happens where they are forced to work together and get a second chance.  Either they take that chance or they end being friends.

Luke/Kira Survive & Stay Together– They marry and settle down to become cameos.  Name a child after Sari who goes on future adventures.

Kira/Sari Survive– They bond over their shared loss and go into business together.  Kira runs the main merchant house while Sari gets clients and product.  Both appear in stories that involve trading and ancient relics.

Luke/Sari Survive & Stay Together– Same thing as Luke/Kira together, but they travel and name a child after Kira.  With help from Sari and any other surviving champions, Luke maintains the Grasdon Merchant House.

All 3 Die–  A lot of grief, memorials, and ghost cameos if it works for a story.

There we go, people!  All possible scenarios for these characters and there can be even more.  Only other thing I’m going to say is that it isn’t that it happens, but the how and why.  Authors reveal that a character might die whether by name or hint all the time.  So please calm down and enjoy the books that have PLENTY of twists coming.  Trying hard not to be annoyed here, but I got 3 more messages complaining about spoilers since I started writing this post.

Quest of the Broken-Hearted (Possible Spoilers?)

By Kayla Matt

By Kayla Matt

I can say that only know of 3 characters who are confirmed to survive Legends of Windemere.  The rest are still up in the air, which has left me with having to create alternate endings.  One such ending can lead to a stand-alone book that gives a character closure if she survives: Kira Grasdon.

I will say that at least 1 person will die in the Sari/Luke Callindor/Kira Grasdon love triangle.  At least as things stand right now, so I have plans for Windemere to continue in each scenario.  If alive, Luke and Sari would join the other surviving champions as cameos in future series.  Maybe even together.  As for Kira, I have two paths if she survives.  One is that she marries Luke and joins him on the cameo circuit.  The other is that she doesn’t get Luke and plunges into darkness.  Hence, that story being called ‘Quest of the Broken-Hearted’.

Princess Farah from Prince of Persia

Princess Farah from Prince of Persia

I’ve been playing with this idea for years because I love the Kira Grasdon character.  I love Sari and Luke too, which is why the love triangle drives me nuts when I’m writing scenes about it. Anyway, I see her losing everything and simply checking out on life in the scenario where she is alone.  There are in-book reasons that she’s going to fall like this and I won’t go into those (BOOK 7!).  In fact, I have her slated to become a brothel girl in Gaia simply to survive.  This really isn’t the story, but a show that at this point, Kira will have absolutely nothing.

Now, I was playing two games when I designed the current version of Kira Grasdon.  One was Prince of Persia, which is why she’s from the desert and resembles Princess Farah instead of Princess Peach (Super Mario Bros). The other is Castlevania, which involves a whip-wielding vampire hunter going after Dracula.  This is where the Kusari-Gama came from and where the basis of her story appears.

Having nothing to lose and being depressed, she heads on an adventure after hearing about the evil city of Lacarsis.  It is home to thousands of monsters and it moves around the continent of Ralian.  Nobody gets out alive and there’s been a big rise in attempts to destroy it.  Kira heads off to try her hand and finds that it’s not what she expected. The demon lord treats the adventurers as guests and challenges them to defeat various monsters for entertainment.  Think gladiators without a central arena because sneak attacks happen.

This would give an early introduction to Rayne who is a servant given to Kira during her time there.  She gets a few life-saving ideas from Rayne and tells her about the outside world since she’s been in Lacarsis since she was a baby.  There’s also Roland from Beginning of a Hero who might make an appearance as an example of those who challenge Lacarsis and fail.

If this happens then it will focus a lot on Kira acting self-destructive and possibly finding a new reason to exist.  Though, it could also be nothing more than an epic sendoff for one of my favorite characters.

Check out a debut fantasy novel!

Darcy Branwyn's avatarOlivia Stocum Romance Fiction

The absolutely awesome Katie cross has released her first novel, a YA fantasy, Miss Mabel’s School for Girls.

MMSFG_Logo_Only_325x220 (1)

<BEEP> THIS HAS BEEN A TEST OF THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM. IF THIS HAD BEEN AN ACTUAL EMERGENCY, YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD TO HEAD DIRECTLY TO AMAZON TO BUY MISS MABEL’S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS>

Oh, go over there and buy it anyway!

It’s not like it’s the Zombie Apocalypse and you don’t have time to read because your too busy trying to stay alive. (or dead as the case may be)

Here’s what it looks like. So, you don’t mistake it for something else. (You know, something not nearly as cool that might disappoint you, then causing you to write your first ever one star review, that then has the author calling the police and having a restraining order put out against you. I mean, you wouldn’t want THAT, now would you?)

Return of the Dead Horse

Somehow, I keep ending up in conversations about Amazon rankings.  I know my recent breaking into the teens opened me up to this. I was #16 on the Sword & Sorcery list for an hour.  Then #18 again for another hour.  I’m back in the #30s only 2 days later and the book is still selling at the same rate.  Shows how fickle things are at least with the Fantasy Genre, which is what brings me to the real point of this post:

If you spend more time trying to crack the Amazon Ranking algorithm than writing your next book or promoting your current book then you have a problem.

I see it everywhere and I’m tired of the conversation because I’ve accepted that I have no idea how it works.  Honestly, I’ve gotten more joy and success as an author by writing my stories than analyzing the data.  All I know is that I did something right to get up there and I’ve seen other people do the same with different tactics.  There’s no magic behind it and you hurt yourself by obsessing over the details.  Seriously, you would benefit more by promoting and writing than investigating the inner works of Amazon.  I’m sure many will disagree with me, but if it was possible to find a foolproof way to #1 in any genre then somebody would have figured it out by now.

Call me an idiot if you want, but I’m an idiot who is done stressing over the rankings.  I’ll be openly excited if I come close to a high rank and give reports to show I’m succeeding. I still feel like sharing my good fortune with everyone who supports me.  Yet, I’ve seen my writing suffer a bit this week while I was watching Family of the Tri-Rune bounce around the lists.  Maybe it’s time for me to grow up in that respect and say that it’s just a number and I’ll do my best to excel.  Just not at the cost of my future books.

Resurrection of Characters

A common quest in fantasy series is the concept of ‘Resurrection’.  A hero has fallen and the remaining warriors go to revive him.  The main villain has been killed and there is now a plan to bring him back to life through a dark ritual.  The funny thing is that a lot of people groan about this quest.  It’s almost like you can’t win if you kill a character off because people will be upset if they stay dead and others will be upset if you bring them back.  Others will get annoyed if you refuse to kill anyone off.  Let’s face it: death in fiction is a heavy burden for the author, especially if the story continues after the character in question is killed.

So, how can you kill a character and have a suitable ‘resurrection’?  There are many methods that you can use and here are four of the easier ones:

Ghost

If it’s good enough for Obi Wan Kenobi then it’s good enough for nearly everybody. A ghost can be used in multiple ways. Either as a mentor or an enraged spirit that has it in for former allies.  This isn’t a true resurrection because the character remains dead through the events.  An alternate of this is a zombie that can appear randomly or enslaved to the opposing side.

Miracle Max from Princess Bride

Mostly Dead

A funny thing in fantasy is that average characters aren’t always the best at telling when someone is dead.  At least without a clear wound.  I refer you to the picture and video above for more explanation of the details.  Plots like this can result in a quest for an item to revive their fallen ally or they’re forced to leave the afflicted behind.  The character is removed from the story with an opening to return if people want it.  Yes, this is the ‘in a coma’ storyline.

No Body

There’s a rule in fiction: No body, no confirmation of death.  Though, I think there are a few real world jobs that this refers to also.  A character might fall into an abyss and everyone assumes he or she is dead.  Then the character returns later and explains a harrowing survival.  Best example would be Gandalf in Lord of the Rings.  I will warn you that this is a trick that you probably only want to do once in a short series.  Twice is a possibility on a long series, but you have to be careful.

Rebirth Ritual

A character truly dies and is somehow reborn through a ritual.  This is typically a villain approach when a main villain or top minion dies.  Normally, this takes up an entire book and there’s an established system of magic to support this.  If there has been no magic or ritualistic ceremonies in the world then it’ll be harder to rationalize this.  A very important part of the Rebirth Ritual is that you need a combination of components, a rare item, and a special location.  This isn’t something that should be accomplished with kitchen ingredients in the living room.

Can you think of any other resurrection methods?

From the Vault: Magic Beans

Darwin had a bag of beans
Each with a special gift
The red beans made him super strong
The green beans made him tall
The blue beans made him like a fish
The yellow beans gave him wings
The orange beans would keep him warm
The purple beans made him full
The white beans turned him into gas
The brown beans forged his skin of stone
The pink beans gave him icy breath
The black beans made him Death
He used these beans to survive his trials
And cause mischief in his wake
For the owner of the magic beans
Is cursed to never sleep

From the Vault: Bedroom Shadows

Chittering noises
From the closet depths
And under beds
Disguised as wind
Or settling wood

The monsters wait
Kept at bay
By blankets
And a tiny light
Jutting from the wall

Spindly legs
Tap the shadow fringe
Searching for a flaw
While hidden eyes
Lock onto sleeping prey

Tempting whispers
Made from desperation
A feeble attempt
To coax the child
From her linen shield

The child stays safe
While the monsters fail
Going hungry once again
Forced to slumber
By the blazing sun

From the Vault: Apprentices

Chosen by their thirteenth year
To follow in a master’s steps
They wave farewell to youth and home
While preparing for their tasks
Some will sweat among the anvils
While others ache within the woods
Many learn of herbs to cook
Or heal those that fall to pain
Warriors and thieves will grow
From those that find these paths
The lucky ones will find the tower
Where magic is their trade
All will grow to be true masters
And earn apprentices of their own
