A Week of Nada?

So ‘The Mercenary Prince’ is done and waiting for its turn on the editing block.  This is a book set to be released in December, which means I’ll be sending the March/April release to my editor.  Another week before I ask Jason about the cover art too.  That means I have very little to do here besides cleaning in preparation for the annual Super Bowl party next Sunday.  Some special guests might be here too.

I will be outlining the next two books since their stories have been altered a bunch due to events in the latest completion.  There’s a notebook idea that I’m toying with too, but I ran into a problem already.  It’s slated for 2 books and I think I can chop out some stuff to make it a stand alone.  This does alter a few things like the amount of villains and part of the scope.  The first book was going to be an adventure and the second a looming war that the ‘hero’ has to stop.  That second book was rather flimsy.  Maybe a day of thinking without any other pressure will help.  I have a week since I won’t be tackling Book 10 until February.

Odd thing is that with the completion of this idea in the notebook, I get to move on to a clean one.  There’s still going to be space that I gradually add into for the ‘Grand Finale’ of Windemere.  Just listing heroes and villains who have enough impact to be a focus on the great battle.  Originally, I wanted everyone to be involved as long as they survived their story.  This might change since I have some stories that don’t fit that.  They might join all the heroes for the last push though.  It’s a tough idea and I can’t even discuss it because it would reveal who lives and dies in all of the series.

For anyone who missed it, I have an AUTHOR WEBSITE!  It’s to make any big announcements like upcoming releases and catch the attention of people who aren’t in the blogosphere.  It’s going to be a work in progress for a while as I learn more tricks.  No idea how to discover traffic, but it is a comfort to have another toe in the Internet waters.  Since I lost a bunch of marketing avenues last year to sites closing or discovering that they simply didn’t work for me, I’m finding myself at a loss on what to do.  I do interviews at times and hunt for guest blogs, but I’m in that mentality where all I want to do is write and step away from what I’m calling the ‘monkey dancing’ side of being an author.  Not easy to do when I have a book that isn’t even 2 months old and has slowed to a pitiful crawl even with marketing.  Fate of a series author.  I think I have a post about that coming up in a week or two.  Guess a week of busy work won’t hurt to get my head together.

So what am I going to do?

  1. Final outline for ‘Tribe of the Snow Tiger’ and ‘Charms of the Feykin’.  First one will be easier than the second.
  2. Work more on ‘Sutyra’.  The solution is on the tip of my brain too.  Then I’ll decide which path I’ll choose for the next notebook.  One of my heroes has been horribly ignored for a year since he’s in a different ‘track’ than the others.
  3. Clean house for party.
  4. Bike or sleep in.
  5. Watch more of ‘D.Gray-Man’.  Got the first 2 seasons.  Not sure what to watch after those though.
  6. Write a future blog post or two.  Still no idea what to write about here any more.  Hate to say I’m burning out on WordPress, but it feels that way.  I know if I take a break then it’ll be really hard to come back too.  Think the winter chill is assisting my sense of melancholy.
  7. Uncover only one secret of the universe and lose the information in the laundry.
  8. Ponder more of Project Phoenix (tempted to about this one again) and find the list of the 30+ story ideas.  Might want to see if any of them are dead in the water again.  Hate to admit it, but ‘Zombie Girl’ seems to be faltering even more than before.  ‘Yum Tum Tavern’ is in the same boat, but the main character shows up in another series.  Honestly, I’m not even sure what the story on either of these are any more.

#Read #Authors: Keep It Real! by Jaq D Hawkins

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

218599Ever since the indie publishing explosion, I’ve been watching the adjustments in marketing that have tried to keep up with a rapidly changing industry.

To put things in perspective, I started out as a traditionally published author in the late 1980s and decided to cross the line into indie publishing in 2012. I was a little late to the party, which really started in 2009 and was going strong through 2010-11, but I came from a tradition where self-publishing was considered the realm of the unpublishable and old attitudes die hard.

I started studying the business of writing when I was very young and even in high school, I knew how to format a proper manuscript, what was expected when approaching a publisher and how to put together a press pack. However, the rules all changed with indie publishing. Even the definition of ‘publisher’ has changed. Once a small publisher…

New Website is Up, Running, and Still Evolving

Cover Art Teaser by Jason Pedersen

My Author Site is Live!

As you can see by clicking above, I now have an author website.  It won’t be updated as often as the blog and we’re still working on additions.  I’m only allowed 5 pages, so we can only do so much there.  The big thing will be using it to announce upcoming releases.  As I said, really simple and it’ll evolve as I do.

One section I’m still working on is the ‘Excerpt’ page.  It’s going slow for 2 reasons:

  1. MINOR REASON: Haven’t figured out how to put the documents up there without making a mess.
  2. MAJOR REASON: I have no idea which excerpts to take.  Just one from each published book is the plan and maybe one from the next one in the series.  Hard to figure out if you’re avoiding spoilers and wanting to keep things interesting.

Anyway, that was the big secret project that I worked on all of yesterday and this morning.  Give it a look and enjoy your weekend.

Why Do You Do It? (Character Question)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Fizzle– No understand question.  Why do what?

Luke Callindor–  I think they want to know why we’re heroes instead of villains or settling into a simple life.  I’m trying to be a hero because it runs in the family, I want to help as many people as I can, and it’s what I’ve always wanted to be.

Nyx–  Some of us didn’t have a choice.  Raised to fight the darkness over here.

Sari–  Then shouldn’t you be the leader?

Nyx–  Do we really have a leader?  It’s whoever knows what they’re doing at the time.

Fizzle–  Delvin leader?

Delvin Cunningham–  I’m just the tactician and I’m a hero because . . . I don’t think I really have a reason.  It just kind of happened and I chose to help others instead of shying away from my path.  It has been hinted that other champions have turned away from their destiny, so this isn’t something written in stone.

Luke–  Actually, I think Gabriel really did write the destiny in stone.  *ducks spell*  I was only making a joke, Nyx.

Sari–  That was me.  Tried to turn your hair bright orange.  Anyway, I’m not a hero.  I just help my friends because they helped me.  At least I don’t feel very heroic even when I’m fighting.

Timoran Wrath–  That might be what makes you a hero.  Unlike Luke, you have no interest in the title of hero, so you do not concern yourself with the details.  You simply do what you feel is right like I do.

Delvin–  I’m there too.  This sounds like we’re being mean to Luke and Nyx who have different reasons.

Nyx–  I’m noticing.

Trinity–  I’m a hero to my people because I suffer alongside them and keep myself between them and the Baron.  So even villains can have noble reasons and be considered a hero by some people.

Luke–  I think that’s a topic for next week.  Anyway, I do want to help others like the rest of you.  Guess I have a bunch of reasons.  This question is actually a lot harder when you think about it.

Sari–  It’s different for everyone too.

Fizzle–  Hero one who help others.

Timoran–  That is the simple definition and it works.  Honestly, a true hero cannot easily define their reasons.  Not in our world anyway.  Maybe it is truly up to those we help if we are worthy of the title or not.

What makes Nonlocal Science Fiction different?

Built from the ground up to function as a dynamic digital publication, Nonlocal partners with its authors directly and offers them a share of the profits from the sale of the magazine rather than a per-word rate that minimizes the value of a story submission.

Nonlocal involves its authors in a comprehensive digital marketing campaign which benefits the authors directly both by increasing sales and by giving independent authors valuable marketing knowledge and experience.

PS – Pre-made Book Covers

jorobinson176's avatarJo Robinson

I’ve started loading book covers for sale on my new Pre-made Book Covers tab at the top there. I must admit that it’s quite nerve wracking, but never mind, I love making them so it’s very unlikely that I’ll stop now.

All of them are made with my own photos or sketches so far. I might use stock or public domain pictures in the future, but only ever for very small elements or manipulated to totally individual works. I’ve resized them for web use, so I’m wondering about the visual quality as they are, so I’ll tack on a very high resolution image here just in case anyone thinks the web size is a bad idea. Hopefully easy to see. I’m working on a haunted house cover at the moment – love it – but only in between the scribbling and editing. I’d really love it if anyone has any…

So You Wanna Kill a Character?

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

I was going to be serious and some of these suggestions will be in that category.  Yet I find myself in a silly mood, which means we’ll see what happens.  So what are some things to consider when killing off a main character?

  1. Make sure the readers will care.  If a central character dies and there’s no reaction then something went wrong.  Maybe you forgot to include them in the previous parts of the book?  Perhaps you forgot to explain what the character’s purpose was besides getting shanked in the giblets.  Either way, you might want some beta readers to make sure this doesn’t happen.
  2. Have it be memorable.  Nobody likes a forgettable death scene.
  3. Have it be simple.  Only so many ‘life story’ speeches a character can do with a gaping chest wound.  Unless they’re in a Metal Gear game and then they seem to have all the time in the damn world.
  4. Irony can be fun when killing a villain.  Though I might be thinking of blatant foreshadowing too.  I can’t quite remember what irony is exactly because I’m part of the generation who listened to a popular song that muddied the term.
  5. Sacrificial deaths are great, but don’t overdo them.  Also make sure the sacrifice is real and important.  For example, don’t have a character run the bomb into the enemy forces that are invading a space station when the others are standing near a button that decouples the parts that the enemy has taken.  Just hit the damn button.
  6. You don’t have to kill a character to make them suffer.  Villains seem to enjoy torturing and it can be more interesting to see a character rise from the ashes.  After all, dead characters don’t evolve.
  7. Be careful resurrecting characters and establish the possibility beforehand.  Don’t do it if the only reason is because readers are mad at you.
  8. Please make sure people know a character is dead, especially villains during the climactic fight scene.  If the reader has to ask you if that was a death blow or wonder where the bad guy went, you slipped up somewhere.  Of course, this can be ignored if your intention is to leave the character’s fate a mystery.
