Toss This One in the First Draft Pile!

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist

After a 3-day weekend of struggling to get to Book 9, I finally tackled it.  The character is dead, the heroes have been given their wrap up scene, and I only have to do the one for the villains to set everything up for Book 10.  That’ll take an hour or two, which will happen after the kid goes to sleep.  So I’m calling this one done.

This means I get to relax tomorrow.  Get a haircut, have some pizza, enjoy this anime I bought called D-Grayman, and think about the project I’m starting on Thursday.  This isn’t a book, but something writer-based.  Got some help since it’s something new and it might take the rest of the week to figure out.  I won’t be tackling Book 10 until February because things get hectic here leading up to the Super Bowl.  Also want to relax for a bit and sort through some outlines.

Honestly, I’m golden for my yearly goals if I get Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue published and Book 10-11 written before school is out.  Summer will be bogged down with family events and trips, so I’ll only be able to do editing during that period.  What little time I have will be geared toward prepping Merchant of Nevra Coil for publishing in the summer.  Unless something goes horribly wrong.

I  know this is a risky question given, but the special project might include an excerpt from each book.  I’m trying to decide on which one to do.  It’s hard to pick a scene that will entice and reveal the book without showing spoilers.  So I’m always open to suggestions if people have a favorite scene.  If anything, it might trigger my desire for something else, so you never know what will happen.

Anyway, I’m off to cook dinner and get my mind ready for a low key day tomorrow.  I might even drag it into Thursday and sleep in.  Not like the special project has a deadline.

Return of Boromir, We Hardly Knew Ye

Death of Boromir

Death of Boromir

Way back on January 30th, 2103, I wrote a posted entitled ‘Boromir, We Hardley Knew Ye‘.  This was two months after I started blogging so I got no comments and very few likes on it.  It was about killing characters and I wrote it while having only 3 books written under my belt.  I would go on to create a few more death scenes and now I’m on the verge of doing it again.  Or I already did it because this is a scheduled post and I ended up getting more writing time than I expected.  Either way, a character has gone the way of so many others.  I wonder if my opinion on this matter has changed.  Wait while I read the old post:

DUM DA DUM BA DUM DUM LA DE DA

I was all over the place there.  Now I do realize that it isn’t wrong to mention that a character will die in a book.  That’s my choice to announce as long as I don’t give a name or specifics.  After proving that I’m in trouble no matter what I do, I should do whatever I feel is right.  Besides, I’ve declared several times over the years that I’m going to kill characters from time to time.  Not at the rate that some people have wanted, which would mean I’d have an entirely new cast by the fifth book.  Seriously, that’s just bloodthirsty and doesn’t help in creating series long character arcs.

This is becoming a revisit post because I had no idea how people would react to the death of a character.  When I finally did finish off a character, I expected some type of reaction, but not the messages that I made people cry.  Thankfully, there was no rage.  Only sadness, questions about resurrection, and requests for prequels that showcased the deceased.  It is interesting how people react to such a thing, especially when they can get the ear of the author.  Some characters earn cheers while others drive readers to almost beg for a rewrite that returns their favorite to life.  Who would have thought reading could be such a dangerous hobby?

So now I prepare for writing the death scene or focusing on the one that may occur in the next book.  The further I delve into Legends of Windemere, the more I have to start cutting down characters.  I still haven’t decided who out of the Big 7 will make it out of the final battle.  One has already been slated for a death scene while another two are being considered.  I wonder how many people will try to guess or make a wish in their head about who lives and who dies in this series?  Either way, I’m sure to have some people upset.

So what do you think about character deaths?

Symbolism and thoughts on short story ‘Chained Freedom’ by Natasja Hellenthal

Chained Freedom Coverfinal1

“This is not a fairytale, but a true story,” storyteller Tana Woodwolf tells the audience at the start of ‘Chained Freedom’.

This is some more information, symbolism and random thoughts about ‘Chained Freedom’, a thought-provoking fantasy. I’ve written the story some years ago whilst being stuck in a rather, suffocating relationship. I always had the choice to step out sooner than I did, but I didn’t feel ‘free’ enough, or ‘ready’ enough, or even ‘strong’ enough to do so but moreover full of guilt.
Instead, I wrote this story, as all my stories are based on my own life and experiences to some degree. I’m not Tana, mind you, but I feel like I know her really well!
But it’s not just relationships, of any kind, we can relate this story to, and apply it to our lives; it’s any kind of loss of freedom really. Freedom; everyone’s…

Publisher Feature: DJD Digital Press

From the blog of Nicholas C. Rossis, author of science fiction, the Pearseus epic fantasy series and children's books

For the first time, I’m interviewing not an author, but a publisher. Daniel J. Dombrowski owns the DJD Digital Press – aka 33rd Street Press. He defines it as a new kind of publishing partner, which sounds rather intriguing.

Dan kindly reached out to me after reading The Power of Six, my collection of short science fiction stories, to ask me if I’d be interested in submitting a short story to his upcoming magazine, Nonlocal Science Fiction. I soon became enthusiastic about the endeavor, and thought it would be interesting to showcase his approach to publishing; an approach I personally find refreshing.

Oh, and yes, he is publishing my short story in the magazine, so yay! 🙂

The Usual

Hi, Dan! Great to have you here. First of all, is it the Daniel J. Dombrowski Digital Press, or the 33rd Street Press?

The formal name for the company…
