As you may know, I have a great deal of respect for the talent of Charles E, Yallowitz. He is a prolific writer of prose and poetry and has a marvelous sense of humor. We were discussing a guest post in support of the launch of his latest book The Mercenary Prince and I casually suggested that he do a Top Ten Things Not to Do list. To my surprise and delight, he did one. This is a list that made me laugh out loud and decided to run it on my regular feature day. I think you will enjoy it and know you would like Charles’ fantasy stories. So here is Charles and his list.

Thank you to John W. Howell for hosting this guest post, which I hope is entertaining.  I step into the realm of the master with a ‘Ten Things’ list that…

Good News, Other News, & Question News: All to the Void!

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

My blog has been very quiet this week beyond the Questions 3 and Sue Vincent‘s amazing guest blog.  Not sure if it’s the Ask-a-Character or something else.  So I’m sticking this post at the top for a bit to get a few more reactions.  Mostly on items 2 and 3.

Good News

Legends of Windemere: The Mercenary Prince has broken 100 sales.  This is a ray of sunshine since the lists are hard to maneuver these days.  Still sitting on #40 of the Men’s Adventures as of this post’s writing.  Anyway, this is the bit of good news that I wanted to share.

Other News

I figured out the chapter title that was giving me trouble.  It involves Battle Mountain, NV where they have to earn money through gladiator fights.  I kept thinking of the violence aspect, the location, and the gold.  Then I just thought of the word Gladiator and got:

Are They Not Entertained!?

This is a slight variation on the ‘Are you not entertained?’ from the movie ‘Gladiator’.  I was thinking of making it ‘Lloyd’ instead of ‘They’, but I thought it unfair since Cassidy doesn’t have a chapter title.  Then again, I might make the next one ‘Cassidy vs Reno’ and put Lloyd back in this one.  Have until hitting publish before it becomes permanent.

Question News

With Crossing Bedlam nearly done being edited and on its way to being published in February, I was thinking of the future.  This comes down to a few questions that I’m going to write below.

First, is anyone willing to help promote Crossing Bedlam in February?  I have 3 volunteers so far and would really appreciate the help.

Second, I did a successful world searching thing last year.  I do a lot of world building and not everything goes into the books.  Other times people have questions about the world or characters that I never considered or is not story central.  This is where the blog can give more insight, but only if I know what people are wondering.  Again, this is about the world and characters instead of me and my process.  For example, asking why there are diseases in Windemere if there are magic healers.

These would be for March and beyond, but I’ll put two categories down here:

  1. What do you want to know about Windemere and/or its characters?
  2. What do you want to know about the Shattered States and/or its characters?

Thanks and hopefully this can bring about some fun for all involved.  Now back to editing if the kid lets me.

Schedule Hell, Week of WTF, & I Just Stubbed My Toe

First, I feel like I’ve been running around or scrambling to do stuff since I woke up.  I forgot breakfast and figured I’d grab lunch after dropping the kid off at his gymnastics class.  That didn’t happen and I have a good reason.  The parking lot was full, so I had to park on the street.  My car was pointing toward him instead of any place to grab food and I didn’t want to do a U-Turn.  Don’t worry though.  I think I saw a small sourdough pretzel somewhere around here.

This feels like the theme of the week.  Started strong with my editing game and Wednesday had everything fall apart.  Not really sure how it happened either.  The kid was back in school, which meant homework when he got home.  That wasn’t much of a problem.  The wife had a temp job for a few days, which meant fewer people around the house.  Except it also meant that I was alone to get the kid ready for school and also had to wake up early enough to pester her to move.

Still no idea how things imploded.  I factored in that there was going to be one rough day, but I actually got more done on that day than Wednesday.  Not much blog activity because Ask-A-Character stuff is apparently a stupid idea.  Had some indigestion issues, but nothing crippling.  It really feels like something just went wrong, which doesn’t sit well with me because 2016 is already going to be a headache.  Here’s the facts:

  • Charles wants to write 5-6 works this year. 3 Windemere, 1 Ichabod, 1 Raven, & 1 Bedlam
  • Charles wants to publish 5-6 works this year.  3 Windemere, 1 Ichabod, & 1-2 Bedlam.
  • Charles needs to edit all of these & possibly do one of them from scratch.
  • Son has 1 full week off in February.
  • Son has 5 day weekend in March.
  • Son has 1 full week off in April.
  • Son might be off for summer.
  • Wife will hopefully be working.
  • Might be 2 family trips this year that could last from a week to a weekend each.
  • Phone will NOT STOP FUCKING RINGING!
Dr. Cox from Scrubs

Dr. Cox from Scrubs

Needless to say, I’m under stress already and feeling like this is a year where I might not meet many goals.  All of that doesn’t consider promoting books, sleeping, eating, showering, biking, smaller breaks for the kid, and God help me if I get sick.  Keep in mind that I’ve been told that this is the ‘Make or Break’ year to prove I can make a living with the writing.  Yeah.  I’m feeling like I signed up for a marathon, but somebody broke my leg as I got to the starting line.  I can limp along, but I don’t see myself reaching the end without doing more damage.  Jury is still out on if I want to do that and I know I’m going to get people telling me not to BLAH BLAH BLAH.  Sadly, I don’t have the luxury of taking things easy.

I’m hating these weekly updates lately.  I have nothing good to say and it keeps boiling down to the same stuff about feeling trapped.  Think part of it is because new wrinkles show up every week.  I took 1.5 months off from writing and now I’m back.  I need to figure out a schedule to work around these breaks.  For example, I can’t tackle Book 13 of Legends of Windemere until after the February break.  That leaves me with Ichabod and Raven, but I’m not really sure about the second.  Realizing that the sequel for a horror/thriller is tough because people know who the real bad guy is.  This might be a mediocre sequel that gets me to a better 3rd story.  No, I can’t skip or combine them because they have 2 different tales.  Anyway, this means I have 5 weeks that will be partially taken over by prepping for Crossing Bedlam.  As long as things run smoothly, that comes out the weekend before my son’s break in February.  Are we seeing how nothing seems to go according to my plan?  (Swear, I’m taking a sledge to the phone if it goes off one more time.  Go fuck yourself, Robo-Becky from Wisconsin!)

Maybe I’ll get lucky and next weekend will be more update.  I should have the editing on Bedlam done and maybe even Ichabod under my belt.  Might edit Book 12 after that and see where that leaves me.  Ravens’ Game is a project that I can limp through and touch on during the breaks, but continuity might still be needed.  That one can take me anywhere from 10-30 days depending on the spark and distractions.

My big goal is to get the small projects done, so I can invest all of my time and love into the final trilogy of Legends of Windemere.  Once that’s done . . . I don’t know.  They’re the 2017 publications along with another Ichabod and Bedlam.  This means the writing side of 2017 will be in the air and different.  No more Luke, Nyx, Fizzle, and the crew to write new stories for.  The big series will be written and maybe even edited once.  It’ll be weird and I’m rather scared that I’ll finish all that only to be stopped.  Nightfall War (good title?) would be the next series with the rise of the Dawn Fangs and the vampire civil war.  Just so much on my mind and not getting any peace to either collect my thoughts or easily clear stuff from the mental queue.

Hope everyone else has started 2016 on a smoother foot.  I had more, but constant phone calls and people interrupting me threw out the good stuff.  Been like this all week and there’s no escape.

Volunteers and Chapter Titles for Bedlam

Deadpool and Domino from Marvel Comics

Deadpool and Domino from Marvel Comics

So I’ve been editing Crossing Bedlam and figure now is a good time to do a few things like get volunteers for the ‘Book is Live’ posts.  Funny thing about that.  Some people responded to a request in the email for The Mercenary Prince.  I kept a list and deleted the emails to clear space in the folders.  Unfortunately, I put the list on the notepad of my phone and it’s blank.  So if you already volunteered then please let me know again.  Really sorry about that.

While not a big thing, I’m toying with the idea of some early copies.  This isn’t decided yet.  If I did it for edits and feedback then it would be cutting it insanely close to the release date.  If I did it for reviews then I always fear that Amazon will do something.  There’s also the fact that I tried it with my first book way back when and everyone who got a free copy disappeared without a trace.  Some even shut down their email accounts, so I couldn’t get in touch with them.

Anyway, let’s get to the meat of the post.  I’m doing chapter titles for Crossing Bedlam instead of my usual numbers or Roman numerals.  This isn’t easy, especially since I still have 3-4 scenes in each chapter.  Hard to pin something down.  So I figured I’d put them here and see what people think:

  1. Welcome the Shattered States
  2. Rules of the Trade
  3. Rhinos in the Road
  4. You’re in Our Armies Now
  5. Songs and Stripes Part 1
  6. Songs and Stripes Part 2
  7. Bride of the ‘Burbs
  8. Kiss of the Half-Dead
  9. The ‘Delicate’ Duchess of LaSalle
  10. Business, Bad Blood, & Bart
  11. Scenic Nebraska
  12. Wendigo Season
  13. Blasphemers!
  14. A Killer’s Day in Court
  15. Artists of the Arena
  16. Really, Reno?
  17. Iron City by the Bay

Honestly, #15 is the only one I’m really having trouble with.  It’s also been ‘Spleen Puncturing at Battle Mountain’, ‘Maestros of Mayhem’, and ‘The Art of Spleen Puncturing & Apologies’.  It’s amazing how hard it is to come up with these things.

Ask-A-Characters: The Frozen Blades

Heroes from Forgotten Realms

Heroes from Forgotten Realms

I decided to give Delvin’s old friends a post and let people get to know them.  Maybe even learn more about their great leader.  First a little about each one:

  • Tavris–  A towering man with strawberry blonde hair and a keen mind.  He can be considered Delvin’s right hand man and is much more open than his friend.  Tavris can be rather impatient, which overrides his intelligence and wisdom at times.  He is always trying to improve his skills and earn the respect of those around him, which he usually has without realizing it.
  • Scorpion–  A mysterious knife fighter covered entirely in black.  He doesn’t speak unless he has something to say, which is more out of shyness than stoicism.  He has a knowledge of poisons and a few secrets that are revealed in The Mercenary Prince.  One that I will share is that he has never actually seen a scorpion.
  • Pelo the Swift–  Weasel-faced and rather scrawny when compared to his friends, nobody really thinks much of Pelo.  Not until he lives up to the ‘swift’ part of his name in both battle and conversation.  He’s always asking questions because he figures that it’s the only way to know what’s going on.  This can get out of hand at times.
  • Gerdo Rintz–  Handsome and charming, this twin sword fighter could be considered the mouth of the Frozen Blades.  At least in regards to getting information or avoiding unnecessary fights.  He is very friendly and quick to pull his companions into a celebration.  Delvin thinks Gerdo and Pelo are related, but the two of them routinely confuse him about this.  It has reached about where even they aren’t sure any more.

What can you ask about?

  1. Mercenary Life
  2. Delvin
  3. Where they went after Delvin split the group up
  4. Life on the road

So let’s see if we can have some fun with The Frozen Blades and make them feel at home.

Follow their big adventure in THE MERCENARY PRINCE!

Guest Post: Writing Weird Stuff- Or Breaking Every Rule in the Book by Sue Vincent

(Give a big welcome to Sue Vincent!  She has a lot to say, so we’ll get right into it!)

Wayland's Smithy

We never set out to write a book. We were just a couple of friends who fell into an incredible adventure… an adventure we didn’t even begin to understand for quite some time.

Even that first weekend was an ‘accident’… we had been supposed to attend another gathering that had been cancelled; an event to mark the coming into being of the Silent Eye, a spiritual school we were helping to bring to birth. We decided that, rather than waste the time off, Stuart would travel the two hundred miles south to my home. From there we could visit Wayland’s Smithy, a burial mound, over five and a half thousand years old… and possibly take in a few of the other sacred sites of England. You might call it a bit of spiritual tourism. But there was more to it than that.

When the white owl flew up at us from the roadside in broad daylight, mere feet away, we knew it was unusual… but even that didn’t alert us to what was about to happen. And then, there were the Hellfire Caves and the red kites… and the Dragon. Yes, honestly. A Dragon. And a trail of synchronicities that led us through an ancient and mysterious landscape, delving through myths and legends on a quest for understanding… and that was before we saw the rainbow coloured light… though it would take a while before we fully realised the magnitude of what we were seeing.

“We could write a book…”
“No-one would publish it…”
“We could…”
“No-one would read it…”
“Does that matter?”
“No-one would believe it…”
“And..?”

So, we wrote the first book; The Initiate. But the adventure continued, joining the dots in weird ways as we went, leading us between knowledge and understanding. So we wrote another… and another… and now there are seven in the series, with two more planned, as well as graphic novels and our own books.

fox demon dogs collage

We wrote the stories as fictional accounts, to allow us a little more freedom, but the events and stories are true. The conversations between ‘Don’ and ‘Wen’ are as they happened, many of them word for word. We wove ancient tales and legends through the story. We wrote of visions seen with the inner eye, of magical rituals and shadowy forms glimpsed in the half light. It is only at the end of the sixth book that we introduced a purely fictional element to frame the adventure… and that is probably the most believable bit of the book.

We always knew that we were writing for a niche market, even though the books are accesible. We took a decision to provide both ebooks and print, even though the cost of full colour printing meant we had to set a higher price than we would like. We have never even found an accepted genre into which they fit, one of the first rules of book-marketing… which makes it difficult to ask for help publicising them. Knights Templar rub shoulders with ancient shamans at the Round Table, Merlin walks side by side with standing stones through sacred hills where fairy tales are echoed in stained glass and medieval church paintings.

The books are entertaining and informative, bringing glimpses of the Otherworld into everyday life and questioning ingrained beliefs that we take for granted, but they are not your usual fiction. We break a good many rules; the point of view changes frequently, we mix time periods, explore pan-religious iconography and spirituality both ancient and modern, while encouraging the reader to go out and explore for themselves. We began with a riddle and end each book with a gazeteer that tells you nothing and everything.

We’ll never make a million from these books… there are no vampires, there is no sex… well, apart from the story of Father Fish… and the violence is all historical. But the books have changed our lives and opened up a whole new vision of the world for us. I don’t think you can ask much more than that… except perhaps, a few reviews from those readers who enjoy them enough to keep coming back for more!

Our favourite line from a review reflects exactly what we set out to achieve… and I hope we did. “Although a very mature, serious and in many ways learned study and in no way to imply a simplistic form, there is also about it the originality, freshness, zest and sheer joie de vivre of some of the much beloved adventure stories of my childhood – an irresistible and all too rare combination.”

Stuart and I would like to thank Charles Yallowitz for giving us the opportunity to talk about our adventures.

Questions 3: Wanna Be a Dawn Fang?

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

We’ll see how this goes since it requires a little more explanation.  All Dawn Fangs possess 3 unique powers instead of the same handful of abilities that the Old World Vampires have in Windemere.  Think of them like mutants from X-Men to get an idea of the variety even though I never really went that far.  Now the powers fall into the following categories with there being one of each:

  • Body–  A physical power like super strength, growing claws, spitting fangs, or anything that depends on body condition.
  • Mind– A mental power like telepathy, telekinesis, language abilities, or anything that depends on mental condition.
  • Aura– This is a magical, unique ability that transcends the physical and mental in some fashion.  For example, Mab is able to travel through shadows and another vampire who can coat a weapon in his blood to mimic a Chaoswind weapon.

The questions are of course:

  1. What body power would you have?
  2. What mind power would you have?
  3. What aura power would you have?

So have fun becoming Dawn Fangs.  Be interesting to see if anyone turns themselves into one of my future vampire characters, but that last category will make that tough.

Advice about writing a series

Visit my newest guest blog where I ramble about shtuff.

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

A big thanks to Craig for hosting a guest post to celebrate the release of the newest volume in the Legends of Windemeresaga. The topic he tossed my way is a real head-scratcher too. Being the author of a long series, I have to keep the final book in mind when I write. Everything needs to be tied up and continuity has to be retained for the end to make sense. If you’re ending with a giant battle then you have to at least consider killing characters off. Not only the villains, but the heroes too. In fact this topic stems from J.K. Rowling’s teasing of character deaths and closure before the release of Deathly Hallows. The real trick here is to tackle this topic without revealing a bunch of spoilers. Fingers crossed there.

Going by how popular series have ended, I would say that the first thing to…
