Chimeras: A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That

In mythology, the chimera was a monster that had the parts of various animals.  Usually, a lion, goat, and serpent with the ability to breathe fire.  It was eventually killed by Bellerophon and Pegasus. In modern times, the term is used for something composed of various parts that can be discerned from each other.  I think there’s also a genetic term when a single organism has two different DNA signatures.

Windemere is similar to that second option, but maybe a touch of the third if you replace DNA with aura.  These creatures are going to play a surprising role in Charms of the Feykin.  I can’t go into the details because it’s a fun surprise, but you’ll get an interesting look into their creation.  So, where do they come from?

There are two ways to create a chimera in Windemere.  The first is to use magic to combine parts of various creatures into a single, functional being.  This is a very high level of necrocasting since the original owners of the pieces usually die after the harvesting.  It can lead to a chimera have some undead features and being affected by holy spells, but not to the extent of true undead.  The result is a semi-mindless beast that can be unleashed on a populace or used as a guard dog.  A chimera made with this method tends to have seams and be a little sloppy, which is why they get mistaken for golems at times.  They’re also no nearly as strong as the second version.

Rarer and more dangerous then the necrocasting type, a chimera born from fallen shamans or other spirit summoners is a force to be feared.  These people tend to work with multiple spirits that range from animals to monsters to other people.  It’s a difficult and sensitive type of magic because you’re working with two auras in unison.  Many times, this takes the form of the caster taking on the form or abilities of the being that they are calling upon.  For example, a shaman that has befriended the spirit of a mermaid can swim either in the creature’s form or simply by growing the necessary lungs.  A partnership is required here, but things can go wrong.  The auras can get tangled due to outside stressors or a malicious spirit getting the upper hand of the shaman.  Since most spirit users work with multiple spirits, all of them can get drawn into the chaos.  The result is a chimera that looks like a physical combination of the others, has most of the abilities of them, and is dominated by the malicious personality.  These typically happen by accident and result in a lot of destruction because it can occur within minutes.

The chimeras are fun to bring out and they started as an average beast.  Just a strange monster that appeared when I wanted something dangerous and unpredictable.  At least that was the plan before I actually used one.  It happened in Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue and I’ve enjoyed the twist ever since.  This makes the chimera more than a marauding creature, which is great for future stories.  Maybe a hero will come across a shaman trapped as a chimera, but he/she has regained mental control.  Perhaps an army of chimeras are unleashed.  This really ups their importance in the overall world like I did with griffins and orcs.  Curious to see where else they go.

Excerpt:

I see out of the corner of my eye that Ned is on the phone. Hopefully, he’s calling in reinforcements since it looks like the SUV is gaining on us. Just as the rear window of the Focus blows inward, he finishes the call. Hundreds of pieces of glass hit Ned and me. Luckily, it’s shatterproof stuff, so we’re mostly okay cut wise. Ned crouches down and fires three quick shots with his 9MM. In the mirror, the SUV swerves to the left and almost explodes after it rams a parked car. “Stop,” Ned yells.

I slam on the brakes, which nearly tosses Ned through the windshield. “For shit’s sake, I don’t have a seatbelt on, junior, so take it easy. Just stop and turn around.”

Introducing an Exciting New Author

Unknown's avatarDon Massenzio

I couldn’t be more proud this morning to introduce a new children’s book author.

My daughter, Lillie, has published her first book on Amazon. Her book is called The Scary Tower of Doom, and it’s a children’s book that was written completely by her. We found a great illustrator and now the book is live on Amazon on the kindle and will be out in hard copy later this week.

cover2Here is a blurb about the book:

A princess, a prince, a witch and a dragon; This story by Lillie Massenzio has it all. The best thing is, it’s a story for kids that was written by one. Will the princess and her friends be rescued? Look inside to find out.

Here is a bit about this new author:

Authors and Readers: A Partnership in the Pages

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

This was an interesting picture that I’ve been thinking about in regards to myself.  Not as a reader, but as an author.  Do any other authors wonder if their readers are getting the ideas that are in their head?  What about if they come up with a different inference than you intended?  These are questions and I’ve come up with this answer:

I write what I want and work off my own inferences, implications, and thoughts.  That’s all I can do.  My hope is that readers will see these or come up with their own ideas that will make me look at my books in a different light.  I also acknowledge that there will always be readers who see things that I can’t figure out.  You can’t please everybody and something that I see as an acceptable plot twist can be deemed a mistake by a reader.  Being an author is about telling a story and not mind control.  So, I trust my readers to follow their own inferences and hope it matches up.

Kind of a shaky explanation, but I’m still trying to figure it out.  So, what about other authors and their readers?

Heading Back to Abby Normalcy

Where to begin?  Where to begin?  Seriously, I’m not really sure what happened this week beyond heat, incoming storm, and . . . stuff.  I mean, something had to have happened since my plan to start writing Path of the Traitors was about as successful as eating soup with a strainer.  I got the first section of the Prologue done and I can’t even tell you when that happened.  I do know that I tried to write more and was undone by exhaustion or distractions at every turn.

Things should improve this week.  The kid goes back to school on Tuesday and the wife starts a job that might become permanent that day too.  That means there’s less noise and chaos around here, so I can try to get 3 chapter sections done every day.  (I write this as the kid has a tantrum that would undo that goal.  Gee, I wonder why I never finish writing books by the time I plan to.)  Honestly, I shouldn’t get my hopes up here.  Nothing has worked out as I’ve planned this year and it’s too late to expect improvements at this stage of the game.  Especially since there are a lot of days off for school before December 31st.  Not much after that.  So, why is that important?

Keep in mind that I’m supposed to ‘make a decision’ after December, which is translated to ‘stop writing’ by those who demand such things. So, my big goal is to get Books 14 and 15 of Legends of Windemere done before the end of the year.  I also need to publish Charms of the Feykin and The Spirit Well.  Editing Chasing Bedlam for a February release might be tough to add into that mess, so that might come prior to writing Book 15.  Losing nearly 2 weeks at the end of the year doesn’t help.  That means I have 15.5 weeks to write 2 books, publish 2 books, and edit 1 book.  Anybody hear laughter in the distance?

Yeah, I’m not having much faith in the future at this point.  I guess I should be happy if I can get one book done and then decide on if I’ll tackle the editing or the final book.  That last book is going to be tough and need thought instead of getting rushed, but I don’t know how easy that will be.  A toss up between writing it in ‘record time’ or trying to write it when exhausted from a day job that could force me onto medication.  (Aren’t I a happy little snowflake when it comes to that option?)

Anyway, one of the challenges I’m having with the last book is the endings for the characters.  None of the champions are getting out of the Baron fight without permanent damage, but I keep jumping from 1 to 3 fatalities among the group.  All I have right now is a list of ‘injuries’ for the heroes, but I keep wondering how far I should go.  Maybe I don’t have the sizable fan-base to worry about killing off a favorite and getting backlash, so this might be for nothing.  There are ripple effects for future series that I have to take into account as a well.  For example, what if I kill a character that was supposed to have a child in a future book?  Do I cut the kid or find a way that the child was conceived before or even magically after the death?  Would people even be annoyed if I do only 1 fatality in such a big battle?

I have some special posts going up on Tuesday and Thursday.  The first is a big announcement from author John W. Howell, which I’ll keep a surprise.  The second is the return of Monster Maker Fun for October.  I already have Raven’s Game set to post in 31 sections throughout that month, so I’ll be doing this and the goal posts for the month.  I will admit that this might not help Charms of the Feykin if that’s out, so I might do spontaneous posts for that one.  Everything is up in the air and crunched together at this point.

Since I don’t remember much of this week and I’m starting to become a downer again, I’ll push the goals:

  1. Get back into kid’s school schedule.
  2. Write the first 1-3 chapters of Path of the Traitors.  More would be nice, especially if I can negotiate writing time in the next 2 days to finish the friggin’ prologue.
  3. Biking and try to eat healthier.
  4. Get a better idea of the Charms of the Feykin release schedule.  Holidays and summer vacation have thrown a monkey wrench into everything.
  5. Consider getting trusted beta readers for Chasing Bedlam.  That might help with the editing thing.
  6. Think more about that other thing that would probably never happen because I lack the knowledge, ability, and/or contacts.
  7. Give up the dream of having a lower back that functions normally.  My writing poses are either sitting on a bed while hunched over the laptop or kneeling next to the wheeled bed while writing.  The wheels are an important factor here.  Brings new meaning to a story getting away from you.
