Putting the Pieces Together: Superhero Jigsaw

Wolverine and Omega Red

Wolverine and Omega Red

When I’m not in Windemere or the Shattered States, I’ve been tinkering with my superhero books.  Mostly, I made a list of the characters from that world and wondered if I should leave them in Windemere or return them to Earth.  That’s a constant bit of confusion that I’ve talked about on here before.  Windemere gives me more geography freedom, but tech is limited.  Earth gives me higher tech, but I need to research locations to make sure I get them right.  People seem to get picky about that these days.

This time I was just going to mention an idea I had.  One of the problems with this series is that it has so many characters and stories.  At one point, it was 19 books long to cover everyone.  This isn’t counting The Shields, Savior, Jack, and a few other superheroes with their own series that connect in the final one.  I think I may have found a solution to this though.  I noticed that a lot of the characters have solitary stories and could match up with a few of the others.  So here is what I’m considering:

  1. Novella that has the heroes being awoken, revived, or whatever.  They were memory wiped and returned to the human population as babies after an incident.  Aliens capture some of the big names and inadvertently awaken all of the dormant superhumans.
  2. A large tome of short stories that follow certain characters:  Phoenix Group, The Shields, Savior, New Generation, Duos, Jack, Alien Bounty Hunter, and other divisions.  These would be large books that collect a bunch of short stories.  Savior, Jack, and The Shields might get their own series though because of size.
  3. End it all with a final tome that follows the final hero’s adventure.

Again, this is only a first idea because I don’t have the stories written out yet.  The group ones are easy since not every character has to be in every story.  Duos is a shaky idea since each story would have different characters and I don’t think I have enough pairs to do the idea.  Having those other stories that might need more than one book is a wrinkle as well because they throw off the system.  Having them in Windemere or Earth is another factor that I need to eventually decide on.  Thank god I’m going for the vampires next and only fiddling with this.

One other thing is that a new ‘hero’ is coming into this idea and he’s starting to push me toward Earth.  The story is that one character is an insane criminal who killed a bunch of politicians to avenge his dead family.  He’s only in jail because he finished his work and can’t be killed, so he has nowhere else to go.  A cop needs him to hunt down former allies that he forgot about and have decided to continue his fight.  This kind of works off the idea that there are no superhumans around until this guy, which I might be able to fit into the awakening concept.  Basically, he was the first one to appear and has been in jail ever since.  Kind of abruptly reappeared when the superhumans returned.  This might go into the Duos idea.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve been working on when not writing the Windemere finale or being driven nuts by any number of things.  Hopefully this is a step in the right direction because this series has been a pain in my side for years.  I refuse to jettison so many characters and stories simply because I’m missing a few pieces.

The P.A.W.S. Institute, on Lisa Burton Radio

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Don’t touch that dial, you’ve just landed on Lisa Burton Radio. The only show out there that interviews the characters that you love to read about. I’m your host, Lisa Burton, the robot girl, and my special guest today is Jessamyn, the head of the P.A.W.S. Institute. “Welcome to the show, Jessamyn.”

“Thank you Lisa, I’m privileged to be here.”

“Jessamyn, why don’t you tell the listeners what P.A.W.S. stands for.”

“P.A.W.S. is the Partnership of Animagi, Werewolves, and Shapeshifters. We are an umbrella organization for shifters all around the globe with branches in every continent. I am the head of the Midwest Institute that is located under the Jewel Box in Forest Park in St. Louis (though good luck in finding us – our magic wards are strong and unless you are a shifter yourself, and you’re invited in by me, you’ll not be able to penetrate them.)

7 Technology Tips for Author: Not Responsible for Sparks, Smoke, or Flames

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

We’ve already established that authors and technology can have a love/hate/loathe relationship.  As nice as we are to our machines, we work them hard and they can turn on us in an instant.  *cautiously eyes the printer*  Are there some tips to handling the stresses and fears that come with technology?  If it’s trying to kill you then I’ve got nothing, but I can think of a few pieces of advice if machines are only messing with you.  Kind of like that scanner that only works when someone other than you tries to use it.  Smug, glass-faced son of a . . . Where was I?  Yes, the list:

  1. Backup your work.  Then make a backup of the backup.  After that, get a drink and return to make a backup of the backup’s backup.  Just in case, print out what you have and put it in a fireproof safe.  Why?  Because the last thing you want is for the computer to catch fire while the thumb drive is in it.  You panic and knock the other thumb drive into a cup of soda that falls over and spills onto the final backup.  The house burns down, but you have the print out in the fireproof safe.  All you have to do is dig it out.  Easy as pie.
  2. Add footnotes on every page that puts the blame for all typos on autocorrect, spellchecker, and grammar checker.  The first one changed it when you weren’t looking while the second didn’t rat it out.  As for the third, that smug bastard thinks it knows the English language better than you?  Well, it is a machine so you figure it has to know something you don’t.  Forget the fact that it never gets its and it’s right.  You’re sure it picked the correct there/their/they’re word.
  3. Every author should try a word recognition program at least once.  Just say your book to the computer and watch the words come alive.  Then see it pick up your spouse’s request that you clean the toilet.  Delete that and try again.  Is that how a lawnmower’s sound is spelled in onomatopoeia form?  (This tip is extra fun for fantasy, horror, and science fiction authors.  Watch the computer cry as you argue about the proper spelling of ‘griffin’ or get angry that your homemade alien species keeps turning up with half of the z’s missing.)
  4. Never forget if you have a touchscreen or not.  Last thing you want to do is try to clean the dirty monitor while your book is up.  Sentences are combined, paragraphs are reversed, words are lost, and all other manner of mistakes that you have no idea are even there.  Yes, I speak from experience.
  5. If you work with multiple folders or machines, always remember where the most current files are.  Nothing says professional like editing Chapter 4 of one version, Chapter 6 of another, and the rest of the fixes are on the file you managed to fit onto iPhone.  This tends to end with you uploading the untouched original and not realizing it until the 1-star reviews start coming in.
  6. Even if you can strengthen the CD tray, I wouldn’t recommend putting a cup there.  It isn’t because it might break because who uses that anyway after you put all the original software on.  The problem is that your computer might decided to close it without warning and knock your drink over.
  7. Be careful around machines because they know when you’re talking about them.  They’re just waiting to get revenge by cra

¡Fascination is live on Amazon!

Kevin Brennan's avatarWHAT THE HELL

cover-smallClick me, s’il vous plaît!

Yesterday, with no fanfare whatsoever, I published Fascination on Amazon.

I know. Unexpected, right?

You can probably guess why I did it. Two main reasons: One, that after an initial blast of sales to, pretty much (no, exclusively), people who read this blog, I couldn’t give away a copy. There was no follow-up, no word of mouth, and though a number of potential readers expressed interest via comments on reviews of the book on other blogs, none of them pulled the trigger. Two, aside from the blog and Twitter, there’s no way to market the thing. I knew this going in, of course, but I’d hoped that Janey would tell Jenny and Jenny would buy it and then tell Jackie, who’d buy it herself and then tell Jill. It’s #guerrillapublishing, right? The word spreads and strangers start showing up. Six degrees of separation.

Meet Guest Author Vicki Lee Zell…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

vicki-lee-zellHello everyone and thank you for supporting new upcoming authors.

My name is Vicki lee Zell, (VLZ pen name) and I have been writing stories since I was eleven years of age.

I have always loved hearing stories around the campfire, which in my case, as was in the case of my siblings, around the woodstove. I was born in a small town, so small, the folks who live there would joke if you blinked you would miss our town altogether. It was a small community of family and friends and neighbors, who at the time I was young, an enormous sized family.

Everyone knew everyone. You never locked your doors, even at night. Neighbors would drop by and simply announce themselves as they entered your home. No one was shy in that way. We all seemed to live in harmony.

We, as children, played well into the night, especially…

Teaser Tuesday: You Had to Say It!

Back to Bedlam.  Really should try to edit this book at some point.  If I’m really going to publish this one then I need to give it at least a once over.  Let’s get on with the fun.

Pelham Hotel

Pelham Hotel

Handing their beads to a quiet man at the door, the pair wait for him to meticulously count the payment. When he walks down the stairs toward the entrance, they fear that they have mistaken a guest for an employees. They breathe a sigh of relief when he bends down to pick up a fallen necklace and hurries back to open the door. Entering the hotel, they are met with a brightly lit lobby that is decorated by silver urns and centered around a large piece of art that resembles a collection of ornamental caskets. The old man comes around to the new guests and hands them a set of keys that are on a butterfly ornament. After delivering their payment to a black-clothed woman behind the front desk, he goes back to his post.

“Please tell me that we get to sleep in a coffin instead of a bed,” Lloyd says as they approach the elevators. A pop makes him jump, but he sees that it is only a bottle of champagne being opened in the dining room. “Think you have a point about passing out before eating. My stomach is rumbling a little, but my nerves are shot. Had to ditch most of my pills, so I need to get some rest before I have an episode. That’s the last thing we need. Besides, it isn’t like anything is going to happen here.”

Cassidy glares at her friend and smacks him in the arm. “You said that on purpose. I know you want to get into trouble. Can we please get through a day where raising our shirts is the only highlight?”

The front door is knocked open and the doorman tumbles through, a swarm of people in a variety of clothes falling in after him. Some of them are hunched over and move in a strange hopping gait while they move across the lobby. Hisses and growls roll from the gang’s mouths, causing the guests to scream and start to panic. The last one to come inside stops to put a steering wheel lock on the door handles, preventing anyone from leaving. Moving quickly and with purpose, the gang spreads out to lock down the building and herd the guests into the dining room. Two women with dark skin and brown hair drag a bald man to the lobby’s centerpiece. Dressed in a black robe, the battered figure is tied to one of the caskets and spat on by the twins. The one wearing tight clothes and stiletto heels loses her temper and repeatedly smacks the prisoner in the face until her more sensibly dressed sister pulls her away. Adjusting her ruby necklace, the more aggressive twin remains only a few feet away from the man, her eyes rarely moving away from him.

When all the preparations are complete, a young man jumps onto the front desk and blows a kiss to the blushing receptionist. He is wearing a black suit and red dress shirt, which look strange with the white sneakers and a dark blue cape that goes down to his waist. A bat-shaped necklace is in place of a tie and he knocks on the wall with a large ring made to look like a crude wolf’s head. Flashing a wide smile, he draws attention to his surgically implanted fangs by rubbing them with his tongue. Several guests scream and cry while the chained man stirs enough to begin shouting Bible passages.

“Shit, I was hoping to avoid the vampires,” Cassidy mutters as she kneels among the other patrons. Hearing a sucking breath, she groans and prays that her companion is not going to make a scene. “Don’t do anything because this isn’t our business. Just wait for an opportunity to escape and take it. Why are you pouting?”

“You knew there were vampires,” Lloyd says, his voice tinged with mock pain. He watches the intruders move about, his eyes searching for any sign of supernatural powers. “Give me one good reason why you didn’t tell me.”

“Remember what you did when I told you about the Half-Dead?”

“No.”

“You squealed about zombies and wanted to find the damn thing. Practically wanted to give it a hug.”

“This is entirely different. Vampires are sexy.”

“All I want to do is keep a low profile and-”

The clan leader claps his hands and points in Cassidy’s direction, his yellow eyes narrowing into slits. “Bring me that blonde woman with the denim jacket. I shall converse with her in the ballroom.”

“Fuck my life,” the mercenary says, scowling at the parents who try to shush her. “Oh, like your kids haven’t heard or seen worse in this city.”

Be my guest… free promotion

Sue Vincent's avatarSue Vincent's Daily Echo

Just a reminder…

For quite some time I’ve had a ‘Guest Posts’ tab on my menu. I know I’ve mentioned this before, but many people now read blogs on devices that fail to display such menus up front… which is a bit of a pain when so many of us diligently put up tabs with pages on our books, events, online stories and the like, only to find them, for all intents and purposes, becoming almost invisible and near-obsolete.

So… for those who may have missed it, if you have a book to promote or a story to share…why not come on over and be my guest? Interested? Read on…
