Lisa Burton

Don’t touch that dial. You’ve landed on Lisa Burton Radio, the only show that brings you the characters from the books you love. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl.

My special guest today is here seeking our help. It’s like an APB for civilians. “Welcome to the show, Dr. Elliot Everett-Jones.”

“Thanks for having me on, Lisa. And please, you don’t have to spit out the alphabet when you talk to me, I am just plain “Elliot”.”

“Elliot it is then. Before we make that plea to our listeners, let’s get into you a bit. You recently went through a bad divorce, and fled London for New York City. Was it really all that bad?”

“It does seem like yesterday, but I wouldn’t call ten years recent. Eleanor is beautiful and devastatingly intelligent. She’s the woman of dreams. She’s… Damn it, I didn’t mean any of that. Actually…

So You Want to Be a Dawn Fang: Tips By Mab

Brujah from Vampire: The Masquerade

Is that supposed to be me?  I’m not nearly that pale and that clunky necklace would get in the way when I’m stealing stuff.  That woman ever hear of a comb or brush?  Whatever, I’m in a mood because this shouldn’t be done by me.  Clyde is the first Dawn Fang and the one who made the rest of us, so he should be here.  I don’t care if you can’t find him.  Put this off until he peeks out from wherever he’s . . . That’s not my signature.  I mean, it looks like it, but I never signed that contract.  Oh, that bastard.  Fine, but everyone involved owes me a favor.

  1. Just because you have the strength and powers of a Dawn Fang doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want.  We survive by living within our strict rules.  This prevents us from being discovered by mortals and targeted by the gods.  Last thing we want is a group of heroes being chosen to wipe us out.  So, be on your best behavior, don’t make any scenes, and you won’t have to be eliminated.
  2. Never believe that there isn’t someone stronger than you.  Sure, we have plenty of advantages, but that only means we have a higher risk of getting too comfortable.  A Dawn Fang can still be killed, so keep that in mind.  We’re probably more at risk of getting ourselves killed through egotism than any other creature on Windemere.  I know it doesn’t feel right, but it’s true.
  3. Practice with your powers to make sure you know what you’re doing.  We have places where new turns can live and hone their skills without drawing attention.  This is an important rule for three reasons.  One is that you reduce the risk of getting yourself killed in a crowd because you tried a stunt under pressure.  Second is that you enter the world outside with a better understanding of your abilities and that means you have a survival plan.  Third . . . Clyde and I won’t have to kill you for being stupid.
  4. If you have a partner who has a long list of targ . . . personal projects, don’t trick her into hosting a Q&A session.  Not unless you want to spend a week without your kidneys.
  5. Blending in with mortals is essential to society.  You might think our predatory instinct is the biggest danger, but we have pretty good control over that.  After all, we don’t have to kill the ones we bite and can get away with a quick nip off a few people.  No, the real challenge is not overcompensating.  We expose ourselves more by trying to act ‘too mortal’, which makes us stand out.  Just relax and act casual.  Laugh at jokes, treat people to drinks, and watch for cues from those around you if you feel like you’re missing something.
  6. Floss and brush your teeth.  This is more to maintain fresh breath since we can eat mortal food now.  Is it possible for fangs to get a cavity?  Yes, but you just yank it out and wait a day for a new one to grow in.  Still, it’s kind of embarrassing to be walking around like that, so try to avoid the situation.  (For those wondering, Windemere does have toothbrushes, but most people chew leaves and herbs that clean the teeth.)
  7. Never betray the Dawn Fang nation or whatever we’re calling ourselves.  This means, you do not reveal our existence, side with our enemies, attempt to take control, or simply piss us off.  Being one of us is a gift and we don’t want to think we made a mistake turning you.  Clyde and I are not beneath destroying those who . . . Of course, our friends have more leeway.  We’ve known them since before Clyde changed.  Don’t go thinking you’re at that level.  It’s called favoritism.  Want to get there then work for it.

Okay, I’m done here.  So this isn’t a total loss of time and patience, please leave whatever shiny things you have in this basket and I’ll unlock the door.  Thanks and check us out in War of Nytefall.

One of the best perks of writing is that you can pretty much do it anywhere. All you need is your laptop or pen and paper plus your creativity, and you can write wherever you are.

Right?

Well, not exactly. Writing, like all skills, demands discipline. Effective writing is more than just scribbling a few words to produce good quality…

This Week in Indie Publishing

Traditional publishers’ ebook sales drop as indie authors and Amazon take off

BigStock Photo

Ebook sales are dying. Ebooks are insanely popular.

If the short definition of cognitive dissonance is holding two contradictory ideas to be true, ebooks are about as dissonant as digital content gets.

Yet ebooks may also represent a chapter in the still-being-written story of how keeping track of what’s happening with content hasn’t always kept pace with the technology that’s transformed it.

Read the rest of this story HERE.

For Publishers, 2018 Is Off to a Decent Start

The four large publicly traded consumer publishers that recently reported their financial results for the quarter ended March 31 were all able to point to some good financial news.

HarperCollins had the best results, with sales up 6.4% compared to the same quarter last year and profits rising 16.2%. In a conference call…

Swift Six Author Interview -Kristal McKerrington – Romance

eranamage's avatarLibrary of Erana

Name: Kristal McKerrington

What attracts you to the genre in which you write?

Wrestling has had a big influence on me my entire life. I have longed to make their lives better just like I did when I was a dancer for other dancers. I love dance, romance and this was the only chance my friends who have passed on could have their dance characters finish a great adventure. An ending they would be proud of.

What piece of writing advice do you wish you’d known when you started your writing adventures?

Write every single day, you’ll get better with practice and don’t let whatever publishers stop you for having your story out there. Read every day, watch something like TV or a movie at least four times a week. These are the tricks that will improve your writing. Keep notes, ask your characters questions and keep a notebook where…

Vote for My Book in Authorsdb #firstlines Semi-Finals Contest

Tina Frisco's avatarTINA FRISCO

I’ve entered my book, Vampyrie, in the AUTHORSdb First Lines Contest and would very much appreciate your vote.

Vampyrie by Tina Frisco

Go to AUTHORSdb and scroll down to Submit your Vote/ Review. Voting ends May 28, 2018.

Judging is based on three questions:

Do these first lines pull you into the story?
As a reader are you invested in reading more?
Do you feel involved in the story quickly?

These are the first lines in Vampyrie:

“Where in the blazes am I?” Phoebe mumbled under her breath, afraid someone might be listening. “And how in the world did I get here?” She crept along the cold stone wall, carefully placing one foot in front of the other.

AUTHORSdb is a wonderful place to meet fellow authors and showcase our work.

I usually don’t enter contests and don’t quite remember why I entered this one! But now that I’m invested, I…

The Lords of Monsters

Curse of the Vampire from Magic: The Gathering

Image of human
Power of a monster
Soul of a demon
The vampires rule all
Who live in the shadows
And feed on the edges
Of the society they once knew

Sitting upon a throne
Polished to a shine
The drinkers of life
Act as nobles
Within the ranks of beasts
A glimmer of their past
Fueled by ego

A key to their strength
Hiding in plain sight
No fur or scales
That would reveal their presence
Standing next to their prey
Who is none the wiser
And not much longer for this world

Few can challenge the vampire
Strong and fast
A force of rage-fueled destruction
Leading armies
Of vermin and mortals
A legend among myths
That will last until the end of time

____________________________________________________________

This was inspired by the idea that vampires are the lords of all monsters.  It really depends on the breed, but they do seem to be the most popular and infamous.
