Mid-last-week, I ran into some computer trouble. This still has to be sorted out, so I thought I’d start the week with an awesome video, courtesy of the For Reading Addicts Facebook Group. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

The Trick with Promises: Easy to Make and Hard to Keep

Yahoo Image Search

An interesting theme that appeared out of nowhere in War of Nytefall: Lost is the concept of promises and keeping them.  While I wrote the first draft, I began to notice how often characters declared that they were promised something.  Part of this stemmed from me not having a clear idea of what certain heroes and villains wanted.  Those came about as I progressed and it seemed to always come down to a favor/promise being aggressively called in.

Since these promises became so integral to the central plot, I can’t go into specifics.  There was a trick with these and that was having some of the characters who weren’t holding their side of the deals not be malicious.  It was more that they either forgot or didn’t realize they made the promise in the first place.  On the other side of the scenarios were those who refused to bend on what they wanted even if it was against the wishes of the person they made a deal with.  This turned everything into a chaotic mess, which fed the overall tone of the book.  I didn’t want things to be totally off the wall, but I required things to fall into a mess before it resolved.  Broken promises ended up being a great source of conflict and confusion.

Many questions came about because of this focus:

  1. Is there ever a good reason to break a promise?
  2. What about people who make promises just to make people happy?
  3. Do you keep to a promise if it turns dark?
  4. What if two people make two conflicting promises about their future?

I’d love to say I figured out some answers to these questions, but I came to realize that it differs from person to person.  Not only the characters, but the author.  In some situations, I see a promise as worth breaking because it could hurt people.  Others might see it as needing to be fulfilled since it isn’t a sure thing that it will result in damage.  Part of this stems from knowing the full extent of the promise too.  Some change throughout the story because one side wants to alter the parameters, which comes off as unfair and manipulative.  There’s one promise that simply falls apart because those involved have gradually gone in different directions.  It would be unfair to someone if they had to sacrifice to go through with the promise.

What do you think about promises between characters?  Do you think they should always be upheld?

Welcome Mae Clair

Mae is a good friend of mine. She’s one of my partners over at Story Empire, and usually serves as one of the first people to go over my own manuscripts. I’m honored to lend my blog space to her new release.

I’ve read most of Mae’s books, and will attest they are wonderful. The Hode’s Hill series is just getting started, and Cusp of Night was outstanding.

Can Authors Use Patreon Effectively?

Futurama

This is probably going to be a short post because I have no idea what I’m doing here.  It’s been suggested that I set up a Patreon, but I can’t figure out how that would work since I only do books.  Since it’s a monthly prize, I can’t do a t-shirt every month because I’d eventually run out of pictures . . . Do I have pictures because I don’t know if the covers would work?  All so confusing.

Some ideas that were suggested:

  1. A monthly poem or character sneak peak.
  2. Preview chapter from an unreleased book.  How would this not backfire?
  3. Stickers . . . Same issue as t-shirts?
  4. A monthly Ichabod Brooks story exclusive to Patreon.  The challenge here would be finding time to write it every month when I’m struggling to get to War of Nytefall.  By the way, click that link for the new book.  (I guess I could offer the published stories at first, but that feels a little lazy.)
  5. Offer a cameo in a future story.  That would be fun, but I don’t see how that could function as a monthly prize.
  6. Pictures that you can’t show at work.  Pretty sure this was suggested as a joke.  At least I hope it was.

This whole thing kind of falls into the same category as making a store with t-shirts, mugs, and other items.  I don’t know how to pull it off without losing money.  Really wish I could find a way to get Fizzle plushies, but that’s another money problem.  That problem being that I can’t afford it.

Anyway, do any authors out there use Patreon?  If so, what do you do for rewards and how do you keep that going along with your projects, job, and personal life?

A Busy Week Comes to An End: So Many Highs and Lows

First, a big reminder that my newest book (probably for a while) is now available on Amazon.  War of Nytefall: Lost is filled with action, humor, colorful characters, and angry bunny antics.  Seriously, this was a fun story to write because Lost really shined and ended up bringing out a lot in other characters.  Her mere existence has changed a few that I can’t mention here due to spoilers.  Not to mention Archillious shaped up to be a great villain.  So, click on the link above or the cover below to head for Amazon and grab a copy:

Another reminder that there is a post asking for question that Chastity Sullivan can answer in her October interview.  Feel free to jump over there and ask something.

Now, where to even begin with this week?  My son went back to school on Wednesday and was nervous at first.  For those who don’t know, he developed a fear of the morning bus, which was starting to come back.  Thankfully, he got on with moderate tears the first morning, minimal tears the second, and no tears the third.  So, he’s fine with getting on the bus, which means the biggest hurdle is over.  There are a lot of holidays going on the next few weeks, so it might take all month to get into a routine.  Still, he’s doing with the transitions since he knows they’re coming.  Fingers crossed that this is a good behavior year from beginning to end.

The bulk of my week was spent job hunting, which is draining.  I was hoping to find something that would allow me to be home in time to meet my son’s bus and help him with homework.  So, part-time, flexible, and night schedules were the big draw.  I was surprised how many entry-level positions required years of experience or Masters degrees, which I didn’t have.  Thankfully, I do have an interview on Tuesday for something that could work.  I’ve also found a possibility that will take some time because it requires a few workshops and tests.  Those are going to be a focus this month.  Both give me hope that I’ll get a job soon and it won’t rattle my son’s world too much.  Heck, maybe I can figure out a way to do both even for a little bit to bring in a quick influx since it looks like the books have died.

My fear is that the announcement of my semi-retirement and delays in War of Nytefall: Rivalry might have caused more damage than I realized.  Traffic has slowed to a near stop since September started and it wasn’t much better in August.  I’ve tried to think of ways to fix this, but I’m working more on the job hunt.  Once I get that settled, I might be able to get 2 books out a year, but I don’t know if people will be patient.  It hurts because I’m sacrificing Bedlam and Ichabod Brooks to the blog for now.  If I have to put any writing time into something, it needs to be my main series.  Maybe Ichabod will be saved and just be delayed by a year since there is an odd chance that I will only be able to do short stories due to time constraints.  I’m hoping, but there is another issue going on that’s hard to talk about.

I’ve become scared to touch my books.

Due to things that are going on here, I’ve become too nervous to touch even my notebooks that are already gathering dust.  I don’t have it in me to some extent, but I’m also scared that I might let my current emotional turmoil sour these ideas that I’ve held so dear for years.  As far as editing War of Nytefall: Rivalry, I have the same worry.  Last thing I want is to take my negativity out on characters because they are reminding of what is going on in reality.  They don’t deserve that and it would put a swift end to the entire series.  Ichabod Brooks might be a safer project in a month due to being low risk and quicker stories.  He could even be the one to help me get over this, but it really depends on how my life turns out.  I still want to release War of Nytefall: Rivalry in March/April, but that requires editing and I haven’t done my personal run through that I prefer to do before letting others read it.  Who knows?  Maybe I can get into the mindset after the first interview if it gives me enough confidence.  Everything is up in the air.

So, what are the goals of the week?

  1. Entertain son for the two days he’s off.
  2. Go for job interview with confidence.
  3. Check out other option and fill out paperwork.
  4. Study for exam.
  5. Take 2 online workshops.
  6. Watch more of anime ‘Seven Deadly Sins’.
  7. Start setting up Derailing Bedlam posts that will start in November.  (Need a picture for this unless I always use the covers for the first two.  What do you think?)
  8. Prepare for 3rd workshop.
  9. Biking, cooking, sleeping (trying to), and showering.

Final Note:  Don’t forget War of Nytefall: Lost!

(Yeah, I’m going to make one last announcement.  It might be my last hurrah, so indulge me for a bit.)

‘War of Nytefall: Lost’ Now Available on Amazon! #vampires #fantasy

Glory to the Princess General!

Cover Art by Alison Hunt

As the Vampire Civil War of Windemere rages on in the shadows, a mysterious girl appears to deliver mayhem to both sides.

Rumors of old-world vampires disappearing and mortals being attacked by an army of humanoid monsters have reached Clyde’s ears. Still learning how to rule the city of Nytefall as a strong, but fair leader instead of a vicious warlord, the former thief assumes he has rogue agents on his hands. Instead, his people stumble upon Lost, a teenage Dawn Fang looking for her father and aided by a decrepit bunny that might be an animated corpse.  Bounding from one side of the Vampire Civil War to another, this carefree girl will turn out to be more trouble than she looks as all of the demons of her past emerge to get what they have been promised.  Yet, her chaotic actions are nothing compared to the secret of her creation, which will change the very fabric of the Dawn Fangs’ world.

It is time for the womb-born to be revealed.

Book Excerpt: Lair of the Thief

The four-story building looks no different than those around it, except for the window shutters being on the inside. A winged hound statue sits on the flat roof and leans over the eave, its eyes locked with a matching piece across the street. Clyde stares up at the red-eyed decoration while blindly waving to those who excitedly greet him. Licking his lips, he kneels in front of the door and picks the lock in a few seconds. He still pushes it open as carefully as possible in case there is a chain, which he snaps with a simple flick of his finger. The vampire slips inside and nearly bumps into a pile of bags that are leaking silver coins. Closing the door behind him, Clyde is amazed at all of the treasure that is left in the hallway and rooms. A bedroom to his right is filled with jeweled armor that nobody would wear for battle, the metal visibly fatigued from having so many gems fused to its surface. Moving without a sound, he takes in the sight of jewelry hanging from hooks and goblets meticulously stacked to the ceiling. He stops at the entrance to what used to be a bathroom and has now been turned into a storage place for a ten-foot tall fountain that once stood in a Gaian courtyard. Heading for the second floor, Clyde can see that the nearby kitchen has been left untouched by the widespread hording as well as uncleaned. A sniff of the air tells him that the mess is recent and is a combination of chocolate and hot sauce. Unnerved by the unfamiliar pairing, he moves with more caution and keeps his right fist ready to strike.

Reaching the third floor, Clyde hears the tinkling of coins falling and makes his way to the end of the hallway. He is about to enter the room when it finally dawns on him that he probably should have knocked before entering the house. The former thief scratches his head and turns towards the stairs only to look back at the door. With a shrug, Clyde creates an illusion of a loud bang at the front door and leans against the wall. It is only when he glances at the floor that he spots discarded clothes on the rug, including a hydra-skin jacket. Before he can hide or move for the stairs, the door opens and Mab walks out. Muttering curses, the brown-haired Dawn Fang is completely naked and fails to notice her old partner until she is halfway through with putting on her underwear. Neither of the vampires are sure of how much time has passed as they stare at each other in horror and discomfort. Clyde regains his senses and opens his mouth to talk, but he is immediately blinded by a clawed swipe to the face. He slumps to the floor as the burglar gathers her clothes and rushes back into the room, the door slamming hard enough to knock over several teetering piles of treasure throughout the house.

“What the hell, Mab!?”

“Don’t barge into my house!”

“First of all, I broke in. Second of all, are you bathing in coins?”

“I was counting my latest haul.”

“Why were you naked?”

“It’s hot in here!”

“Then open a window.”

“And let a burglar sneak in?”

Unknown's avatarDon Massenzio

This week’s author interview features author Tom Gould.

On a side note, though the initial response was gratifying, I find myself running out of interview subjects by  the end of September. If you haven’t been interviewed, or even if you have and you have a new release coming out, please feel free to contact me to be interviewed at don@donmassenzio.com. I will send you the information and get you scheduled.

You can check out the 210 author interviews I’ve conducted thus far on my Author Directory page HERE.

Now, let’s meet Tom Gould.

Tom GouldDo you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I try to do a bit of both. I prefer to write for myself first and foremost and worry about what people think about it later.

Leave Your Questions for Chastity Sullivan the Sultry Business Vampire

Vampirella

Here we are with the first of the ‘Leave a Question’ posts that will be running for the next 4 Thursdays.  This is right on the eve of War of Nytefall: Lost, but the rising star of that book will have to wait until next week.  This time we have a character who I didn’t expect to tie for the top spot.  Chastity Sullivan is one of my favorites to write, but she tends to be under the radar when compared to her friends and enemies.  So, what can I tell you about this lovely lady?

Chastity is the hostess and owner of the Scrumptious Siren, which is a combination bakery (worked by goblins), tavern, inn, and brothel.  She is a curvaceous and lustful creature, who enjoys using her powers and flirting with those who catch her eyes.  Her most infamous pieces of clothing is a dress that has magical hand prints.  Whoever can match the prints gets to go into Chastity’s private quarters for the night.  She has no shame and does not try to hide that she has a high libido, but she doesn’t let it rule every action.  It can also help her gather information for her friends, which makes the Scrumptious Siren an important location for the Dawn Fangs.

There isn’t much revealed about Chastity’s past, but she has noted a few big events.  Her loyalty to Clyde stems from him killing her maker and freeing her from an eternity of being a slave.  She has built her business up from nothing and uses her powers to make sure that vampires and mortals are both welcome.  Yet, the mortals never know that they are drinking and eating with those who may try to eat them.  There are rules that no hunting is allowed on Chastity’s property and she enforces it either by her own hand or the vampirized hummingbirds that live within the birch forest around her home.  This shows that she is very security-minded and focused on the future as well.

Relationship-wise, she has a close bond with Luther Grathan that is bordering on romantic.  He is the only one that she lets her guard down with and doesn’t shamelessly flirt like she does with others.  There is a mutual respect since they both work in the trade of information.  The rest of Clyde’s group are good friends with Chastity, but she does have a rocky friendship with Mab.  Before the Great Cataclysm, Mab was with Clyde, but they broke up after Chastity was caught in bed with him.  This stems from some confusion where Chastity thought Mab wanted her to pretend to be her using an illusion and seduce him on her behalf.  It led to a grudge that lasted until they became Dawn Fangs and needed to work together.  Still, Mab never misses a chance to insult Chastity, who tends to retaliate with her charm magic.  Is it a close friendship?  Only they know for sure.

So, there is all I can share about Chastity Sullivan.  Ask your questions below and she’ll respond in October.

Lisa Burton

Welcome to another edition of Lisa Burton Radio. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl, and I’m giddy with excitement today. My very special guest is an android, but not only that, he has a similar career path to my own. Many of you don’t know I worked briefly as a detective when I first booted up.

I want you all to make him feel comfortable. “Welcome to the show, Leo.”

“Hi Lisa, I’m so excited to be here. You do know you’re a bit of an inspiration to me, right? Like you, I’m a prototype, so I know from personal experience how… strange it can feel to be one of a kind. To be honest, I’ve often taken my cue from you. What would Lisa do in this situation, I ask myself.”
