The Big Man

Andre the Giant

Andre the Giant

Immense in stature
Powerful and imposing
Yet gentle of heart
Kind of word
Loyal to friends
While vicious to his foes
It pays to befriend a Big Man
Because you never know
If their heart is huge

Silence, The Artist’s Best Friend?

As artists, I think we can all agree that silence can be a blessing.  Though, I’ve noticed that it depends on the person.  Some people need utter silence and solitude to get any work done.  Other people need some type of noise like a radio or the television.  Maybe those people (like me) need something to remind them that they’re still in the real world.

I’ve wondered why I can’t get work done without music, but the noise of family breaks my concentration.  A lot of it could be the idea of meditation or focus.  Music helps me drift off into my own thoughts while someone talking to me (say a wife chatting to me while I write this post) drags me back to reality.  It has been suggested that music doesn’t demand that I listen to it.  If I miss a lyric, the song doesn’t start cursing at me and make me sleep on the futon in front of the entertainment center.  I’m digressing here.

It seems to be different for every artist, but is it really the silence or the overall environment that it comes with.  Silence is a sign of peace, solitude, and no distractions whatsoever.  When you’re in silence, you know you won’t be disturbed.  So, it might not be the silence, but the sensations that come with it.  The downside to pure silence is that the slightest noise can derail you, so that telemarketer or Jehovah Witness is going to become an epic threat.  That’s the trade-off though.

I write this as I finish a month where silence was a foreign word in this house.  Yet, I got work done on days where it was only me and my son.  He would play by himself for a bit while I sat nearby to edit.  Whenever one of us felt like entertaining the other, we’d drop what we were doing and play for a while.  He made noise and babbled away, but it didn’t derail me.  So, another part of the silence equation might be the type of noise and the urgency that comes with it.  My son’s quoting of Ninja Turtles is not a ‘do or die’ conversation.  So, I can take it casually and slip in and out of author mode to react to ‘Halt, villain!’.  Think I have a post for tomorrow now: Track Switching.

So, does anyone else create with music or do they need pure silence?

Book News, Everyone!

A few things of note going on with my books.

  1. Legends of Windemere: Prodigy of Rainbow Tower broke 2,000 sales.  It’s no longer a new release, so we’ll see what happens next.
  2. Legends of Windemere: Beginning of  Hero will be listed on ereadernewstoday tomorrow . . . that sounds like an Abbott & Costello joke.  Took some time, but we’ll give it a shot and see what happens.

That’s really it.  Short and to the point.  Think the video took longer to watch than it took to read this.

Message to the Video Game Goblins in My Room

Symphony of the Night

Symphony of the Night

Dear Goblins,

It has been a few years since I last saw this game and I know you took it.  It vanished from the rest of the games, but you left the memory cards.  So, I assume you aren’t playing the game or you have your own cards.  The truth is, I want this game back.

Yom Kippur is the Jewish day of fasting and I survive by playing a video game for the entire day.  Castlevania: Symphony of the Night was my go to game for years before you stole it.  I’ve made it with Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Lego Star Wars, and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love the Zelda series and will beat Ocarina of Time from last year and play the original if need be.  It’s just that these games take longer than a day and steal me away from everything until I either beat them or chaos ensues.  I did try with Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, but I can’t get over Leon Belmont’s Farrah Fawcett haircut any more.  I’d use God of War, but the toddler walked in last time I played that game and I got in trouble.

Look, goblins.  I want my game back since it took me a long time to get it in the first place.  SOTN runs $86 on Amazon because it’s old and still beloved.  Just tell me where you put it because I’ve torn this room apart looking for it.  Thanks.

Sincerely,

Charles

P.S.- Don’t be dicks and refuse.

Why you should buy my books through All On The Same Page

Check out this deal to get signed copies of Catskinner’s Book and Cannibal Hearts by Misha Burnett!

MishaBurnett's avatarmishaburnett

Many of you have been asking for a print edition of Cannibal Hearts, and so here it is.  I have copies on the shelf at All On The Same Page Bookstore, 11052 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur, Missouri 63141.

All On The Same Page is locally owned and operated by Robin Tidwell, who is a self-published author and also operates a small press, Rocking Horse Publishing.

She is a wonderful contact for local self-published authors, she hosts launch parties, book signings, local author’s fairs–a tireless promoter. (Okay, so she does get tired, but she keeps going anyway.)  I really can’t say enough about the bookstore–the local and self-published section of the store is huge–seriously, most of the front half of the store.

Sure, you’re thinking, that’s fine for folks who are lucky enough to reside in the Saint Louis Metropolitan Area, but what about the legions of…

An Interview with Becket, Author of The Blood Vivicanti

An interview with author Becket (Anne Rice’s right hand man) by Sarah M. Cradit.

Sarah M. Cradit's avatar...and then there was Sarah

BecketI am pleased to welcome Becket, author of The Blood Vivicanti, for an interview. You may be most familiar with Becket on his Facebook page, where he talks about his job as Anne Rice’s personal assistant, his awe-inspiring years living in a New Orleans monastery, and his love of everything geek. Now, Becket can add “author” to his list of life experiences as he introduces us to the first of six installments in the serial novel, The Blood Vivicanti. The serial involves an entirely new and unique set of blood-drinkers, which were born of a collaboration between Becket and Anne Rice.

I hope you enjoy my interview with the charming and lovely Becket, who, on top of everything else, is just an all-around awesome guy to chat with. And thank you, Becket, for stopping by!

Stay tuned after the interview for my review of The Blood Vivicanti…
