Character Origin: Nyder Fortune the Evil Gnome

Yahoo Image Search

Early on in Legends of Windemere: Allure of the Gypsies, new villains are introduced.  All of them are allies of the Lich and are on equal footing with him, but they tend to stay more to the shadows.  All of them, along with Queen Trinity, were never in the original story that took place in game form.  Villains weren’t a big thing because a game always focuses on the heroes.  You don’t get any asides for the bad guys, so it’s not a priority to do character development for many of them.  So, I had to make a group of baddies, including Nyder Fortune.

Nyder is a gnome who wears ugly colored clothing and is a mad scientist type.  He works out of a big factory on Shayde and rarely gets involved in the action.  The others tend to contact him for helpful tools or to request a Weapon Dragon.  His family is responsible for creating the part dragon, part machine beasts that show up from time to time.  His creation was primarily to explain them, so I was happy that he grew a little and developed other machines.  Still not sure if he’ll have a connection to Fritz Warrenberg or not.

Personality-wise, Nyder is easily exasperated with his allies if he is in the middle of something.  For the most part, he’s calm and collected while not carrying about what the others are doing.  Some scenes he reminds me of a babysitter, who has mentally checked out of the job.  As long as the others don’t get themselves killed or set the castle on fire, he’s okay.

What’s the future for Nyder Fortune?  No idea.  Being a non-combat character and more of a secondary reserve villain, he doesn’t get into the action.  I give him a fight scene in the 5th book, but he didn’t care for it.  Now, I can’t get him out of his factory unless his life depends on it.  He’s really becoming the assistant and messenger for the big villain of the series instead of a field agent.  Guess every evil group needs one.

Since the eversion was first published in March of this year, I have met up with a whole new world of people, made dear new friends, acquired access to resources, and enhanced both skill and knowledge.

After all of that hard work, the stress, and emotional ups and downs, it was honestly rather un-climactic. I can’t say anticlimactic. The excitement and thrill I was expecting didn’t happen.  I logged onto Amazon today and there it was, a little message that read:

It seems like there should be some sort of…

Reaveebook

How far would you go to be free—to make your own choices without being subjected to punishment for doing what you felt was right?
Could you kill for it?
After being abandoned by her father as a child, Aster spent ten years of her life as a servant for the leader’s House in the broken city of New Bethel. She’d known, even as a child, that the cities of her world were corrupt places with human monsters—assassins—running rampant between their high walls.
Thinking everything will remain the same as it always has there, Aster is startled to discover that one day . . . the cycle breaks. As a young new leader takes a strange and—at times—horrifying interest in her, will she be capable of discovering the reasons behind his actions and orders?
In a world where nothing is as it seems and all things are never anywhere near as…

The Superior Inferior

Do cats believe
They are the chosen
Because their claws retract

Do giraffes believe
They are Earth’s center
Because they have the longest necks

Do spiders believe
They are God’s favorite
Because they can spin webs

Why do humans believe
They are the highest form
When they lack what others have

We brag about our minds
They are the most evolved
Dividing us from the faunal rabble

Yet does this make us higher
Than the stronger bear
Or the faster hummingbird

We can change our world
Which we typically destroy
Believing we have the holy right

Our fanatic actions
In the name of human need
Cause harm to the global garden

So why are we superior
When in countless ways
We are naturally inferior

Do all animals believe
They are the chosen species
Because this thought is a simple fact of living?

Spouse of an Author? Dos and Don’ts

First, I was going to put a funny marriage-based picture on here.  I found that the majority of what I found revolved around men always being wrong, women always shopping, and men always being idiots.  So, I’m not going to bother with a picture.

It was requested that I write about my wife or get her to do a guest blog.  Personally, I find it uncomfortable to discuss the intricacies of my marriage.  So, I’m going to do a humorous list of advice for spouses of authors.  This has been done by other authors such as Robert Davis who wrote Rakasha.

  1. DO give your author the time to write.  They get testy if you block them from their favorite activity.
  2. DON’T start talking to your author about the price of milk when they’re writing.  They don’t care at that time.
  3. DO offer to read their finished work and give your opinion.
  4. DON’T offer to read their finished work and rewrite what they did.  Unless you’re an editor this is not the reason you’re opinion was looked for.
  5. DO show some understanding that your author doesn’t really take weekends off.  If the author is a stay-at-home then the weekend is the only time they have help with any kids, pets, or tasks.
  6. DON’T make it a habit of rushing out of the house Saturday morning while your author is in the bathroom.  You can get away with this once or twice, but more than that and you might find that the character based on you has a run of bad luck.
  7. DO help designated some space in the house for your author.  A desk or a corner to call their own does wonders.
  8. DON’T clear space for your author and slowly encroach on their territory.  That’s just mean and you might find yourself ‘accidentally’ kicked out of bed every night.
  9. DO tell people your spouse is an author.
  10. DON’T tell people your spouse is trying to be an author.
  11. DO pay attention to where your author puts notebooks, pens, pencils, and other supplies.
  12. DON’T use up their last pencil, steal a piece of paper from their notebooks, or break their lucky stapler the one time they let you use it.
  13. DO show interest in how their published books are doing.
  14. DON’T constantly ask how their books are doing then nag them for spending so much time checking their stats.
