House of Pointy Ears

Plane Touched in D&D

Plane Touched in D&D

Welcome to . . . have we met before?  You look familiar.  Must have one of those faces or I’ve been sniffing too much pixie dust.  Anyway, Welcome to House of Pointy Ears.  We like to call ourselves H.O.P.E. even though not everything hear has pointy ears.  In fact, most of our stock doesn’t fall into that category.  We simply cater to the biggest fan base and people love elves.  I’m not even going to tell you how deep that love goes, but let’s just say that we have a special contract for them.  So, what can I do for you?

Populating a fantasy world with non-humans, huh?  Do you have any humans or are you going without those things?  They’re legends and have gone extinct.  I like where this is going because I don’t make a cent on humans.  People always get a few Adam & Eve packs, releases the bastards into the world, and that’s the end of my job.  It’s why I rarely keep anything else in stock and have to special order anything else that’s human.  Of course I’m bitter about it.  You see, people are turning away from the non-human species and that’s going to put me out of business.  Unlike my brother with a supermarket, I can’t eat my stock to survive if I go under . . . not legally anyway.  Now, do you want the Middle Earth, Narnia, Dragon, or Create-Your-Own Package?  We have more, but the guy writing this skit can’t think of anything.  Let’s stop poking at the 4th wall, kid.

Create-Your-Own is a good choice because you can take pieces from the catalog and make your own creatures.  We’ll just talk about the roles that you need filled to get an idea since our catalog takes up an entire room.  You can see it here with all the ladders, drawings on the walls, and the two-headed rescue dog at the front.  Now, you’ll need a pretty race, an ugly race, a worker race, and then you get your choice of two other types for free.  It’s extra for every other race, but you can get a discount if you make your villain the ‘last survivor’ type.  Most people go for the elf, orc, and dwarf comb, but your package allows you to change it up.  Think outside of what you’re used to while keep part of your mind on tradition.  For example, you can have a peacock race, vulture race, and chicken race to fill those roles.  That’s just if you go for all bird-types.  No, they’re not going to be real birds.  You can just make that the core of their design and then make them more . . . humanoid.  That’s how most people do it these days.  Anthropomorphism is hot and nobody even realizes it outside of those anime guys and they’re stuck on cat girls.  You’re still thinking?  Then let’s consider your other races.

Since these are going to be your workable characters instead of traditional secondaries, you need to think strong like wolves or elephants.  You can also go unique like red pandas or quaggas since extinct creatures can still be alive in your world.  I always like to suggest that your hero come from one of the extra races because that gives them more importance.  Good idea with a merchant race.  We have some templates that you can examine to get an idea of what will work for what business.  Odd to have Camel People acting as fishermen . . . okay, I guess that could work.  Any ideas for the other race?  The spellcasters, huh?  I can look into adding some mythological creature pieces into your package, but it’ll cost you.  Those things aren’t easy to get like dwarves and elves.  You ever try to find a manticore in a pinch?  It isn’t easy and those breeders can be horribly greedy because of the risk.

Anyway, I’m going to let you into the catalog.  Remember to have a head, limbs, torso, reproductive organs, and you can play with everything else.  Here’s a scent bag in case we have to send the dog after you.  Maybe you should stop at the cafeteria to grab a survival pack just to be safe.  I’m not saying we’ve ever lost someone in the catalog, but here’s a form to sign.

What Do You Think About Non-Human Characters?

Dungeons & Dragons Races

Dungeons & Dragons Races

One of the biggest parts of fantasy and science fiction are the non-human races.  For some reason, fantasy gets hit pretty badly because people who read a lot of the genre get tired of the ‘cliche’ races.  Elves, dwarves, halflings, gnomes, orcs, yadda yadda yadda.  I’ve been on the wrong end of that criticism and it usually leaves me with the following thought:

‘Whatever. You can’t please everybody.’

I’ve seen some interesting remedies to this solution.  One is that an author will simply not call the species by the established name.  I’m always surprised when this works.  If it talks like an elf, looks like an elf, shoots arrows like an elf, then one could assume it’s an elf.  Yet by switching the names, a reader suddenly doesn’t make the connection.  So you can tell that it isn’t so much the meat of the race, but the name.  Other authors go straight human and the fictional races are legends, which opens the door for them to appear if the opportunity arises.  Strange thing with fictional races is that humans ALWAYS seem to be the most widespread race as if they breed like cockroaches.

Personally, I enjoy the fictional races even if somebody is using an elf again.  It’s how they differ from other versions that I enjoy.  Maybe the elves aren’t immortal and perfect, but they’re simply long-lived and have high skills in certain areas.  Maybe orcs aren’t evil and their women are the most gorgeous beings in Windemere.  People still haven’t caught onto that one, which means I can’t wait until I get to write a story with a female orc as the main character.  Anyway, my point is that I like a combination of old and new.  The old helps me connect the race to previous knowledge in a positive way, which can also be seen as honoring what came before.  The new feels a lot stronger because it shows a twist on an established race.

Sure, I do enjoy brand new creatures when they’re done well and right, but it does get strange when they’re nothing more than the stand in for an established race.  That’s why fantasy is so tough.  You’re always being held up to the old masters, which means you’re damned no matter what you do.  You get lambasted for dwarves being bearded miners, but you also get booed for making a race of mole people that do and act the same way.  This is why I think it’s best to either go entirely new or make a combination.

So, what do you think about fantasy races?  Do you have a favorite that you wish was used more often?  If you hate them, do you do so solely because you think of them as cliche or is there more to it?  I know that third question sounds insulting, but I’ve been in this debate before.  Most times someone says ‘I hate elves’, I can’t get anything more than ‘they’ve been done before’.  So, I’m hoping to hear more to the hate because one could say that about anything in the fantasy genre.

Book One: Between

By Lisa Swallow

Ghosts? Demons? Angels? Or something more? The supernatural you find living and working in this English city are a little different to those you usually find in the genre…
Rose survived the accident that killed her friend. The problem is the life she returns to scares her more than the night she almost died.
When Alek and Finn enter her world, Rose discovers the after-effects of the accident are worse than she thought. The slow recovery and fogged nightmares aren’t the only changes she needs to cope with.
Rose has an immediate and intense attraction to arrogant housemate Alek. This confuses her as much as the chilling effect of her enigmatic work colleague Finn. As Rose struggles to cope with her new life, she learns that her connection to the two men threatens all their futures
Alek has lived years closed off from people. He didn’t expect someone like Rose to come into his life and challenge the reality he grips onto.
If Finn doesn’t fix the mistake he made, his life is in danger. His desire to help and protect Rose makes his task difficult, especially when she’s the mistake he needs to fix.
When Alek’s past catches up, Rose disappears. Trapped between the living and the dead, on the edge of Hell, Rose is unable to find her way back. Alek and Finn could help her – but are they prepared to risk the consequences?

Goals to Get to the Finish Line

(First, note that ‘Beginning of a Hero’ is now on Netgalley.  Click on the cover to the right to go there.  Check it out or even vote on the cover.)

Last week was rough.  My mom had her surgery, but she spent more days in the hospital than expected.  She has a brace that tells her the angle of her arm, which has caused us to call her ‘Bionic Grandma’.  She’s relaxing and healing at home for the next 4-6 weeks.  We’re all trying to get used to this, but my parents are hitting the point where all they can do is relax and catch up on the DVR.  I’ve taken over the dinner duty for the foreseeable future.  Damn it!  I just realized that I never took picture of the dishes I made this week because I was so busy getting everyone fed.  I think I might drop that topic because I’m distracted.  This week will be kind of the same.

People might have noticed I was either brief on comments or not that chatty.  There were a few reasons for that.  One is that I’m exhausted and have been dragging my butt through the days.  Another is that I’m trying really hard to finish editing ‘Legends of Windemere: Curse of the Dark Wind’ before Monday or at least by noon on Monday.  That way I can send it off to my editor and give her as much time as possible to edit.  The third reason is that the stress of juggling everything has made me rather anti-social.  That’s why I’m taking it easy once the book is edited.  Next week will be small projects with no deadlines and just getting my energy back.  There’s no real rush on editing Books 7-8 or starting Book 9.  Those three are the 2015 releases.  It’s also November, so it isn’t like I can do a lot to boost my books.  Just stay the course.

I will spend a little time on Monday prepping posts for December, which is the last of the ‘1 post per day’ months.  I have 2 weeks worth of stuff planned and possibly a third if I can release the next book by then.  I’m considering doing those posts the week before Christmas anyway.  It won’t be hype so much as going over a few topics that come up in the story.  Maybe I’ll just do a few posts over the course of the week while toying with the other things.  Honestly, I don’t want to have too solid a plan and I probably won’t go back to editing until I finish the two W.I.P.’s that have been in stasis for months.

I plan on doing some reading, but I’m noticing something.  I just don’t want to tackle anything outside of fantasy/science-fiction.  It’s like my mind wants to avoid Earth when drifting away.  I have a ton of thrillers, mysteries, and other non-fantasy/sci-fi books on my TBR list.  It’s just that I can’t muster up the urge to get to them.  Also, I just don’t really want to read from my Kindle, which is ridiculous for an eBook author.  I think I want to spend some time with a physical book since I’m always on my computer.  At least for the next big read.  I’m picking a few small works to get my mojo stirred and then I think I should tackle the one book that I’ve been avoiding for a while.

I guess that’s enough ranting.  Here’s the targets:

  1. Finish editing ‘Curse of the Dark Wind’ and send to editor.
  2. Read Tales of Erana by Alexandra Butcher.  This is a fantasy tale collection.
  3. Read The Power of Six by Nicholas Rossis.  This is a sci-fi short story collection.
  4. Start reading Ranger’s Apprentice: Emperor of Nihon Ja’.  I really should march to the end of this great series.
  5. Outline the Yola Biggs story in the notebook.
  6. Go through notes and organize information for the Intergalactic Bounty Hunter who crash lands on Windemere.  Finally have a focus there.
  7. Cook dinners.
  8. Sleep.
  9. Bike.
  10. Take son to bookstore when he has off on Veteran’s Day.  He’s been doing great with school, so I think he’s earned a new book.
  11. Do a few posts for December.  Topics chosen: Poems of Music Videos (feel free to suggest some), Governments of Windemere (Thanks, John), questions from Nicholas, Curse of the Dark Wind posts, and maybe a ‘what I learned’ week before I minimize my blogging time.  Means I’m down a post topic for Christmas week.
  12. Avoid taking hammers, saws, and blowtorches to the phones that will not stop.

Fanart Week: Yola Biggs by Kayla Matt

Last character of the week, so I want to say big thank you to Kayla Matt for all of these great pictures.  We’re ending on Yola Biggs the Chaos Goddess who has been on the run from the other deities and is a whacky ball of mischief.  She’s allied with Baron Kernaghan, but she isn’t not really evil . . . I think.  All I know is that she gets to take center stage in Book 8 and that was a lot of fun to write.  (3 pics instead of 2!)
