See the Madness?

Cackle until you cry
Let the psycho to the surface
See how much he wants to play?

A friendly smile
Failing to contain a licking tongue
See how much it wants to taste?

Hands gripping hair
That is rooted deep into your skull
See how much it hurts?

Something snapping inside
Mental hinges shatter under pressure
See how much true freedom costs?

Dance into the hordes
That laugh and careen within the streets
See how much fun madness can be?

David Vandergraff wants to be a good man. He goes to church every Sunday, keeps his lawn trim and green, and loves his wife and kids more than anything. Unfortunately, being a dark wizard isn’t a choice.
Eleven years ago, David’s secret second family went missing. When his two lost children are finally found, he learns they suffered years of unthinkable abuse. Ready to make things right, David brings the kids home even though it could mean losing the wife he can’t imagine living without.

Keeping his life together becomes harder when the new children claim to be dark wizards. David believes they use this fantasy to cope with their trauma. Until, David’s wife admits a secret of her own—she is a dark wizard too, as is David, and all of their children.

Now, David must parent two hurting children from a dark world he doesn’t understand and keep his family from falling apart. All while dealing with the realization that everyone he loves, including himself, may be evil.

The December People Series
Book Two

David Vandergraff lost his home, his job, and contact with his oldest son, but remains determined to be a good husband and father despite being a dark winter wizard.

His resolve is tested when a flyer for a missing girl–who happens to be a summer witch–begins to haunt him. David believes a spell needs to use him to save her, so he follows the magic’s command and looks into her disappearance. His teenage daughter Emmy resents him for caring so much about a random stranger. But when she uncovers some disturbing evidence close to home, she begins an investigation of her own.
David and Emmy quickly learn that the mystery is not only about a missing girl they barely know, but a deeply personal story that impacts everyone they care about. As their world crumbles, they fear the warning may be true—never mess with summer wizards, because the good guys always win.
Coming January 2015 from Curiosity Quills Press!

Day one of my big giveaway

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Today is the first day of my three day book giveaway. This is the day to get Wild Concept free for 24 hours only.

Lisa Burton is a concept robot. Atlantic Robotics borrowed a page from Detroit and decided to make a showpiece robot. Lisa was designed to be as human as possible. She still has tons of whiz bang technology included though. This book explores prejudices from the point of view of the outsider. It still winds up being a science fiction adventure.

Here’s what people are saying:

”Boyack has a character that has no backstory. There is no history to Lisa Burton, but Boyack takes this thing and breathes a fascinating life into it.”

“Enjoy and see how Lisa develops, roar with laughter, cry, shake your head, whenever it suits you. Lisa Burton is my favourite (book) character of the year 2014.”

“Boyack used great imagination…

Call for an Upcoming Cover Reveal: CURSE OF THE DARK WIND

So I have a special announcement, which you can probably figure out from the title:

LEGENDS OF WINDEMERE: CURSE OF THE DARK WIND WILL BE OUT SOON!

I’m aiming for December 12th, which means a COVER REVEAL will happen this week or over the weekend.  I don’t have the final cover yet, but Jason is working hard to get it to me within the next few days.  I don’t have any teasers to post here since I only have sketches and those can be misleading.  So I put up a zoom in of Nyx from ‘Prodigy of Rainbow Tower’ because it’s cool.

(Edit:  Decided to give a sneak peek of part of the sketch.  This is blog only.)

Anyway, I’m hoping to gather volunteers for the cover reveal.  I’ll email the HTML or WORD file to you when I get the cover and set up the post.  Then you just have to schedule it for whichever date I pick.  Time doesn’t really mattered as long as it’s on the correct day.  So give a holler in the comments and:

PLEASE LEND A HAND!

Goals with Ambition . . . or was it Ambien?

I’m fighting a really bad cold, so we’ll see how coherent this is.  Then again, I’m tackling the next editing project after I schedule this, so I might be in better shape than . . . what’s for breakfast?

Seriously, this is when I strive to get Book 8 edited before my son gets a 2 week break for Christmas and New Years.  I have 3 weeks to get this done and I might even start writing Book 9 to take some of next year’s edge off.  I’ll have the night and weekends to write when the little guy is home all day, but that might get undone by biking and handling the social media stuff.  It could be even more chaotic if I have a book debut to do, which might be closer than I think.  So this push to get the editing off my plate is ambitious, but there is that wrinkle when it comes to Book 8.

For those who have paid attention, you might remember that Book 8 is coming in a lot shorter than the others.  I’ve been told not to worry and people have pointed to Discworld as an example of a series with multiple lengths of books.  That got my paranoia settled until I made an idiotic mistake.  Two actually.  I went to look at the outline to get a refresher and grabbed the original one instead of the one I used.  Oops.  It reminded me that I cut out 4 chapters of traveling and pointless conversations.  That stirred some curiosity that should have remained locked away and I spent some time counting out how many pages were in each chapter.  I typically average 13-15 ever since the big introduction of world and character ended.  Chapter 6 of this book had 8 PAGES:

Hagrid

Hagrid

So I’m rather paranoid and scared that I created plot holes or a flimsy story.  The greedy merchant doesn’t have a greedy bone in her body.  The journey through the mountains is only mentioned because it was only to get them to a specific location.  Other journeys were removed because it was getting ridiculous for monsters to jump them at every turn without the villains behind it.  I might be able to add more to the existing scenes, but Chapter 6 has me skittish.  The previous edits have always added 10-15 pages, which is something I’m trying to take solace in.  It’s just that I’m not sure why this one came out so small when it has a plot line for EVERY character.  I did put most of the ‘adventures’ into a separate chapter with a few spanning the book.  I really can’t say much here with spoilers.  All I’ll say is that the heroes are split up and have to find their way to each other.  Some have an easier path than others.

That’s really the big event here.  The son has been fighting a cold and his asthma, which has led to him not wanting to eat.  I did a lot of cooking and I’m exhausted.  Sales are bad and I’m not sure what to do to change that.  I did a few interviews that will appear in mid-December and January.  Read Tuesday is really all I have as far as ‘marketing’ in December unless Book 6 makes it out in time.  All of the blog posts for the grand finale here are ready.  All I have is the editing and a few note-based projects.  I did get things settled for Project Phoenix and ran it by someone . . . my ‘Yes Person’ who was distracted, but I have to work with what I have.

Goals of the week:

  1. Edit Book 8 and not cry or go berserk and ruin it.
  2. Initial notes for a story when my laptop is being used to catch up on ‘Once Upon a Time’ Season 4.
  3. Parent/teacher conference.
  4. Get back to biking since I missed most of this week.  Hopefully that happens today.
  5. Add edits to ‘Curse of the Dark Wind’ as editor sends them.  Thank her and apologize for silly mistakes.
  6. Cook dinners including first attempt at Chicken Marsala.
  7. Set up ‘Allure of the Gypsies’ for Read Tuesday Kindle Countdown.
  8. Get file ready for possible cover reveal.
