The Heart of All Magic is 99 cents today

Gwen Bristol's avatarGwen Bristol

'The Heart of All Magic' went live for Kindle tonight! :)‘The Heart of All Magic‘ is 99 cents for Kindle today

I’m trying a Kindle count-down deal for The Heart of All Magic. This marketing tool is new to me, and I’m curious to see what an unadvertised campaign can do.

Well, it won’t be completely unadvertised. I’ll post about it on Facebook, Twitter and here on my blog.

What do other authors think of Amazon free promotions and Kindle count-down deals? Authors near me say they get mixed results, but overall, the results aren’t as incredible as they used to be.

I decided to keep this series with Amazon outlets alone.

I’m curious about branching out into other e-book platforms with other books. This would eliminate my ability to use the Kindle free promotions and countdown deals. I’m wondering whether the time spent distributing the books to other sites would balance out something like free promotions.

Monsters in Nature: Aren’t They Animals?

Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke

Forest Spirit from Princess Mononoke

One thing I’ve done in Windemere revolves around the monsters.  Griffins, dragons, perytons, goblins, and all manner of beasts roam the wilderness alongside those that we have in our world.  They’re part of the landscape even though we don’t have them in our world. After all, these creatures exist in Windemere and are about as fascinating to the locals as the more exotic animals of Earth are to us.  This brought up a big question for me:

Do I make a big literary deal about them and capitalize them?

This might seem like an odd question for some and I thought it was a simply mentality when I first made the decision. I quickly realized that this is something people can be picky about. Several fantasy fans claimed that the refusal to capitalize Elf, dwarf, orc, and dragon were signs of bad grammar. Arguing with a reviewer is bad form, so I couldn’t really say what was on my mind.  That is how we don’t go Tiger, Lion, Bear, and Three-Toed Sloth when we write about our real animals. Not unless they’re at the beginning of a sentence or a character’s name.

This decision has done a lot for my opinion on Windemere. It’s a bigger, natural world when I look at these monsters are animals. They aren’t foreign beasts that have invaded the land, but creatures born from the magical nature of the world. It is their world just as much as it is of the whales, squirrels, and bumblebees. Even writing this post, I’m not really sure I can fully explain why this makes me smile. Maybe it feels like I take my world more seriously than I would if the ‘monsters’ were treated more as anomalies and accidents.

I won’t say that I never treat the monster types like out of place creatures. Specific dragon species and demons do get capitalized because of their nature. Demons are the unnatural invaders in most ways. The dragons simply have ancient designations like Verenstone and Darkvawn. As far as the Weapon Dragons go, they’re not natural and get the proper title for that.  This feels right to me, but I’m sure it confuses people. Much like reading and finding a monster in lowercase lettering.

Wiping My Hands Clean & Looking Ahead

That’s it.  The paranormal thriller is done as far as a first draft and I’m taking a step away from writing until Monday.  (Outlining and notes are still allowed.)  I’ll admit that I’m glad to be away from this project.  All of it was strange.  Once I got into the last chapter section, I felt my mood lighten and more energized.  Not surprised since this was a draining book to write and I’m not even sure how good it is.  Let me just explain how rough this was with a story I kept out of the Monday post:

There’s a scene where a character has to be driven to the point of vomiting.  Pressure and stress build as he freaks out over something.  Well, this is the scene that told me something was wrong with me while writing this.  Care to guess why?  No details, but I was too successful in driving the character to the correct point.  Got a little too close there and it might explain why it felt like I was pulling back after that point.  We’ll see what happens when I let people read it.

Anyway, the beast is dead and I get to look toward greener pastures.  After some errands . . . and appointments . . . and a birthday party on Saturday . . . and another on Sunday . . . and laundry at some point . . . and cleaning my pollen-coated car.  I swear, I’ll get an hour of rest even if it kills all of my enemies.  Whatever it takes to get myself back together in time to tackle Book 11 on Monday.  Been away from Windemere for far too long.

Some other things to remember from this side of reality:

Ichabod Brooks & the City of Beasts Cover Reveal this Friday!

Possible TWUBS Chat from 8-11 PM EST on Saturday, May 30th!

Now I’m off to bike, shower, and bide my time until the pizzeria is open long enough for me to get the stuff I want.  They don’t always have the gourmet pizzas ready upon opening, so best to give them an hour or so.

WIP Teaser: Voice of Raven’s Hold

(So this is part of the first chapter of my paranormal thriller.  I hope to finish the whole thing today and then rest for the week.  Warning: I haven’t edited it.)

Dawn lies on the comfortable bed and stares at the blank, white ceiling as the night sounds waft in through the barred window. She turns her head to stare at the empty cot and wastebasket on the other side of the room. With a shuddering yawn, the young woman silently admits that she is happy to not have a roommate. Even though she agreed to stay in Raven’s Hold, she is sure that living with someone else is too dangerous a step and may always be beyond her ability. The hoot of an owl draws her out from under the covers and she groggily tries to see the bird. Dawn is calmer after having her medication and a private session with Dr. Rutherford. Dancing her fingers along the window sill, the young woman considers that she might be in a place that will help her.

A scream from another room sends a chill down Dawn’s spine and she presses against the wall. The wordless howling continues for several minutes until it dies down and is replaced by a droning hum. Another patient begins shouting obscenities to drown out the other noises, they in turn are interrupted by a woman singing an opera. Every voice stops when a deep laugh cuts through the night with enough power to shake the windows. A faint shadow passes in front of the door’s single window, the figure leaving a misty handprint on the glass before it fades away. The tapping of feet on the hallway ceiling echoes for a few seconds and disappears when a bird caws outside.

“I shouldn’t be seeing anything,” Dawn mutters as she sinks to the floor. Her heart is pounding in her chest as she listens to a ball bouncing in the distance. “I took my medicine. The doctor said the new pills would help me. That’s why I agreed to stay. She said the new pills would make me be normal.”

“No fun in normal,” hisses a silky voice from the shadows. “Never any fun in normal.”

“Who are you?”

“Pills can’t stop me,” the voice replies as the mysterious figure passes the door again. A shadowy hand casually passes through the wall and beckons for Dawn to get closer. “I’m a lonely friend. I like what you see. What to be with me?”

“I came here to get better.”

“Odd word. What is better?”

“I want to be healthy.”

“Shame. I like what you are.”

A gentle hand of moonlight curls through the window bars and brushes some hair out of Dawn’s eyes. It tenderly strokes her cheek and wipes away a few tears. She stares at the ghostly appendage, which disappears when she blinks very hard. Satisfied that the hallucination is gone, the tired woman crawls back to bed and pulls the covers over her head. Dawn is asleep when an indent appears on the mattress and the springs creak as if someone sat down. A smile plays across her lips when the blanket is pulled down to her neck and she feels a pair of moist lips touch her forehead.

“Do you really want to be normal?”

Still asleep, the brunette rolls onto her back and whispers, “Never any fun in normal.”
