Warriors of Windemere

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It’s been a long time since I did a post on Windemere information.  I revealed a lot early on and I’ve only had to talk about a few new locations.  This time I thought I’d write a little on the various warrior types that appear throughout the series.  Not just the basic swordsman or archer, but the more colorful fighters.

Forest Trackers

Let’s start with the first hero to be introduced to the Windemere audience. Luke Callindor is a specialized warrior called a Forest Tracker.  They started as nature guides and trackers from the northern forests, which is where the name comes from. Eventually, they evolved into the agile, twin-weapon warriors that you see today.  Some change their moniker if they are more adept at non-forest terrain like deserts and mountains, but they still acknowledge the original.  Tracking, hunting, nature lore, and keen senses are tools of the trade since they are commonly loners.  If you find a Forest Tracker in a group then they’ve either been hired, helping old friends, or are really people who only did the weapons training.  The third category rarely admits to being a Forest Tracker since a real one would take offense. Are these warriors dangerous?  Yes.  Unstoppable threats?  Only the veterans who have expanded their skills.

Paladins

These guys haven’t made a big appearance, but they’ll get an honorable mention.  These are holy knights that follow a god to get a magical boost to their physical abilities.  I tend to portray them as pompous because part of their training involves giving themselves entirely to their deity.  So they do get a little fanatical at times, but there may be a more tolerable one showing up from time to time.  Many cities have Paladin Orders that help against undead and demons, but are not connected to the local government.

Mercenaries

Delvin Cunningham is the Mercenary Prince, which is one of four titles within their money-focused world.  There are many who fight for other reasons, but payment always factors in.  Aside from the Prince, there’s the Queen (Tzefira), King (Kevin Masterson), and Princess (appearing later).  This is a fairly new system created by Selenia Hamilton after she amassed the largest mercenary army in history.  It brings order and professionalism to the organization, which was needed since they were routinely associated with bandits and assassins before this.  Mercenaries come from every walk of life and no two are truly alike.  They also work in small groups that tend to revolve around a central figure with more charisma than the rest.  If not charisma then the ability to find the juicy jobs.

Barbarians

You think of a rage-a-holic brute when you hear the word, but that isn’t the case with Windemere barbarians.  They live in tribes, which tend to be divided by species.  Timoran comes from the human Snow Tiger tribe, but there are others like the centaurs, orcs, dwarves, etc.  Nearly every species has a barbarian sect.  This is because they came from those who embraced the primitive survival instinct of their people.  It is this instinctive savagery that gives them their rage, which they have learned to control.  They also have keener senses and greater physical abilities than those who came from the city people. Not all barbarians are wise and civilized like Timoran’s people.  Some are primal or have branched off to other areas like shamanism, nature control, banditry, or whatever they needed to do to survive after the Great Cataclysm.

Almost Back in the Griffin’s Saddle

Progress was made this week . . . I think.  Raven’s Hold is done as of Tuesday and I celebrated with pizza on Wednesday.  The rest of the week was kind of a blur with family events, chores, errands, and another near death of the laptop.  Still have a few more days of stuff like a birthday, a chaperone thing, and then another school event.  So we’ll see if my energy holds since I don’t have too much of it lately.  Just been working hard and sleeping lightly.

Glanced over the outline for Legends of Windemere Book 11 (not the real title) and I’m getting back into the mindset for fantasy.  The plan is to dive into the book on Wednesday and finish the first draft by the end of June.  Then it’s 2-3 months of editing Books 9-11 and preparing The Merchant of Nevra Coil for a tentative July/August release.  Anyway, the focus will be on Book 11 and all of the fun that happens in there since it’s going to put the nail in a few subplot coffins.  Though I should probably reread parts of Book 10 to remember what changes happened to one of the characters.  There’s going to be a lot of checking the former books because part of Book 11 is a group of the heroes follow the path that the other group took in Book 10.  Also, a certain half-elven caster might be itching for a fight.  If you figure out who I’m talking about, you can tell how this story is going to start.

Aside from that, I plan on doing some outlining on the days where I have a bunch of other things to do.  Most of this will be the Sin series that really needs an overall name.  I’m also seeing how each of the books follows a similar pattern of Sin getting into a situation, making new friends, an ancient threat awakening, and Sin having to stop it.  There’s a reason for this, but I need to see if there are ways to vary it up a bit more.  New characters in every book probably help, but I only have tentative plot synopses right now.  It’s really Book 7 that I see a mimicry of Book 4, but part of me is thinking of making that happen on purpose.  I have a long time before I reach these though.

Another story idea that is rearing its head again is ‘Project Phoenix’ that I keep retiring, reviving, and rewriting.  For anyone new to the blog, this was a giant superhero series with nearly 16 heroes and 19 books.  I began chopping stuff down and trying to make it easier since I couldn’t keep a main plot straight.  Last time I tackled this thing, I had only the 1st and final book be with all the characters.  Every other book had a solo adventure for a hero or villain with a few cameos to keep things connected.  Then I just tossed out the series idea in general and kept it as solo stories with nothing coherent, which put two characters into limbo.  Now I’m back to looking at the old style.  I might keep some heroes in their own series while combining others whose stories can work together.  There are quite a few ‘on the run’ heroes, so I can just have them adventure as a group.  This is going to be what I tackle after Sin, so I guess I should take some time to list everyone involved.  Doing this by memory will help me see who should stay and who will fade away.  Probably add the lower tier guys into Savior’s story since he’s got the ‘one hero in a city of villains’ thing for his first book.

That’s all the big writing stuff.  I’ll be a rarity on Monday due to the chaperone thing for my son’s school.  Going with him to the aquarium and he hasn’t been told.  It’ll be a lot of fun and I get out of the house.  Probably be exhausted by the time I get home though, so I’m not going to try for writing on that day.

So what’s the weekly plan?

  1. School trip and vote for local stuff.
  2. Outline a bit for Sin’s series.
  3. Start writing Book 11 and aim to get 1-2 chapters done.
  4. Pick an excerpt from Ichabod Brooks & the City of Beasts to put on the blog.  Hard to do since it’s only 27 pages.
  5. Get a little extra sleep if possible.
  6. Curse at the lawn mower.
  7. Cooking, but without burning myself this time.
  8. Create a 9th goal that is so easy to achieve that it’s basically a freebie.
  9. Remember to wear pants when leaving the house.

Rate your Book Cover

Looking for some cover feedback?

Nicholas C. Rossis's avatarNicholas C. Rossis

From the blog of Nicholas C. Rossis, author of science fiction, the Pearseus epic fantasy series and children's booksI’m currently finishing my second collection of short stories. In fact, once I’m done editing the last story, the book will be ready!

However, I still need to design a book cover. Lorelei Logsdon recently informed me of this great website the other day, and I now consider it the best possible resource of its kind.

Called Rate Book Cover, it allows authors to test possible book covers for reader feedback. Basically, you upload your book cover and that’s it. Visitors will rate it using one to five stars, and that will allow you to know instantly if a cover has traction with readers or not.

That’s not all, though! You can also browse the site to see what kind of covers people like. It’s like an instant trend-o-meter!

All this is available for free. There are two paid options: for a daily fee of 99c, you can…

VILLAINY

by Tony McManus

So, what happened to villains then, those exciting bad guys who featured so prominently in crime and adventure fiction over the years? To my disappointment, most of the thrillers I’ve read recently has been sadly lacking in decent nasties. I wonder why the paucity?

As a reader and writer, the villain of the piece is every bit as significant and essential to the narrative as the protagonist; sometimes more so. After all, it’s the cut, thrust and parry between the hero and the villain that creates the conflict and mayhem that is at the heart of the drama. A hero is a hero, but it’s more often the quality of the…

Cover Reveal: Ichabod Brooks & the City of Beasts by Charles E. Yallowitz #fantasy #adventure

Coming on June 1st for 99 cents!

Ichabod Brooks & the City of Beasts (Cover by Nio Mendoza)

Ichabod Brooks & the City of Beasts (Cover by Nio Mendoza)

In a time of heroes, a man will take any job to provide for his family.

Ichabod Brooks has earned a reputation for taking the jobs most men and women fear to challenge. This reputation has brought him to the charred remains of a small village nestled within the hills and forest of Ralian. The ruins are a source of strange monsters that terrorize the countryside and repeatedly elude the local guards and hunters. The few brave souls who have entered the creatures’ lair have yet to come out alive or dead.

The chances of survival are slim, but that generous payment is too much for Ichabod to resist. After all, a man and his family have to eat.

Author PhotoAuthor Biography

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn’t working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. ‘Legends of Windemere’ is his first series, but it certainly won’t be his last.
