LEGENDS OF WINDEMERE: THE MERCHANT OF NEVRA COIL IS LIVE! #fantasy

When the mischievous and random Goddess of Chaos gets angry, all of Windemere becomes her plaything.

It all starts with a collection of toys that have taken the populace by storm. People of all races flood the marketplaces to gather figurines of the champions whose adventures are starting to spread across the land. Stemming from the flying city of Nevra Coil, these toys bring with them a terrible curse: Fame. Every town becomes a mob of fans that hound their new idols and the delay is bringing the world closer to the hands of Baron Kernaghan. Perhaps worst of all, the creator of these toys forgot to include a certain exiled deity who is now out to earn herself a figurine.

Who would have thought a bunch of toys could cause so much trouble and lead to the breaking of a champion’s confidence?

Welcome to Nevra Coil Excerpt

A screeching alarm goes off inside the vessel, signaling for everyone to pay attention to the pilot. Jo flicks a few switches above her head, amplifying her voice so everyone can clearly hear her. “We’re coming to Nevra Coil. Get ready for docking at Inspiration Tower instead of one of the Ring Houses. If you want to see the city then come to the front, but you better not complain while I’m giving the tour. I’ll be going too fast to repeat myself. We’re starting with the bottom, so don’t be scared. There hasn’t been a crash in a month. Two months since a fatality.”

The champions gather around Jo’s chair and watch as the clouds part to reveal the underside of the flying city. The steel gray earth has several narrow tubes of yellow crystal spread along its gleaming surface, the enchanted objects creating a spiral that leads to a red, metal rod. An occasional spark falls from the central pole and dissipates into the clouds, giving the illusion of lightning. Jo has the vessel steadily rise to give everyone a clear view and she taps her ear to silently get her passengers to listen. Beneath the sounds of the ship’s rotors, the champions hear a dull hum whenever they pass close to a crystal. Those with keen eyes can see a sapphire orb that flickers like a flame inside the yellow tube’s core, but the strange object is definitely solid like a rock.

“The flight crystals are designed to push off and ride the waves of the ocean. The outer tube is the reflector and the ice gem is the controller,” Jo explains as they flip around the far side of Nevra Coil. She scowls at the whimpering gypsy and begrudgingly slows the vessel down. “The central rod is what keeps us in a small area as we spin like a very slow top. Without that, we’d be floating all over Windemere’s oceans. You’ll feel the rotation at first, but the awkwardness will pass within a few hours. Before you ask, the system does nothing to the ocean below. We keep ourselves at a great height to prevent that and we turn off the crystals if we have to drop. That’s only in case of severe damage, so they would probably be malfunctioning in such an event anyway. Our backup system is a small army of pedaling stone golems that we activate in the core of Nevra Coil. Let’s get to the real event. Hey! Watch where you’re going, you son of an oil slick!”

The vessel swerves out of the way of a small, windowless craft that is powered by a pedaling gnome. Once their heads stop spinning, the champions get their first look at the city of Nevra Coil. Glistening towers are everywhere with a vast collection of flying devices and beasts moving among them. Several structures are missing pieces, revealing metal beams and hardworking gnomes who are trying to finish the construction. The city is a beautiful creation of metal, stone, and glass with nothing on the earthy ground besides several colonies of orange slimes. The burbling creatures feast on the garbage that falls out of hatches, which are built into the lower floors of every tower. Compared to the enormous buildings, Jo’s vessel feels like a rowboat as it weaves among the chaos. Several times they come close to hitting another ship, their skilled pilot meeting each encounter with a slew of insults and curses. They hover when a claxon goes off and the circular tower ahead opens one of its floors to reveal another ring-shaped ship.

“This is where we would normally dock, but you’re wanted on the one-hundred and eighty-sixth and a half floor of Inspiration Tower,” Jo says while waving to the other ship. She waits for them to leave before rising to the higher sky lanes where there is more space. “If you look to the right, you’ll see the Lizard. It’s used by those of us who don’t have a flying device due to no interest, accidents, revoked license, or whatever else can go wrong. I’ll swing by to give you a better look, but don’t stare directly into the golem’s eye. You never know if it’s going to be friendly or . . . churlish.”

Dipping toward a metallic rail, the ship comes alongside a green-scaled reptile with seats grown into its wide back. A throbbing bubble covers the sitting area, the oily membrane protecting riders from the elements until the transport comes to a stop. Gnomes are comfortably sitting in the chairs, most of them reading notes or sleeping. The creature’s tail is merged with the track to prevent it from falling off while it pulls itself along using powerful front legs. A driver on its head opens a hatch in the top of its long nose to drop in a shovelful of screeching beetles. The Lizard slows down while everyone hears the insects getting crunched in the construct’s mouth. When the strange transport hisses at the ship, Jo pulls away and heads for where a trio of metallic birds are sitting on a windowless tower.

AND DON’T FORGET!

‘The Stirring Speech’ a.k.a. Get Your Act Together, Tony

I noticed something after watching ‘Avengers 2’ a few months ago.  Tony Stark can’t do anything right until somebody gives him a pep talk.  This seems to happen in every Iron Man and Avengers movie.  I’ll admit that Captain America got one in his first movie, but he never seemed to really need it again on his sequel.  Meanwhile, Tony becomes Major Screw-up until he gets verbally smacked upside the head.  Seriously, the only villain he isn’t responsible for is Loki right now.  Not sure where I’m going with this, so I’ll get to the original point.

The Stirring Speech is a grand tradition in fiction that appears in every medium and genre.  These are moments that people remember and stir your main heroes into action for the final act.  Also this tends to happen a lot in sports movies, especially football.  Anyway, the best example of a fictional speech I can think of is the following:

Personal feelings about the movie aside, that is an amazingly well-written speech.  You awaken the emotions not just from the other characters, but the audience as long as they’re into the scene.  That’s part of the trick, right?  Not just the speech, but laying the groundwork and tone for it.  You need this moment to have impact and make sense in terms of what has happened and what will happened.  Typically, you have a catalyst that leads into speech.  Most times this is a loss for the hero.

It’s an interesting scene that many people call cliche even though these things happen in real life.  Besides, would you rather your heroes get rallied by a grand speech or simply told ‘Get out there and do things’.

So, what do you think of the Stirring Speech?  Do you put them into your own works?

Author Feature: Philippa Rees

Nicholas C. Rossis's avatarNicholas C. Rossis

Instead of an interview, I have decided to introduce my friend Philippa Rees through her work. Set in South Africa, ‘Looking for Lucas‘ is a fictionalised true story based on her experiences at University circa 1957. It was a finalist in the Rubery Short Story Award.

Philippa has interviewed me for her fascinating blog, Careless Talk– the blog of things related to her book, Involution-An Odyssey. Unusually enough, she was interested not in my writing, but in the life behind it. You can read that interview on Careless Talk.

Although she is remarkably humble and understated, her award-winning work is well-worth reading. Personally, I find it haunting, with an authenticity that can only come from personal experience. You can find much of it available for free on her website.

October will be Monster Month of Legends of Windemere. Join in the Fun!

Yahoo Image Search. I think they're from Monster Hunter Video Games.

Yahoo Image Search. I think they’re from Monster Hunter Video Games.

So I’m hunting for blog posts to do in October and a good suggestion was made from the list of ideas.  Halloween is the big event that month, so I’ll be focusing on monsters.  This means two things that require a little participation.

Monster Maker!

For those new to the blog or missed the previous 2 times, this is a little game that started in Israel for me.  I was there on a summer trip and a few fellow tour members liked giving me fake words to turn into monsters.  I transferred it here and had some fun.  An example is the following from last year courtesy of John W. Howell:

Meagain

“A majestic horse that roams the prairie of Southliver.  Most of them are white and brown, but there have been sightings of black, red, and purple colors.  Unlike other horses, the Meagain gives off an odd glow that is stronger depending on the purity of the spirit.  They are also much more intelligent.  People have been able to communicate clearly with these animals even without a common language.  Meagains are also good problem solvers and those in captivity have been known to pick locks with their narrow tongues.  Avoid getting kicked because they have barbs on their hooves that can deliver a powerful hallucinogen.”

The rules are simple:

  1. Put 2-3 fake words in the comments.  These are words that don’t exist, so I can’t go looking something up for inspiration.  All straight from the mind.
  2. I’ll divide the suggestions among the 5 Fridays of October and give credit to each contributor.
  3. All of us have fun.  Hopefully.

Now for the second bit of fun to cover Mondays and Wednesdays:

Windemere Bestiary

There is a lengthy poll at the bottom of this post to get votes on monsters to highlight from the LEGENDS OF WINDEMERE books.  A lot of strange ones have popped up, so this is a time to delve further into their habits and origins.  I won’t be putting Drites and Dragons on the list due to them already getting quite a bit of attention.  That isn’t to say Fizzle won’t be lending a hand here . . . mwahaha!

So please vote in the poll, leaves some Monster Maker Words, and feel free to suggest a creature that you liked in the books and I forgot to include.  Enjoy.

This has been an interesting, busy, and exciting day due to setting up promo for this release.  The trick is to not use all of my big guns since I also have The Merchant of Nevra Coil coming out soon.  We were on track and then a technical issue turned up, which really proves I shouldn’t be working under deadlines.  Something is always out to kick me in the head.  Let’s leave this upcoming treat alone and talk about the more distant future.

The sun will die, but humans will probably be long gone by then . . . Wait . . . That might be a bit too distant.

October!  Some may remember I had run out of topics to write about for next month and asked for advice.  Well, I got some good ones and came up with another one to add into the mix.  This means next month will see a few deviations.  More details will be in a post tomorrow that includes an interactive request and a poll.  Yet, I should warn people that the blog will be taking on a more Halloween-y mood:

  • Fridays will be ‘Monster Maker’ Days.
  • Mondays and Wednesdays will spotlight a monster of Windemere with its habits, origins, etc.  This is what the poll will be about.
  • Every Tuesday and Thursday at midnight will have a section of Raven’s Hold until the entire story is up.  This is a paranormal thriller and has not been edited.  It’s going to be a ‘blog only’ treat since I don’t want to publish it, but I still want to do something with it.  This might end up going into November.

That is the October plan, so I’ll shift back to present day.

The munchkin started school this week, which has thrown my schedule a little off.  Not in a good or bad way.  He gets picked up from school later in the morning, which gives me time to bike and shower before he wakes up.  I just need to get the wife out of the room and handle the email/twitter stuff.  Still I have an hour for the computer and then an hour for the exercise/shower.  It means I get to the writing earlier, which is good because I seem to get exhausted a lot quicker these days.

Also, the new project requires researching as I go.  Google Maps is becoming very useful as I have my ‘heroes’ travel across the Shattered States.  Though I had the 4th wall breaker point out that the details will become fewer once they get off Long Island.  Overall, this is becoming an interesting and fun story to write.  It can be goofy, serious, tense, and I’m simply having a blast.  Having a world that is broken seems to make me want to make characters who are equally broken.  Crazy scenarios seem to work such as getting stopped on the Interstate by a pair of rhinos that were broken out of the zoo.  The serial killer character is allowing me to slip pop culture stuff in there too.  Having a blast making references without saying the actual subject.  Depending on what happens with The Merchant of Nevra Coil, I might put up a teaser for this book on Tuesday.  Probably just the beginning.

ONE WARNING ABOUT ‘CROSSING BEDLAM‘-  THERE IS A LOT OF CURSING!

So, what’s the plan?

  1. Continue writing Crossing Bedlam.
  2. Hopefully publish The Merchant of Nevra Coil.
  3. Promote the Legends of Windemere Fantasy Series Bundle #1.
  4. Biking and shower before kid wakes up.
  5. Possibly muck around with the superhero stories that got put on the back burner.  Oops.
  6. Daily panic due to sales not recovering from August.  Crying only permitted for 5 minutes and while nobody can hear me.
  7. Stub toe on something.  Figure if I plan it then it won’t happen because my plans tend to fail.
  8. Finish digesting the Sauteed Calamari with Angel Hair Pasta and Spicy Marinara Sauce.  Twas nummy.
  9. Clean up a mess caused by somebody else in the house.  Always happens.
  10. Continue writing Crossing Bedlam.

Anybody actually listen to the videos I put in these things?

New Book, Little Freebie, and Coming Kindle Countdowns

jorobinson176's avatarJo Robinson

I was planning on trying to organise a little launch tour this weekend for my Beginners Guide to Publishing on Amazon, The Absolute Indie, but what with being out for the count lately and my internet connection behaving badly, it’s too late for that now. Still, there are Kindle countdown deals set to run to the eleventh of September which I can’t cancel for African Me & Satellite TV, Echoes of Narcissus, and Shadow People. I’ll post again when the countdowns start today sometime. Fly Birdie will be free from now till the ninth. Click on the cover below if you fancy a short read, and I’ll share here when The Visitation goes free tomorrow.
