In Memory of Sleep

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

A glorious weekend
That starts before the light
Not with a whisper
Or an alarm
Or the urging call of nature

The child can be heard talking
Announcing his arrival
Going back to close his door
Then hurrying across
Imaginary dog in tow

Our door opens with a creak
And a declaration of the day
Before he clambers into bed
Sprawling on our legs
And chatting up a storm

Our silence means nothing
Groans ignored
Questions firing at lightning speed
We dread to check the clock
Yet he tells us what he sees

Now he runs from room to room
Trains strewn across the floor
Invisible pet behind him
Every noise a sign of play
Never shall we sleep-
.
.
.
How did she fall back asleep?

Kevin Brennan's avatarWHAT THE HELL

Front cover small

Hey all! Just came to my attention that the paperback of Town Father, Or, Where Graceful Girls Abound, can be procured in the U.K., Canada, and even Deutschland! The print-on-demand technology allows regional printing of the book so you don’t have to pay exorbitant shipping charges. Hallelujah, no?

Here are the links:

Amazon U.K.

Amazon Canada

Amazon Deutschland

I bet there are other Amazons where you can find it if you’re willing to dig around in their search engines.

Oh, and, if you in the U.S. haven’t picked it up yet (and I know you haven’t!), it’s on sale for $9.90 right here at home.

Swallowed by Gaia

(Before the poem, this was one of my favorite games as a teen and I typed in ‘Earthen Womb’ for a picture. Found it funny that this piece of my past turned up when I was in the mood for this poem.  All instrumental if you want to give it a listen.)

Ground opening beneath my feet
Fear clinging to my throat
Though I may still be asleep
A dream that starts with anarchy
And ends with an envelope of warmth

Curled within a tomb of soil
Using lungs that still find air
My eyes see nothing beyond night
Yet they still sense life
That ebbs and flows through the dirt

Is this a moment of healing?
A chance to rest and regain strength
Or is this the end?
No more road for me to travel
Only a well-earned sleep
Nestling in the belly of Gaia

Questions 3: To Believe In The Unseen

Minions from Despicable Me

Minions from Despicable Me

These questions stem from something I saw late last week.  There were the usual pre-Halloween posts about ghosts, which I like reading.  I made the mistake of going into the comments to find a slew of people trying to get others to ‘disbelieve’ the existence of ghosts.  Many times the comments were aggressive and insulting.  Almost like a total stranger believing in ghosts was a problem.  Makes me think of all the times people take it upon themselves to tear down the curtain for no other reason than they refuse to believe an innocuous thing and feel everybody should follow suit.  So here we go:

  1. What is the positive side of believing in things like ghosts, aliens, Loch Ness Monster, etc.?
  2. Even if you know it’s untrue, does it really hurt to hold onto the dream that something unknown is out there?  Why or why not?
  3. How does your belief in the unproven/unknown affect your writing and/or reading of fiction?
