The book is called Escape From B-Movie Hell and the blurb goes like this:

If you asked Andi Turbot whether she had anything in common with Flash Gordon she’d say no, emphatically. Saving the world is for dynamic, go-ahead, leaders of men and while it would be nice to see a woman getting involved for a change, she believes she could be the least well-equipped being in her galaxy for the job.

Then her best friend, Eric, reveals that he is an…

Delvin Cunningham: The Champions’ Shadow

Delvin Cunningham by Kayla Matt

Delvin Cunningham by Kayla Matt

I’ve explained Delvin a few times on this blog, but there really was never much to him prior to this book.  He is a skilled and experienced warrior trained by Selenia Hamilton.  He has a habit of losing shields, flirts with Nyx, and has a strange aura without the ability to cast spells.  He likes coffee and his eyes are blue.  Noticing a theme yet?

I hate to say that Delvin lacks depth, but he pales in comparison to the more colorful champions.  He gets overshadowed a lot with a few bursts of awesomeness, which tends to happen with other characters.  One reason for this is because he is a tactician and many of their challenges have been spontaneous.  Delvin is learning to think more on his feet, but that’s an arena where Luke and Sari seem to excel more.  This is causing him to get left behind and that isn’t helped by him debuting near the end of the same book that Timoran Wrath appeared in.  (Family of the Tri-Rune.)  One would think Delvin is in the story for nothing more than taking space.

That did happen by accident, but it seems to work in his favor.  It brings up a question when dealing with a team of heroes.  What happens with those that fall behind the others or are overshadowed from the beginning?  Do they continue on, have a solo adventure, or carve a support niche for themselves?  Avengers 2 tried to answer this for Hawkeye by revealing more of his life and positing him as the ‘heart’ of the team.  TV shows with ensemble casts create an episode to heighten the ‘weak’ character, which is what I’m doing for Delvin.  I’ve even gone as far as to create a situation where characters within the books are considering him fodder or useless.  Needless to say, this has gotten to him and is a big catalyst for his story.  Not to mention he wants to prove to himself that he’s supposed to be a champion and become stronger for Nyx.

Something to consider with The Mercenary Prince is that it is a nexus for Delvin.  His past, present, and future are going to collide when he returns to the Yagervan Plains.  This is increased by him reuniting with ‘The Frozen Blades’, his former mercenary group that people may remember from Prodigy of Rainbow Tower.  Looking over it now, I can see how Delvin is touching each stage of his life:

  1. Early childhood in Yagervan before he was lost.
  2. Training years with Selenia at the Hamilton Military Academy.
  3. Life as the Mercenary Prince.
  4. Role as a champion.
  5. His future.

I don’t think such a journey could work with most of the other champions given their backgrounds.  Delvin’s been almost background due to his laid back persona and handing off tasks to others.  One might even think that he hasn’t been able to function very well in a group where he isn’t the official leader.  Honestly, there are so many aspects to his situation that it shouldn’t be surprising that an entire book and big adventure is needed to make the poor guy whole.  If nothing else, Delvin will finally put the ghosts of his past into the grave.

Another Call to Arms & Progress!

Sketch by Jason Pedersen

Sketch by Jason Pedersen

Progress is obviously being made and I hope to get more sketches this week.  The hope is that things will be ready to go by Christmas.  Maybe even earlier if this is a low chaos week for everyone involved.  Not sure when the best time to release the book will be, but I’m thinking Christmas Eve and Day might be tough.  Fingers are crossed that I can do it Sunday or next Monday.  This is coming dangerously close to being a declaration of a release date.  Don’t hold me to this.

Anyway, I’m making another call for volunteers.  The funds are a little low, which means I might not be able to use all of the paid promo sites.  That means word of mouth and reviews and blogging is even more important this time.  My head is kind of spinning too, but I went through the previous calls to action and listed everyone who volunteered.  An early thank you for that.

Oh, and I’m going to be attaching a tag list for people to use on the promo post too.  Just an easy copy/paste.

One question before I end on a video that nobody will listen to:

  • Do I figure out a way to promote all of the previous Legends of Windemere books or only do the Bundle?  I’m thinking the Bundle for the HTML file I send to everyone who volunteers and make a slideshow with a list of links below for the one on my blog, which would replace my bio.  No sense in saying who I am and listing my social media sites while I’m on my social media sites.  Throw Ichabod Brooks in there too.

Post Revisited- Zombies: Not Always the Same Flavor

Odd that a lot of the top posts that aren’t reblogs or promos come from summer and October.  This one went live on October 23rd, 2013.

I’m not a big zombie fan.  Seriously, I’ve seen some Walking Dead and own both Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland.  I played a lot of Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead, but I’m not a zombie addict.  Mostly, I think they’re scary, but a little odd at the same time.  They get you with the swarm, so running makes the most amount of sense.  I’m not hear to discuss tactics though.

A common complaint I hear from some of my zombie-loving friends . . . that didn’t sound right.  Anyway, people seem to get angry when you alter a zombie.  Give them the ability to run and some fans will lose their freaking minds.  Slow, shambling, groaning, feeling no pain mobs is all they want.  It is a little ridiculous to me, but I come from a different area than most.

Rewind to March, a few days after I published Legends of Windemere: Beginning of a Hero.  I started getting messages about how it was cool that I used zombies in my fantasy book.  WUH!?  Remember that I played Dungeons & Dragons where zombies are the next level of undead you start fighting after skeletons become easy.  They’re the bread and butter of necromancers, so I thought they were a fantasy standard.  Apparently, they’re not even though I swear I’ve seen them in others.

I messed with my zombies from the beginning too.  Immune to holy magic, keep on coming after being set on fire, and then there are the vast zombie species I came up with for Legends of Windemere: Allure of the Gypsies.  I went wild with my necromantic creations when our heroes enter Kalam’s lair.  I’m excited to see what people think of them when they debut.  I’m not even talking zombies of various species, which opens up new abilities too.  Grafting, magical enhancements, and the sky really is the limit if you can give even a mild explanation.

Magic is key here, of course.  If you put zombies in a non-magical setting then you have limitations to worry about.  So, keep the technology/magic/realism of the world in mind if you go away from shambling swarm.  Though, it’s best to keep the swarm because that’s the core of the zombie fear.  Imagine getting surrounded by an unstoppable wave of flesh-eating creatures instead of having to battle one quick one.  This is a mentality to take into account too.  Will people be afraid of zombies or are there scarier things out there.  Could there be others reasons zombies are so feared even in a world with dragons and vampires?  This quirks can change and deepen your zombies mythos to bring you away from the pack.

I think we’ve come to a point where zombies can be altered and you can have fun with the idea.  Vampires and werewolves are there.  The original has been done so much or slightly altered that you’ll really have to twist to get praise for being highly unique.  I think many authors aim for the unique origin or use the zombies as background.  It’s the human struggle that’s important these days.  Still, have some fun with zombie types if you can find a way to do so.  Although, you will probably have to deal with a few vocal traditionalists, so prepare for criticism.  People really love their zombies . . . okay, I see why that doesn’t sound right this time.

*Witty Title Involving Job Hunting*

*This became a rant.*

Things are stressful here and I’ve said that every weekend.  Broken record syndrome, but I’m going to try to get a little more into it.  Mostly because this week seemed to bring everything to a head.  A few breakdowns for people, arguments, attitude, and just feeling like we just can’t win.  Try to wrap your head around having to explain to a 6-year-old why you’re worried about money since he overheard the conversation.  Even worse when he does the ‘things will be okay, daddy’ and you’re left wondering if he means it or is mimicking what you say when he’s upset.

I’m not the one job hunting, but I’m doing whatever I can to help the wife think of things to do.  This week was us snapping at each other over everything.  When she’s stressed or down, she gives attitude.  When I get stressed or down, I shout.  Not a good combo, especially when you factor in how much bullshit is involved in job hunting these days.  At least if you’re trying to make enough to pay bills and survive.  Yes, anyone can find a job, but that doesn’t mean it will help because it might pay so poorly that you end up further in the hole because of gas, food, and whatever else you need to pay into for the job.

It’s so frustrating to see so many resumes go out and no response come back.  You read articles that say ‘One should follow up 2 days after sending a resume’ and then another that says ‘Following up on a resume will eliminate you from consideration’.  You sign up with a temp agency in the hopes of getting some work or a permanent position, but that results in a headache.  No responses, your agent isn’t there, they’re still negotiating their finder’s fee, sorry we forgot to tell you the job went to someone else, and so many other things while you’re still trying to find work.  My wife said it best on the phone that she understands these people have to do their job, but while they drag stuff on, she isn’t working.  Unemployment dries up eventually and those people seem to be the only ones that are optimistic about things right now.  Gotta give them credit for trying to keep people’s spirits up.

Does that end our stress?  Fuck no!  Bring on the medical insurance company that we get through the State.  You get what you pay for here.  They argued against my yearly eye exam even though I double-checked with them.  They argued against my son getting laughing gas for his first tooth being pulled.  They argued against him having blood tests by the allergist and I think I remember they trying to weasel out of the epi-pens and inhalers.  Every medical visit we’ve done with these people ends up being a fight.  Since my wife is the primary, they usually don’t talk with me, so she has to make the calls on top of the job hunting.  Though we’ve agreed that the next time they call, I’m stepping in and using the language that I feel they’ve earned.  Still, added stress and tears that have led to several breakdowns.

This hasn’t just been our week, but the last 2 months and things feel more and more dire as time passes.  I’ve been looking around myself and I’ve no idea what I could possibly do for a job.  Office work, retail, and food would be it, but then who would be around for the kid when he gets off from school?  I feel like a terrible parent if I leave my dad to raise my son in terms of homework and school meetings.  Not to mention what happens if he has something to do and the kid is sick.  The writing would definitely be a thing of the past too because I simply wouldn’t have the time for editing and marketing.

We’re hoping this is simply a terrible time to job hunt for anything other than seasonal.  Things might pick up in January, but that isn’t a guarantee.  We see stories of people hunting for years or settling for something that forces them to live paycheck to paycheck.  A single disaster is life-destroying and we always run into those.  Broken car, sick kid, sick adult, medical debt, and the list keeps going.  In fact, this post has been going on a lot longer than I expected.  It’s just been frustrating, depressing, and I really have a hard time thinking of a solution.

This is the last full week before the kid starts his break and my mom will be home too.  She’s getting the hardware taken out of her repaired elbow, so maybe having a bunch of family time will help on all fronts.  My only plan for this week is to try and finish the writing project I’m on before that break.  I’ll be editing Crossing Bedlam at night during that time and I might have the occasional day where I’m left home to write.  Hard for me to think about it with any excitement.  Still in the dark about The Mercenary Prince, but I have hype stuff scheduled until mid-January.  Then I’ll switch to Bedlam hype.

I don’t have the enthusiasm I should have for all of this because I feel like I’m staring down the barrel of a gun.  I mean, how many times can we get knocked down before we just can’t maintain the hope that we’ll rise and stay there?  There’s this sense that the next job will be good and then something will happen beyond our control to plunge us back into this situation.  It’s been happening to us for years and it feels like this time is kind of hitting harder than before.  Probably because we have a child who is asking about it, which really brings home the fact that we aren’t falling by ourselves.  We’re taking him with us and that’s what fucking hurts.

A Dash of This, A Pinch of That, and a Headache Ensues

Crisis on Infinite Earths by DC Comcis

Crisis on Infinite Earths by DC Comics

Okay, so it might not be that bad.  Normally I would save this for the goal post, but I felt like talking about it separately.  Mostly because tomorrow’s post is going to be more about another topic.  Getting hard to concentrate since it suddenly became really loud in this house and I’m too tired to figure out why.  So let’s see how this goes.

Some people might remember me mentioning many times that I have about 30-35 stories in various forms of outlines.  With the exception of Crossing Bedlam, all of them take place in Windemere.  This means I do a lot of interconnecting like cameos from other heroes and mentions of other events.  For example, any of the champions from Legends of Windemere who survive will make appearances from time to time.  Some heroes even show up in multiple series like Rayne and Bogard.  Eventually they reach a finale and you can meet them at any point without being lost.  Still I’m working with a maze-like web whenever I do future outlines.

That brings me to the current outline project.  This is a 9 book series of grand adventures with one hero who ends up reuniting with old friends and making new ones as he travels around Windemere.  The first book was rather easy to do since the outline has been sitting untouched since Junior Year of college.  Now I’m on the second and ‘things’ are making it a wee bit head spinning.  I haven’t even touched the plot yet, which is next week.  This week has been heroes, villains, and double checking my future plans.  How could this be so hard?

Because I’m merging four things into one here:

  1. The original story.
  2. The new version
  3. Zombie Girl
  4. A story that got previously junked, but works here.

#3 could turn into 1 or 2 books on her own if she comes out good and is popular enough.  The rest are all in various pieces throughout multiple notebooks or, in the case of #4, a stapled packet that seems to have lost a fight with a cup of soda.  Can barely read the thing.  It doesn’t help that the more current stuff I’m working off is still done in my own shorthand, which I don’t always remember.  When I write these things, I’m expecting to get back to them earlier than I do.  So there’s an added dimension of ‘what in the world is past me talking about?’

Sinus HeadacheThis is a complicated series to begin with since it connects with so many other stories that I predict needing pauses to jump series.  Can’t have Sin go to a land or city that hasn’t been founded yet.  Kind of ruins the other story.  So far I can think of 5 other tales that this connects to, but 3 of them involve characters who debut in this series.  Maybe this part of the problem isn’t as bad as I think.  At least until I start writing it.

Would it be easier to chuck everything away and make a story from scratch?  Yes, but no idea how that would happen.  The meat of this story is from the original and I’ve simply added characters while re-positioning others.  Some heroes are now villains and others have gone to different stories.  A lot of villains and supporting characters have been placed in stasis until I find a new home for them too.  Besides, it would be rather silly to erase everything just because I’m changing my direction in one arena.  Getting a headache just thinking about it again.

I’m left wondering if other authors have this problem.  I’ve yet to meet any that have planned stories this far ahead or are going for something of this scale.  At least with this level of preparation because I think I met one who had a big world that they would add to in the future.  This whole thing places me in a frustrating position at times:  I have to write the present while checking the past and planning the future.  Not just for the series I’m working on, but the ones that will come in the future.

I need to lie down.
