Post Revisited- Why Do You Write?
This originally went live on April 28th, 2014. Couldn’t pass this one up when I stumbled onto it. It was actually the beginning of a series and I looked into each of my reasons throughout the week. This was back when I was doing lengthy themes.
We see and hear this question a lot: Why do you write?
The funny thing is that I’ve seen some people answer this question differently every time it’s asked. Typically, this is part of an interview, so we feel like there’s limited space to answer. Maybe that’s why an author plunges their hand into the bag of ‘why’ and pulls only one of the reason out. It’s unfortunate because an author who answers ‘I do it for the love of words’ one time and says ‘to pay the bills’ a few months later can get labeled as a hypocrite. Then the backtracking occurs even though they were correct both times. It might even be that reasons change.
Personally, I write because I love writing and enjoy sharing my stories. That’s the main reason and I think every person has a core reason. Other answers come about to connect to the core, so I can’t really ignore them. I do want to make enough money to live on with my writing. Through this, I can continue writing full-time and more of my stories can come to light. I won’t deny that part of me wants to leave a literary legacy behind as well, which is why I’m trying to create a vast world with Windemere. Only one series that I have planned will appear outside of Windemere and only because it’s in outer space. This could change if I feel that I’m not up to tackling science-fiction due to my lack of science knowledge and desire to explain the inner workings of some tech. Finally, I truly can’t see myself doing anything except writing. So, it boils down to:
- Love of writing.
- Desire to bring escapist joy to others.
- Money.
- Leaving a legacy.
- Don’t know any better.
So, one could say that it really isn’t a simple, cut-and-dry answer for me. Though that’s just me. I’ve met people who really do boil down to a single reason such as ‘easy way to make money’, ‘easy way to get famous’, or ‘I have a story to tell’.
What are your reasons for taking on the mantle of author/writer?

The Mercenary Life in Windemere
Typically, the Mercenaries found in fantasy worlds are bands of warriors who simply hire themselves out for money. Unscrupulous, immoral at times, and downright ill-mannered in their depiction. Many times they act as a secondary danger or henchmen, which makes them similar, if not identical, to bounty hunters. The two are very close to each other since they do jobs for money. Possibly the only real difference is that Mercenaries tend to be hired for battles while bounty hunters are given a single target to track down. Still, this role is rarely anything more than ‘we are mean and cruel warriors who are in it for the money’.
That still holds true with the Mercenaries found in Windemere, but there’s actually more organization behind them. At least on the continent of Ralian. There is a place called Fort Journeyman, which Delvin will be traveling too and it will reveal that the Mercenaries have their own society. It’s similar to a thieves’ guild in that there is a hierarchy, but there are no dues or cuts taken by others. You claim the job, do the job, and take all of the money for the job. The reason Fort Journeyman exists is to act as a hub for the trade, so many stay around to spend their pay while waiting for another job. People know that this is where you go when you want to hire a Mercenary. There is no trading between the Fort and other regions due to them wanting to stay neutral, but they do have a mild loyalty to the throne of Serab. Only because Duke Solomon lets them do business without interruption and even lets them pay taxes in jobs instead of money.
It wasn’t always like this though. Fort Journeyman has been around for a while, but the organization turned up about 20-25 years ago. This is when the hierarchy really formed with rankings and the ‘royalty’. The Mercenary Nobles are the Queen, King, Prince, and Princess, which are handed down to those that the current feels have earned it. You can always challenge for it, but that doesn’t usually end well. The Prince and Princess have changed hands several times, which makes them the most fluid. There have only been two Queens and the original King is still kicking. In his defense, nobody has really appeared to truly earn the mantle. Not that there is anything beyond reputation behind these names. It is a cherished title, but it doesn’t come with a salary or magical gear. You can earn better jobs and have more loyal men, but that’s really it.
Where did the Nobles come from? Well, a determined half-elf appeared with a desire to make a name for herself. She created the second largest mercenary army in history (coming in second to Tzefira’s Salamander Army) and they only had one loss, which was their final battle. To be fair, it wasn’t the whole army that lost, but the leadership who thought a job was one thing and it turned out to be a lot worse. The original Mercenary Queen disbanded her army, retired from the life, and used her fortune and contacts to create an academy for the next generation of warriors. Yet, her legacy still stands and the Nobles that ruled her army has been adopted by the entire trade.
So who were the first ones?
Queen- Selenia Hamilton (Duh)
King- Kevin Masterson (Duh again.)
Prince- Daniel Skyblade (Delvin is actually the 9th)
Princess- Annabeth Pelldin (Died in final mission. Current one is 11th to hold title.)
Those numbers for Prince and Princess might seem high, but it is a dangerous life. Many die, become too injured to continue, or simply retire. Most know that retiring means you have over the title. Of course, nobody has successfully convinced Kevin Masterson that this is how it works. Beat the man to become the King is his tactic and Selenia gets a kick out of watching youngsters lose to a guy with two damaged limbs. That’s another thing you need to be a successful Mercenary in Windemere: a dark sense of humor.
Lonely Author Stockings Stuffers
Ugh. Not another fiasco. Last year it was my failed Christmas venture – The Lonely Author Glow in the Dark Yo-Yo (No Strings Attached).
Now my special toy for this holiday season won’t make the Kmart shelves. Yes, I am sorry to announce you won’t be finding The Lonely Author Action figures in your stockings this year.
To make it up to you, I will make a few recommendations.
Everything I Never Told You – Many of you already know Tosha Michelle, in case you don’t you, have to read her work. Ever since Lonely Author was a little boy he rooted for the underdog. Have you Seen a Will O’ the Wisp?
Eerie green phosphorescent lights have been seen hovering over Bergamot Holler in Virginia since the beginning of time. What are these lights and why are they there? Speculation is that the lights are just swamp gasses floating harmlessly in the stillness of an autumn evening, even though their appearance has foretold many stories about fairies, ghosts, and witches.
That is until Patty Hall, a not-so-average 15-year-old, witnesses the Will O’ the Wisp first…

Legends of Windemere: The Mercenary Prince Cover Reveal . . . and News! #fantasy
First the news . . . I saw Star Wars: Force Awakens and it was really good. Can’t say any more without spoilers.
Now for the important news . . . I won’t have the book out before Christmas. A person wiser than me (my bestie and occasional partner in cheesecake) pointed out that releasing the book now could backfire. She’s very right. It’s very close to the holiday and the schools are starting their breaks. People are away on vacation or busy with family, so the debut posts might end up playing to an empty audience this week. Even I’d be absent for chunks of this week with the kid being home and some family events on the horizon. That would cost me valuable time with the promotions. So, what will I do?
I’m going to be releasing Legends of Windemere: The Mercenary Prince after the weekend. Due to already purchasing various marketing space for January, I do need to have the book go live before the end of the month. The sale link is needed for these promos. I’m thinking of publishing it late on Monday, December 28th or early on Tuesday, December 29th. Weather, health, and a final family event are the deciding factors here. Beyond that, next week is actually a lot clearer in terms of time at least for me. I can do a stronger push without rushing to meet the holiday and use this week to build up some hype.
Starting with the cover:

So, what do you think of the cover and the plan? Again, I do apologize about the sudden change. For those who are hosting guest posts, I promise to send those out as soon as the book goes live. You will receive them before January.

Post Revisited- Paranoia in Self-Publishing?
This is a big one that went live on February 8th, 2014. I think I’ve figured some of it out, but don’t hold me to that. Though re-reading it, I do seem some of my youthful naivete in there at a few points.
I had a thought yesterday that birthed a panic attack that my dear friend Ionia had to smack me out of. I think she rather enjoyed it a bit too much and I’m still looking for my missing contact lens, which is weird since I wear glasses. There’s also been a phone ringing for the last 24 hours.
Seriously though, take a look at what an Indie Author has to face:
- Negative Reviews
- Abusive Reviews
- Abusive e-mails, FB comments, & Tweets
- Pressure of writing another book
- Writer’s Block
- Marketing failures
- Finding marketing sites
- Bad sales days
- No sales days
- Amazon rankings
- People reacting to your rankings falling as if it’s time to pack in the dreams and head for the nearest cubicle.
- Finding time to write
- Editing
- Hate sites if you get that far
- Haters if you make a wrong move
- Illegal downloads of your book
- Returns of your book
- Formatting issues
- Friends not talking to you about your book
- Authors who that think this is a competition and work to sabotage
- People requesting your book for review and never getting back to you, which costs you a book.
That’s just off the top of my head, but that is a long and nasty list of obstacles. A traditionally published author might be shielded from a lot of this by a publishing company or an agent. I don’t believe they see the daily sales and haters are easily deflected by someone else. There’s a sense of having more shielding from such hardships when you have this benefit. Of course, you also make less for every sale and have less control over things, so that’s the trade-off.
Sadly, Indie Authors have the fun of being naked to all of these things. Sure, you can ignore the sales and rankings, but curiosity gets most of us. Many of us are working other jobs and/or have families, so constant marketing and writing the next book becomes a challenge. It feels like one obstacle after another and a truly horrific week can do a number on an Indie Author’s confidence and sanity. That was me last week when I kept wondering what else could possibly go wrong. By Friday, I was about ready to crawl into a corner and cry because I simply couldn’t figure out what was going wrong. That’s another issue for many Indie Authors. Many of us don’t know the high and low times of the book market, so it takes time to figure out if it’s slow across the board or we screwed up somewhere. This creates a paranoia and you’ll find yourself doing some odd things:
- Going for every expensive marketing thing you can find.
- Swearing you’re going to quit.
- Deleting your book then putting it back up.
- Fighting with a negative reviewer.
- Search the Internet for the site that ‘must be’ spreading bad words about you.
- Voodoo dolls.
- Taking care of the last of the Super Bowl beer.
- Spending time with family whether they like it or not.
So, what can an Indie Author do about this? I’m still figuring that out, but I have ideas. Focus entirely on the next project is one idea. Vent in private or to a friend who is willing to listen then beat you with a chair for being an idiot. Hunt for silver linings or just watch the movie. It really depends on your personality and stress levels. I used to play violent video games to get my aggression out, but that’s no longer an option since my son caught me playing God of War. A final idea that might work is to pick a small, simple project and do it. Get yourself a victory to overshadow the obstacles and stresses, which will also remind you that you can succeed.
So, any Indie Authors get into this paranoia state? What did you do to get out of it or avoid it completely?
