What is a Feykin?

D&D Pixie

D&D Pixie

As you can tell from the book title, Charms of the Feykin, there is a new creature being introduced in the series.  Sort of.  The truth is that readers have already met a Feykin, but the character didn’t know the term.  In fact, the word is rarely used outside of the jungle because they aren’t really found anywhere else.

So, a Feykin is what one would call a fairy hybrid.  These aren’t always 50/50 or with a human, as you will see in the book.  Some Feykin come from generations stemming single pairing.  In families like this, powers might not appear in every generation and some may be stronger than others.  Since a fairy’s powers are magical in nature, the potency is determined by a descendant’s aura.  For example, a great-great-grandchild with weak aura may have no Feykin traits while one with a powerful aura may be as strong as their ancestor.  These abilities work like caster magic, but can circumvent a few anti-magic spells that are designed for learned casting.  As for types of powers, it depends on the parents and lineage with the fairy’s aura being the basis for what could be a one-of-a-kind ability.  So, a child of a fire sprite would have fire powers, but they may only be able to cover their hands in flames or resist extreme heat.

Feykin are elemental in nature, which can cause some issues.  This can lead to difficulty in certain environments and an instinctive distrust of anything that works with an opposing element.  They can also be hurt more easily by spells and weapons that utilize an opposing energy.  For example, a Feykin with water powers will have trouble surviving in a desert and become combative with any fire-based beings.  This issue is why the jungles have become a haven for them.  It is an environment teeming with natural energies that can feed all types of fairies and Feykin.  Cities can be beneficial for many Feykin as well, but those that come from the wilder species, like dryads, will become more open to diseases if they are away from nature for too long.

You might be wondering if there is anything special about the conceiving of a Feykin.  Not really since it comes down to sex just like any other species.  Even the types that reproduce by taking aura from non-fairies can have a hybrid through physical sex.  It’s rare that this happens, but it’s possible if certain conditions are met.  There are also cases where magic is used to fix the size difference, but relationships between small fey and bigger creatures is rare.  In both cases, the baby is carried to term under the biological rules of the non-fairy.  For example, a river nymph typically gives birth within 4 months.  If she is carrying a Feykin that is part human then it’s 9 months.  This is very dangerous if the non-fairy is no longer around because fairies don’t know much about the breeding habits of other species.

Now, I said at the beginning that Feykin aren’t found outside of the jungles.  This is really a half-truth because there are hybrids around Windemere.  The uniqueness of the southern jungle variety is that they have congregated to form their own culture.  While those in other lands will define themselves as their non-fairy ancestor or a hybrid, the jungle ones say Feykin.  This denotes that they are related to fairies and accept both sides of their origin.  It’s a choice to avoid assimilation into the surrounding cities and cultures where they don’t feel they 100% belong and make one from the ground up.  In a way, this is the opposite of the elves who refuse to create a central government or city, but lives among the other species.

One question is definitely going to come up in Charms of the Feykin.  How will they handle being exposed to outsiders, especially ones that tend to bring trouble wherever they go?  This could force them to reveal themselves to the rest of the world or pull even further away.  Due to recent events in the jungle, there is a lot of fear and anger within the Feykin and their fate can go either way.

20 Questions with N.A. Granger

Unknown's avatarDon Massenzio

Today, I’m excited to sit down with mystery writer N.A. Granger. She has a very interesting background in writing that eventually led her to writing mysteries. She is going to share some of her work, her inspiration and a bit about herself in this edition of 20 Questions.

Q1) When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I wish I could describe a light bulb moment or swear I came out of the womb wanting to write! The real truth is, because I spent my career as a bench scientist (and teacher), I actually was a writer as an academic – manuscripts, reviews, book chapters and books. Obviously creative, but formulaic and not the let-your-mind-wander-where-it-will sort of writing. I vowed when I had time (not until I retired, as it turned out) to just write what I wanted to write, and I put a writing mystery book…

Excerpt: Unwanted Visitor

We pass by the high school, and stop to stare at a news ticker on one building. Someone apparently broke into this Bunsen’s place and stole a couple things. Something called Dolorex, and one of those collars mom created. When she finds out about that one, mom splits from our group and goes…not sure where she’s heading, if it’s to the lab or this Bunsen’s place, but I can tell she’s in a hurry.

“Hey…what gives?” I ask.

“I need to look into something at Bunsen’s,” mom says, ears folded back.

Her voice is shaky, as she starts running quicker than I’d expect someone in heels to be able to run.

The rest of our time out consists of walking around the city some more. I’m hoping everything’s okay with mom. She seemed panicked, but then, if something I’d worked on were stolen, I’d probably be the same way. No Jesse sightings, I’m happy to say. Nothing much to report here for now. And for the first time in a while, I feel some level of safe. Then again, it probably helps that I’m around three badasses.

It’s around 10 that we finally get back to the house. But something…

Something feels off as we step toward the front door. There’s a box waiting on the steps. And some kind of red liquid is all over the edges of the box in question.

The fuck…?

Spencer takes a few cautious steps toward the box.

“Any idea what it is?” Gemmy asks when he picks it up.

Shortly after lifting up the box, he yelps and drops it.

“Blood…” he mutters, shaking.

There’re tears in his eyes and a tremor to his voice. Yvette is the first to rush to his side, picking up an envelope that’s on the ground from the box. She rips it open, clears her throat, and reads it.

“Dearest 42,

“I do so miss the time we spent together. You and that monkey friend of yours. He looked adorable taped up as he was. And you? Oh, the expressions of terror in your eyes. How I wish I could recreate them.

“I count the days until that moment comes. You will know fear like you’ve never felt before. If you contact the police about this, I’ll find out. And that will only force me to make my move faster, and your suffering will take much longer.

“Looking forward to seeing both of you boys soon.

“Jesse.

“P.S.: You’ve got a lovely home. And enjoy the gift.”

Fuck…

I can only imagine what kind of sicko gift she’d left for us.

Whose head is it?

Yvette carefully opens the box, before turning around and running to throw up tonight’s dinner. Against all better judgment, I step over and see a headless corpse of a monkey in there. As Gemmy steps forward to try and get a look, I turn to her and pull her into a hug.

“You don’t wanna see what’s in there…” I tell her. “Trust me, you don’t…”

“…What do you think she meant by ‘You’ve got a lovely home”…?” Spencer asks.

Things are silent for a moment. And then Ivy pulls Spencer away from the house.

“I can still sense her…” she says.

Meet Guest Author Evie Gaughan…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

IMG_0891I didn’t always know I wanted to be a writer, but I always knew I was a storyteller.  Since I can remember, my party piece was always telling a story.  Thankfully, I had very indulgent aunts, uncles and cousins, who would sit for one of my ‘performances’ and give me a big round of applause at the end.  I recently met a school-friend who reminded me of the poetry recitals we used to give at lunchtime – all our own material!  So I suppose I’ve always enjoyed entertaining people with made-up stories, but the writing came much later.

My writing is really inspired by half-formed ideas, fragments of conversations and snippets that accrue over the years.  Sometimes I’ll be trawling the net looking for something and alight on a completely different piece of information, which sends me on all sorts of tangents!  History is my passion and this definitely…

I Swear I’ll Talk About Writing Here

This week has been busy with non-writing stuff and just plain exhausting.  Not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.  Though, an accident when working on the new entertainment center comes to mind.  We were moving it out of the way and I didn’t get my foot to safety.  Sliced a toe from the side and along the cuticle and that’s kind of how the week started.  The humidity came back too.  By the way, I’m writing this on Wednesday because I have no idea how around I’ll be until September.  (2 zoo trips and a Halloween Costume Hunt have occurred since writing this.  If you get whimpers and groans as responses then here is why.)

Let’s get into the writing, which is going to be kind of a rant.  It’s difficult to do this because, as stated many times, I have a lot of lurkers.  These are people that will read my sadder posts and contact me with a ‘sorry/not sorry’ message that puts me in an awkward position.  In fact, pointing this out might trigger the reaction.  We’ve kind of established that I’ve been depressed for most of this year because nothing has gone right and much of it stems from the writing situation.  This would be where several people stop reading and jump to the comments to give advice or suggest taking a break.  Sorry to come off like an ass here, but it gets rather frustrating when that’s the most common suggestion even after you explain why it won’t help.

The truth is that I feel like I’ve spent most of 2016 on a break or in stasis.  With my wife losing her job in 2015, things took a bad turn and other events compounded on that.  How does this relate to writing?  Well, I started this year being told that I have to prove myself in order to continue writing and publishing in 2017.  Yet, I’m constantly running into obstacles and situations that knock me back.  I recently noticed that two of the smaller promo sites I use have been silent for a while.  I can’t find any interviews that I haven’t already done and I lack the time to jump into a review group.  I’m struggling to balance so much and it feels like something crashes to the ground every week.  All of this is adding to the stress that I’ll have to close up shop next year.

I know people are going to say that I can balance writing and a full-time job, but I’ve already proven that it can’t happen for me.  Hell, that’s what I tried for 10 years and the full-time job won every fucking time.  Not everyone has a life where they can balance these things.  For me, it’s one or the other and I know I can’t come back to writing if I walk away at this point.  It would be starting from scratch, but with several forgotten books to revive in some fashion.  That’s if I could ever come back since retirement these days is almost laughable for anyone getting a job now.  This sounds dark, but I really feel like I’m staring at a firing squad and I don’t know whether to be angry, sad, or accept that there were too many things against me.

I’ve spent the last month trying to think of ways to boost my books to a level that will get people off my fucking back.  As much as I hate to be an author who focuses entirely on the money side of things, I’m being shoved there out of survival.  Yet, I’m trying to stay true to myself and that isn’t meshing well.  I can’t figure out what the next step is aside from staying the course, but I have no idea what that would be.  Can’t draw well enough to make Windemere comics or animate to do YouTube episodes based on the books.  That’s really as far as I went because I think adding a second medium would be useful in promoting the books and vice versa.  Still, I have no idea how to do that.

A lot of this feels like stuff I’ve said before and I feel trapped.  These goal posts have become venting platforms because this is what’s on my mind.  This week was a family one, so I don’t have any writing stuff to report and I get backlash if I bring up the private stuff or post too many kid pictures.  Will things change in September when Charms of the Feykin is out, my son is back in school, and I get to work on Path of the Traitors?  I have no idea.  Maybe I’ve taken too many hits this year and I need a big stroke of good luck to turn things around.  God knows I’ve had enough bad luck to last until 2018.

I have no goals for next week.  School is still out and I have no idea what my schedule will be.  Maybe I’ll get to fiddle with an outline.  More then likely, I’ll exhaust myself and stare at a notebook every night while my mind wanders back to this topic.  I really don’t know what I’m going to do once 2017 hits because it seems I’m expected to make a decision that involves walking away.  The only hope I have is that I can write the rest of Legends of Windemere before the end of the year, so I can still publish them.  Not really sure if that’s going to happen either unless I go back-to-back on 14 and 15.  Maybe a week between them to work on the outline.  Going to stop rambling.  Later.

Writing Relationships in a Series

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

Charms of the Feykin evolves the Luke/Sari and Nyx/Delvin relationships, which have been bouncing back and forth for a while.  There’s really nothing else I can say without divulging where the two pairings go.  I will say finishing this book felt like a weight was taken off my shoulders.  Primarily because both roads have been very rocky and messy, which comes from my belief that most relationships are like this.  Even those that don’t involve love can hit a snag and test the two sides.

Writing relationships is a challenge that I never expected.  When I conceived the romantic and friendship paths, I didn’t realize how hard it was to maintain these things.  If you keep it simple and untainted for the whole series then it gets dull.  Constant monkey-wrenches become tedious to the point where you might kill the relationship entirely.  Honestly, I thought I could keep things bouncing around until the final volume where closure was given.  It was around Curse of the Dark Wind that I discovered it couldn’t be drawn out that long.

Thankfully, Charms of the Feykin was giving me trouble in terms of story.  I didn’t know what I was aiming for since it was coming off as a typical dungeon crawl.  Then I created The Merchant of Nevra Coil and The Mercenary Prince, which bought me time and gave me the tools to set up the ‘endings’.  I didn’t entirely realize it at the time, but a benefit of writing things so far in advance is that I can adjust.  Everything fell into place, including the challenges that these characters would endure.  It also gave more meat to a book that I could barely keep a solid title on.

I’m tempted to give a few pointers here, but the romance aspect of Legends of Windemere is where my confidence flickers.  I know where I’m going and like how they’re coming out.  The problem is that these are the stories that come under a lot of scrutiny.  I’ve seen so many different reactions to fictional relationships.  Readers may love it, despise it, want a different one, hate there being a romance in the first place, and any number of scenarios.  The one thing I have learned from this is:

People take love very seriously.

I’ve been there too.  As an author, I want to get readers invested in my characters and make a connection.  This is an important aspect toward giving them depth and the relationships with other characters helps with the investment.  Human beings have friends, family, lovers, and enemies, so those that exist in fiction need these too.  It runs the risk of people taking sides when relationships flounder or making assumptions that one pairing would work better than another.  Look at Avatar: The Last Airbender to see how many varieties of ‘shipping’ can emerge even when the final answer has been obvious from the beginning.  This is simply how things work.

The only piece of advice I can give an author when it comes to romance is to do what you feel is right for the story and characters.  Some people will disagree while others will cheer and others will ignore it completely.  With everything, the final decision comes down to what the author feels is right.  Romances are simply some of the hardest choices to make and defend.
