A Week of Rings, Dings, and Bings

Seriously, why was the phone ringing so much this week?  Good thing I didn’t try to pick a day to crawl back into bed after the kid got on the bus.  Wait, I did and it failed miserably, which might be why I’m a little crotchety this weekend.  It’s a 3-day weekend too, so we’ll see what happens.  Today is uneventful, birthday tomorrow, and maybe a family outing on Monday.  Depends on the weather holding.  Honestly, it just feels so draining to even think of doing stuff.

That’s why I’m considering bumming around next week and diving into the final edits of Books 14 and 15 during the first week in June.  Next weekend is the 12 year anyway, so I’ve got to focus on getting tickets to Wonder Woman.  Be nice to have energy for that, but I’ve been running on empty for a while.  Every time I gather enough focus and energy, something happens to knock me back down.  The phone rings to tear me from my thoughts, someone interrupts me for the same effect, or a mess turns up that I have to clean.  Why can’t people just think and observe before taking action?  That would make my life a little easier.

The big accomplishment was finishing the final edits on The Life & Times of Ichabod Brooks and getting some thumbs up on the blurbs.  This cleared the week for me to unravel and reorganize the superhero stuff.  It still feels weird taking them out of Windemere, but I guess they didn’t belong there anyway.  Maybe I’ll use tomorrow to show what I’ve come up with and see if anybody has any thoughts on the whole thing.  This is the last week where Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday is free.  The first 3 sections of Protecting Bedlam have been scheduled and I’m still nervous.  Will people like it?  Will people read it?  Will it give the published books any traction?  I got those ready this week too.  Oh, and all the July posts that revolve around Ichabod, including a future call for questions for him.

Guess I should mention one problem that’s come up with all of my fiddling.  There was a character who I teamed up with a Windemere secondary character, which created an interesting idea.  The problem is that she really needs to go with the other superheroes, which means she takes all of her story pieces with her.  This leaves the secondary who shows up in a few series with half a story.  It was going to be an interesting upgrade to make this villain/ally/rival/sidekick the star of his own story.  So, I have to sit down and figure out what to do because removing the whole thing means he gets blocked from the final battle of Windemere.  Even worse, the story was put in the middle of a notebook, which has it’s last grouping of pages reserved for that final battle.  I can’t fill it out until I know all the players.  Keep making more headaches for myself, so maybe next week will help me clear this one a bit.  I still have a bunch of characters who I can re-purpose for a new story to make everything work . . . maybe.

Have to admit that it does feel weird making this kind of progress.  Been a while since I worked on this type of project with any focus.  *phone rings*  Guess I can’t even say the friggin’ word.  There are still a few characters that aren’t jumping back.  Clyde and the Dawn Fangs work too well and Mab’s presence in Legends of Windemere: The Mercenary Prince locks them in.  The super spy is going to stick around because it might be interesting to have that type in a fantasy setting.  Going to miss them though, but I’m going with my gut here.  This does bring a few other series into question: Tome of the Fae, Zombie Girl (currently in Sin’s series), and Phi Beta (Might go off on its own thing) are a few.  Really launched a missile into a few things.  Yeah, I need next week for this one goal:

  1. Repair the damage!

Add-on:  Dear god, it’s worse than I thought.

Powers of the Windemere Lands: Adorable Adventurers

Dragon Age Oracle

Don’t let the title fool you.  While some adventurers are adorable, very few of them should be trifled with.  At the very least, remember to give them a treat before petting them on the head.  Now, these characters can fall into all of the themes, but you tend to see them function predominantly on land.  A sea adventure or flying castle might turn up, but these people do a lot of walking in Windemere.  You can’t really pigeonhole them either considering they aren’t an organized group.  So, how can they be considered the third power of land?

In Allure of the Gypsies, Duke Solomon and Luke Callindor have a slight ‘encounter’ that threatens to become heated.  It doesn’t and leads to a conversation where the Duke says something that many leaders in Windemere believe.  Adventurers have the ability to change history in ways that kings and queens could only dream of.  There’s a lot of red tape and political thinking behind a ruler’s actions unless they decide to simply go charging at an enemy.  This isn’t the case with adventurers who are the ones that see a problem and set about fixing it.  Kingdoms have been altered due to the actions of adventurers, which isn’t always a good thing.  Bards have a lot of stories that involve a hero who means well and fails.

Contrary to the name, Windemere adventurers don’t always travel. It is more of a term used for people that get involved in events and have no loyalty to a kingdom or career path.  This is where they differ from a soldier who fights for country and a mercenary who fights for money.  An adventurer may be motivated by those things, but most of them want one of two things.  First, is the desire to do good by righting a wrong.  This is your simplistic hero adventurer.  Second, is a craving for adventure that tends to come with some desire for fame.  They can be spurred into action by just about anything too.  Every adventurer has their own story to tell and path to follow.

One has to remember that Windemere has a big destiny/free will system that is directed by Gabriel.  Too much of one can create an imbalance and the world will do whatever it takes to fix things.  Adventurers are the most common agents of destiny, free will, and system repair.  Here are examples for each one:

  1. Destiny- The champions who have been chosen by the gods.
  2. Free Will- Ichabod Brooks who chooses his jobs without influence.
  3. System Repair- A future character that has risen to undo destiny getting more pull than free will.

All three of these types will have some level of impact on Windemere.  This ranges from saving the entire world to rescuing a single person, which are all seen as important victories in the eyes of the adventurer.  Of course, each one has a different idea of scale in terms of adventure.  This isn’t an organized group like the armies and mercenaries.  The closest thing to this are the monster hunters who are considered an offshoot of the mercenary lifestyle.  So, the adventurers are hard to predict and both good and evil forces tend to keep an eye out for them.  It isn’t uncommon for warlords, thieves, and necrocasters to maintain lists of anyone who might wander into their territory and start trouble.  Needless to say, Ichabod Brooks tends to be in the top 3 even long after his retirement.

Silly Willie, on #LisaBurtonRadio

coldhandboyack's avatarEntertaining Stories

Welcome to this week’s edition of Lisa Burton Radio. The only show that interviews the characters from books you love. I’m your host, Lisa the robot girl, and today, my special guest is Cautious Craig, who recently took a vacation to Cape Town, South Africa. “Welcome to the show, Craig. You look so smart in your suit and tie but what is that funny noise and what are you sitting on?”

“Hi Lisa, thank you for having me over for a visit. I chose this tie myself. Dad said I shouldn’t get the one with aeroplanes all over it but I really like aeroplanes, especially after our holiday to Cape Town. Mom made me bring Willy with me for the interview. Willy is only three years old and he is very naughty and spoils everything. I am sitting on him and have my hand over his mouth so that he…

Powers of the Windemere Lands: Menacing Mercenaries

Arilyn Moonblade (Matt Wilson)

First of all, I did go into details about the Mercenary Life back in December of 2015 HERE.

Yet, I can’t leave them out of this weekly topic because they are a big factor when it comes to big military encounters.  Kingdoms, villages, armies, and individuals hire these people for jobs.  The reason is because they can do more than a regular army.  As much as they hate to admit it, mercenaries can skirt treaties and certain laws to put a quick end to hostilities.  Many try not to get involved in deals that require unsavory actions, but the career has always had a soiled reputation.  It takes a lot of work for a mercenary to become know as an honorable agent instead of a less subtle assassin or expendable goon.

There are two big mercenaries in the Legends of Windemere series.  One is Delvin Cunningham who had an easier time establishing his reputation.  This is because he was trained by a respected teacher and he took a risk in his mercenary career.  While it was known that he could be tough and intimidating, Delvin never took jobs that harmed innocent people.  He demonstrated that he had a conscience and would say no to orders even if it put him at odds with his team.  After a while, his friends learned to trust his judgment because they would see their own reputations improve.  Better jobs with a safer and higher exposure level came to them.

Now, Delvin would not be able to do this without the other mercenary who came before him.  Selenia Hamilton began at a time where women were soldiers, but those that went mercenary tended to be thieves and casters.  She grabbed the entire mercenary world by the face and dragged it into her vision.  This is why they have a central town for communication, more respect as a profession, and an overall leadership in Ralian known playfully as the Mercenary Royal Family.  These four mercenaries aren’t related, but they have earned the King, Queen, Prince, and Princess titles, which helps them with jobs.  Selenia did this by starting with a small group and making an impact then amassing the biggest mercenary army history had seen to that point.  Tzefira, the current Mercenary Queen, probably has her beat in numbers.  These large armies are expensive to hire, but are seen as important factors in war because you don’t want your enemy to be the one to get them.  On the plus side, there aren’t many mercenary armies out there.  Five or six at most.

This unaffiliated faction certainly makes an impact, but they do lack one thing that the armies have.  They need conflict to survive.  Most mercenaries have no second job or government paycheck.  If a mercenary takes on a guard position then they are made stationary, which makes it harder to find freelance work.  They may do this in large cities, but it puts the other job at risk.  So many become seasonal or find easy sources of money like thievery or underground fights.  There’s also no easy retirement with most mercenaries either dying, retiring due to injury, or crossing a line that gets them put in jail.  Selenia is an exception since she quit to start a school, but her reason for quitting was a major loss that haunts her to this day.  So, there is a higher risk of mental trauma when you’re a mercenary.

In regards to the three ‘Powers of the Land’, I would put the mercenaries in the middle of the other two.  They get involved with the armies of Windemere and possess a similar role when it comes to battles.  Yet, they’re freelance and move about like the third force that will be mentioned on Friday.  This is why a mercenary can easily move into one of the other two categories.

Opening Scene: Ichabod Brooks & Zaria’s Kiss

Ichabod Brooks

“Thank you so much for accepting this job, Mr. Brooks,” the middle-aged man says as he hands over a cloth-covered bundle. A salty breeze forces him to curl his cloak tight around his body. “That package holds some special tools for your journey. My family has guarded them for centuries, so know that my trust and respect in you goes further than your contract. I’m sorry that I can’t stay here and await your return. I need to get back to my father, but we’re just over that hill. As I explained in the message to your wife, he is very ill and has always wanted to see Zaria’s Kiss. He was one of her most devout until the age sickness took his mind. Now, all he talks about is that artifact. Maybe it can cure him or, at the very least, let him pass on in peace. As his son, I want to make his final wish come true, but I lack the skills and strength to reach the lost temple. Please do your best, Mr. Brooks, and I will understand if you return empty-handed. If I’m unwilling to risk my life for my father then I shouldn’t expect you to go beyond what makes you comfortable.”

“Focus on your family and leave this to me,” Ichabod proudly declares while he opens the bundle. Pocketing a small key and a leathery map, he politely hands back the gold coins. “I have enough of those to get me through the next few days. Besides, this is dangerous and I should only take what I need. Extra coins will only be more weight down there. Honestly, I was hired to find Zaria’s lost temple when I was younger. Always thought it was underground, but never thought it had fallen into the ocean and was still being protected. Never had any luck and my employer ended up going to jail for murdering his business rivals, so the contract was nullified. Always wanted another crack at this challenge. If I had to name the job that got away, it would certainly be this one. So, thank you for trusting me with this. I promise not to let you and your father down.”

Patting the man on the shoulder, Ichabod heads toward a nearby cliff that he would never have picked out as a safe way to the coast below. From the landside view, the spot looks like a crumbling edge that curves downward with no safe handholds. The dark-skinned adventurer remembers passing by the area by boat and how the cliffs appeared to be sheer walls of smooth rock. Repeatedly tapping the ends of an amber torque on his neck, Ichabod stops when his vision is enhanced for distance. He can barely make out the faint outline of a glowing star, the Purity Goddess’s symbol, in the weatherworn edge. Returning his eyes to normal, he is sure that even if a person found the way down, they would fail without the tools he was just handed. With a wide smile, the adventurer slips on his breathing ring and checks to make sure the bluish green coral is not cracked.

“Get back in your cave, boulder brain!”

“Go kiss a sea urchin, bilge breath!”

“At least they’re nicer to look at than you.”

“Better conversationalists than you.”

“Don’t you have a pile of dirt to roll in?”

“Shouldn’t you be home splashing in a bathtub?”

Ichabod groans as his two companions begin to wrestle, neither of them noticing that their mutual friend has arrived. Being stockier and taller, Dex Guzbern quickly gets the upper hand and pins his opponent to the ground. The red-bearded dwarf grunts when he is kicked in the stomach, but his toned body is able to take the blows. It is when the female gnome flashes a pair of shark-like teeth and bites into his glove that the mountaineer backs away. It takes him a moment to realize that he fell for an illusion and he tries to tackle Meg Velringer again, but the blue-haired inventor has already clambered onto a large boulder. As soon as Dex fuses his grappling hook to the stone, she brandishes two daggers that are covered in barbs that resemble shark skin. Her dark red eyes never blink as she crouches and threatens to destroy the dwarf’s beloved tool. Wearing a strange suit that squeaks whenever she bends and shoes that fan out at the front, the gnome has trouble looking menacing and frowns when she sees that Dex is trying not to laugh at her.

“I assume you two know each other,” Ichabod says as he approaches. Tossing breathing rings to his friends, the adventurer cannot stop himself from grinning. “You two aren’t going to bring me down. This job is very important to me because I’ve wanted it for so long and it’s technically a birthday gift from my wife. Now, are we going to have a problem?”

“Of course we are!” Dex shouts while recoiling his grappling hook. Taking a long sip of ale, he growls when Meg lands next to him. “This woman is rude, abrasive, and totally disrespectful to those of my trade. I don’t care if water can eat away at mountains. That takes time while a boulder can stop a river in an instant. Not to mention we use metal to get through rock and not spitting on it. When you can make a tunnel through a mountain with buckets of water in less time than it takes for my people to use their pickaxes then you can tell me my trade is useless.”

“All of that is far too stupid for me to argue with,” Meg replies with a sigh. Getting a new idea, she pulls out a waterproof notebook and makes a few coded scribbles. “For the record, I never said your trade was useless. Mountains exist and people need to explore them or help others get over them. I simply stated that what you do is not as important as my research. Do you know how many mysteries are in the ocean? More than we can ever count and maybe even some that the gods don’t know about. We can’t even reach most of it without the help of merfolk or sea elves. So much more difficult than climbing a mountain that doesn’t move. You ever fight against a strong riptide while examining a new type of octopus? I’d rather deal with one of your piddly avalanches than that. Why is he even here, Ichabod? We’re going into my world where he’ll only be a hindrance.”

“I sense that I made a mistake,” the adventurer mutters, his head beginning to ache. He rubs his eyes and waits until the pain is gone before facing his companions. “The simple answer is that I need both of you for this job. Dex knows mountains and it doesn’t matter if they’re above ground or in the ocean. He also has more experience with lost ruins than I do. Now, you are here because of you are the best person I know for an undersea adventure. This is an area that I’m sure you will want to investigate, which means you’re just as invested as I am. You wouldn’t let me hear the end of it if I didn’t ask you to join me. All of that being said, I asked both of you here because you are two of my most trusted friends. There is nobody else that I would want on this job than you two. Now, can we be friends?”

Dex is the first to extend his hand for a shake, the dwarf refusing to look the gnome in the eye. “I promise to behave, but I maintain the right to verbally defend myself. It isn’t her blades or fists that worry me. This woman has a tongue that is sharper than obsidian. Seems only fair that I get to throw insults back.”

“Like I would waste my-” Meg begins to say. She stops when the mountaineer clears his throat and nods to where she has her fingers crossed. “Fine. I’ll do my best to restrain my blade-like tongue and treat Mr. Guzbern with respect. All I ask is that he do the same to me. Once we get in the water, it will be my world. Do we have an understanding?”

“Oh, this is going to be a very long journey,” Ichabod groans while gesturing to the cliff. He gives Dex the map and lets the dwarf take the lead while he checks his light blue longbow. “We have to go down this way. I have a key for something, but I figured the map would be better in your hands. Anything there that will help us?”

“It’s a curious one, but I can figure the path out,” Dex replies, turning the parchment around in his hands. He realizes that it is a vertical picture instead of showing a path along the ground, which causes him to whistle. “Haven’t seen one of these in a while. Takes a little time to get used to the scale, but I can see how we get down. Hope nobody is wearing gloves that they’re attached to.”

Chuckling at the confused looks he receives, Dex tucks the map into his sleeve and crawls to the cliff’s edge. He wipes some dirt away from the holy symbol and traces it with his finger in case he has to activate the path. Nothing happens, but he whispers a prayer to Zaria to assure the Purity Goddess that they are not enemies. Satisfied with his preparations, the dwarf slides his hand around the curved edge and pushes into the smooth underside. Letting his stocky body slide over, Dex feels his arm get sucked into the thick mud and grabs a handhold. He does the same with his other arm and swings to plant his feet against the stone. He can feel the surface adhere to his boots, but not with the same stickiness as the mud that he struggles to free himself from. It takes a minute for him to figure out that it is easier to escape when he relaxes his muscles, but the dizzying height makes it difficult to erase all of his tension. Whistling to his friends, the sweating mountaineer leads the way down the strange cliff face.
