Monsters, Magic Items, and Thingies from Ionia and John

Thanks to everyone for playing along with the ‘Monster Maker Fun’.  This is going to be going all week, so let’s kick it off.  First set of nonsense words are from Ionia Martin:

Mastaxe

This is a tiny creature found in the fallen forest of Surdu.  The fur coloration helps them blend into the collapsed trees that it calls home. It’s kind of like a rabbit in that it hops around on powerful legs and directs its movements with a sail-like tail.  The ears that are longer than the Mastaxe’s body twist around each other and their edged ends form a pickaxe.  This is what it uses to burrow straight into the ground by leaping eight feet into the air and coming down with surprising force.  In fact, a Mastaxe is capable of breaking stone if they need to.

Rhinarmor

This is what armor is called when it is made from the hide of the Rhine Bear.  A deadly predator, it is covered in glittering gems that are hard as diamonds.  Unfortunately, they make it impossible for the Rhine Bear to hide and it goes hungry rather often.  The armor has the same issue in that it is durable, but it reflects any light that it catches and is very heavy.

Octobubble

Merfolk of the Second Sea to the Right create this faux beast to protect their eggs.  It is really nothing more than enchanted water and it’s ugly pink coloration is actually the clutch.  It takes the form of a giant octopus, which allows it to strangle creatures and put the corpses in the mass.  The dead are processed into sustenance for the embryos as they grow.  There have been instances where Octobubbles will fight each other.

Shadellum

A precious ore found off the coast of Ov’der.  It’s center is a liquid, which turns warm when mixed with fresh water.  The citizens gather this ore for the harsh winter, which lasts 2 months and is an endless barrage of snow.  A cup of liquid Shadellum can stay warm for a week before hardening into crystal.  These crystals are able to emit a beam of heat when touched by sunlight, so they are placed in the high trees.  People also put them on the end of specially crafted sticks to help them through the mountain passes.

Chainwarlug

A monstrosity with the head of a one-eyed wolf and the body of an amphibious human.  The skin is slimy and brown like a newt, but it is afraid to enter bodies of water.  To stay moist, these creatures stay around waterfalls or chase the rainstorms that roam through the Itygog Valley.  The reason the Chainwarlug hates bodies of water is because it can easily drown. Its arms and legs have holes and resembles links of a chain, so they fear getting caught on debris.  These holes make it easy for predators to get a tight grip on them as well.

Lavasaur

A flying creature that feeds off remains such as carrion and dung.  Originally called the Lavesaur, it has changed through a continued mispronunciation.  The wings are like those of a bat, but the body is wart-covered and sticky. The mouth of this bug-eyed creature is designed to scoop food up without touching the ground.  If it does land then it panics and makes such a racket that nearby predators may mistake it for injured prey.  Unfortunately for the predator, the Lavesaur is highly toxic due to its diet.

Mumbleratt

Another creepy critter, the Mumbleratt looks like a large rat.  In fact, it will mutter this fact to you through the walls of your house.  Repeatedly.  In truth, it’s a type of roach that puts its thick antennae together to form the ‘rat tail’ and has covered its body in fur taken from a real rat.  The reason for this is because it has learned that humans are less likely to smash a rat than a roach.  It hasn’t really figured out that whispering to people in their sleep makes for other problems.  Though the Mumbleratt reproduces through spores that are released when the adult is crushed, so one has to wonder why it does this anyway.

This last one is by John W. Howell:

Meagain

A majestic horse that roams the prairie of Southliver.  Most of them are white and brown, but there have been sightings of black, red, and purple colors.  Unlike other horses, the Meagain gives off an odd glow that is stronger depending on the purity of the spirit.  They are also much more intelligent.  People have been able to communicate clearly with these animals even without a common language.  Meagains are also good problem solvers and those in captivity have been known to pick locks with their narrow tongues.  Avoid getting kicked because they have barbs on their hooves that can deliver a powerful hallucinogen.

About Charles Yallowitz

Charles E. Yallowitz was born, raised, and educated in New York. Then he spent a few years in Florida, realized his fear of alligators, and moved back to the Empire State. When he isn't working hard on his epic fantasy stories, Charles can be found cooking or going on whatever adventure his son has planned for the day. 'Legends of Windemere' is his first series, but it certainly won't be his last.

That was a lot of fun. I especially enjoyed the mumbleratt. I wonder if he goes through the halls mumbling “It’s meagain.”

  4. These are really good. Here is another Rouiaxmust

    • A type of goblin that lives in orchid fields. They can hide easily because they’re as thin as the flowers and their noses can bloom in imitation. Unfortunately, they suffer from stiff necks due to holding an uncomfortable pose for too long. Rouiaxmusts love earthworms and ingest them through sharp-toothed mouths found in the bottom of their twenty-toed feet.

The New Year celebration of the Tertylian people of the Huk region. It only lasts for about an hour because every citizen screams at the sky. Each man, woman, and child yells with all of their might until they pass out. They believe their primal roars will prevent the heavens from falling on the planet and killing every living thing. You might be wondering how this can last for an hour if the go until they pass out. Well, the Tertylian people have lungs that take up 80% of their torso.

This is a reall fun post! I was wondering if Gandalf perhaps didn’t actually use a shadellum whilst walking through the the old dwarf mines… hard to choose a favorite, I think maybe the meagain but that lavasaur is not bad either!
