How to Make a Sexy Character . . . Possibly . . . Don’t Quote Me Here

This is going to be more for genres besides romance and erotica.  Sexuality and sensuality are very important to those genres, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist outside of those styles.  So, here are a few tips that I think help.  Again, I’m not an expert, so I could be horribly wrong.

  1. Describe more than the sexual characteristics of a character.  Sounds weird if you’re aiming for sexuality, but you can move beyond the T&A.  I tend to use the eyes and facial expressions of a character to help here.  Limbs and how they physically move can work too.
  2. A character should talk with a confidence and sensuality.  I’m not talking dirty talk or terrible pick up lines.  Just like in real life, someone who is confident in his or her sexuality will be seen as more attractive.  This isn’t to say the ‘cute and awkward’ character won’t get some attention.  You can only do that for some many characters and so many times though.
  3. Clothes that accentuate a character’s style and appearance.  I’d suggest avoiding slutty unless that’s you’re aim.  For example here, Sari in Legends of Windemere wears flowing skirts.  These give her character a mesmerizing movement pattern and brings attention to her attractive legs.  She also wears shirts with cleavage, but more to boost than blatantly reveal.
  4. I mentioned it earlier, but I’ll say it again: Facial expressions.  Have your characters smirk, grin, leer, ogle, etc.  Humans get a lot out of how the face moves while talking, so implement that into your writing.  For example, Luke Callindor tends to smirk and grin a lot.  It’s a impish expression that denotes his boy-like charm.
  5. A kiss.  This goes a little further than the overall appearance, but the first kiss of a character can be a defining moment.  You an gloss over it.  Nothing wrong with that.  On the other hand, you can describe the kiss and show how passionate the character can be.  Don’t forget that when a person kisses, the rest of the body doesn’t typically stand frozen.  Embrace, touch arms, and simply have the characters do more than lock lips like statues.

Indie Book Advertising: Eat, Sleep, Write

Yahoo Image Search

In my quest to by an Indie Author guinea pig, I’m back with another advertising site that I’ve just started using.  Here is the blurb that will be on my Book Advertising Links page because I don’t feel like writing things twice:

Eat, Sleep, Write

This is big site in terms of scale and there are quite a few things they provide.  They are a big podcast run by Adam Scull as well as a place to post book excerpts, poetry, and other things.  That part is free and you can be offered a lengthy interview too.  They have a $10 Book Plug, which a brief ‘check out this book’ post on their site.  I went for this and submitted Allure of the Gypsies Prologue and did an interview.  They also have Cover Ads that get posted on their site for a $50 a month and you pick from open time periods.  I got this and the choosing a time period instead of now allows me to make this a later advertising move when the book is starting to cool off.  One thing I will mention is that Adam is really fast in getting back to people.  Maybe I got him on a day where he wasn’t very busy, but I heard back maybe thirty minutes after I submitted.  A really good site that I haven’t finished exploring yet.

As previously stated, this is also a podcast and that appears to be one of the main parts of the operation.  So, I could very well be coming late to the party on this.  Still, if you’re like me and this is new to you then go take a look and see what you can see.

Fauxpocalypse

Check out Fauxpocalypse! Available now on Kindle!

MishaBurnett's avatarmishaburnett

Well, this is it.

Fauxpocalypse, a collection of original short fiction, went live on Amazon Kindle at noon today.

This is the culmination of an idea that I had just about a year ago.

Two ideas, really.  The first was about the theme of the end of the world in literature, and that I couldn’t recall any stories about what would happen if the end of the world was predicted, but failed to materialize.

So I set out to write one, and then I realized that I really wanted to read other people’s stories on that theme.

That led to my second idea.  What if, I wondered, I opened up the world I was working on to contributions from all over the internet?

When I started this project I really had no idea just how ambitious the concept was.  In retrospect, this whole thing is profoundly impractical.  A…

The Parts of Sexy Fantasy

Boris Vallejo - 1976 - Tarnsman of Gor

Boris Vallejo – 1976 – Tarnsman of Gor

Originally, I was going to write my opinion on how to write a seductive, sexy character in fantasy fiction.  I’m not an expert on this, but it’s a topic that the debut of Sari has prompted me to think about.  Anyway, I went looking for a good picture to use for that post.  It was a ridiculous search considering everything was barely clothed women.  Even when I typed ‘fantasy art sexy man’, it was predominantly women.  Still, the male pictures that did show up where the same thing too.  In fact, the guys had less clothing than the women.  I do not count strategically placed mist as an article of clothing.  It was a frustrating 15 minute search that led me to change my topic today.

What do you need to make a traditionally sexy fantasy character?  Well, let’s Frankenstein ourselves a pair of hotties:

THE MAN

  1. Rippling muscles in all the right places and a few wrong ones.  Arms and legs are bulging with power, but occasionally it looks like the guy’s neck is able to bench press a Buick.
  2. Long sword or big axe to make sure you have the phallic symbolism.  Imagine those groans of WTF are moans of enjoyment.
  3. Perfect hair even if it’s the ‘rolled out of bed’ look.  Doesn’t matter if he just fought a battle with a helmet on, he’s dreamy.
  4. Butt dimples the size of small children.  Small note: Keep these guys away from small children.
  5. Defined chest muscles with perky nipples.  It’s like these guys are always cold.  That might explain part of #8.
  6. Abs that you want to hit to see how tough they are.  Look flesh-covered armor plating.
  7. The smile . . . HA!  Nobody’s looking at his face.
  8. He should be in furry underwear, skewed loincloth, or butt-naked with something in the way of the ‘important’ part.  Funny how so many of these guys have tiny objects in the way.  Do fantasy worlds promote steroids?

THE WOMAN

  1. Glorious hair that shimmers in the darkness and flows when there’s no breeze.  You just want to curl up in her tresses and ignore her screaming that her scalp hurts from the pulling.
  2. The sexy smile that the artist thought would distract from the clothing composed of one string of spider silk.
  3. THONG!
  4. A butt so firm and round that you start to wonder if she’s smuggling two melons under her . . . okay, you know she’s not doing that.
  5. Legs that are long enough to kick a person from across a small room.  Useful to put them in a stretching, full extension position or curled in a way to help the heels bring attention back to the melon butt.
  6. Stomach flatter than a piece of paper.  This part remains flat even when the back is arched in a way that you question her possession of a functional spine.
  7. Eyes that are either cold or predatory.  I know I’m turned on by a woman with the expression of a zombie (commence Kristen Stewart jokes) or will eat me if she gets even the slightest bit hungry.
  8. Cleavage.  All sorts of cleavage.  Tightly packed so she can double as a nightstand.  Wide apart so her chest is tickling her armpits.  It’s like fantasy women’s chests are made out of play-doh and they have no pain nerves there.  Seriously, it looks like the more uncomfortable the breast position, the ‘sexier’ she’s supposed to be.

A final note: some of these pictures are simply hilarious.

FrontCOVSome of my favourite discoveries this last year have been accidental, and that is certainly the case with the talented author we are featuring here today. Please give a huge welcome to author Joe Gazzam. I think there is a good chance this will not be the last you hear from him. I’m pretty good at these big future judging games, no?

Tell us a little bit about you and your work.

Quick bio:

I was born in Baltimore, MD, grew up in Fort Lauderdale, FL and graduated from the University of Florida. Soon after college, I moved to Los Angeles with one script under my arm, never having been to California in my life and literally knowing no one. Since then, due to good luck and the support of friends and family, I’ve been a working screenwriter (21 Jump Street,
 Barbarella,
Step Up: Revolution, Anubis Tapestry) for 8…

A Character that Doesn’t Work?

Raiden from Metal Gear Solid Series. (Crime of not being Solid Snake.)

Raiden from Metal Gear Solid Series. (Crime of not being Solid Snake.)

This is a quick question for authors and readers out there.

What do you do when a character that is needed for the main plot simply isn’t working for the readers?  They end up hating the character for not being a certain way or have issues with certain aspects.  For example, the character comes from a culture of open relationships (this will be touched on in a post next week).

Do you ditch the character and pray the plot doesn’t suffer?  Not sure I can do that without removing the climactic event of the entire series.  Actually, I know I can’t do that.

So, what do you do when you run into something like this?
