That Emotional Scene

As an author, I still have scenes in my books that make me choke up or get energized.  These are scenes that I’ve looked over many times, but they still give me chills.  As a reader, there are scenes that I will never tire of and get the same reaction.  An odd mixture of sadness and pride at Boromir’s Fall, concern for Ender Wiggin when things are stacked against him, and so many other memorable scenes.

So, I have some simple questions for people:

  1. For authors- What are some of the most emotional scenes you have ever written?
  2. For readers- What are some of the most emotional scenes that always get a reaction out of you?
  3. What makes a scene emotional to you?

I think this will be fun and it is in no way connected to me not having any idea which character or WIP I could post about.

Legends of Windemere: Beginning of a Hero – Charles E. Yallowitz [Book Review]

A great and honest review of Beginning of a Hero!

wonderinggrace's avatarOf Musings and Wonderings

legends of windemere Beginning of a Hero tells the story of Luke Callindor, a young adventurer determined to prove his worth outside of his family name. His chance comes when he meets a royal messenger, and convinces him to hire Luke to protect the heir of Duke Solomon. Unfortunately, Luke has no information on what the heir looks like, no clues as to who they might be except that they are currently at the Hamilton Military Academy, a school run by former mercenary Selenia Hamilton. Luke has to avoid suspension, discovery and death at the hands of a demonic assassin, all while trying to work out who, exactly, the heir is, so he can protect them.

Admittedly, it took a while to really get into the book. Mainly because it’s a style that I (and I suspect most people) aren’t used to, the use of third person present tense. If not done well…

Tell us a little about you and your writing career.

I was told at a very young age I would never be a writer.
I have a learning disability called dyslexia and process things differently then other people do.
Reading was very difficult for me and at first I couldn’t do it. Now you’ll never find me without a book.
Writing was hard too, letters didn’t seem to make sense.
Thirty-five years after I was told I could never write, I took our three daughters to lunch and a street reporter approached us. “What…

Zaria: Goddess of Sucking It Up (That Doesn’t Sound Right, but TOO LATE!)

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

Zaria is the Goddess of Purity and works as the opposite side of the coin as Gabriel.  She has some more interesting themes in later books and series, so I only have one here.  It’s actually a very big one, which is why it gets a post.

Dealing with the Lesser of Two Evils

Zaria doesn’t like Gabriel, but they’re partners in whatever it is going on.  In fact, her actions in the first book force him to defend her, which puts them in the position that they get sealed together if they break the law of influence.  Imagine being locked away for eternity with someone who you despise.  That’s what hangs over their head, so Zaria sucks up her pride and works with Gabriel.

It’s an interesting partnership that develops and defines her.  As much as she hates him and some of what he does, Zaria is quick to support him.  Yet, she still stands up to Gabriel when she feels it’s for the good of all.  By the beginning of the 7th book, they’re actually getting along.  Even Gabriel manages to put aside his disdain and show some compassion toward what she’s going through due to spoilers.

Since this is such a small post, I’ll end with a question:  What do you think of polar opposites working together?  Does it always have to end with either understanding or betrayal?

MEMOIRS OF A DILETTANTE VOLUME ONE – COVER REVEAL!

Big cover reveal.

Unless you have been unconscious for a few months, you must know Helena Hann-Basquiat the author. She has a wonderful blog which is listed below and has also put together her volume one (oh goodie it means there is a volume two for those who love her) of her memoirs. This is really good news for the literate of the world since there may be stunning revelations as to who this person is anyway. In typical fashion  for a Dilettante, you are treated to the vision of the cover before being able to go inside.

Memoirs of a Dilettante is a collection of reminiscences, following Helena Hann-Basquiat, a self-proclaimed dilettante who will try anything just to say that she has, and her twenty-something niece, who she has dubbed the Countess Penelope of Arcadia, in their off-beat antics in such places as common as the local McDonald’s or…
