Hello. You’re watching PBS, and this is Masterpiece Theater. Okay, maybe it isn’t the real Masterpiece Theater, which features Downton Abbey and Sherlock. But I’m pleased to welcome authors who have written their own masterpieces. With me today and tomorrow is the wise and prolific Charles Yallowitz, author of the epic fantasy series, Legends of Windemere. Woot! You might know Charles from his blog of the same name.

Three books of this series have already been published.

Aren’t those covers awesome? Kudos go to the cover artist: Jason Pedersen. Also, throughout this post are characters from the series, illustrated by Kayla Matt. The next book in the series is Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune. Here’s a synopsis:

Nyx still has nightmares about casting the genocide spell in Hero’s Gate. Every night her heart is gripped by the sensation of hundreds of goblins…

Should You Self-Publish?

For most authors, the decision of whether to self-publish or search for a traditional publisher is a tough one. I wrestled with this decision (it fought like a crocodile) in the years leading up to 2008. Even after self-publishing multiple books in 2008 (I had one completely written and the material for several others already well-prepared), I continued to wrestle the crocodile for another seven months. Then sales of two of my books erupted and later the next summer I launched a series that became popular enough that I no longer questioned my decision.

That’s what you hope for, when you’re wondering which route to take. You’re hoping that a day will come when you no longer look back over your shoulder, wondering about the other road (that road you didn’t take is such a clichéd road, it really isn’t worth any anguish).

Not an Easy Way Out

Self-publishing isn’t…

Hero with a Hobby

Superman (Yahoo Image Search)

Superman (Yahoo Image Search)

Did you know that Luke Callindor plays the ocarina and Nyx can sing?  Sari is obviously a dancer, but she dreams of learning how to make candy.  Aedyn is a reader, Nimby whittles, and Fritz studies creature physiology.  Selenia Hamilton enjoys darts.  All of these hobbies and interests, but only a few of them get into the books.

Truthfully, it gets strange when one has a tiny detail like this and tries to force it into a story.  A character relaxing can get away with things like this such as Luke resting under a tree and playing music.  Others might mindlessly slip into their indulgence when distracted like Nyx.  It’s all about subtlety with these hobbies because they’re not plot essential.  So, contriving a situation for this ability to come out and has no impact on the story can be an issue with readers.  Remember that these are typically quirks to give a little more realism to the characters.

Realism is the key here.  Think about yourself and people you know.  You have your job or some kind of career path then you have hobbies.  The hobbies do not always coincide with the job.  Most times they’re an activity one does to relax from the job, so it doesn’t exist in the same vein.  Some hobbies work entirely off of being lazy and low activity like watching a favorite show.  For characters, these activities can help an author get an idea of personality and demeanor.  Even if it doesn’t get into the story, you have an idea of what kind of person would be into the hobby.  For example, a character who paints in his or her spare time can be seen as observant, creative, and patient.  Much of this comes off an author’s personal interpretation of a hobby and what is needed to enjoy it.

You might be wondering how to pick a hobby for your hero.  First, realize that this isn’t a necessary thing, so don’t force yourself.  Not everyone has a hobby and if you don’t see a point in doing this when it might not appear in the book then don’t worry.  Now if you’re going through with it then examine your character.  If it’s a physical activity then make sure they can do it and the same goes for mental activity.  An ogre who is shown to be stupid shouldn’t have the hobby of acing crossword puzzles unless he’s really smart and hiding it.  It’s a simple rule really, which makes adding a hobby to a character fairly easy and low stress.

My favorite method for choosing a hobby is brainstorming.  I list hobbies while imagining the character performing them.  Whatever feels the most natural for them is what I go with and many times it will be something surprising.  Nyx having a talent for singing was surprising when I was listing because it originally felt more like a Sari thing.  Yet, I slipped it into a few scenes and it oddly worked.  I think it brings out the vulnerable and sensitive side that she keeps hidden so much.  Maybe that’s another use for these hobbies if you have a deeper character.  They have the persona that is shown on the surface, but these interests stem to a secret self that might not be something they share easily.

So, any characters that you wrote or like have a unique hobby?

Another Dark Day

Did I rise too high
Glowed too brightly
Voicing the positive dreams
While you focused on the horrors
Preaching mediocrity
Because my goals are beyond you
Reminding me of failings
As if they should shatter all I want
As if I am the only one to blame
Not the broken one
Not the decades
Of telling me my faults
Gods forbid I grow my wings
And crow about my victories
After all
I’ve had so few within my span

Themes of Legends of Windemere: Prodigy of Rainbow Tower

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen

Cover Art by Jason Pedersen

The second book of the Legends of Windemere series, this one is rough.  While Beginning of a Hero was very lighthearted and dealt with Luke rising to the challenge, Prodigy of Rainbow Tower takes a baseball bat to the character’s heads.  Not in a way that seems cruel, but some of the events that the heroes grow through are kind of cringe-worthy to me.  We have death, betrayal, helplessness, frustration, battling egos, fear, and misery alongside the humor and camaraderie.  This isn’t to say all the themes are dark, but they’re definitely rougher than the first book.

Hitting Your Limits

The big one that comes about in this series is the realization of limits.  Luke learns that he won’t always win.  Nyx learns that a person with her power should be careful about slipping.  Both get some major repercussions and shocks to their system, but I’ll admit that Nyx gets it worse.  Then again, she does worse.  Yet, this isn’t just about reaching your limits.  It’s about what one does when that happens.  Does a hero keep going, freak out, get depressed, or turn away from what they’re doing?  All four of these options appear in some form by the end of the book.

Friendship

This was a big theme in the first book, so it isn’t a surprise that it continues.  Luke and his friends need to depend more on each other because they don’t have Selenia and her academy to back them up.  Those bonds that appeared in the first book are going to get tested and be what keeps the heroes going.  Also, Nyx developing friendships with the characters has to happen.  She’s difficult and you can tell she hasn’t had many friends in her life.  So, the blossoming ‘brother/sister’ connection between Luke and Nyx is an important part to this story.  In fact, I would say that they have the most solid relationship in the series.  It’s interesting to see how they get to that point.

Rivalries

A minor theme here is the existence of rivalries.  Luke faces the Hellfire Elf again at some point, which is an on-going feud.  The rivalry between Nyx and Trinity starts here too.  I enjoy this because both characters take a lot of growth from their connection.  It isn’t a hate feud either since they’ve finally found a worthy opponent.  Unlike a lot of the hero/villain rivalries in the series, Nyx and Trinity have the one where they respect each other.  Downside here is that I can’t always get them to do more than fling insults at each other the last few encounters.

See The World!

A big part of Legends of Windemere is to set the stage for future series.  Luke and friends will be the ones to kick off an Age of Heroes in Windemere, which opens the door for a lot of other characters like Darwin Slepsnor and Sin.  Prodigy of Rainbow Tower is a traveling adventure, so you get to see more of the area and the various species.  While this might not be a theme, it is an important piece of the overall series.

So, anybody who read the book think up any other themes?  A part of the book you really enjoyed?
