Talking Animals: Yay or Nay or Meh?

Anthropomorphism– the attribution of human form or behavior to an object, animal.  I.E.- Anything done by Disney.

I think most of us grew up with something along these lines.  Whether it be a singing mouse, a trouble-making Wabbit, a lasagna-eating cat, and so many other characters, we’ve seen an anthropomorphized animal.  Today, many people think this is entirely about physical alterations and not the behavior.  I believe there is another term, but I forgot what it was and couldn’t find it on the Internet.

I’ve always found it strange when people argue over this topic.  Some feel that talking animals bring down the maturity of a story.  They cite Alice in Wonderland as if it’s a wholesome story and not a literary acid trip.  I’ve even run into some readers who believe every fantasy world needs some type of talking animal.  To be fair, they count dragons here.  Long ago, I got into a debate with someone who thought every world with magic has talking animals because a wizard set out to enchant all of them.  This person meant EVERY world and there was no questioning how there would always be a wizard with this bizarre fetish. As if Gandalf and Radagast got stoned and went on a bender in the forests, which is oddly believable after seeing the movies.  Finally, you have people who simply don’t care, which is the majority.

Personally, I think it all depends on the delivery, which is a phrase that should be inscribed on my chest.  I always say this because it’s true.  Nearly every literary trick depends on how the author does it.  A talking animal can fit into a world of magic, especially if they have either a back story for the ability or the power of speech is across the Animal Kingdom.  For example, unlike other Pokemon, Team Rocket’s Meowth can speak more than his name.  At some point, this is explained as him learning how to speak at the cost of being able to learn any more attacks.  At least this is what I heard when I paid attention.  So there’s a sacrifice for such a power in this case.

One thing that does annoy me is when every talking animal is friendly, except for the alpha predator.  The squirrels and rabbits are kind, but the grizzly is a serial killer?  The variety of human behavior seems to end at the universal beliefs about certain animals.  Prey animals are kind and predators are sociopaths.  I’ve spent time watching the squirrels around my house over the years.  There are some pretty mean squirrels out there, so to think all of them are nice is a mistake.  While we’re here, can someone explain why every animated duck from the old days seems to have some mental issue?  Daffy Duck is a conniving, greedy coward and Donald Duck is a rage-a-holic.  I’m not even going to get into the extended web-footed family here.

So, what do people think of talking animals or animals with human behavior?  Have any favorites or examples of it done horribly wrong?

Book Tag Day!

I’ve been tagged!  This is an author-based tag that is kind of fun and John W. Howell tagged me.  Check out his excellent thriller:

My Grl by John W. Howell

My Grl by John W. Howell

John J. Cannon successful San Francisco lawyer takes a leave of absence from the firm and buys a boat he names My GRL. He is unaware that his newly-purchased boat had already been targeted by a terrorist group. John’s first inkling of a problem is when he wakes up in the hospital where he learns he was found unconscious next to the dead body of the attractive young woman who sold him the boat in the first place. John now stands between the terrorists and the success of their mission.

YOU CAN BUY IT HERE!

The rules of this tag are to answer the following four writing questions, and then tag three other authors. Next week, March 10, these three authors will (hopefully) answer the same questions and tag three others, and so the chain continues to grow larger. This will enable readers to get to know more authors and their books. It will also allow everyone to get to know these authors a little better.

Questions:

1. What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on the 7th book of my fantasy series while waiting for the last parts of the 4th book to come in.  Though, there’s always a chance I’ll have the edits and cover art by the time this post goes live next Monday.  Anyway, you can typically find me toiling away at the Legends of Windemere series.  My goal is to keep my writing a few books ahead of my publishing to avoid any long delays.

2. How does your work differ from others in the same genre?

The biggest difference between me and other fantasy authors is that I use present tense third person.  It’s where I feel most comfortable and my story takes on the vivid life that I want it to have.  The downside is that it can be jarring to people because it’s an uncommon and difficult style to use.

Another difference is that while many fantasy books (at least those I’ve been reading) are going low magic in their worlds, I’m going in the opposite direction.  Windemere has magic everywhere and is used in a more casual sense.  There are still combat spells that scare people, but magic isn’t a rarity or forbidden like on other fantasy worlds.

3. Why do you write what you do?

I write what I write because I love what I write.  If I enjoy the story I’m telling then there’s a better chance of the reader enjoying it too.  As for the genre, it’s because I love the freedom of creation that fantasy gives me.  Not so much that there are less rules than genres based in our world, but there’s more flexibility.

4. How does your writing process work?

I do character biographies and a brief synopsis of the book’s plot while taking a break from the current series.  As time goes on, I grab subplots from the character bios and flush those out with notes.  Then, I do an extreme chapter section by chapter section outline of each book in the series to plot my route.  It’s really a single line of what I want to achieve in each section.  When I sit down to write the book, I look at the outline and make changes.  I omit things that are pointless or merge sections that can be merged.  The outline always gets altered as I go along because some things work better in the planning stage than when I put it into practice.

And now time to Tag three other Authors.

Busy day coming up, but I had to mention a few things before one of the big posts:

  1. Thank you to all who donated to the February giveaway.  I’m waiting on the list of winners, which might be delayed due to . . . something of a personal nature that I’m not authorized to get into.
  2. I’m still looking for volunteers for the Cover Reveal and Blog Tour of Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune.  These two events will be happening once I get the cover art and I’m gathering help now.  My goal is to get at least 2 people posting each day of April.  If you want to help then go to the sign-up form by clicking on the picture below:

Call for beta readers

Any volunteers for beta readers?

Elaine Jeremiah's avatarElaine Jeremiah

Hi everyone.

I’ve finished the first round of editing of my novel Reunion of the Heart and I’m currently reading through it again, correcting and amending as I go.

I would like to send it out to beta readers soon, so if you would be interested in reading it and letting me know what you think, please get in touch.

I only need a few people to beta read, so really it’s on a first come, first served basis.  This novel is very much a romance, so won’t be to everyone’s taste.  But if you think you might like to be a beta reader for me, please let me know.

My email address is: elaine (dot) jeremiah (at) gmail (dot) com

Thank you! 🙂

Call for Volunteers! (I Have a Form this Time!)

CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR 2 EVENTS!

We’re getting close to the debut of Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune.  All I need is the cover art and then it’ll be 2-3 days of hype.  Still, it’s not too early to get volunteers for these events.

  • Cover Reveal–  This is a simple revelation of the cover, book blurb, and my author information.  I’ll be sending an HTML file of this to all volunteers about 1-2 days before it has to go up.  Since I don’t have the cover or a clear completion time, I can’t give an exact date.  I apologize for this, but I’d like to get volunteers without doing a last minute scramble to get my book out.  Timing is everything.
  • April Blog Tour–  Like last time, I will give a day to each volunteer to make their post and I’ll do a thank you post in return.  Any authors who join will have it mentioned in that post along with any social media sites and their Amazon sales site.  The document at the bottom will make gathering this information a lot easier.  Again, this will come in the form of an HTML file that you simply copy and paste into your post screen.

Thank you to anyone who volunteers and please spread the word.  Also, please use the document, which will make things easier to keep track of.  Thanks again.

Book Spotlight: “The Oath” by Dennis Koller

Goals and Updates: What the Hell, Universe?

Good news is that Legends of Windemere: Family of the Tri-Rune is edited and ready to go once the cover art arrives.  I’m going to be making a post later with a link to a Google Document to sign up for the Cover Reveal and the April Blog Tour.  The hype for this book won’t be a week as before, but 2-3 days.  Cover Reveal, a day of posting the first section throughout the day, and then a Twubs chat where you can ask me any questions you want over Twitter.  Simple, short, and it will get right to the publishing part quickly.

Now that we got the good news out of the way, I can say that my week was magically disastrous.  Seriously, it’s like there’s a contest between the months to see who can be the biggest bastard.  Beginning of a Hero had a free period last weekend and hasn’t bounced back at all.  The free period wasn’t even that successful compared to other numbers I hear from people.  Even worse, a review vanished overnight, but I think it’s a 2-star, which confuses me.  I didn’t know Amazon deleted those.  Either way, I can’t figure out how to boost the book again.

Snowstorm starts tonight and goes into tomorrow night.  Slept terribly.  A medical issue that I can’t go into here.  All I can say is that I’m not the one with the sudden issue and it’s going to throw things out of whack for a bit.  Battle of the stuffed fish kind of happened to.  The toddler came home with a new toy that we thought he took from a kid on the bus.  He was showing off to the kids on the bus, but it came from a teacher who already gave him a stuffed penguin.  So it was a lesson in borrowing and returning that seemed to go smoother at school than home.  He still isn’t happy that he had to give ‘Marlin’ (dad from Finding Nemo) back.

Goals for the Week:

  1. Shovel snow and curse Disney for keeping their promotion for Frozen going for so long.
  2. Write more of Legends of Windemere: Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue.  I got 3 chapters done, so I hope to keep that pace going.  Probably only get 1 or 2 chapters done with what’s going on. Still paying for that January break.
  3. Build up the level of biking.  Storm and snow days might kill that off again.  You’d think an indoor activity wouldn’t suffer from weather, but it really causes trouble.
  4. If Cover Art comes in, kick off the hype.  I’d love to make a release next weekend, but it might not be possible.  A late month release might happen, which will drive me nuts because I’m excited about this book.
  5. Outline another of the Elysium books if time permits.
  6. Eat, drink, drink, drink, drink, shower, and possibly sleep.
