W.I.P.- Legends of Windemere

So I have this little series that I’ve been working on and it’s recently gone passed the halfway mark.  At least for what I’ve written.  I’ve only published 6 of the 15 books (I hope as I write this in late November) and I’m starting in on writing Book 9.  So I feel like I passed a milestone while also feeling like I have a long way to go.

A big reason is because while I feel every book is necessary to give every character the proper amount of development and attention, I’m sure most of the audience won’t agree with me.  Meh.  I’m doomed no matter what because things will make no sense if I cut out certain books and then I’ll just have people yelling at me being inconsistent.  So that’s not even a topic I care to discuss at length.  I’m really just saying it because every time I mention that it’s a long series, I inevitably get a comment or private message from someone explaining why they hate long series.  This is just to nip it in the bud with my usual explanation.

Anyway, I am at a strange point now because all of the major players have been introduced by the point that I’m writing.  Every book will focus on big events for the established heroes and villains until the climactic battle with Baron Arthuru Kernaghan occurs . . . I still have no idea what to title that book or who to give the final blow to.  I had one idea that played off a rather difficult subplot, but now I’m thinking that it will have to come down to one character who quiet simply has earned the right.  That’s if I don’t go with the Baron winning in the end.  That’s a level of vague that’s going to cost me.

I still have many areas to explore like the desert (Book 7), Yagervan Plains (Book 9), the snowy mountains (Book 10), the southern jungles (Book 11), and whatever else seems to come about.  Looking at that list now, I realized I never gave the southern jungles a name, but I might leave it like that.  It’s total wilderness there, so who would have the authority to name it?  Then again, Delvin Cunningham seems to have a habit of naming landmarks that either have no designation or he thinks are ridiculous.  Not sure where that quirk came from.  Still I guess I’m writing for the exploration of world and character as well as setting things up.

For what?  Well, the other stories.  Legends of Windemere has always been the starting point of the world.  If the heroes are successful then they kick off the Age of Heroes.  If they fail, it’s an Age of Darkness under the Baron.  Most of the other stories can actually operate under both results and it would have no influence over any of the pre-Champion tales like Clyde, Blundering 7, and Tears of Gola.  So this is a jumping off point for me and I think that’s another reason it’s taking more than a handful of books.  I’m establishing the world here, so later series and stories won’t have to worry as much.  I’m talking more about the various systems like how magic works or some of the species set ups.  After Legends of Windemere, things will be locked in.  At least for Ralian, Shayd, Ambervale, and the Chaos Void.  Canst’s Fields and Cerascent will need a little work since they won’t be touched here.

It feels weird being so far along in the writing.  I spent over a decade with only the first 1-3 books done and repeatedly edited.  Now I’ve written 5.5 in the span of 2 years thanks to hard work, support, and having detailed outlines/notes.  At least rate, I might finish writing the whole series in 2016 even if I only have half of them published.  That does bring up one question though:

What do I do at the end?  Do I simply write ‘The End’ even though other series will be coming later?  Do I write something that alludes to more coming?  What about an acknowledgement page and who do I mention in there?  I think I know, but I have that fear of missing someone.  I see a lot that goes family, friends, editor (named), cover artist (named), and then the readers.  I’d probably add the names of the other players in the game this is based off of too.  It’s a lot to think about and I’m not even at the final book.

Beginning of the End: Topics Help for a Time

Quina from FFIX

Quina from FFIX

A long time ago, I realized that working with weekly topics and scheduling things took the edge off blogging.  I didn’t have to scramble every weekend for things to write about and people were happy to give topics.  That lasted for a while and it helped since my blog ran into a few survival issues.

The biggest issue is that it was originally designed as a platform for my books, but I failed to see the flaw.  Being a series author, I inevitably ran into a point where I couldn’t talk about my books.  Too much would be revealed and the spoiler complaints began appearing when I started mentioning new heroes and villains.  I still have a few secrets left, which I’m hold onto for as long as I can.  Yet, it makes it very difficult to make this blog only about Legends of Windemere.  That’s where the topics came in along with several fun things to do with them like the Old Shoppe skits and characters talking amongst themselves.

Still, there was the other inevitability that I ran into.  I’ve hit a point where I don’t know what to write about.  I asked for suggestions and people either had nothing or things that I could cover in one post.  That’s another reason I’m cutting down here.  People seem more inclined to give specific questions than lengthy topics, which is what Wednesday will be covering.  (With that in mind, feel free to request a topic or ask a question any time.)  I used to have an ‘Ask the Author’ page here, but it had 2 things in a year which made it dead weight.

So I did learn that having a weekly topic can help for a while, but it shouldn’t be depended on.  Also that people don’t read archives and you shouldn’t expect them too, so new followers may request something that has been requested several times before.  Nature of the blogging beast.  Anyway, I used this tool and drove it into the ground, which is why I’m in the position I’m in now.  I don’t know how many of the old skits will continue like Old Shoppe and character chats that depended on a weekly topic.  Part of me wishes I could do the ‘Ask a Character’ stuff again, but I’ve been burned by that too often.

This really does prove that a blog evolves from its original form.  It might not always be a drastic change like here, but you have to adapt as your audience and the blogosphere changes.  This can happen in many forms and a big one here is going to be the return to smaller topics.  I might end up falling back on poetry in times of having no idea what I’m doing.

So, what do you do with your when you’re out of ideas?  Are you big into weekly topics, staying with your initial topic, etc.?

Beginning of the End: Challenge of the WIP

Yahoo Image Search

I’ll admit that I’ve become jealous of people who can post their WIP without fear.  I try, but I realize that I always hold something back.  Part of it was because I had been lectured about spoilers very often and other times it was because I simply didn’t want to spill a story twist.  This made feedback problematic and I think it also turned these posts into some of the weakest ones in my repertoire.  Though the worst ended up being the ‘Character Interviews’ that simply died even when they were requested.

Anyway, there was the added problem with the WIP success in that many people ended up getting confused by them.  I think readers forgot a few key points that I got tired of mentioning every time:

  • All of my stories take place in Windemere even if they don’t connect directly with Legends of Windemere.
  • I have over 30 story ideas in various states of notes and most of them do not include Luke Callindor, Fizzle, and Nyx.
  • I won’t be writing these for years, so I never know what to say to ‘I cannot wait to read this idea’.  I appreciate the thought, but it does make me feel bad that you’ll be waiting for a while.

Another interesting thing that turned up with several of these posts is that feedback would commonly take two forms.  One is telling me stories that sound similar, which always felt like a passive-aggressive way of saying the idea is cliche.  This tended to ignore me stating that the meat of the story was left out and it was only the skeleton.  The other form was that some authors would respond by connecting it to their own works.  I’m sure I did this a few times in the past, but I’ve tried to stop when I saw how often people were doing it to me.  I don’t really mind these conversations, but it does get awkward when I end up helping someone with their idea while mine from the post is kicked to the side.  I think this goes back to my interest in reciprocation and how there seemed to only be a tight circle of people who were into that.  I’ll help someone flesh out an idea, but I would like for the favor to be returned when I’m trying to ask for help.

In the end, I don’t know how often I’m going to be doing these posts from now on.  I can’t go into details with them no matter how much I want to in regards to things like Project Phoenix and Sin.  Those are too big at times.  Also I just don’t know if I really get anything out of doing a WIP on a public forum.  The vagueness and author instinct to hide information limits what can be done.  In fact, I think these posts tend to make me more defensive than usual because it’s like putting my babies on the stage before they’re ready.  There’s a level of exposure that doesn’t mix well with the vagueness that I feel I’m forced to do.

I wonder how many people stopped at the third paragraph.  Anyway, all this being said, I’m going to be doing a special WIP on Saturday.  Not sure exactly how this one will play out since it’s unique from the ones in the past.

Of 2015 and Genre

Hour of research and all this is all I needed

Hour of research and all this is all I needed

First, I hope everyone is enjoying 2015.  Small stomach bug here and the boy’s asthma is acting up, so I think 2014 is getting a finally shot in.

Some people may have seen the great 4-star review of Pamela Beckford.  It’s the one before this post and it got me thinking about my genre because part of her critique has been a fairly common sentiment.  Thankfully, she said it a lot nicer than other people have and that’s why I started thinking about it.  Early on, I claimed that my books were YA since I didn’t know what else to call them.  I was never entirely comfortable with this even though they’re similar to what I read as a child.  There was no YA category at this point, so fantasy had the sex, violence, and nudity.  Not that anyone has a problem with #2 for some reason, which will eternally baffle me.  Act of taking a life?  No problem.  The naked form or natural act of procreation?  BE GONE, YOU CORRUPTING DEMONS OF THE PAGE!

I don’t hide the fact that some of my characters are knocking boots.  I never show the act though.  I don’t think I’ve even had Luke grabbed Sari’s naked breast on purpose.  At least not until I wrote that sentence just now.  You get some heavy making out, playful innuendo, talking about the act, and the blissful aftermath.  This really doesn’t come into play until Allure of the Gypsies when Sari, the sexually open female character, makes her debut.  So it’s around that time that I hear how the book has too much sex in it, especially for teens or children.  Personally, I disagree since I’ve heard teens talk about sex with no shame whatsoever.  That’s just me though and I have to consider my genre accordingly.  I do end up warning people getting these for young teens that there’s a lot of violence, which never seems to phase them.  Yeah, yeah, dead horse.

Here’s what I found about the 2009 creation ‘NEW ADULT FICTION‘:

  • Protagonists range from 18-25/30.  CHECK!
  • Fantasy is a little iffy in here because this fairly new category seems to focus on real world stuff.  First job, life after high school, dating outside of high school, etc.  Still all of my heroes are trying to handle a path that takes them into adulthood.  A major part of the story is how they grow as characters, which is one of the reasons I don’t shy away from the relationship stuff.
  • More attention to sexuality and identity, which is what some people have had issues with in my books.  Though, I’ve also read that YA does this too, which is a reason many people don’t think the New Adult category is necessary.  I think a challenge here is that everyone has their own tolerance of the topic and thoughts on what a child should be exposed to.  I would say my books are better for the ’14 and up’ crowd, but others would say it’s for the ’18 and up’ crowd.  So it is hard to put an exact age bracket on books like this.  Is a teen able to read something with innuendo?  Does the topic work better if protection and the possibility of pregnancy get mentioned?  This is the area of debate for ‘Legends of Windemere’ and I’m thinking it’s all about personal preference, which is how it should be.
  • Doing an image search for ‘New Adult Fiction’ requires the Safe Search Off because nudity comes up.  Image search for anything violent and you don’t need the Safe Search Off.  Just something I noticed that confused me.
  • I stopped to do another check about ‘New Adult Fantasy Fiction’.  I got nothing, so it seems the two genres aren’t really hooking up.  It’s either YA Fantasy with it’s ‘immature tone’ or Adult Fantasy with its gritty brutality.

So in conclusion, I am:

New Adult Fantasy Fiction with a YA Tone and Style

Glad I could clear that confusion up . . . Now back to writing a scene where Delvin is caught naked and can’t get to his clothes.  There’s a sword joke in there and think his ‘attacker’ actually makes it.

Curse of the Dark Wind by Charles Yallowitz Review

Pamela Beckford's avatarYear 'Round Thanksgiving Project

Four and a half stars out of five

Book Six in the Legends of Windemere series is full of action, fantasy and adventure.

Luke, and the other champions, try to solve the mystery of the Living Curse. It takes them on a journey to Gale Hollow and then on to Widowhorn and the Garden of Uli. Luke appears to be the champion who is targeted in this book in the series. As he and his friends battle all sorts of creatures, are visited by an old friend, and discover new found magic and talent.

I really enjoyed Fizzle in this book. He was allowed to shine with his abilities and the champions seem to rely on him throughout much of this book.

These are fun books to read. I recommend reading them in order though so you will have full understanding.

I do wish, however, that the partnering of the…

Happy Birthday to The Story Reading Ape!

islandeditions's avatarBooks: Publishing, Reading, Writing

When I discovered it was Chris Graham’s (aka Chris The Story Reading Ape) Birthday today, a simple greeting from me on Facebook just wouldn’t suffice! I knew I had to make my wishes that much more special, because this isn’t any ordinary Ape, you know! Chris has been a terrific support to me and many other Authors and Bloggers in the Internet-o-shpere, so I wanted to be sure he knew exactly how much I appreciate all that he does.

So I recruited the help of Snowy, one of the gardeners who works for Dennis, to help me make this video for you, Chris (or Mr. Ape, as I like to call you) and am sending Big Birthday Greetings your way and all the best from Bequia for the New Year!

A Bunch of Birthday Bananas from #Bequia!

Also, in lieu of the usual singing of “Happy Birthday to You”…
