This is really a 4.5 rating. The story dragged a bit in the middle, but it was a lot of fun how everything tied into each other at the end. I was really surprised that there was a lot of drama and deep characters along with the comedy. One of my favorite parts of the book is the humorous footnotes that appear from time to time. It was a unique way to learn more about the characters’ world without the flow of the story breaking with dumps of information.

As far as the characters go, the author does a great job making many of them flawed and lovable. There were times I found Pig’s naivete irritating, but I had to respect her ability to never give up. Sir Kay made a great counterpoint to her positive energy, so they played off each other very well. By the end of the adventure, I did feel like I was saying good-bye to good friends.

Definitely recommend this book and I’ll be reading it again in the future.

Character Hot Seat: Timoran Wrath & Fizzle

One is a wise and powerful barbarian that has a moderate fear of magic.  The other is a purple-scaled, dragonfly-winged dragon with enough magic to punch a hole through a mountain.  Timoran Wrath and Fizzle make for an interesting pairing, but it’s one that appears quite often.  Mostly I think it’s because Fizzle likes perching on the big man’s shoulder and head.  From the author perspective, they make an incredible combination of magic, physical strength, speed, and wisdom.  As seen in Curse of the Dark Wind, they do make an impressive team.

These two characters also have a habit of being mistaken for their outward appearance.  Sari gets this too, but she does it on purpose.  Timoran is big, muscular, scarred and a barbarian.  So readers and other characters assume he’s stupid, which is pretty far from the truth.  Fizzle is small, cute, and has a child-like speech pattern. So readers and other characters think he’s immature and foolish, which isn’t true.  Neither character does this on purpose or openly fights against the ideas unless they’re prodded.  Guess it’s a good thing Timoran and Fizzle are mildly tempered.

Really nothing left to say here.  Ask away and see what they say.

Read an excerpt from the book below

“The room is comfortably warm due to the sunlight passing through the glass dome that acts as a ceiling. Tropical plants cover the edge of the room, which has soft grass growing out of the spongy floor. A gentle rain falls out of the ceiling and onto the foliage, giving the air a crisp freshness that invigorates the wildlife. Peacocks and peahens strut around the room, the males brandishing their colorful plumage when Kira arrives with her guests. An albino peacock stands by a low table and hops into the heiress’s lap when she sits on the lush grass. A gracious wave of her hand is all she does to get Sari and Luke to join her on the floor. With a cordial cough, she redirects her fiancée to sit at the head of the table, placing him between…

Character Hot Seat: Gabriel the Destiny God & Baron Arthuru Kernaghan

Baron Kernaghan is the time-locked main villain of the series and tied for 3rd with Luke Callindor and Fizzle.  He is the great darkness that was wiped from the memory and history of Windemere.  His return will revive his legacy, which can cause insanity in mere mortals.  Also, the gods have their Law of Influence this time, so they can’t step in to stop him.  This is where the champions come in.  Arthuru is also the father of Stephen the sadistic madman that is after Nyx.

On the other side of the conflict is Gabriel the God of Destiny.  He has created the champions and several of the Baron’s henchmen because the game has to be even, but he’s definitely choosing sides.  There’s a history between these two has been hinted at and a few clues dropped throughout the books.  Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue definitely has a lot about them and the early conflict that placed both of these once mortal men into their current roles.  So who better to put in a room together?  Especially since they rarely get any book time.

Character Hot Seat: Nyx & Delvin Cunningham

Nyx took the #2 spot, so I’m pairing her off with Delvin Cunningham.  These two always have great scenes together.  At least to me, there’s a special bond brewing here.  Delvin is the only one to really throw Nyx off her center, but not in a bad way.  He’s straight to the point that he likes her and he’s been that way since they met in Family of the Tri-Rune.  Nyx is her usual self with the magical reactions that tend to send the former mercenary flying.  It’s a breath of fresh air to write their scenes as the story gets a little darker and other characters are finding themselves stressed.

For those that aren’t familiar with these two, Nyx is an incredibly powerful sorceress who doesn’t have to use gestures or incantations.  Sleeper of the Wildwood Fugue has a few answers for that.  She’s been with Luke since Prodigy of Rainbow Tower and has been through a lot.  Delvin is fairly newer and is the standing Mercenary Prince.  He’s taking a break from that life, which is perfect since he’s been uncovered as one of the six champions.  He does fall into the warrior category, but lacks Timoran’s strength and Luke’s speed.  Instead, Delvin, prodigy of Selenia Hamilton, is all about the mind and he is a great planner.  Though putting a plan together with his current friends is teaching him to adapt quicker.

So, ask away and have some fun.  As usual, remember to be respectful and try not to push for spoilers.  The characters are under orders not to spill secrets, but let’s not make them uncomfortable.
