Book #Review: Plundering the #Romance Novel by Ionia Martin . . . Wait . . . What!?

I . . . Yeah . . . Not really sure how to do this.  Seriously, how do you review a book like this?  Every page had me stopping to mutter ‘Wait. What!?’ because the author would do something that was so odd.  Not a bad type of odd, but a ‘you gotta take a second look and succumb to a delayed laugh’ type of odd.  This really went for spoof and never let go, which makes the story (am I allowed to call it that?) highly entertaining.

You can’t go into this thinking it will be serious because you’ll just hurt yourself.  At this point, I’m probably only trying to make a decent word count here.  Just read the book and see for yourself.  It’s an experience.

I need your brains (that sounded so zombie)

Give a horror cliche and see what happens.

Want to become part of my next parody?

I had so much fun writing Plundering the Romance Novel. Really, it was great. I made a list of the things that authors do in romances that drive me completely mad, and built the story around those.

Now it is horror’s turn in the hotseat. You can think horror movie or horror novel or a combination of both.

Here’s the deal. I’ve got a list of horror clichés going already, but I want to involve you. Give me your worst horror clichés, and if I use one of them in the book, I will name a character after the person who submitted it. Who doesn’t want to be immortalised in a terrible horror parody? First names only, I promise.

Bring it on, folks.

The book is called “Saturday the 14th.”

Apparently, Friday the 13th is bad luck.

Ye Olde Bookstore: Mind the Dust

Prague National Library (According to a site)

Prague National Library (According to a site)

Try the place next door if you’re looking for coffee.  Oh, you wanted a book.  Kind of young, so I wonder if you know what a book is.  No, it isn’t the stuff they put into your brain these days.  Not exactly.  Both hold stories, but the classic methods are what you hold in your hands.  Sure, you can’t carry as many as the eReaders or the mind plugs.  Issue with paper cuts too . . . It’s when you get a cut from the edge of paper, which is what books are made out of.  Just watch your hands, kid.  So, are you still interested?

Sure, I’ll go with retro and carrying a book around being a cool thing. Hope you read the thing you buy. Yes, you have to do it with your eyes open because you can’t see it in your dreams until after you read it the first time.  We have all the classics from all the genres, so pick something that interests you.  Even if you only have a vague idea, I can steer you in the right direction. Here’s a mask and an emergency oxygen tank since there’s a lot of dust around here.  I’m good because I haven’t stepped outside in cen . . . a long time.  Don’t look a day over fifty, huh?

You’re looking for a story with a flying lizard that breathes fire and attacks people who live in squalor.  Forgot they banned certain genres a few years back and they only got revived this year. Your parents were part of the rebellion? Surprised you don’t know what a dragon is, but most of your generation are into the old world thrillers.  Back when they used bullets instead of sonic darts.  Though what you’re going for involves swords and other medieval weaponry.  You know what a knife is? Take that bread slicer and make it bigger, sharper, a capital ‘T’ for the hilt, and a fancy holder on your belt.  That’s a sword.  Let me see what I can find you.

I’ve got one about school kids fighting evil, another about two best friends fighting evil, an outcast fighting evil, an idiot and his friends fighting evil, one about a young man learning to fight evil, a bunch of kids going to another world to fight evil . . . Heroes in this genre tend to fight evil a lot.  So, pick your literary pleasure.  Yes, we do take virtual money.  I may peddle in the old stuff, but I know what’s worthless and what’s not.  If you even think of pointing at a book to say it’s worthless then you’ll be banned.  Okay, that one you can get away with.  Nobody knows what that author was thinking or why it was published.  In fact, that’s what caused the downfall.  But that’s another story.

British English Translated

For all my British friends . . . now I’ll know what you really mean. 😉

As you may remember, I spent many of my formative years in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. One of the first things I realized upon arriving to that fair city was that speaking English for years in Greece had not prepared me for the thrill of actually communicating with the natives. Specifically, I was caught unawares of the wonderful nuances that make all the difference.

“How are you today?” I’d ask my fellow students.

“Aye, not too bad, actually” they’d reply.

“Why, what’s wrong?” I’d ask, clueless to the fact that this is a Scotsman’s understated way of saying, “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.”

So, when I found a hilarious post on The Idealist Revolution website on the subject, I just had to share as a helpful guide to my American friends, anyone setting their scenes in the UK and anyone wanting to visit…

The Merchant of Nevra Coil Needs Volunteers!

Bill Murray from Stripes (BTW- There is no meeting.)

Bill Murray from Stripes (BTW- There is no meeting.)

First, be careful searching for ‘volunteer’ pictures when you have Safe Search off.  Half the stuff was ‘Hunger Games’ and the rest were . . . I’m just glad my son wasn’t in the room because I’m not ready for that talk.

So I’m aiming to release The Merchant of Nevra Coil in August and I’m looking for people to help spread the word.  Final edits are still going on and I don’t have the cover yet, but we all know I get volunteers early.  Also that something always goes wrong, which is why I never state an actual day when I do this.  We’ve all heard this song and dance before, but that brief explanation is for new people.

This time around I’m adding a free period for Beginning of a Hero to the new release’s opening weekend.  So my main focus will be the ‘BOOK IS LIVE!’ post instead of the cover reveal.  The latter might be me and anyone willing to reblog since the two might be very close to each other.  I will say if I get the cover or a great teaser within the next week then I might do a spontaneous reveal.  Hopefully it’s safe to assume all volunteers will be willing to help with that or at least not get annoyed if I email the info.

This is rather long-winded, but I’m not in a position to say the thing will go down on such and such a day.  So feel free to spread the word, volunteer in the comments, and I hope everyone is looking forward to the next book.  Especially since this it highlights this fun character:

VOTING NOW OPEN – Annual Bloggers Bash Awards

Sacha Black's avatarSacha Black

Who-will-you-vote-for-

You nominated in your hundreds – literally! I had to enlist a committee of fabulous bloggers (Ali, Geoff and Hugh) to help organise all the nominations and sort them into this, the official voting post. To find out more about the #BloggersBash event have a look at this, this or this.

11733474_10207031963138573_162371955_nBefore we begin voting, there’s one more thing to add. The lovely Geoff decided we needed to stand out from the crowd so that y’all can find us at the British Library on the 1st August. So he has ordered some Annual Bloggers Bash t-shirts. The committee will be wearing them, but it was cheaper to bulk buy, so inevitably we have spares. SO, if you win one of the awards then a t shirt is yours! But if you would like a t-shirt anyway then they will be £6 on the day. Geoff is…

FENCE JUMPING (Guest Post)…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

Jumping-fence-31

What importance does loyalty play when making decisions? What I mean is when you look over the fence at the other side, the grass may seem greener, but think about this. When you jump the barbed wire fence, cut your legs, land on your butt, and then look down at the grass it certainly doesn’t look greener, does it? In fact, it is now stained with your blood. Okay, so that’s a little graphic. The point is that making decisions, and I’ve learned this the hard way too many times, is a spiritual thing. You have to really tune into that spiritual side of yourself to ensure that when you leap, there won’t be bloodshed.

I’m not religious, but I am very spiritual. I believe that life changing, big decisions need to be meditated upon and prayed about. The answers will come. So, before you jump the fence to land…

Using Psionics in Fiction: Nosebleeds, Headaches, & Melty Brains

River Tam from Firefly

River Tam from Firefly

With the introduction of Dariana, I added a new type of power source to the human templates.  Basically, I opened the door for psionics to enter Windemere stories.  For those that don’t know what that means, think of Professor X, Jean Grey, and anyone else with mental powers. These don’t work like caster or priest magic, so defenses against those two types will do nothing here.  It still functions off the aura system in some ways, but that depends on the exact powers.  A telepath might not access as much energy as a body enhancer, but both would come in second to a psychokinetic or reality alterer.  There’s a lot that can be done here.  So here’s some tips:

  1. Giving your psionic everything is a mistake.  Even worse if you give them mastery and full power.  For one thing, it makes them unstoppable and unable to be tricked.  A reader will see anything going wrong for this person as odd because of their power.  How do you trick a telepath with no limits?  Can you really beat up a telekinetic that can lift a mountain?  This is an easy power category to lose control in.
  2. Never forget the range and limits.  Line of sight can be useful for the characters, but so can a simple ‘they know each other’.  One trick with psionics are mental tags that they can use to track people.  Yet you should try to put a range on these.  Could be anywhere from the same building to several mile radius.
  3. Side-effects!  Remember that this is a mental thing, which puts strain on the brain and body.  Nose and ear bleeds are the most common to show when things go wrong or are too tough.  Headaches work too.  Basically, things happening above the neck.  Though one that I want to use for a later character is that the more they use their powers, the weaker their grip on reality.
  4. Exhaustion is another thing to factor in.  I put this separately from side-effects because this is something that can (maybe should) happen over time.  The previous section was more about immediate strain.  Exhaustion builds up and can be undone by sleeping or meditation.  The rate of fatigue depends on the powers and uses.  For example, a simple surface scan for a telepath can have an imperceptible amount while rearranging somebody’s memory makes the character need a nap.
  5. Much like with casters and spells, psionics have a risk of backlash.  This is probably more dangerous than a backfiring fireball.  You can dodge or resist a spell even if it’s bouncing back.  When your own mind ‘rubber bands’ on itself, you might not realize it’s about to happen until the world is upside down and you’re tasting the number 9.
  6. One thing that’s common with psionics is that they aren’t common.  In fantasy settings, they get mistaken for casters.  Many are because they use spells to copy the effects.  A true, non-spell psionic should be an oddity that nobody knows much about.  The basics are okay for a learned character to know, but not the details unless they previously admitted to studying them.  In other words, give some mystery to the character in both power and origin.
