Burn Out? Depressed? Both?

I’ve been quiet all weekend.  Part of it is because I’ve been rushing around since Friday.  Train show and zoo on that day.  Family over for Thanksgiving on Saturday.  Today was nature preserve and cursing at the TV for 2 hours.  I haven’t been sleeping well either and tuning in for 100 emails at a time hasn’t been pretty.  So I went quiet . . . but not really for any of what I just said.

Seems I’m always saying I’m tired, depressed, or something negative here.  Yet I never do much to pull out of the emotional hole.  In fact, I tend to make it worse with some help from those around me.  (I swear to fucking GOD, I will block phone numbers if I get real world responses to this!)  I’m stressed and pessimistic.  Some people might have even picked up on me phoning in my comments for most of the last 2 months.  Crossing Bedlam pushed it away for a bit, but then it came back.  Rather terrified that Legends of Windemere: The Spirit Well suffered from this, but there’s supposed to be some depressing and angry scenes in there.  Now I’m just rambling.

It could be because I have no goals or guidance without a project.  It could be that I have no privacy, which is proven by my son charging in to throw toys at me.  *5 minute delay for kid wrangling*  It could be because I’ve no idea when I’ll release the next Windemere book and my hope to do it before Christmas is looking unlikely.  Too many missing pieces. Maybe it’s one of several other things like the weather, bad sleeping habits, financial situation, or whatever else is on the list.  Probably everything combined is making me feel like my life is not even remotely under my control and the universe is out to remind me that I shouldn’t try to be anything special.  Too dark?  Well that’s what it definitely feels like this year.  Nearly every aspect of my life seems to have taken a hit in some form and I can’t pinpoint a point of origin or a plan of escape.

This isn’t really a goal post.  I have no goals this week.  Don’t even have the urge to pick a video for this thing.  No idea what to do for Teaser Tuesday or Questions 3.  Have nothing to schedule for January.  All of the posts for December are revisits.  My break might be more of a deflation.  There might be days where I’m quiet on here.  You’ll see me on Twitter, but it’ll mostly be retweeting and tossing out a promo every 5-6 hours.  Will this damage whatever I’ve built as an indie author?  No idea, but I’m not sure I should keep limping along and phoning stuff in.  The angst, anger, and sadness are a little too easy to spot at times.

Later or something.

Growing a Character? Add water, sunlight, & the nearest sugary confection

Link from Legend of Zelda

Link from Legend of Zelda

I have to be honest about this post.  I’m not sure what I originally meant by ‘Growing a Character’ when I saw it on the list of topics.  Somebody probably suggested it and I thought the note would be enough.  Oops.  Yet I like a challenge and I have a vague idea of what I’m going to talk about.

Earlier this month, I wrote about married heroes and mentioned Spider-Man going from high school dweeb to adult hero with a wife.  Well, I couldn’t find a picture for that, so I went for Link . . . what?  Anyway, these two characters can be seen as examples of growth.

  • Spider-Man goes through phases of life that all of us can face.  Growing up, dating, graduating from high school, getting a job, paying bills, marriage, deal with Satan to undo that marriage, body taken over by Doctor Octopus, wondering why your ancient Aunt May has returned from the dead more times than Jean Grey . . . where was I going with this?  Ah, yes.  Ridiculousness of comic stories aside, the character grows up and readers follow along as they grow up.  If one is already adult then they can see something in the hero’s past to connect to.
  • Link is reborn in nearly every one of his video games.  It’s a hero cycle where evil is coming, a hero appears, evil strikes, the hero gains the ability to stop evil, and then stops evil.  This isn’t a story about ongoing character growth, but you can see the hero evolution go from beginning to end in one story.  There’s no back issues or older games to search for to get the whole picture.  Unlike Spider-Man, Link is simple and compact every time he appears.

Now these are from comics and video games, which are totally different from books.  A series allows for a long investment into character evolution.  Take Luke Callindor in Legends of Windemere and welcome to any new readers who didn’t see this one coming.  He is very immature and untested at the beginning. More so than the other champions and characters since they’ve veterans in some way.  Luke is very green and you get to see him go from dreaming of being a hero to starting his adventure and then into actually filling the role.  There’s a ‘coming of age’ aspect to his story, which is why he has a lot more personal life bumps and tragedies than the others.  One could even say his friends have paid their dues early on like Sari being introduced with the murder of her clan and Nyx losing her family before the series begins.  Delvin and Timoran are veteran warriors too, so they’ve lost friends.  For all of his courage and skills, Legends of Windemere is where Luke Callindor earns his hero scars and losses.  This is growth for him and the reader gets to see it from beginning to end.

I guess going with any character from beginning to end is how I define growth.  There’s evolution in their abilities and mindset.  You shouldn’t see the same character that was there at the beginning.  At least not entirely since there has to be something remaining from the original even if it’s a spark.  Again, this is easier in a lengthy series, but you can do it in a standalone too.  An adventure is an adventure, so it’s all about your focus and timeline.

What do you think about character growth and what do you do to achieve it?

Questions 3: Thanksgiving Edition

Yahoo Image Search

Yahoo Image Search

It’s Thanksgiving, but I know not everyone who follows me celebrates it.  So I’m splitting this into two sections:

For those who celebrate Thanksgiving:

  1. What do you think of the holiday?

For those who don’t celebrate Thanksgiving:

  1. Do you think it’s strange how the Internet allows us to see all of these holidays celebrated around the world?
  2. Does this bring us closer together as a species?
  3. What is your favorite holiday from another country or culture?

What Are You Thankful For? Windemere Edition!

Well, I was asked to make a post where my various characters say what they’re thankful for.  Let’s get right into it!  Also feel free to ask for anyone I forgot in the comments.

Luke Callindor-  Patient friends and healing potions.

Nyx- A big family and my magic.

Fizzle-  Apples and healthy teeth.

Sari- Having a new clan of friends.  Bet people thought I’d say something like money, so neener neener.

Timoran Wrath-  To have met such loyal and kind friends during my travels.  Is this supposed to be more materialistic?

Delvin Cunningham- I don’t know. Feels like everyone would say family.  I’ll be a jerk and go with . . . I’m really the wrong one to do this.

Sari again-  I’m thankful for easy marks and pretty dresses.  There we go.

Dariana- Being awake and having friends.

Kira Grasdon- Luke and all of my friends after what happened in Bor’daruk.  (CHECK OUT LEGENDS OF WINDEMERE: SLEEPER OF THE WILDWOOD FUGUE!)  Why do I get the promo?

Trinity-  That my people are alive to see another day.

Yola Biggs-  I’m thankful for having knees because they help me bend my legs and walk.

The Lich-  The blessing and trust of my master.

Baron Kernaghan-  Such an odd tradition.  Perhaps I’m thankful for the hard work of my agents?

Stephen Kernaghan-  For *removed due to graphic nature*

Merchant of Nevra Coil–  For business being good and my new experiments showing promise.

Ichabod Brooks–  My family.  That’s all I need to be happy.

Cassidy- Wait. I’m not from this world.  Is this right?

Lloyd Tenay- Just go with it and say hi.  I’m thankful for knives, graphic t-shirts, being out of prison, my winning smile, and to all those bad guys that failed to kill me.  I couldn’t have won without your ineptness and being made of squishy flesh.  Now where’s a turkey to carve?  I mean a real turkey and not an odd hint at killing somebody . . . Seriously, people, I’m hungry.

Happy Thanksgiving from Windemere & Bedlam!

NOW AVAILABLE! A Little Elfy in Big Trouble by Barb Caffrey

ALittleElfyinBigTrouble_med

Blurb:

Young Bruno the Elfy and Sarah, his mostly-human teenage girlfriend, are in deep trouble. Bruno’s Elfy mentor Roberto the Wise is about to be sacrificed by a Dark Elf, and Sarah’s parents have decided to help the Elf rather than the Elfy. Things look bleak and are getting worse by the minute, but Bruno and Sarah have a number of allies — human, Elfy, and ghosts — that the Dark Elf can’t possibly expect. Can young love, desperation, and great unexpected power win out despite it all?

Short Excerpt:

Bruno took Sarah’s hand and led her back outside. He looked with his mage senses, and felt nothing; no Elfy magic, no Human magic, and as far as he could tell, no Elf magic, Dark or Bright.

He put up a light shield that should help conceal their voices, and decided it was safe enough to talk for a bit.

“Tomorrow is Ba’altinne, Sarah.” Bruno rubbed his fingers through his hair and tried not to look too hard at Sarah. Goddess, she was beautiful. But he had to stay on topic. “That’s your May Day. Tomorrow.” He shook his head and tried not to frown. “How can we get everything together in time to stop Dennis the Dark Elf?”

“I have faith in you,” she said. Her eyes darkened. Bruno felt as if he were falling, before she gently brushed her lips against his.
